Question: How well known comic book character? Are we talking about Marvel or DC Comics degree characters or allowed to consider lesser degree comic houses characters? (edit: For example Catwoman or Batman, everyone knows, somehow, and they're considered well known characters. But then for example Duck Avenger (papernik? or something like that) isn't from 'high holding' comic)

Yup, manga characters are allowed as long as they are action based.

About lesser degree comics, these are fine too, however, it would be nice if more then 25% of artists recognized the character you chose;)

Oh man! This is gonna be nice. Just out of curiosity can we do a character like Ghost Rider 2099? While technically a robot, he did have a human soul inside of it and he was more of a techno organic character. Any chance you can make an exception?

MM -> You know how when burnt bodies need dental records to ID the body? This is the same thing. The comic cover is there so that everyone can see the original piece before an artist goes in and performs a lobotomy:D If you can't find a cover, find a comic page or something.

IdanI -> There are no lighting or rendering restrictions for this challenge. Game Engines light set ups are pretty advanced these days, so there is no point disallowing Mental Ray or brazil or whatnot:)

DamageControl -> Sure, as long as he doesn't look purely robotic like a transformer, it should be fine.

Modeling Man -> Yeah, judges are human. We can't help but be a little influenced by what we are already familiar with, however, if you make an unknown ugly character into a super attractive model, I am sure you could beat batman if you tried;) I am just saying.. it's something to consider.

Voyeur -> Yup, you can.

BigJohn -> Iron man is fine:)

Mock not Squirrel Girl. :) She's also beaten Thanos, Deadpool, and other characters. IN continuity, might I add. She's inexplicably such a fun and funny character. So many weird ways to exploit her design & poses. Plus, a nice silhouette with that big poofy tail.

I wouldn't consider them robotic for many of the same reasons why I wouldn't consider Iron Man or Dr. Doom robots. They're still humans. They're not shape changing cars like Transformers or mechanical lions like Voltron. They're people with metallic appearances.

Now, if you said Red Ronin or maybe the Destroyer then I'd probably lump those into the robot category.

I think that everybody and his mother is going to be doing an Iron Man, Wolverine, or Hulk. Actually, I suspect that there might be TOO many Hulks. It's the absolute easiest design. It's a simple study in anatomy - albeit exaggerated. Not much more to Hulk than a body builder and some purple pants. At his most complex, he's either like a bouncer (Joe Fixit) or like a super juiced up Russel Crow (Gladiator/WWH Hulk).

That's why I like the more obscure/ornate characters and designs. Not just something you can model a nude body and simply slap on a spandex-y paint job of a costume. That's kind of a cheap way out, imho.

Which I guess means we may see some odd perspectives of the Hulk. That is my interpretation of the brief anyway.

I feel bad about my choice... because if you haven't read Ultimate X-Men past 70.... things get-a-crazy! They turned my favourite character into my other fave:

The action sequence in those issues (can't remember the numbers... it was a collected edition) and the dialog was incredible.

i think "robot" means a big fat robot who crushs the city, with a mad scientist inside. this would be more a "vehicle" not a character.
i think androids like vision (vision and the scarlett witch) or alita (battleangle alita) are ok, they have her own mind.

Hi, I'm new to this, so sorry if my question is dumb, I am wondering about the mapping/lighting limitations.

My character will have a lot of chrome, so some kind of cube-map to reflect is necessary, Will the cube-map I use for final presentation count as that 1024x1024 reflect map, or is the reflect map just a gray-scale mask of reflection affinity of the model (like a specular map)?

Now if I use a cube-map for reflections, can I use an HDRI reflection and just have image based lighting coming from the cube-map, instead of doing a multi lamp setup manually?

Plus there are some characters that even as I think of them could just look utterly awesome if done well.... Dr Strange, Chamber, Moon knight and Gambit.... Hmmm.... I shall have to give this some thought....

The 1024 map strikes me as a bit odd, and little, but since I've been dealing with 32x32 maps lately at work I'd say 1024x1024 is enough for anything.

