Game music and sound effects

I have a friend that wants to get into a game music/sound effects job. He knows his music stuff already (he pwnds on the piano) He has FL studio and enough basic gear to record songs (I think) I just want to know from you guys, what it takes to land a job doing sound effects and game music. Also if you have any good links on how to videos, sound effect techniques, any related stuff, then that would be greatly appreciated.

Unless he landed a gig at a really small studio he would be doing either music or sfx, not both. Isn't sound effect work just a lot of recording sounds then manipulating and layering them? Can't be that hard to jump head first into, just grab your mic and go out into the world.
