keo has entered the competition!
I didn't want to hit the submit button on the entry screen because I haven't finished the full-color illo yet, I'll re-upload the model sheet and the sketches at that point. this might clutter up the thread...

Pleasure yatch eh?:p This is actually a very good idea, however, the lines on your modeling sheet... are those needed? Did you marker him on a lined paper sheet? Or did you add them in photoshop?
they're just a PS layer... I was going for a blueprint kinda look, you find them distracting?
thanks also for the crit about the castle texture being stretched, btw!

Yup, it's distracting. Since the squares are so big, it makes your giant look small. If you have time, try to come up with a nice design. Something like this:

or

About the castle, no problem. everything else on it was very good... except that one tiny spot;)
Good luck

Love the thumbnails. I agree with FredH about the model sheet, everything must be straight on. A good design would be cool too...I should've done that myself, heh. Good luck.
okie dokie, here's an update to the model sheet and the current state of the winning pose. I intend to have the final image pretty much done tonight, but I'll probably use the extra week to polish and tweak.

looks great so far! looks like its nearing completion

Really sweet concept. The angle was well thought out.
For the modeling sheet, I wonder if it would look cool if you made it look old and crispy, like an old scroll map. Right now, I find that the blue lines makes your image look like it's from a modern note book that people buy in the local school supplies store. If you made your image look old, it would tie in better with your 19th century creature and style.
Regardless, nice work so far. Your last image is really something!
Fred, I had to laugh, because the blue lines were scanned in from a cheap Staples graph paper notebook!!
Ok, here's were I'm at, I'll probably let it sit until next weekend so I can look at it again with fresh eyes: updated model sheet and winningpose:

the drop boat is a great addition:p The final illustration is perfect, but I have to agree with Fred, the modeling sheet still looks very modern and out of place.
Hope you will have time to do something neat with that sheet.

I actually see this monster to have his yacht on the top as his feeding table. ;) So, usually he hunts by being underwater with only the yacht visible to attract visitors, and then grabing them with his tentacles. Hell, yeah! First, he goes underwater to release humans from his yacht to the water surface (otherwise it would be difficult for him reaching them on the yacht) and then just take everyone from the water.
In this situation probably the cafe with umbrelas and the escaping boat is unnecessary. But it's just how I see it. :D
hm, so sepia-toned gridlines, dirt and crumpled up doesn't sell old? I'm not sure where else I should take it, good thing I have a few more days to sleep on it. :)
Socket7: nah, this guy's an enslaved beast of burden, not an massive Victorian anglerfish with a taste for aristocrats. If he were to break his chains of bondage, who's to say what might happen?

Okay, you rock your way! :) The old paper should be yellow-brownish I guess... without any white color on it. Also maybe torn on edges to a great extent. Kinda worn out more than it is now with some partial degradation.
Something like this:

Hope it helps. :)

yeah, socket 7 said it best. I must be the white that is making it look new. Even though you put in the dirt and scratches, it still looks like a warn and tarnished.. modern notebook piece of paper:p You even left the holes marks on the right side of the sheet.
Sorry for picking on you so much, but with a final winning illustration like the one you have, I want to be sure your modeling sheet doesn't take you down:D

Dee-lishous. Way to pro paint. I want a poster advertisement for the yachts.
okie dokie, I think I got it through my head what you guys were suggesting (even got to play with fire [!] to make it happen). :D
FredH

The fire marks was a great addition:thumb: Here, I have taken the liberty to make a small sample. I didn't clean up the borders around your sketches because this is just an example:)
I removed a bit of the checkered lines in some areas. This would make it look like Time wore them out a little.

Just in case, here is the photoshop file: www.artbyfh.org/extras/nautilus_modelsheet_1.zip
You have a great base, now, you just need to have some fun with it in photoshop. Personally, I find this stage the best to work on. Just stack up layer after layer and see what interesting effects you get:)

The version FredH made is showing you pretty much of the direction. :) But actually it should be more yellow-orange. If you make all these adjustments you'll make it nice and catchy. :)

The perspective is deffinately gold on this one. I've always been a fan of the kind of gear you equip you characters with. Functional yet elegant.
Good luck man!
