Hey Guys I thought it would be fun and interesting to see what peoples top 50 favorite films are! I was inspired to post this after hanging out with some friends at the bar tonight talking about the very same thing. Mind you this is not a list of the best films of all time, so you shouldn’t feel bad if you don’t have the Godfather on your list! This list should be comprised of films that you absolutely fell in love with for one reason or another and couldn't do without. For instance I think Schindler's list is one of the best films ever made but I’ve only seen it a handful of times and will probably only do so throughout my adult life. On the flip side I have Transformers “the animated film” on my favorites list since I’ve seen it over 30 times and will probably see it another 30 throughout my adult life.
It’s not that I think Transformers the Animated film is better than Schindler's list but for various reasons I favor watching it over and over again! Of course if I were to make a top 50 greatest films list then Schindler's would be on it. Anyways you may think 50 is too big of a list but you’d be surprised how quickly it fills up, so make sure to put some thought into it and choose wisely! By the way I came up with my list based on the number of viewings, when I first saw the films, how these films make me feel to this day, and how many more times I’ll watch them with tiring of them! That being said enjoy and have fun with it!:)
Now on to my list:
1. Star Wars / my introduction into all of geekdom!
2. Aliens / James Carmon’s best film to date 20 years running!
3. Brave heart / An epic journey
4. Heat / You gotta love the shoot out scene, instant classic!
5. Terminator 2 / Arnold at his best
6. Transformers “the animated film” / pure magic, and that soundtrack rules!
7. Seven / I’ve seen it over 15 times and it’s still unnerving!
8. Legend / Instant classic, the Tangerine dream score is still the best version.
9. The Matrix / It started a hole new movement in live action films
10. Scarface / Bloody awesome
11. Gladiator / Ridley Scott’s second best effort to date
12. Indiana Jones "Raiders of the last ark" / best adventure film ever made.
13. Conan the barbarian / “See to the lamentation of the women”
14. Pulp Fiction / Tarantino at his best!
15. Lord of the rings return of the king
16. The Crow / A dark Greek tragedy
17. Akira / it’s hard to believe it was all animated by hand!

19. Top Gun / "I feel the need the need for speed"
20. Robo Cop / How awesome is that suit after all these years.
21. The Sixth Sense / I still can’t believe the ending!
22. Under World Evolution / Best vampire/werewolf movie ever made
23. Batman Begins / The way batman should be done
24. Shaolin Master Killer / 36 chambers of joy!
25. Five Deadly Venoms / I wanted to learn the lizard style
26. The Usual Suspects / Gotta love the build up to the end.

45. LOTR the Two Towers / Helms deep, nuff said.
46. Silence of the Lambs

Back to the Future - Tighly crafted from top to bottom. Still holds up well after nearly 25 years. I can watch this over and over.
Nightmare on Elm Street, A - Remember when horror movies were about actual fear and not just cheap scare tactics? I remember the first time I saw this movie, before Freddy Kreuger became a household name. This movie scared the hell out of me. For a horror movie, the story is obscenely well written. Heather Langenkamp's Nancy Thompson defies the whole helpless female cliche. Plus, it's the movie that introduced Johnny Depp. LOTR fans can thank good ole Freddy now. :)
Shawshank Redemption - Nearly perfect
Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, A - Not as innovative as the original, but it was a sequel that managed to better it in many ways. Bigger effects. Bigger threats. Fan favorite characters actually die. Actual characterization and personality for the villain, practically unheard of for a horror movie killer at the time. Forget that Freddy's Revenge even existed.
Back to the Future 2 - This movie is often maligned as being overly commercial and campy. Well, yeah. It was. That was the 80s. However, it played so well on the idea of history repeating itself.
Sixteen Candles - Reportedly written over the course of a weekend, this movie proves one thing. Nobody in the 1980s had a handle of writing teens than John Hughes. Sharp witted. As much a chick flick as it is a movie about guy geeks.
Breakfast Club, The - The slang is clearly dated and the ending is a bit too tidy. However, this is one of those movies that has universal appeal. Jock. Nerd. Spoiled Princess. Weirdo. Bully. It's a teen movie that doesn't rely on sex or toilet humor.
Lost Boys, The - Joel Schummacher proves that he CAN direct, as long as it's not Batman. Totally 80's, but still one of the best takes on vampires. Nothing innovative, but certainly much hipper than the "I vant to zuck your blud." of the old Legosi classic.
