Quick Announcement:
This will be my last 3d minicomp for you guys. ThatDon, our newest mod and mini-comp fiend, will be taking over for me starting next comp. Ill be helping him learn the ropes throughout this comp, so be sure to give him a hard time! :)

As for me, I'll still be around to give crits and encouragement, and as for more 'official' duties, I'll be moving on to the 2d minicomps, (once that backend system has been completed). So it's not like I'm going anywhere :)
That said, on to the minicomp!

Theme: MINI JUDGES

A couple years ago a game called Final Fantasy Twelve was released for the PS2. I never played it. I don't even know if it was any good, as far as the FF games go (I'm partial to VI, myself), but I do know that there were these kick butt 'judge' characters in the game. I don't know what their role was or what purpose they served other than to be absolutely cool armored guys.

Look how cool they are!

http://30lives.com/gaorg/minicomp14c.jpg

The objective for this minicomp: Build a CHIBI JUDGE! You can either reconstruct one of the judges from FF12, or make an armored judge of your own up out of your head, but do your best to MINI/CHIBI-fy him/her. Basically, this is a make-a-kickbutt-knight contest

THE SPECS

-700 Tris
-1x512x512 Diffuse mapsize. You can use Alpha and Glow support maps, but NO NORMAL MAPS OR SPEC MAPS.

Yes, that says no normal or spec. This is putting the MINI back in MINI CHALLENGE.

Otherwise, anything goes! These minicomps are meant to be fun, quick, goofy, and just quick ways to spend an afternoon or two.

Please post all work-in-progress shots and questions in this thread!

THE SUBMISSION:

-Your final submission should be in the form of a SINGLE image. This image should include a wireframe, flat textures, a final render, and anything else you wish to show us! (high res sculpts, close ups, etc.) Please label the high res models, if you decide to show it.

-When you have completed your submission, use the following link to submit it:

http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/mini/character.html

Remember to hit the upload button!

THE DEADLINE: So, the soft deadline last minicomp worked really well, so let's stick with that for another go. See the next post for information about soft deadlines.

Voting will begin Sunday, July 6th 2008, at midnight!

GOODLUCK!

FAQ:
----
Here's some questions that might come up:

MINI JUDGES FAQ:
So, Make the most badass chibi knight I can using 700tris and a 512 diffuse/alpha/illumination. Connection to FF is encouraged but not required. Do I have it right?

Yes, but "Connection to FF is encouraged but not required " means that you dont HAVE to use those FF12 concepts, it doesn't mean you could chibi-fy a knight from any other game. You could make a knight of your own up though, and try and incorporate all sorts of ideas into that, but in the end, above all, it should be a badass knight. The primary goal here is to create a knight that might fit along side those guys in the brief.

MINICOMPS FAQ:

What is a 'Soft Deadline'? A soft deadline means that there's no fixed deadline. I will enable community voting at the 'Soft Deadline' time, but I will not close the contest to submissions. That means if you're running late with you're entry, you can still submit, but you might not get as many votes (or...well...any, if ts TOO late). It's at your advantage to submit your entry as close to the 'Soft Deadline' as possible.

Why can't I submit? I'm getting an error!
Try these two things:
-Log out and log back in with the 'remember me' function toggled on.
-Double check to make sure you hit the 'upload' button before you hit submit! That accounts for most errors.

Can I use advanced Lighting/Global Illumination/Final Gather/Etc.
Sorry, but no. Try and keep your lighting to only using standard lights. This helps voters judge you based off the quality of the modeling and texturing, and not the lighting engine. It's also closer to what you might find in-game. If a minicomp allows advanced lighting, that will be written in the brief.

-If you still have trouble, send me a PM. I'm here to help.

Im basing mine of these "judges"
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o234/erjmech03/american-idol-judges.jpg lol jk jk

but 700 Tris and no normals

ugh this'll be a challenge for me

cunipshun, i kinda intended this to be a make-a-badass-knight comp more than a 'make your favorite judge' comp.

