hey all just posting what im modeling. pretty far into it but figured now i would start posting it so i can keep a good flow of updates to ya :) anywho heres a tower that is connected to anther land mass which hasnt been drawn but its connect via a bridge.
also see in the center theres a little white line. its really small. anywho that would be for scale. thats a person.
tell me what ya think. this is a little experiment to see if i can come up with a somewhat unique architecture style.

looks great so far! Can u throw us some details about this building eg. environment setting, purpose etc?

alright so basically its a place for worship right now anyways. its more like a very large pillar connected via a very large bridge. the civilization that lives there is so massive in population that they made this large so it was possible for millions to visit at a time.
heres a side show of what i have modeled so far. im trying to show you guys but at the same time not show to much.
Frozan
05-21-2007, 12:55 AM
getting interesting at all? im still workin really hard on this one. will possibly show it shaded if i get enough people lookin at this lol.

I am still a little unclear where you are heading with this. Will you make a concept out of your model, or the other way around?
The first pic looks pretty cool, however, it looks a bit dangerous to walk on. Perhaps a railing of some kind?
Frozan
05-21-2007, 01:25 AM
alright Fred you make a good point. its time to unveil this lol. ill do a quick thing for scale.
Frozan
05-21-2007, 01:35 AM
alright so im gonna show u some of it just for scale reasons. there is railing but the scale is insane. hope this answers some of your questions :)
Frozan
05-21-2007, 08:06 AM
ps please crit as i go. i want to get the most out of this. maybe ideas for props. im gonna have some trouble getting the to big big and have the people still relate on a scale level somehow.
Frozan
05-24-2007, 07:21 AM
heres an update on where things are. pretty much gonna show you all i have so far. :)

top notch! you really have got much much better and cleaner at modeling. I can't wait for the textures since this is where you will make any turd shine :)
but..................why do the bridge supports have so many segments compared to the much larger and much more important buildings? maybe something to look!
ps. i'm wearing my new coat, it's fuzzy :)
Frozan
05-25-2007, 03:14 AM
haha fuzzy as love! anywho case anyone is wondering I gave don my coat for his b day! we are close friends in RL. anywho thanks for the comment, im trying to be very clean, still trying to decided what to do with the major building. ill figure it out, I know for one thing i would like it to carry the same theme as the worship looking area. the over hangs for sure are going to go somewhere.
i need to come up with some prop designs and also make the bridge have a little more going on around to top of it so its not so blank.
FredH

It's cool seeing someone make an environment for a change. it's coming out really well. Keep it up:)

Hey I know you... haha. Nice to see your stuff.

I like it, nice colors....... oh wait eh eh damm nothing more to say
Good luck
you know what would be great? huge chains going from the worship building to the the bridge.. (so heavy it needs massive chains to keep it in place) huge chains the size of skyscrapers always exites me and makes me feel really small.. i think that would really help to show some scale

05-30-2007, 02:14 PM
hhmmmm... looks good for sure man, your going to have a level design postion in no time.
kurocrash
05-30-2007, 05:23 PM
nice work man! as i need to really start working on some environments myself, it's good to see your whole process. it's looking pretty sharp; definitely a neat design.

heres a little update shot. almost ready to texture the goods :)
looking good, but still I think it needs huge chains :P

05-31-2007, 04:50 PM
if not chains then something. maybe lines with more banners hanging. the two building still seem to have a disconnect between them. something above the deck of the bridge (mabe chains) could help to tie the two buildings together.
Frozan
05-31-2007, 05:51 PM
yeah there are these small banners in my concept that i want to put in. like long hanging ropes with little banners on them like hangin cloths. ill post that image sooner or later. this project is turning out to be very large. im excited.

06-01-2007, 04:48 AM
What also would be nice to see: some statues on the bridge.

ohh nice! ill keep that in mind
Frozan
06-02-2007, 12:16 AM
ok so im gonna add statues. there not gonna be human like but im gonna add them. im also adding these ropes that have little flags hangin from them. one problem is i have to have this finished by Wednesday morning. i think its possible but not possible to make those extra things. after wednesday ill add them and rework it to be even stronger.
your guys sigguestions are great and i thank you for them. heres a little ambiant occ i did just to see what it would look like. gonna look pretty nice when i bake that in. :)

This is great man, I have seen just your first posts, now I came back and I see a lot of developments. It's great , I like this, are you gonna texture it?, if so I should wait and asks you some technical questions at the time,
any way nisce shuts.
Krimble
06-02-2007, 05:43 AM
Yeah it looks great, i'm looking forward to see those extra things
Vailias

