BiG ToE has entered the competition!
Alright, so this model was from 5 years ago. Did it for a class project. Used box modeling, hated the style then, hate the style now. Going to try and fix this guy up.

BiG ToE

well, he is a big fan of the tee-bag. The dutch oven is also a personal favorite. But from my understanding, he has been working on perfecting the chilli rainbow.

Not to be a problem here but isn't this suppose to be reworking an existing character from before 1996 that isn't your own like Mario or Lara Croft? I'm not sure this is old enough or fits...again, not be a pain but just trying to make sure we are good before we good into this too far...am I reading this incoorectly?
BiG ToE
06-17-2007, 12:24 AM
your reading it incorrectly, the part in the breif that says 1996 and older is for te concept guys.
The 3d guy get to remake anything they made in the past that isn't from like lets say a year ago.

He is very... you know... GaY like. Expressive image. I think that explaining it in entry name was not necessary. :D Waiting for updates, this is gonna be interesting.
I really don't want to know what a chilli rainbow is, which sounds rather graphic.
I do want to know what style you use that's not box modeling. I only know box modeling and edge extrusion.

Nice start so far Big Toe, looks like you charged out the gate running with this one. It would be cool to give him a bigger gut and hangover; also some love handles would add some nice form as well. The extra volume would come in handy especially if you plan on doing any sculpting, it give you more to play with. Out side of that I don't have much else to crit and I'm looking forward to seeing what direction you going in. Keep em coming!:)
Marcus
BiG ToE
06-19-2007, 10:29 PM
Thanks Marcus, I plan on making the gut bigger, to kinda match the original. I also want him look somewhat like an ex body builder. He needs to be strong enough to hold down his experiments. Think I'll go look at Mr Kite's Mr Beef to get some ideas on how to handle it.

looks like a good start. keep it up!
He looks huge, as in height that is. I'd hate to see his shadow eclipse me from behind :flag:
He could use a bit more width as previously stated. Good progress.

I like that, "from behind", I'm going to try and use that in my final images.

Keep in mind you can do the spandex bikini in the texture with a normal map since it’s not a very thick material, also is it just the camera angle or is his biceps connected to his armpits and ribcage. Maybe with a three quarter view it may make sense topology wise. Your blazing through this man, keep em coming!
Marcus

Hrmph, kinda makes me wonder what I've been spending my time on. Kinda would of liked to see the proportions as in the concept b/c there was a pretty good amount of character in them.
BiG ToE
06-23-2007, 12:45 PM
yoyomon: well I'm running of the original concept, but changing things as I get to them. I have this nasty image in mind that keeps getting worse as I think about it. My next update should show what I mean.
Marcus: his bicep kinda sorta is connected at the rib cage. I'll play with it, but I'm hoping after I rigg it, it wont be too big of a problem. As for the thong in the original, I'm going in a different direction. He will be wearing an apron, which will be removable. It helps keep the juices off him.
I need to round out the fingers/thumb and start work on the legs. Not sure if I want big think legs to match the arms, or go with a skinny leg to play with proportions?
BiG ToE
06-26-2007, 07:22 PM
ok, so I took these screengrabs a few days ago, since I have fixed a few leg problems, and I'm still on the fence about the hands.
Yoyomon also gave a great idea about the probe. Had something to do with ductape, I'll play with it some.

not sure which legs I want to go with, the high heels help push the name of the guy, but then some males wear them and are straight as pencils. So......
shadowbreeze
06-26-2007, 07:41 PM
oh man i can't believe you went their( middle leg), but now i think about it yes i can:eek:
as for the legs i prefer the stocky shorter ones, maybe if you made the high heel legs a bit more stocky, i think that would look cool.:D
Chasarsis
06-26-2007, 08:34 PM
I kinda prefer the stockier legs too. The polygon flow around the knee cap and feet look like they could be cleaned up some, though
BiG ToE
06-26-2007, 09:39 PM
I'll play with the idea of a short stock leg with high heel.

well, I'm about 74 tris over my limit, so unless I can find some tris hiding in his backside, I may have to remove the probe, the vasaline and the baby oil.
anyway, went with a combo of everyone's ideas. Used the high heel, but put them on a shorter, stumpier leg. I also did the buldge of the feet in the shoe. Not sure if the budge should be bigger.

well, after removeing the probe's lubrication dispencer sack and lossing a few polies in the crack, back and hands, I'm back in buisness. Still will play with the feet though, and the face has a bit more tries calling my name, mocking me with yo mamma jokes. So they gotta go.

I am absent for just a little while, and this happens. This is terrible, truly terrible:lol: At least he doesn't have any straps all over him. If he did, then I would have to fly over there and hit you:rolleyes: Couldn't you just give him one of those very tight underwears or gstring thingies with lots and lots of padding in the front end? Everyone would get the point and it would not disrupt your characters physical balance:p
Anyways, it's up to you. I am sure whatever creature with whatever body parts you decide to put on him in the end, will look good. Good luck.
Oh This is hilarious.... very subtle... haha....
Great great model. I'm sure the textures will make the probe look more 'probe like'.

