2d Minicomps are BACK!
Hello everyone, as announced in the latest 3d minicomp thread, new mod and elite artisan ThatDon will be taking over 3d Minicomps and I'll be giving 2d minis my full attention. Let's strive to make 2d minicomps as successful as the 3d ones have been!
http://30lives.com/gaorg/2dminicomp1.jpg
So, to kick things off, here's our theme:
Ultimate TreeHouse.
When I was a six or seven the one thing I wanted, other than an M1-Abrams, was a cool treehouse. When I was eight, my parents moved to a house that had one already built in the backyard and I realized with sad disappointment that a treehouse was, essentially, just wooden planks nailed to a tree.
Here's a list of what a proper treehouse needed, as far as the seven year old Joe was concerned:
Multiple rooms
Giant gerbil tunnels connecting everything
Rocket Launchers
an escape chute
a fridge
a ball pit
netting
an observatory
metal spikes
candy
I have no idea what it would look like--it'd probably be a mess, but at least it would be cooler than a few planks of wood nailed to a tree.
So, my fellow gameartisans, what would YOUR Ultimate Treehouse look like?
The objective: Design an Ultimate Treehouse. What does it look like? What kind of person would live there? Where is it located?
Need some inspiration? Try this incredible link! (http://zegarkus.com/2007/11/26/incredible-tree-houses-of-the-world/)
The Specs:
Submit one image, 1000x1000 pixels or less. This image should include a 'final treehouse image' (required), and any preliminary work (sketches) you wish to show (optional). The 'final treehouse image' part must be a full color representation of your treehouse.
Otherwise, anything goes! These minicomps are meant to be fun, quick, goofy, and just quick ways to spend an afternoon or two.
Please post all work-in-progress shots and questions in this thread!

i dig those tribal tree houses...
So me and my brother built a 2 story tree house.. It was a twisted mess of a structure.. it's a miracle we survived those days. So our dad thought it was so ugly that he told us to tear it down. We just cried and told him that we named it after him (which we actually did, Fort McScott)... and that spared the fort for another year or two.. haha.... good times.

Oh and...matte painting? or just paiting :p?
what's the difference? :o
blankslatejoe
06-23-2008, 04:46 PM
it could be either, the only strict requirement for this minicomp is that it must be full color. Most of the 2d mini comps will be full color, in terms of their requirements--and in the future we might expand to have more sketch/matte/ortho etc. concept minicomps
blankslatejoe
06-23-2008, 04:49 PM
oh, japhir, I'm assuming he meant a matte painting as in, a finished backdrop conveying the environment.
Normally matte paintings, as an industry term, refers to backdrops or overlay plates, or full scene paintings, as opposed to painting just the treehouse by itself, with no background or setting.
either works for this minicomp

Vorsp - Good start. Reminds me a a cool building structure that we have here in montreal. The only thing I find kind of strange is the base of the tree. It doesn't look like it can support the cement building.
Kalango - Someone must have liked the smurfs show when he was growing up:p Nice start.

Or we just need to chose the features that you said?
blankslatejoe
06-24-2008, 08:04 PM
you can do whatever you want! It doesn't need any of that. That was just my intro to the theme. Your treehouse could look like whatever you want--it can be fantasy, or realistic, or modern or ewok or whatever!

cool idea, really interested in what this is going to put out :D

06-25-2008, 12:54 PM
Well the idea on this one is when the tree was growing, there was some sort of rock fall, the trunk snapped off and a rock was left on the stump.
But the tree grew around it which is why its deformed, there were more rocks that fell which snapped subsequent branches, and the tree again grew around them, but ppl who desided to make a home of it, broke down the rocks an made their homes in the gaps :)
not sure how il top the tree, but yeah thats the idea

Those leaves are looking real nice, I think it's mainly the ground and where the grass meets the trunk. Maybe try to use different brushes for the grass, although it's working quite well on the hill on the right.
FredH
06-25-2008, 04:02 PM
RazzMattazz -> it looks good, but just one tree in the middle of nowhere looks kind of strange. Maybe some mountains in the background and a river near the tree? Also, it's could be cool if you made a nice entrance way on the base or something that explains how people get up to the houses. Otherwise, really good start man:thumb:
toma_li -> oh my, don't kill me for saying this... yours looks like a board game for some strange reason. I feel like rolling some dice and moving my figure up a certain number of stairs to reach each level. This could actually be a cool idea:D
Deviant-Ice -> I really like the center piece with the hole in it. Maybe you can work that place up a bit so it looks like an inside city or living space (small glowing windows here and there, and some protruding structures). As for outside the hole, maybe fluff it up with leaves more so we look at the hole more? I dunno. Looks really good regardless. It's shaping up well:)

06-25-2008, 05:04 PM
A kid I used to babysit had this incredible treehouse (well ground house that reached up to a loft in the backyard tree)
His father was an architect... it was pretty nuts.
Anyways, when I was maybe 13 and he was 7, I remember falling from the roof flat on my back on the lawn.... about 11 ft down.. thank god for soft earth!
....In other words, I'm in. I need to brush up on environments in any way I can!

Update on my tree house,
I've redrawn the trunk (ty FredH for the suggestion), I think it looks a lot more structually sound now, and I've also blocked in some colours.

Here's mine thus far...