what's throwing the sense of scale off is that right now EVERYTHING is huge. There is not one normal human sized banner or basket or door in this complex, and so it looks like its a lot smaller than you want it.
If you hang a few like 4-5 foot banners around the doorways, perhaps in an arc across them, or between the statues, that might help reinforce the hugeness of the scene. Of course it won't matter too much if your normal perspective is from the human sized point of view.
Frozan
06-03-2007, 03:55 PM
yeah u throw a very good point. after i texture it you will probably be able to see it a whole lot better. thanks for pointing that out though. im trying to build a list of things i can add to help with scale and just make it not so blank. by the way welcome to the forum :)
lookin good! i've been watching this project progress and I'll be checking in to see how the textures develop with it. :)
Frozan
06-05-2007, 11:01 AM
wouldnt say to much about this as im just kind of playing around with texture to get a feel for where i want to go. but yeah learning AO maps isnt to bad if there is any crit to be made on this post is the AO map working alright?
Frozan
06-06-2007, 09:30 PM
hey guys anyone know about AO maps. im having trouble with this seam edge. see how it gets black? i tried increasing the fill texture seams. but its not working. im doing this in maya
Frozan
06-06-2007, 11:39 PM
hmm i think i got it figured out. we will see it has to do with the scale of my scene i believe.
is it reallly such a problem? cant you just edit in the baked AO maps?
I mean anything automaticly generated wil give you artifacts, no mather how big or small.
Default
06-08-2007, 12:46 AM
looking nice man! i'm inspired to do some level deign now
Frozan
06-08-2007, 01:58 AM
so the textures are gonna get a reworking, basically a group of people going by jynx productions would like to use this as the center piece for there city in a game. so yeah gonna be a little lack on updates for bit. thanks for all the comments everyone :) next post will have some texture shots in it.
Marcus Dublin
06-08-2007, 06:51 AM
By the way the seams your getting could be caused by overlapping UV's, treat them like you would if your were baking a normal map. Try regenerating the AO without the overlapped UV's and see if the seams show up again.:)

Frozan
06-08-2007, 11:12 AM
good call ill look into that. im trying to come up with an idea of what the textures really are.
Frozan
06-09-2007, 03:58 AM
so ive been working really hard to see if i can get these texture more believable, its taken some work and I had to ask around work to get some good answers. as a forum questioner, what do you all think about the quality of these textures.
I personally think the rocks are to smooth texture wise, I mean the building is huge, the scale of the rocks should be huge so you would have alot more detail, more cracks bumps etc.. I mean take a look at the rocks Peter Böhme did http://peterboehme.com/gameart.php?v=eonenv. You see even for a smaller boulder you have alot more detail going on, alot more surface definition.
Frozan
06-09-2007, 05:04 AM
then again those textures look like a elephant skin shader on a rock. maybe ur right but personally if u were standing next to it u would understand more why its so smooth. so hers a render with a closer look. see the human for scale.
also i don't necessarily agree with the bigger it is the more detail is required. i will defiantly take into consideration though. thanks for the crit evil :)
i might take some cracks into there. :)

just accidentally discovered hardware fog in view port for maya. im freaking out.
Frozan
06-10-2007, 04:42 PM
just a little update. all the rocks are done minus the moss. still need some on some spots.
Vikkie
06-12-2007, 01:39 PM
looking reeally good Frozan, but the rocks would look better if they had a darker grayish hue at the down 1/3 since they are wet . Also there would be moss where the rocks touch the water. I'm loving where you are going with this :)

Frozan: “i need to take a break from this, not feeling the vibes anymore currently”
It happens to the best of us, especially on something as ambitious as this. I look forward to your progress when you come back this.:)
Marcus
oh no you don't...
I'll counter with some inspirational photos from Yemen:http://www.jorgetutor.com/yemen/wadidhahr/wadidhahr.htm
Check out those buildings perched on the tops of giant rock formations!
:) sometimes you just need an infusion of real life reference. but I also know that a break sometimes gives you the perspective to look at a project with fresh eyes.
Frozan

ohh by a break i mean lik a day or two haha. man i love this forum such drive and passion hha!
thanks

alright so ive been working on this tower more and now that its gonna be in a game i have to work on it more. by more i think it needs to be more interesting and also slight more geometry details to help break up the walls some for the players eye. currently working on that. ill keep u all updated on it.
Revamp includes:
Extra geometry
addition of props such as
boxes, vases, ladders, various building materials, etc.
rebuild of lighting. and rebake.
rethinking of building texture style.
ill keep u all updated like i said but heres a small piece

cool project,
what is your favorite shot?
I think making it based on your favorite shot will boost up your quality and speed for this project ...
Frozan
06-18-2007, 02:46 AM
Thatdon - Thanks i think? lol
xvampire - a lot of my shots that i showed you will be seeing when your walking around in it. im slamming quality into everything i can think of as i want to pull a lot of shots from it.
along with that this is also being thrown into a game engine when completed and ill be walking around taking in game screen shots, so a lot of the details im adding are going to those areas. walkable to close to the player spots.
nice details on the bridge, hit us with some shots of the entire scene when you can. :)

nice man, really liking the vast enviro... fog rocks too, makes for a pretty pic :) New rocks are awesome, little fake highlights on some of those cracks might be nice? I like to jump ahead of myself :) Keep us updated.

yup getting a reformat in right now, should be good for the cpu soul. then back to work on this piece of jazz thanks for the crits
Frozan
08-17-2007, 10:07 PM
so i must admit the task of making this tower scene work is daunting. it will get done eventually. i hate to say it but its driving me batty. since the reformat ive started work on a fern test which quickly became a forest. ill make a new post for that one. in the mean time just wanted to apologize for the lack of work on this project. i look at hopefully working and finishing this one after the forest.

Hey man,
This looks freaking nice! Really well Modled as Textured so far, I can't wait when you will touch the Bridge and the "tents" above hehe.
Please dont quit this Project, to good tbh!
Matroskin
10-29-2007, 02:10 PM
interesting architecture I should say. Those tents add lighter feeling to the heavy structure of tower. It really feels like somewhere in mountains...hidden between peaks and clouds... I know it is not exactly the right style but it makes me think of Tibet.
Some old freaky bended trees on those huge rocks may be in a good place. U know, like on Chinese or Japansese paintings.