So let me see if I get this right, just so there's no confusion later on:

Make the most badass chibi knight I can using 700tris and a 512 diffuse/alpha/illumination. Connection to FF is encouraged but not required.

Do I have it right?

This sounds like fun sir. I figure if I can squeeze it in to my little schedule of playing with my son and looking for a job, I might be able to play around with this comp. Getting it a bit late I suppose though. Ah well, will see what I can do. Fun concept for a soft contest though, kudos me man, kudos.

Some questions:
1. Only humanoids? How about tentacles, wings, double head etc?
2. Only fantasy? How about heavy armored hi-tech guy (Bigun for example :) )

:(
Not cgchat all over again :(
though i do understand the situation could not have been avoided :) Thanks for all the work ya did for the mini comps! :D

That judge second from the left reminds me of Grendalh(?) from Xenogears 1.

Vailias
06-20-2008, 06:45 AM
Inpw: I think that if you feel like making a Cthulu-Hydra, thats fine, so long as it has armor or something to make it a Cthulu-Hydra who's profession is Knighthood. Just remember tentacles are expensive for a 700 tri budget.

Also given that FF is the inspiration here, you could go pretty techy, just throw in a blade on whatever gun you use and its perfect for the FF universe.
Seriously, they've had Mecha, aircraft, dragons, beam weapons, motorcycles, trains, gun arms, oversized swords, and a kid with a tail. So long as its slightly over the top and looks cool, you can get away with it in some FF game. Seriously, look at Kefka. The guy is a general who dresses like a clown, and is one of the most beloved villains in the whole ff universe.

blankslatejoe
06-20-2008, 08:47 AM
Mchuge!! Good to see you dude. :)

IPNW - well, I suppose you could go as odd-shapes as you want, but ARMOR IT UP and make it CHIBI. If you look at the examples, there's no actual 'skin' showing. I think that's one of the key things to making badass knights, is to cover all the skin. As for Chibi...well, there's plenty of google refs for that :)

For your tech question; bigun is awesome and all, but there's a big difference between mech/robot/cyborg and knight. If you can work tech stuff in and really still have it feel like a chibi judge/knight, then awesome--that's the primary goal. But otherwise, I'd keep the tech stuff to a minimal for this contest.

butt_sahib, don't worry, I'll still be around. I'm going to work on getting the 2d contests back up and interesting. They really weren't getting enough attention before.

cwong - ao is allowed if you overlay it into the diffuse map :)

I was thinking of using just planes for his tall collars, crown and cape, but can u make them so that you see both sides the same? or do you have to extrude or shell? Just the models around 420 polys now, should cover me either way I guess but still curious.

Also, do you think the head is large enough for chibi or should I blow that out a bit more?

blankslatejoe
06-20-2008, 12:22 PM
matias, you can change the statistics in max to display triangle instead of polies...polies are kind of ambiguous, they can be 3 sides, 4 sides, even more, so it throws the count a bit.

right click on the 'viewport name' (right, left, perspective, etc) and theres a config option there for it.

K so It doesn't have to be ff right, so I picked the Skull Knight from berserk to chibi

ThatDon
06-20-2008, 05:40 PM
The idea behind this comp is to either make or remake a FFXII inspired "Judge" Knight in chibi fashion. So remaking another character from a different game/franchise/universe would be going against the theme of this comp.

With that said the ultimate call is up to Joe.

YdoUwant2know
06-20-2008, 06:02 PM
The goal of the comp is to make a bad ass Chibi knight. Per the FAQ I think Skull Knight may work.

FAQ:
----
Here's some questions that might come up:

MINI JUDGES FAQ:
So, Make the most badass chibi knight I can using 700tris and a 512 diffuse/alpha/illumination. Connection to FF is encouraged but not required. Do I have it right?

Yes.

blankslatejoe
06-20-2008, 06:18 PM
"Connection to FF is encouraged but not required " means that you dont HAVE to use those FF12 concepts, it doesn't mean you could chibi-fy a knight from any other game. You could make a knight of your own up though, and try and incorporate all sorts of ideas into that, but in the end, above all, it should be a badass knight.