The thing running around the tree is a roller coaster...I couldn't resist!
Although my original idea was a giant theme park tree, I'm now thinking of maybe scrapping the 'coaster idea and making the place more like a fortress instead, with a portcullis over the cave entrance and more buildings up in the tree.

looks like it comes up to me toma. I'm really diggint these funhouse ideas--rollercoasters and ferris wheels FTW!
vorspe-- nice way to incorporate mood and lighting into things.
whiteguardian--- looks like it could have a cool feel, but if youre going for toma lake, i'd try and use more of the vegetation from the references in your designs. Right now the treehouse looks based off of a plant that doesn't look like you'd find it growing in the references. Still, color might help that :)

vorsp - thats voming along great, reminds of Frank lloyd wright
I watched 10KBC and a shot of a stump in the foreground, made me remember that i had put this pic away to make into exactly what this comp is about, so what better time than now
trying to figure out where this stump came from, you dont have much option with trees so it was either huge forest or huge dead forest, guess which one i chose :rolleyes:m hmm maybe ice?

06-27-2008, 02:13 AM
That ref is some stump kilrot. For some reason my mind is wanting to see a person in place of that twig(?) that's bridging the two peaks (in the ref).

Nice design 3ex.
Toma_il: I think your image can use some color variation. Try using some blues and purples to help cool that picture up. Use it in shaded areas. Personally, I think you cluttered up the tree. It looks like every branch has a building, some of which doesn't look like it'll be able to support the weight (such as the upper left branch). The waterfall is confusing. Starting at the top, that first fall looks like it's the same distance with the top right branch and both of them look a good ways back from the ferris wheel. However, the waterfall is falling in front of the ferris wheel. You have some depth issue here. The amount of water that the bottom fall is chucking out is impossible too since it's significantly more than what it's source (that small fall) is supplying.
Just my 2 cents :)

Prischool -> With all the drooping vines, it looks very swamp like at the moment.. which is pretty cool. I really like how the tree is turning out, but the houses on it seem rather plain. Don't be afraid to go wild on their designs.
Kalango -> The pencil work on yours is shaping up really well. The swimming pool in the center was a great touch. I am not particularly fond of the windows though. Maybe some more decoration, like a window bench to put plants on, or adding some open wooden flap window thingies could add some extra love to that area. Aside from that, it's shaping up really well. Hope you will finish:)
Here is another update on mine. Still playing around with it. Switched it to night just for fun. Will keep adding details until the deadline..

This is my first attempt at... well anything really on this site.
My idea is the tree is in the centre of a reformed scrapyard, kinda like if Shelbyville managed to keep the lemon tree on The Simpsons.
Thoughts and suggestions definately welcome....

matticus - great idea - there's some perspective issues currently--and cylinders/discs are notoriously difficult to get correct perspective on. It might be worth the time to lay out a mock 3d scene with nothing but a few discs in the right places, and then take a screengrab and paint over that.
I usually have to either do that, or use an ellipses guide for any disc-shapes in my work--constructing them by eye/hand is really tricky!
fred - coool--im digging the lava! The arches are giving it a gothic look too--very neat
temmink - helipad! cool! don't be down on yourself about your drawing--we all are at different skill levels here. Start coloring it!
Kalango it's coming out awesome. I sure hope you can make the deadline

Whipped some drawings for the comp. Instead of having the house being built against the tree, I decided to go with a house that hangs of a branch, man made or otherwise. The house on the left has a lawn and mote :D

Vorsp_ angular and organic, thumbs-up
I started with the tree and am hoping to integrate the house. Maybe I should have started with the house. I will work on this more tomorrow.

Prischool - That looks pretty cool, really like the roots around the door

Carter - you could try spraypainting on a sheet of paper, photographing it, and then mixing it into your image. or just photographing some graffiti in your area or something ? To do it all digital, you could create some sort of drip brush in photoshop. it might not look as authentic, but it might work. :)

Looking good so far Kalango. Making a night time scene was a good idea. The glows will really look good on rouded objects:)
Updates? I'll probably squeeze mine out before the deadline. Have to finish something up that's kind of important.

The one I have used before is basically use a graffiti font and get that looking how you like it then use the smudge tool to pull a few drips down, sort of get the length first then bulge them out at the bottom. Make sure you do this after you distort the text to fit the surface, then follow the shapes on the surface with your drips. That seems to work best for me, otherwise troll deviantart looking for some brushes :inocent:
I know this isn't a drawing, but its still analogue...

wait wait! wtf we can just stick a photo in???
It does say:
"The 'final treehouse image' part must be a full color representation of your treehouse.
Otherwise, anything goes!"
So it doesn't prohibit it, but I still wouldn't but thats me. If someone was interested in making a compositing challenge, that would be pretty cool btw. I guess this is something that should be clarified in the next challenge.

Here my final progress and the objects explanation. The background is a photo. So this is a matte painting. Have a refrigerator for food/drink stocks, an observatorium, a fruit launcher, a relay bad, a gantole and a paralayangan for escaping. Actually in this month will be held Lake Toba Festival 2008 event, from 14-16 July 2008. YOu may check www.sumateratourism.com for further information

heh, the photo trick IS something I've seen companies do--personally, I never feel like it 'matches' a painted look, but the rules didn't prohibit it, so WG is in the clear. I think as the concept minis grow we'll have opportunities to try out different concepting approaches, each as their own mini possibly.