Dogma - Kevin Smith will have you laughing and thinking at the same time. Definitely a bit deeper than his usual films.
The Princess Bride - Classic.
Star Wars Episode 4 - Stands on its own as a perfect sci-fi fairy tale. Naturally, the prequels tacked on senseless backstory and retconning, but we can forget that, right? :)
Star Wars Episode 5 - Noo!!!!!! Best use of a cheesy scream.
Die Hard - McClane is an average schmuck with a crappy home life. He gets shot at, nearly blown up, skewered with glass, and has to take down a building full of terrorists by himself. BEST X-MAS MOVIE EVER!!! :)
A Christmas Story - Okay. So maybe you like your Christmas movies a bit less bloody. Good luck with that. With a Red Ryder BB Gun, you'll shoot your eye out! This movie's a must in my house during the holidays.
Halloween - Classic horror movie with a surprisingly low body count. When killings do happen, they kinda make you feel unsettled. Listening to the gurgling sounds as Michael strangles Annie is still more creepy than anything in the remake.
Unbreakable - M. Knight Shamalamadingdong sucks as writer and a director. I've hated just about all of his movies... except for this one. You see the ending coming a mile away, but you can't help but enjoy the origin of a character who's one part Batman, one part Daredevil, and one part old Mr. Incredible.
Incredibles, The - Thanks in large part to Brad Bird's excellent direction and deeply human storytelling, this is the only animated film to make my list. The Incredibles is fresh and exciting, as both a family comedy and an action movie. I like Monsters, Inc. too, but this one is tops for me.
Terminator 2 - Arnie at his best, action-wise. Unless you watch the director's cut, this movie almost never stops for a breather. Amazing action work.
Matrix, The - This movie blew my mind. It'll make me think twice before I ever bad mouth my PC. This did for action movies what as Star Wars did for sci-fi. It raised the bar and is still noteworthy a decade later.
Goonies - How can you NOT love this movie as a kid? Adventure. Comedy. Treasure. Monsters. As a kid, I practically wanted to BE a Goonie. :)
True Lies - If Terminator 2 made sweet, sweet love to a spy comedy then True Lies would bit their love child. Again, a bit long for what it is, but it's still one of Arnold's best ever.
Hot Fuzz - This movie simultaneously mocks buddy comedy action movies while actually becoming one. Edgar Wright is such an underrated talent.
Swimming with Sharks - Think your boss is evil incarnate? Meet Kevin Spacey. He's such a pr**k and you love every moment he's on screen. He's a back stabbing Hollywood exec who has nothing better to do with his time than abuse his assistant. The under appreciated Frank Whaley is great as the abused assistant and even better as the vengeful captor.
Near Dark - Best vampire movie that never actually uses the word or bears a single fang. What Lost Boys did for punks, Near Dark does for white trash.
Reservoir Dogs - Tarantino loves talking head story telling. No doubt about it. People spend more time in this heist flick gabbing than actually robbing. From the discussion of the meaning behind "Like a Virgin" to the argument over color coded code names, the dialog is sharp. Pulp fiction came as close, especially with Sam Jackson's rant, but Tim Roth as an undercover cop is just too rich.
The Fly (1986) - An awesome and somewhat unnerving remake. Remember when Geena Davis was hot? Me neither. Still, she can act nice and scared in this movie. Guess that counts for something. :p
Beetlejuice - Hey! It's Geena Davis again! Still not hot, but actually pretty funny. Well cast along side Baldwin and Keaton in a Tim Burton classic. Still his best, imho.
Edward Scissorhands - Burton strikes back! Now with 100% extra Depp.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High - Hey, bud. Let's party. Dated in nearly every way, but pretty darn insightful.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Student VS Principal. Another John Hughes teen classic.
Predator 2 - I actually liked this better than the first. Maybe it was the urban setting. Whatever, I thought that this was the height of anything predator related.
Last Dragon, The - Blaxploitation + Kung Fu + 80's music = Surprisingly goofy fun. Not an Oscar winner, but a very guilty pleasure.
Back to the Future 3 - As great as the other 2, but the formula is a bit tired at this point. Still a classic that completes a great trilogy.
Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master, A - If Freddy's Revenge never existed, this would be the perfect ending to the perfect horror trilogy. It wraps everything up well. Too bad that they kept making more, although 7 (New Nightmare) was great.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - Foul mouthed chuckleheads. Kevin Smith doesn't do anything inventive or innovative here. He just takes fan favorite characters and has a field day. Really funny celeb cameos that don't detract from overall enjoyment.
Robocop - Best cyborg movie ever.
Weird Science - Using computers to make hot chicks? Isn't that what CG artists do? :)
Gremlins - Awful effects at times. The movie can't always decide if it's a horror or a comedy, but it's another weird and wacky X-Mas movie that I can't get enough of.
Craft, The - Lost Boys, meet witches? Oh, yeah. Now you're all girls.
Charlie's Angels - Such a stupid, stupid movie? Why must I watch it every time?
Police Story - Jackie Chan's best action movie. Still hasn't been topped.
Fifth Element, The - Odd mix of comedy and sci-fi action that doesn't always work. Oldman and Tucker need to be strangled... slowly. Still, Willis and Jovovich make for an enjoyable action duo.
Revenge of the Nerds - Booger.
X2: X-Men United - So hard to make a team oriented movie. This one did it... and bettered the original
X-Men - Different than the comic, but made great changes.
Terminator - Almost as great as T2. Just less action
Masters of the Universe - I make no excuses. I like this movie. Suck it!
My Best Friend is a Vampire - Ditto
Groundhog Day - Bing!
Scrooged - Carol Kane as X-Mas present. Awesome.
BONUS 5
Elivra Mistress of the Dark - Must not stare at rack. Must not stare. :D Funny B-movie that makes fun of B-movies.
Short Circuit - Screw you Wall-E. Johnny 5's my bot of choice. :)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Bats!!!
Labyrinth - Must not stare at Bowie's leotard. Must not stare. ARGH!!! I'm blind!!!
X-Men the Last Stand - Pretty shallow, story-wise, but delivers every bit of action that's been promised since the 1st movie.

1. Legends of the Fall – This movie to me is what life is all about.
2. Snatch – Pitt as Mickey the one shot pikey. Awesome.
3. Back to the Future – I've seen this movie like a thousand times and it's still good. If after all this time I can only find one thing about it that doesn't make sense “science-wise”, then it's a good movie.
4. American Psycho – Two scenes here actually filtered through into my real life. The one where he has sex while looking in the mirror, and the one with him breaking up with Reese Witherspoon (I have to go. But where? I have to return some video tapes). I haven't had the guts to do the mirror thing yet, but it's coming. The video-tapes line I've actually been using ever since I saw it.
5. The Corpse Bride – In my opinion the best Stop Motion film ever.
6. The Iron Giant – Same as above, just best 2d animation.
7. The Incredibles – best 3D.
8. Nightmare Before Christmas – Before there was the corpse bride, this was it.
9. Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels – Same goodness as snatch, only this time it's vinnie jones who kicks ass instead of Brad Pitt.
10. Casino Royale – I know I know... I'm sorry, but in my opinion the best Bond film yet.
11. Memento – It just expanded my mind as to what's possible in story telling.
12. Fight Club – Did I mention I was a Brad Pitt fan? I didn't realize just how much until making this list.
13. The Addams Family – Both of them rocked. I always thought the first one was better than the second, but I just got both on DVD and nope, second is better. Sharper humor.
14. Interview with the Vampire – Before I saw this movie I thought vampires were gay. Now I want to be one. The rest of the vampire movies I saw were all pretty gay. Except Shadow of the Vampire, but that's more like a spoof. Brad Pitt again....
15. The Fifth Element – I've seen it so many times, and each time I notice something new. Last time I saw it I noticed that Korben doesn't even meet Zorg ever....
16. Leon – It's basically the 5th element, only not in the future.
17. Beetlejuice – My introduction to Tim Burton.
18. Terminator2 – This is a movie that was so good, that it made me vote for someone... that's rare.
19. Star Wars – Can't really pick one. They're all kinda just 1 big movie, just excluding the one with jar-jar.
20. Pulp Fiction – It's just good, and funny too.
21. Groundhog Day – Reminds me of Day of the Tentacle.
22. Death to Smoochy – Just so funny. Robin Williams + Edward Norton = Win.
23. Pirates of the Caribbean – The second one was awesome. I used to think there wasn't enough material in the pirate-universe to make a story worth telling. But after seeing the whole world they came up with, with Davy Jones, and the land of the dead, I was completely amazed.