If you think about it, that's what the unifying theme with the judges is, they have lavish, late middle-ages/renaissance style armor and have a slight fantasy twist to them. Other than that, there's not much to actually say it's from the FF12 world. 'Badass knight' is the main theme. Do your best to make a knight that looks like it could fit alongside them.

SO, I'm gonna side with Thatdon on this one, sorry necro! It was a good thing to bring up, I'll update the Faq now

Thanks butt_sahib and BSJoe. Thats a sweet tip. Do you think it would be worth making a high one? Might be overkill though. It's nice to have a nice diggestable challenge. I'm in.

blankslatejoe
06-20-2008, 07:18 PM
a high poly one? Depends how fast you are--The only thing that would be useful for would be for baking out an AO to slap over the diffuse. I know a few people who are very very fast at high poly, and then retopo a low poly from that, but I myself am quicker at just painting the details like that in from scratch, and only building a low poly.

Matias
06-20-2008, 08:53 PM
Thanks Blankslatejoe, I changed that over to show the tris, just another quick question to clear up do I still add the vert count to that, atm I got 594 tris and 361 verts, now does that mean I still got like a hundred tris in hand or does it actually mean I'm still way over?
http://members.optusnet.com.au/matias.jakku/Linking%20Files/Matias%20CHIBI%20Judge%2003.jpg
I've been cuttin down on alot of fluff detail and got him to were I think the texture could be good but if I had the budget for a little more detail in the model I'd like to use it.
Sorry guys for all the questions!

Raptor5399
06-20-2008, 09:29 PM
Well both the knights I wanted are being made by other people so I guess that puts me in the make something up category :paper:

blankslatejoe
06-20-2008, 09:34 PM
raptor, dont let that stop you -- even if it's the same concept, people will certainly have different approaches toward making them chibi, or just creating them in 3d. It can be really neat to see different people's takes on the same concept.

Matias - nope, vert counts don't matter toward the budget. Just tris and the texture size.

Raptor5399
06-20-2008, 09:42 PM
I like Zargabaath as well and he isnt taken :D

Its between him and the guy at the very bottom of your post about the contest but I don't know his name.

Your right, they would be different enough.

YdoUwant2know
06-20-2008, 09:58 PM
With Final Fantasy as the topic, I cannot skip this one. Still working on the details but thought I would share what I had in mind. It just not a Final Fantasy game without these little guys. Just a very quick and ugly 2d that I am using to figure out armor. Should be fun.

you can do whatever you want for the base, but it should only be a stand/pedestal-that means no tricks to make your character feel more detailed than it is by dropping the knight's weapons or a mount into the base. You could certainly make it a mini environment if you wanted though.

does our unwrap get judged ? If not im just gonna PolyPaint in zbrush and use GUVtile for the unwrap. The texture map will look weird but it will be 100% seemless and textured. If i have to unwrap it, its not a problem, i just have other projects under the gun and this would speed this one up.

C&C Please?

What you've got so far looks pretty good. Just based on the mesh, it seems to meet the basic criteria. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any concept piece for this model. Again, based solely on the mesh, it looks a bit generic right now. Nothing wrong with that specifically. Just know that, ultimately, the uniqueness of the end product is going to depend more heavily on the quality and design of the texture.

As far as the mesh itself goes, it could probably use a little tweaking. Maybe some vertex welding here and there. I don't think you'll lose much in the way of quality. You also might want to check out the back of the model. Maybe it's just the render, but it looks like you've got a hole in the mesh that needs closing.

Pretty good so far though.

Thanks for the C&C, i will go through and clean up the mesh i didnt do that yet. Yea i agree it is a bit generic as far as features go compared to the standard judge (horns) ect. My judge is a crusader type which uses a mixture of plate and cloth i went with a extreme style helm thou. Instead of the traditional crusader box helm and added spikes to the top. My texture work is going to have to be on the money thou to compete with these more extreme ones thats for sure.

