If ever anyone has any suggestions, let me know. This forum is new, so this forum can easilly change in the weeks ahead.

If you have an idea, I'd be happy to hear it. Perhaps I will try it out.

I would not make just a new thread to expose this little suggestion, so here it is

Fred do you think if it would not be better to expect the smiley from the Images limitation by posts ?

Oops, I did not see your post vincento. What do you mean exactly? Smilies count as images and I believe you are only allowed 6 per post. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a way to seperate smilies from uploaded or attached images.

Thanks for sending an update email to everyone today!
Although I haven't been too active lately I really like to hear about what's going on.

One suggestion:
Email everyone when you need votes for the mini challenges. I would have voted on the last one but I wasn't aware of the deadline and voting procedure to cast a vote.

Good idea about getting people to vote. Will be done, thanks:thumb:

Won't make a new thread for it, just a quickie :) Now that the artist interviews are announced there on the forum side.. Maybe include the 'target artists' name there as well? Right now it looks like there's two new interviews of you ;)

edit: Love those interviews, They're always fun to read :)

Hmmm, that can't be fixed. The way it's set up is that the highlights show the name of the thread starter. I can not chooose which name is shown. However, I can put the name in the image. Thanks:)

Congrats on your next post, whichever it is. The 1k post, make it count ;)

I have small suggestion about navigation in contest entries: add "Next" and "Previous" links/buttons to the entry page. This kind of functionality used in Domonance War I pages and looks quite usefull for me.

Since I'm seeing this more and more in game credits... would it be an option to add "Shader Artist" to the personal stats page (the one where you select all your specializations)?

Not that I'm such an awesome shader artist or something, but I have been messing with Shader FX and Mental Mill (FX Composer 2) a bit lately. And it can be quite an "artform" to get really nice shaders (the one from Team Fortress 2 for example). :)

Members who received this zaward: 2

In the text for each award, the "Z" should probably be removed :P

and this too "There are no zawards in this category."

Special events (Dominance War)
1st = 5
2nd = 4
3rd = 3
4th = 2
5th = 1
War Veteran

GA.org Main Competitions
1st = 3
2nd = 2
3rd = 1
Certified Finalist

GA.org Mini Challenges
1st = 1
2nd = 0.5
3rd = 0
Certified Finalist

3rd place in the GA.org Mini Challenges should get .25 points, not 0. Otherwise its inconsistent in two ways. 1) 3rd in this category is the only "placed" contestant to get 0 points in any of the 3 categories (if you have a full icon, it should always be worth something). 2) 5,4,3,2,1,vet and 3,2,1,vet are incrementally consistent. 1,.5,0,vet does not follow the pattern.

Cheers,
CEH

"The voting process
Depending on if a game company is voting or if elite guest game artists are voting, voting methods change from competition to competition. Sometimes individuals choose favorites and write comments and other times one person gathers up everyone's choices and comments and submits them as one single submission.

Judge selections:
There are various aspects of your creation that will influence a judge's choice.
- Technical merit
- Theme Idea and carry through
- Textures
- Pose and atmosphere
- Personality
- Model and - Model and silhouette

Each aspect of your creation is important when creating your model. The more aspects you master, the more likely you will win a competition."

Only one "model and" is needed :P

Oh fine... 3rd place mini'ers will get 0.25 points. It's not much, but it's a favorable token to their accomplishments. This will have to be done when the entire mini code has been re-writen(2-3 weeks). Thanks Raptor:)

Fixed the other problem. Big thanks again!

what happened to the "Artist looking for work" forum ?

wasnt it under the employment section ?

The artist looking for work section has been discarded since artists can now submit their galleries to the new two gallery search options, Available for Freelance and Available for Fulltime:)

its sad to see that section go. cgtalk did the same :mad:

frankly, i dont think this new system draws that much attention(if any) compared to having a separate forum where artists can actually announce their availability and portfolio to possible clients.

is there any possibility you can bring it back or you made up your mind ?

FredH
09-12-2008, 01:59 AM
I can't bring back those sections. Instead, what I can do, is listen to suggestions on how you would like to bring more attention to the fulltime and freelance galleries? Also, if you have time, make the images too:p I am horribly busy.

Perhaps an image on the home forum page that says - Find Freelance Artists and Find Fulltime Artists?
and/or
Perhaps put something in the newsletter that highlights one or two available kickbutt artists?

What do you suggest?

MM
09-16-2008, 04:45 PM
u mean artists can only advertise their availability if they post work in the gallery ?

i cant find anything more useful than having a separate forum where artists can post their availability. its a little place where we can specify what type of work we are looking for, and post it exactly when we want to - unlike the gallery, which is NOT really that interactive.

can you tell what the problem is with a separate forum please like the one in polycount ?

http://boards.polycount.net/forumdisplay.php?f=51

as for the newsletter, its probably not going to be very usefull since most people just delete any newsletter and its once every few months so exposure is very limited.

I think i agree with MM here, a separate forum would be a good idea to help those guys who are looking for work get some coverage.

Id also like to say though i think that an awareness of location would be a great addition to it, i'm not sure how many other UK artists use this forum but it would be handy for any employer looking through the lists (and lists and lists) of people looking for work if they could specify a location, obviously some smaller companies are more interested if someone can start immediately for a small job, so if theyre in the UK its not much use if they have to find an artist,visit the portfolio and find out where they live before they can act.

I do think tho Fred an image on the front page of the forums perhaps showing the top five best looking people available for work would be cool and a good motivational factor to put in the effort when making a new thread

The jobs section on GA is currently being revised and is almost done. When it's completely finished, I will be sure to put the appropriate banners in key locations to bring employers directly to the artists available for hire galleries.