24. Office Space – Has to be the movie me and my friends most quote.
25. Lord of the Rings – The entire trilogy. It's pretty much one movie. If it wasn't as long as it is, I could probably watch it every week. As it stands, I watch it every once in a while and it didn't get old yet.
26. The Matrix – It's just awesome.
27. Underworld – Both of them were pretty good, but the second one just kicked so much ass. Vampires and Werewolves are way underdone I think. We need an MMO.
28. Batman Begins – Christian Bale again on my list. He's just awesome, and so is this movie, and hopefully the next one coming out next week.
29. 3:10 to Yuma – Such a great movie, with such great actors. I know it's a remake, but I think it's much better than the old B&W one.
30. The Usual Suspects – I seriously thought he was retarded all along.
31. Crybaby – Whatever. I like it.
32. Who Framed Rogger Rabbit – Always fun to watch this. Especially the shorts. So much style.
33. A Streetcar Named Desire - “STELLLLLAAAAAAAAAA!!!1!!!”
34. Double Indemnity – My introduction to film noir, and also the best one in my opinion.
35. Dead on Arrival – Another great noir.
36. Strangers on a Train – I got this DVD set with all these Noir movies, and they all rocked.
37. Casablanca – Not sure if this is considered Noir, but I like it too.
38. Chicago – Awesome style. Good music (in my opinion).
39. Gangs of New York – Daniel Day Lewis makes me want to lose an eye just to be like him. That's a sign of good acting.
40. Ghostbusters – Both of them. Great movies.
41. Payback – Pretty much the only Mel Gibson movie I like.
42. Braveheart – Ok, this one too. But that's it!
43. Lethal Weapon – Crap, forgot about that one.
44. Sin City – To be honest, not that good. But the Marv sequence is always awesome.
45. Layer Cake – Decent enough for those crime movies. First time I've seen Daniel Craig, now one of my favorite actors.
46. L.A. Confidential – That reverse Russian Roulette thing was so damn cool.
47. Eastern Promises – Viggo. Watts. Russian Mob. Awesome.
48. Old School – When I first came to the US, that movie made no sense to me at all. But I watched it again a few years later when my English improved, and it made me laugh sooooooo hard.
49. Wedding Crashers – Another good one. If it's on TV and I wasn't planning on watching anything else, I'll put it on.
50. The Royal Tenenbaums – Strange movie. But it's funny, and Gwyneth Paltrow is smoking in it.

I guess I had more to drink last night than I care to remember, as I’m ashamed not to have the Goonies, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and The Lost Boys on my list :inocent: eek! By the way you guys posted a few films that I need to add to my net flicks list, like:
3:10 Yuma
Death to Smoochy
Dead on arrival
Eastern Promises
The Royal Tenenbaums
Keep em coming!

Hmmm, a top 50 list... That's a lot of flicks. And to number them, that's a lot to ask for. I watch so many movies, and enjoy a lot of them, so making a numbered top 50 is quite a task. However, it is sunday (my least favorite day of the week), so maybe I can take the time to write out a list. It will take thought, time and concentration. I'll be back, with a list, whether that list makes sense or not. ;)

Yeah. I should have added Ghostbusters, Lilo & Stitch, Heathers, Mad Max, The Italian Job, Final Fantasy Advent Children, Appleseed Ex Machina, Final Destination 1, Ed Wood, Firestarter, and probably enough movies to fill a Top 150. I could've added "Gone Baby Gone" for Amy Ryan's amazing performance alone. Those were just the ones that came to mind first. I've got like 1,000+ DVDs here. To narrow down a real top 50 from that list would take me forever. :)
What about your 20 LEAST favorite too? Not just talking about what movies you think are the worst. I'm talking about movies that you just can't bear to watch.
My LEAST favorite (in no particular order):
Mary Poppins - I know that it's supposed to be good. However, ever since I was 7 years old, this movie has bored me to tears.
Cars - I liked it better the first time, when it was called Doc Hollywood. Same movie only with cars. Shameless, Pixar. Shameless.
Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, A - My least favorite horror movie of all time. Love saves the day? Freddy as a body snatcher? Ugh!!!
King Kong (any version) - Really, apart from the last couple of minutes of cool ape rage in NYC, is there any reason to watch this?
The Shining - Good Stanley Kubrick movie. Really bad Stephen King adaptation. Advantage... King. Always.