As for the hole in the mesh, i check everything with STLchecker and this has come clean of any errors. Its the shader/mental ray causing the normal to show at that angle. If i move the model the global light brings it back.

Again thanks for the help and ill keep this updated with progress.

I didnt know we needed a concept actually sketched out this one was just something i saw in my head when first glancing at the thread.

If we need a concept sheet i might be in a predicament then.

As far as the unwrap being judged, well, theres only one thing i have to say about that- DEFINITELY! :D An effective and efficient unwrap is a vital part of a game model. Every pixel should be accounted for and every uv space used to the fullest. GUV tiles is DEF. not the way to go here :)

Hi there

what a fun challenge. Must admit it's my first lowpoly character, but I like the feeling of it. Keeping the polycount low, is a nice task and always keeps you rethinking the topology.

so here is what I have got so far:

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/4601/progress01re9.jpg

comments and critics are more than welcome. And please answer me the question: Does the hypothetical engine support double sided Polys?

there's some gorgeous stuff going on here -- it looks like people are really hiting the theme perfectly!

aftermath - whether or not the UVs get judged depends on the person doing the voting. Snce everyone votes, each person might weigh that differently. Polypainting in zbrushmight give you seamless results, but te uvs will look pretty fugly--it might not be a bad idea to hand uv the mesh and then bring it back in to zbrush for painting.

butt_sahib & blankslatejoe: Thanks for the comments i thought about it last night and decided to just hand unwrap it. Part of me forgot that this site was primarily game oriented and in a game the uvw must fill the 0-1 space nicely. So im just going to finish unwraping it.

Butt_sahib: thanks for the comments.

Regarding polypainting straight away, it's definitely worth a try and with only diffuse map being used, you can even transfer the GUV later, as long as u keep in mind of UV distribution and texture distortion. I did some tests for an older mini comp, and it seems to work quite well. At least you got a nice texture to look at while you do yer new game friendly UV :D

@yung: holy cow that guy came out pretty cool! if anything, it could use a bit more contrast or perhaps a tiny amount of color variation to it, because in the final image the arms are somewhat obscured in front of his chest

@watereater: I like your texture and model, but the thing that sticks out to me is the wings. With real wings, there are primary, secondary, and tertiary feathers, and with your armor, it would likely be only primary feathers. I think if you made the feathers bigger and longer, it would look a lot better and evoke more power, as right now its kind of a nonsensical flow of smaller secondary-like feathers. Not that your guy has to do any flying, but if the wings had more reason, I think it would tie the whole piece together, as the rest of the armor looks pretty good.

I included a cheap paintover/ref for sort of what I mean.

Um... GarrettMinley the competition limit in 700 triangles. Not 700 polygons. I'm not sure how the settings in blender work, but if it is counting polygons that could mean 1400+ triangles.

bin- maybe some big shoulder pads to offset the side of the hands
Hito-great start, maybe a large head to chibi it more
seungeon-I'd make the hands bigger
marq4porsche-he looks like he will tip over
los-yep alphas are allowed
kirilot- i like the one on ther right
Aftermath- i would add some red bounce light to his helmet
-JL-something different, great proportions
dark_virus_2007-maybe larger hands
Japhir-a 100 tri weapon will work

man, each entry keeps upping the ante. good stuff :)

los - really digging your model. reminds me of the goblin knights from Labrynth

watereater - keeping those circles so they move when animated, but I cut some other polys and got a cloak and wpn out of it.

dark_virus_2007 - the arms should probably be longer. Right now they are incredibly short, even for something stylized

JL - cool looking mesh. look forward to see where it goes.

Started the texture at lunch today. just doing my preliminary drawing so I know what I'm doing down the road

Bin: Thanks. Just a small crit, the neck seems kind of off. it is very thin in the front view but very long in the side view. Maybe try to round it out a bit? nice start on the textures.

watereater: Thanks, I gave the larger hands a try tell me what you think... Your texture work is great, but if you have the texture space to share, try adding something to break up the symmetry.

