I saw this big surprise the other day. CGSociety.org took over Game-Artist.net; literally. Staff change and all.

New blood pops up all of the time. This is no different. Just because it's CGS behind it all doesn't make it Earth shattering news. It's an interesting business choice on their part, but only time will tell if it's worth the investment.
Mod hat off for a second.
I've seen some great, great CG sites come and go over the past decade. Given the choice between the laid back, almost family-like environment of GameArtisans and the somewhat strict and occasionally unreasonably bitter environment of CG Talk, I'd choose GameArtisans each and every time.
It's not that CG Society is the "evil empire" or anything. Quite the opposite. In fact, it has some of the nicest people on board - from mods to members. Unfortunately, to properly manage the massive membership and thread count, they sometimes employ a firm hand. Threads get closed often and without express explanation. Mods lose their temper now and then, not usually without provocation though. Good threads get "lost" in the shuffle.
I'm not saying that Game-Artist.net will suffer from the same failings. It might well not. However, if even a fraction of CGS' core membership joins then it just might. CGS has a style of doing things. It works for them, mostly. How well this will translate over to the acquired site remains to be seen.
That's just my personal opinion.
I think we should take a wait and see approach, one and all.
There are tons of CG sites out there. CGS's acquisition of Game-Artist.net is no more of a threat than the current existence of 3D Total, Polycount, or any of the countless other "biggies" out there. Business as usual around these parts.
Jedi mind trick, fellas. Nothing to see here. Move along. :)