I don't want to be original at all in this competition, and I won't even be able to finish due to crunch, and me moving in a couple of weeks, so I'll be picking The Batman. The Dark Knight. The Caped Crusader. Etc. Been wanting to do this one as a game model for months now, and this is a good opportunity as any.

Won't finish it, though, but I'm guessing as usual the prizes are cash equivs for anyone outside North America which will be eaten up by fees and a weak dollar, and the winners will be the "wrong" ones as usual. But, I'm still looking forward to butting heads with Mashru ;)

MM -> Too late to change this one. Due to crummy computers, some artists and students were having trouble with the high resolution during DW, so I thought I'd level the playing field a bit in this challenge. You could always save your high res version for portfolio use after the comp:D

For the comic cover, do we need to find a comic cover featuring our character just to show who we created? Or are we attempting to recreate an existing comic book cover with our model, and the original cover needs to be shown as reference?

hmmm, bad wording on my part:flag: You have 3 images to submit. Final Colored Concept (main image), modeling sheet, and sketches sheet. You should put the comic reference image into your last sketches sheet. Just stick it in the top left corner or something because you still need to show 6 sketches of your own on this sheet. i have an older flash comic, where flash punches yellow flash forawrd in time. at least i think its older... it was printed in the early 60's.
im not stupid enough to put it through a scanner. the light would damage it.
Don't worry about it. You'd have to scan it over, and over, and over again repeatedly for there to be any noticable damage to it. Especially with something as recent as a 60's comic. Maybe a photo from the 20's would need careful handling when scanning, but not a 60's print :p

Hey Fred, if this has already been asked I apologize, but in the brief it says submissions can be no larger than 800w x 900h pixels - that's great for sketches and the modeling sheet fits well within that, but I'm worried about my size format for the final 2d Illustration - should we cut down on the width for this in order to fit the standard size format for a comic book cover?

If I'm not clear I apologize, I'm just basically asking if we can use the whole 800 x 900 space for our final piece (keeping in mind that the sides would be cut off some), or do we need to keep the sizing to something like 700w x 900h? thanks!

Myth_ink: if your entering the competition for the 2d, you will want to post refrences and any other art you make, or use, that helps you get to the finish line, in your 2d WIP thread. Doesn't matter how you get the images in their, as long as they are visible in your thread. This means, you can attach, or use img tags, thats up to you. If your entering the 3d section, you would go about it the same way, the only difference is that your wip thread would be located in the 3d section.

ZDCoe: if I'm reading you right, the answer would be along the lines of, it's ok if your final images are smaller than 800w x 900h. They just can't be large than that. The submittion system wouldn't allow it.

yes, both characters have to be on the same sheet and for the pedestal, it would be best if it looked like a pedestal, but artists tend to create some crazy things for this regardless, so have fun. However, do not put anything your character can use or pick up on your floor/pedestal as this would be cheating since the pedestal has unlimited polies and texture sheets:)

so question, say i wanted to do a bullet coming out of a gun like the bullet on the wanted trailer with deadpools name on it inside my base. Its a bit of a grey area since it doesnt touch the character really its just there. If i cant its not a big deal was just an idea that came to mind for a piece of the base.

Am I allowed to put any artifacts on it (like broken bottle for instance) or does it just mean one single object with a hole bunch of polys?


2) Am I allowed to put my character in a pose where he is showing middle finger? (I mean it's Lobo - it wouldn't be the first picture in the world with him like that)

In my case " Nightcrawler " is in the airs, the ground of the piedestal is formed some smoke of its power of teleportation...

i just realized that I didn't put the comic book cover into my concept sheet ~_~ i grabbed the wrong file, is there any possible way i can fix this ? The image in the centre was for a graphic novel not comic ....

It said "congrats for yadda yadda" but I wonder if these are time-stamped EST and if my entry will be denied.

O well, creating a next-gen character model from start to finish in under 12 hours clears the sinuses! ;)