Aftermath: The mask looks amazing but the textures on the back of the model seem to be lacking the same amount of detail. Otherwise, very nice.

nazeil: looking great, I really like the sword design you have.

just a small update, I played with the proportions a bit; enlarged the hands and shortened the arms. Also added the mask. the hope is I can get the faceless look of a judge on the outside but still have the moogle underneath. Sitting at 700 tri even right now. I hope to have the first pass of textures in the next couple of days.

C&C welcome.

I know this is really late but you could use an alpha mapped square with a single vert in the middle to give it a bit of volume (instead of a perfectly flat plane). Awesome job so far though, looking forward to more updates. Seeing all these great entries makes me want to do one too (and the fact that I'm in the middle of playing ff12 doesn't make it less appealing either :D)

Soft deadline means you can get it done on the 6th, 7th, or later, up until the voting closes, BUT to have a shot at getting enough votes to win, you'll need to get it done and up early.

nice work from everyone here is my final modelling of the character.

I am not happy with the swords though so I may alter them a bit more around the handles before I do the UVWS and texuring. I can also optimise them a bit i reckon and save a few extra polies.

Why not use an opacity map for the swords? Although it might eat up more of your budget than you'd like and if you want two unique swords it might be a bit of a pain so I guess it might not be as good of an idea as I'd hoped heh :)

dmightyone - awesome stuff!

urgaffel - good point man. I hadn't thought about that. :P

aftermath - There are some really nice details in your texture right now, like the layering on the shoulder pads. But overall the entire texture has a sort of "sameness" about it. Try having some stronger variation in values between the pieces and adding some trims that have color to break it up. keep up the good work :)

cunipshun - you should be able to squeeze out a weapon with your remaining tri's. Just use alpha planes. If you don't want to do that you can cut some more geometry out. The mid section of the foot could lose some tri's as well as your knee pad. Just hunt around for geometry that isn't adding anything significant to the silhouette.

paprika - thanks :)

funkdelic - nice clean mesh. It'll be cool to see how you approach this character.

HuntrLuc - Thanks! and that texture is looking hawt! I love the folds in the cloth. Keep up the good work!

los - nice man

YdoUwant2know - ty. The moogle knight is an awesome idea. Looking forward to seeing it textured.

Kessler: Just read ur post! sounds nice meal mate! I was also thinking doing some kinda hair but just put on a quick cape. Reckon it'd look good with just cape, just hair, or both? I may even have several iterations in the end to experiment with once I've got the basic textures down.

Great entries so far guys.

My custom character is evil. In dungeons & dragons Playing a evil character is more fun to play. The following example of this.

example:
Larry "The shop keeper tells you to leave his shop cause he hates halflings"
Ted "I leap over the counter slay him."
Larry "roll"
Ted "20, OH SNAP! I am the roll master! ! ! in your face shop keeper."

Hi, I'm fairly new on this board, but, I've decided to throw my hat into the ring. I'm liking the really low poly challenge. Here's what I've come up with. I don't play FF of any sort, so I'm making it up as I go along. It's a take on the boar faced helmet. And then I thought it'd be fun to give him a boar spear as his weapon. 388 tri polys so far and lots to add. Comments and Crits welcome.

inpw - you've got enough for a weapon -- how about a poleaxe or a halbred? Looks like that mesh would deserve an elongated weapon to go with the elongated/skinny look

Such awesome entries so far. It's crazy

This is turning out to be a really fun mini-comp. Anyways, here is my current WIP:
6663
It's going kinda slow cause I'm working on a few different characters at the same time, but it's real fun so far.

The amount of good work in this comp is plentious, and I haven't posted in a while... well.... here goes...

Using Judge Drace, being the only female judge, as a very loose reference to create my own judge hoping to capture the style.

Started with getting the proportions, then built the armor around, optimizing as I went. Going to put more ornaments on her helmet and a few other places and use any leftovers for a weapon.
