Although this is probably great news for a lot of people, as there aren't really that many entries close to being finished (mine could probably use some more loving as well) this is the 2nd extension if I remember correctly (the 1st being from 18th - 22nd and now to the 28th) and it seems to defeat the purpose of having a deadline.
It just seems rather pointless to push yourself to get something done on time within the deadline if it's just going to get pushed ahead. Hopefully this doesn't sound angry or anything, it's just an observation...as it happened with DW2 and it seems like practically every contest before it :P
I realize that the new time could definitely be used to push nearly completed things even further but it just annoys me sometimes, that's all.
Anyways, good luck to everyone, use your new time wisely!

I understand your points, but where did you find the first extension? I believe this has been the first and only extension for this comp.

Wasn't the original deadline for this comp the 18th? I was sure that it was but I could definitely be wrong. It may have been just an unofficial date rather than an official extension...if so..my bad.

18 does sound familiar. I am trying really hard to remember if I said something about this date, but 18 is a friday. I never end a comp on a friday because I know everyone is busy with work. It's always monday and, sometimes but rarely, wednesday.

Meh, I could very well be wrong. The point is that, from my experience, it seems almost every competition gets pushed ahead by at least a week and it seems that a reward for not getting something done on time is more time , in the work place, the exact opposite thing would probably happen. Again, I'm not trying to come off as an ass or anything, I'm just sayin'
PEACE

I thought I was going to be the late kid to enter the race, but the extension helps.
:lucky: shocked but sweet :thumb:
Even though the extension helps me out (a lot), I do agree with Gavin. My time management sucks and my entry would have been "sweeter" if I would have finished it by the original deadline. Maybe bonus pts should be given to those who submit before the original deadline if there are extensions in future comps.

I defiantly agree with Gavin...
This severely hurts the people that are ready and are responsible. It actually kind of makes me upset...

I agree with Gavin as well and I felt the same way during DW2 but I’m sure for Game Artisans first comp Fred wanted the best showing possible. Honestly had the comp ended today the final results would have been in my opinion underwhelming and lopsided. Is this completely fare for those who managed to finish on time no but if your entry was awesome on the first due date then it’s still going to be awesome on the extended due date if not more so. I’ve seen comps on a number of forums extend there deadlines and it’s just the nature of the game when you have 50 entries and maybe 8 are up to snuff. For the most part even if you added an additional week to begin with you’d still have the same situation, hopefully for the next comp there are more than enough strong entries to keep the submission date firm and not have to fall into the extension trap. All in all I have no solutions for this as it’s a game time decision by the forum moderators.

The only point I can make here for the 'other side' is that most of these comps are done in free time, and that varies from person to person. I worked a little bit of crunch at work, bought a new house, helped start planning a wedding ... and ALMOST finished a DWII entry. If you have the time, its great to steamroll a deadline and be proud ... but many don't. Just because you don't meet the date on a comp like this doesn't mean your a slacker .... its frappin' TOUGH. Not everyone has the same time available, no matter what your level of dedication is. A bunch of people need a little bit of that ... whatsit called ... that 'sleep' stuff too. :)

Gavin, good point... but, YESS!!!! However, I crammed everything I could into my entry last night. I didn't know I could texture that effeciently in that short period of time...

maybe creating realistic deadlines for working professionals would be a better way to go in the future. i would think something on the scale of dominance war should have 2 months, and something like this comp should have 1 month. i can see the frustration gavin and others are feeling, but at the same time, they should have seen it coming, considering the low number of participants that looked poised to finish.

Yeah, I have to agree that a changing deadline isn't that much fun when you are already at the finish line. Though I welcomed the one in DW2, as the deadline for that one was to short to begin with. Also, by having a wider deadline that would probably bring in more of those working professionals, who didn't enter due to the small window to finish this competiton.

I'm sorry, but a month is plenty of time and the Dom War was 6 weeks to start with. Anything longer and you would get bored.
If the 1 month comps turn into a 6 week comp, they wont be fun anymore. The idea is to see what you can do in the time allotted, so you need to handle your time in a way that you will be able to finish.

Big Toe, I believe I handled my time quite well thank you. As I also know alot of full time profesionals did, but when you unfortunately go into crunch or other issues come up within that 1 month, then really you aren't dealing with that much time. Maybe for someone that is working freelance can choose be a little bit more flexible ( which must be nice ) and doesn't have the issues with time as others might ( since your time really isn't your own, in a fulltime house ). I personally think having a competition that has a wider window would give more in the industry a chance to participate, which in my mind is more important that becoming bored as you say. Maybe with the extended time, you could do two?, since you wouldn't find an extended competition that challenging? Just a thought.

true, freelancers, like myself get to pick the jobs they want, instead of having them forced upon. And maybe that's it, freelancers have to mange their time so they can start work on the next project as soon as possible, so manging time for a comp comes easy. Plus there is no crunch time, so in the end Freelance artist may have an advantage.

some of us have full time jobs and women to deal with. i can't spend more than an hour or so a day working on a comp, so i don't think that is slow. look at the amount of people that didn't finish any given competition, and i am sure they are in the same boat

It just a competition. Things always come up, family, job, whatever. A month was tight for me on crunch but if you really want to do it then you make the time if not then you don't. No harm, no foul and at the end of the day it's a friendly competition...not worth losing your job over.
That said, 4 weeks or 6 makes no difference to me...it's always one of those things that expand to fit the time you have and then still find yourself short. I had alot of fun and would love to have more people compete and complete in the next one... the more the merrier.