In addition, award icons for great art is being revised too. This icon here will soon appear beside the appropriate artwork in all the necessary gallery pages:

Thanks for your suggestions guys... almost there now:)

So I came across an ad that appeared a little disturbing especially if a child were searching the site but is this one of the allowed ads?

This is the link it goes too. (http://www.imvu.com/catalog/web_landing.php?p=googblk&c=maecus-3davatar&gclid=CJD--sHFoJoCFRKLxwodoyYs-A)

Just thought I'd give a heads up.

Hey FredH, I have a weird idea for a team "World Building Competition", my class did this art school, I thought it would be fun, I don't know if it's feasible, but's it's worth a shot. I used to plan some activities for my rpg forum..I love coming up with ideas of keeping members entertained.

Or a World building comp, where teams of 2-5 people form a group the appointed Captain starts a thread and each person 2-3 jobs(depending on how many are in the team): character designs, final illustrations, props, backgrounds/architecture/ story/storyboards/ animatics etc. Each Team elects a captain and second in case of emrgencies and they are the ones in charge of everyone and submitting the finals and uploading them to the thread and submissions page. Same rules still apply and Judging/voting will consider how well each team works together with style, continuity, idea and techniques etc.

Ah there is one catch to make it fair..a handicap if you will..not all the elite can group up against the newbies. Each team has to include different skill levels; beginner, intermediate, advanced, proffesional etc. or Junior member, member, senior member, Elite?

I think this would need a month to month and a half like DW to pull off.

is there any way to make it more clear to people not to post 2D works in the 3D showcase section? or at the very least get them moved to the right category. i know it's a little anal retentive to harp on it, but it's more than a little annoying

I just updated my profile and noticed it said under "Artisan news":

Wendy de Boer updated his profile

I know there are very few girls in the industry indeed, but still, that's pretty awkward. :lucky:

grimdc13

Yes DemonPrincess I've have had that problem as well.

Here's my suggestion for future comps:

May I for COmpetitions suggest that if people quit for a reason there either should be a :

1) A QUIT Button option on the join/edit/submit page that'll link you to the Forum Admin or Mod in charge to take your entry off the page. That way the judges don't have to wade the lots of unfinished entries. Or maybe the quit button does that for you.

2) If not , the old fashioned way PM you Admin or MOD , if for any reason you have to quit (and not because of the deadline excuse) but because Schedule conflicts or anything else.

Still deciding on wether they can keep their thread up until the soft deadline just in case they change their mind. and after the soft deadline a mod can delete the thread as long as the person has written the mod to take him/her off.

What about those who quit prematurely and want to complete their entry? Well they can get back on but they only get a second chance to get back. (they will still have their thread, btu have to rejoin and resubmit their entry) OBviously this can only work prior to the SOFT DEADLINE. After that is the cutoff. After that the thread and submission will have to be deleted.

Does this seem an option Everyone? It was hard wading through Comic Con entries and only finding like 2-3 pages of unfinished entires.

Dunno if this was mentioned or talked about already, but a lower navigation bar/option would be sweet. It probably isn't a big deal, but after reading a thread it would be good to have the navigation options at the bottom of the page/thread as well as the top. I know quite a few forums do this, which is why I'm so used to it.

Yeah, I know it doesn't take long to scroll up or anything, but what could it harm (you know, apart from wrecking the forums lol).

Jill'san

Elcura, which navigation menu bar are you referring to? The menu that says:

[ ] - Suggestions and Feedback thread

Yeah, that's the one. At the bottom of the page would be helpful, but whether you deem it necessary is your call.

I think their should be a noob section with noob contests with a list of pitfalls to avoid and maybe the order noobs should do things. So learning to model would be first thing I guess. I thing if we build a strong noob interface for self learners we can get more donations and bring in more people to be able to teach them

AcrobatFly

I'm inclined to believe that separating the newbies is unnecessary.

For one thing, I think that it interrupts the "community" concept here. The people you find on GA are quite unlike those on other CG sites. Everybody helps everybody and that's a pretty cool thing. You won't get ignored for being a newbie. More over, even when we think that your model needs major improvement, we're kind and courteous about telling you so. We can indeed be critical, but we certainly won't rip you to shreds like crazed wolves. There's no place for flaming or trolling here on GA. Trust me. I know. I'm the one who drafted that netiquette thread (http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7226) we've got here. Trolls, though very rare here, are dealt with appropriately.

Second, as I had previously intimated, I believe strongly that comps like the Sackboy mini provide ample opportunity for newbies to get their feet wet. The challenge of each topic might vary, but artists of all skill levels are welcome. Win or lose, the end goals for each entrant are to simply get better or make something cool. For a newbie, entering bigger comps like the DomWar might seem challenging or daunting, but you're welcome there too. Knowing that what matters is the journey and not the destination is enough.

AcrobatFly
03-02-2011, 10:05 PM
OT: I'm not sure if catering to newbies would generate any more donations. Apart from money being tight for everybody, a lot of the newbies here are poor students barely scraping by and choking on Ramen. It'd be nice if newbies could donate. Much appreciated to be sure. Not convinced that a change like this would boost donations though. That's just my opinion.

I understand. Well I guess GA is perfect then!. Well it sure is awesome place at least so all the noobs out there should definitely stick around with the support you get from here you won't be a noob for long:)

Hello eveyone :D ,

I'm new with GA and 3D world also, the first thing i wanna suggest here is could you add a light background for the website ?
Even if i'm new but i really like GA and everytimes i wander and and reading on our site, just for a few minutes but my eyes gets blurry. You know, some people are bad at reading text in black background color, so i hope you can do something but ff you cant change it i guess i have to adapt myself to it cuz i love here :thumb: .
