Mini Comp suggestions thread.

Hey guys,

I was wondering whether you thought it would be a good idea to have a suggestions thread for mini comp themes. Might see some interesting input.

Personally, I would like to see a "Create a Final Fantasy summon" or "Create your own transformer" mini comp.

What do you guys think?

Something like create a character if they where a good or bad guy, so mario would become a wario and vice versa.

I was thinking that Enviro art would be good value, probably once the Unearthly Challenge is done but I would certainly enjoy an excuse to make some props. Low poly enviro props to fit a room or concept, would be a bit different. Not sure whether it would just be a theme or a whole other genre of mini-comp... Anyway.

Hey everyone.

To me concept art is always about new ideas and creativity. Something that's amazing to work on and also hard to create. For example, creating a new night creature, a new night legend. I mean something fabulous except Vampires and Werewolves. I'm talking about a new race that doesn't come out at night to drink blood or to change because of the moon. It seems a great amusing concept, but it's hard. I think these kinds of ideas can take attentions and can be motivating.

I actually like your idea Nights2006. I do like to create my own transformer and I believe many people do want that. Since there are lots of transformers fan and so many artists, I guess it might work.

I wouldn't mind having a partner or team comp where you have to pass the WIP back and forth until either person submits it.

Themes: classic movie monsters, aliens, observational characters ( inspired by everyday realife people/animals, Weirdest stuff you can out do others with contest.

Seeing as it's getting close to time to do some new non-DW minis sometime soon... I just noticed that Slaughter posted a great low-poly human armor model in the SDK thread. It would be great to use that for another SDK mini at some point. (Maybe not right away, as the DW4 mini was also an SDK.) I also think that the Kingdom Hearts mini was so huge, many of us wouldn't mind doing the exact same mini all over again (only choosing different characters this time around, of course!)

It will be great to have a Team effort Comp.... same as Comic Con and Kingdom Hearts but in this there should be a team to two, one with the hero character and other with the villain character, the final composition should be the fighting scene b/t them or some sort of interaction between them the Best interaction b/t the villain and the hero win :p

Umm you all seem to like big beefy warriors. I would love to see what u'd come up with, for an artic warrior.

All i can think of, is an armour made of seals,polar bears and whale skeletons. With eskimo/inuit style clothing. Humm it could be combined with glowly magics.

I would like to do "Create a Final Fantasy summon" and a Kingdomhearts remix.

IDEAS:
*Change a classic anime style character into a much more realistic character.

*Weapon of Choice (developing a unique and/or beautiful weapon.)

*Draw a character in there living space. The living space should heavily reflect the likes, personality, and habits of the character.

*Pick ANY three (minimum) existing living creatures and combine them to make a new mythical beast.

*Magic spells. Show a character casting a magic spell and show it's effects.

*Sweet Ride. Design an interesting mode of transportation.


I'm really looking forward to UC.

IDEA!
I say we create a 3d/2d mini comp of comic strips in the news paper. Take your favorite comic strip character(mine would be calvin or rat from 'pearls before swine'). Maybe recreate the character some so they are not so simple like the actual comics are.

So many options out there! Dilbert, Get Fuzzy, Over the Hedge, Pears before swine, calvin and hobs, garfield,.. and so many more... final entry would have to have a small thumb nail of the actual comic strip with your character you chose in it.

Looks like everyone is still eating turkey and are with family over the christmas weekend. Will start a new mini early this coming week, however, future minis suggestion threads will be a little different. It will be more of a, "Suggestions and do it thread" type thread. in 2011, Anyone, for 2-3 weeks, can run the mini they suggested and get a community award as a 2011 Mini Master.

Womball, your idea has great benefits to it, but getting concept artists to work with 3d artists is a bit tough. In the past, this idea has come up, but at the time, we didn't have enough of a concept art presence to consider it. Perhaps in the future:)

How about we have a 2d mini with particular topic,and then we take 3 winning pieces for a 3d mini,i'm speaking for myself here,but i loose to much time on concept,or not doing it at all just start from 3d concept(which i'm not that happy that much) .It would be great if we can skip that part and just take a concept which is there already,there are so many talented 2d people here who can produce a stunning piece of concept art,it doesn't have to be in color just black,white and gray,but it would be appreciated if they could make a front,side and back shot of the character.

One more idea,we had a Pre Dom War General mini which was very popular how about a 3d mini with the same specs,just diffuse no normal maps 3k tris,making a Generals mount,i'm a bit tired of characters,would like to do some animal kinda thing (dragons,boars,rhinos,gryphons);)

Here's my 2 cents:

Cryptozoology - Choose a well-known creature or create your own bizarre hybrid creature to add to the Cryptozoology library (i.e. Sasquatch , Loch Ness, Chupacabra, Champ, etc...). This could be a very fun comical/light-hearted contest.

Slayer - With the announcement of the demon hunter from Blizzards Diablo 3 why not create a character based in the same category, design your own Zombie/Demon/Vampire slayer.

Dragon Age 2 - With all the hype surrounding the release of DA2 we could create our own fantasy characters that could exist in the games main world.

Don't know if this has already been mentioned, but I think a great comp could revolve around the idea of Alternative Art of Disney branded characters. I have seen so many great pieces of Alt Art focused on it and think it would be really cool to see it in 3D and concept form. Alternate versions of any character could really bring out the creativity for these already classic and timeless characters. Anyone else agree? Some examples below.

It'd be cool to have a mini-challenge with significant design constraints.

Examples: only use 2 or 3 colors, only have curved surfaces, characters without legs, etc etc.

How about a well advertised challenge where you have to help a noob or just decent crits in the WIP section with crits and paintovers. A lot of people only show up for the challenges so perhaps this may help with greater forum participation. Offer awards to people who really help others improve and link back to the thread for references in the future.

Anatomy contests about common issues could also help too. Clothing and metal texturing is another potential contest.

A color spec contest where your given a model, normal and diffuse and have to create an effective color spec. Rendering and material effects are also part of the contest.

Lighting contests in marmoset and UDK. Go over the concepts of 3 point lighting, portrait lighting, studio lighting, bounce cards and more.

I suggest a cross-genre contest -- depict an environment, character or concept from one setting as it would appear in another. The difference can be as extreme as a Drider from the Dungeons and Dragons setting remade as a utility bot in the year 3000, or as simple as re-equipping an elf sorcerer with an archaeologists outfit from the early 1900s.

A drawbridge in a Tron universe or an electric power plant in the fantasy world (where they literally have to tame lightning) are potential examples for environment pieces.

Just think of something that you've only seen in one genre and attempt to translate it into another. Genres include (but are definitely not limited to) Sci-Fi future, post apocalyptic, steam-punk, horror, fantasy, modern day and alternate-modern day. (Alternate-modern day is a world like ours where a different history has changed our daily lives. Steam-punk is one example, the world of Full Metal Alchemist is another -- alchemy replaces physics in terms of technology).