I would cut tris in the DONG area... that's taking up about 74 tris isn't it? Yeah, it'd be beneficial if the tris were cut in the DONG area... Not only will it optimize your model but it will also aleviate the creepy feeling that gives everybody the shivers by looking at it... lol. I'm just messin' with ya BigDong... er... BigToe...

well, good news is, I got him unrwapped. Bad news is, there is some stretching in the chest area that I just can't get rid of. Also, everytime I try bringing the mesh into Mudbox, my new BOXX system starts screwing up. I'm going to call those guys and give them an ear full. Then I'll try again.
BiG ToE
07-13-2007, 09:47 AM
so mudbox's normal map setup is no good. And right now, the mesh I'm playing with is over 1 million pollies, so I dout I'll be able to import it into Max like I did my last competition model.
In the end, I might hae to scrape the normal map, altogether.

07-13-2007, 12:42 PM
what are you talking bout? just use xnormal or another thirdparty programm for baking normals or am I missing the point?

well I guess the question is, can I import a Mesh of that size into xnormal. And I'll just have to go find out.
Marcus Dublin
07-13-2007, 03:29 PM
What's the specs on your machine dude, I recall you having this problem with your last entry. Even with my old setup I was able to import a 3 million poly file into max without much hassle. Anyway Xnormal seems like the way to go and it's pretty robust, good luck!:)
Marcus
BiG ToE
07-13-2007, 03:33 PM
the problem is mudbox not letting me have my way with it.
Last time I had to import the mesh back into max to create the normal, so I may have to do that again.
I'm trying to install xnormal right now, may need to install polly boost too.
The specs on the computer I'm trying to do it on are basic, 1 gig of ram, a 256 mb video card and running at 3.3 ghz
edit:
ok, so xnormal didn't want to install, but, Max did import the mesh without problem.

So is this machine somehow Hogwards flavoured or what?! 3 million obj into max?! I already have problems with 500 k and below. and my turtle machine is a amd64 3500 with 2 gigs.
As for me signs are also on Xnormal because those lazy girls at Pixologic didnt manage to include ZMapper into ZB3. And for God's sake there souls will burn in hell for that!
So good luck bringing your normals out. I always hate it when I'm stuck on technical stuff!

I had a few problems importing my mesh into max too. At first, it didn't look like it was working because max would just sit there and do nothing, so one day, I just left it on and went to bed. When I woke up, the mesh got imported successfully. It just took a few hours....:s

ok, so here is what I had been working on. Some parts I like, most parts, I do not. So I'll start it over. Wont take long, I know what I want this time. And it's just to push a few areas, nothing big. That and I need to finish up two other models in the next week before I head out on vacation.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g129/DJBiGToE/052-1.jpg
Also, was finally able to install xnormal, but it didn't work out too well. So tried the Max import and success, got me a normal map. Then, I decided to redo the high poly, so it doesn't even matter.

Well for starters you really need to tone down the base color, it's waaaaaay:ack: to hot. Alien or not he looks like he's on fire, if your going for green then start out with a cool green base and then work your way up to some warmer color blending schemes. On top of that figure out what type of skin you want to go with, hard and scale skinned, slimy, smooth, etc, this will go a long way in helping the textures. For me personally I'd go with a combination of hard and bumpy with some smooth parts on the soft areas. Google African frogs and you'll see what I mean. Last but not least it'll be cool to have a secondary color as well, maybe tan, orange, or in his case pink:D! Good luck with the skinning man!:)

good looking out Marcus. At first I was thinking of going the way of the predetor's skin, from the movies, right when he takes his mask off, but after doing a quick search for little froggies, I'm liking the ideas that I'm getting from the images. These stood out the most to me:

Marcus Dublin
07-22-2007, 02:39 PM
Well for starters it's a big improvement over what you began with but it's still way to hot, your green value is approaching 255 which is not natural. The bit of pink and blue is a nice touch and should be pushed even further, also I'd suggest muting the green in some areas with another offset color. The chest and stomach region is a great place to really play with adding a secondary color, maybe a cream white or tan. Anyway I look forward to seeing what direction you take and how this unique creation turns out.:)

I think I know what the problem is Marcus. I'm color blind. Have been since the day I was born. Turns out all my art has bright colors so that it is easier for me to see/tell a difference.
On a side note, I played with what I had and added some pimples/warts. But I'm not liking them. Need to change the colors, that, and add a few more details here and there, then I will be calling it quits. Going out of town Wednesday night, so I need this done in the next two days.

It looks like you forgot to rotate his head because it's still in line with his body (sort of like a default posed head). The other poses are great and lighting turned out very well too.