Rush Hour - Cliche buddy cop movie with action scenes that are good for US audiences, but tend to represent Chan's worst effort.
Schindler's List - I get the significance. That's fine. It's a great tear jerker. Still, to me, this was the movie that killed off the fluffy Spielberg. I'll never forgive it for that.
Philadelphia - Decent court drama that marks the end of Tom Hanks' comedic career. So much for Money Pit 2. :)
Star Wars Episode 1 - Beautiful effects. Loved how they digitally replaced the actors with mannequins and the story with styrofoam.
Batman Begins - I don't get it. The production values are higher and there are no bat nipples, but the action is mediocrely choreographed and shot. Just because it isn't a bad Batman movie doesn't make it a great one.
Finding Nemo - Yeah. It's the second Pixar movie to make the list. I can't stand this movie. Maybe it's the tired Pixar family friendly formula. Maybe it's the deep sea snore story. Quality visuals aside, I'd sooner watch a toilet flush for 2 hours.
Saw 2+ - The first one was original and great fun. Every single one beyond that is not even horror per se. It's just mindless torture porn. Same with Hostel and just about any "horror" movie from the past 10 years.
Bambi II - Sorry Bambi, but you're my example. Here, Disney shows us how to destroy a legacy and a legend with shameless direct-to-DVD sequels of true classics. Some direct-to-DVD movies can be good, but pretty much every one from Disney has been a monstrosity.
Spider-Man 3 - Great way to destroy a franchise. I mean, X-Men 3 wasn't perfect, but at least it tried. Spider-Emo? Dancing? Retconning the origin? Dropped plot threads? Bad guys who pose no real threat? This movie has it all and has nothing at the same time.
Superman II - Best of the series, but still a dumb movie. Yeah, Superman gets to actually hit somebody. Still, the cheese factor is high here. Clark menaces people at a truck stop. He takes away Lois' memory with a kiss. He throws his chest insignia to ensare enemies. Zod, a fellow Kryptonian, has telekinesis? Dumb even for 1980.
Boogeyman (2005) - The first 5 or 10 minutes of this movie are actually pretty good. Then it kinda turns into a humorless remake of the 1986 comedy House.
Speed Racer - How could this NOT make my worst list? Had it not been for the fact that I had paid $10, I would have walked out after 5 minutes. This movie gives crap a bad name. As if the Wachowski name wasn't warning enough, this movie is an adaptation of a 41 year old cartoon that the 15 year old target audience is far too young to have seen in anything but repeats on cable.
Underworld Evolution - I saw this movie in the theaters twice. The first time, I had a hard time staying awake. I figured that I was just too tired that day. I went back the following weekend, all awake and refreshed. I totally fell asleep this time. The movie put me into a coma. When I finally saw it in full on DVD, I realized that Kate Beckinsale was hot, but that couldn't save a movie that was vastly inferior to the original.
The Mask - I don't really hate this movie, but I no longer like it as much as I once did. The movie depended a whole lot on CG, which is now extremely dated. The comedic stylings of Jim Carrey seemed original at the time, but you can clearly see his formula in hindsight. The story is meh, at best. The visual comedy tries to parrot Tex Avery or Chuck Jones, but it falls short by just a hair. Maybe the only good thing about this movie is Cameron Diaz, whose Cuban curves and original nose are sadly seen here for the last time.
The Sixth Sense - Maybe it's because I've seen a lot of movies, but I totally guessed the ending after the first 5 minutes. Really, what writer leaves such a tense shooting scene unresolved? The fact that you never actually saw Bruce Willis survive or die in the opening was such a dead giveaway. It's one thing to foreshadow. It's something else to entirely hand the surprise ending to the audience on a plate 2 hours too early. It made the rest of the movie so much less exciting for me. That one poorly crafted scene still kills the replay value of this movie for me to this day.
I know that it feels like I'm being harsh on Pixar here. I am. I wholeheartedly believe that Pixar is overrated. *dodges gunfire* Their movies are always technically amazing. It's their storytelling that falls short for me. I just feel like I'm seeing the same sort of family friendly formula over and over from them. Plus, their messages get more heavy handed each time. Most of their stories and characterization, imho, don't stand up well against live action movies. I sincerely doubt that any Pixar character can be named among the top 50 movie characters of all time. For a company that's so highly regarded for their film making prowess... For a company with such highly ranked films on IMDB.... that's an interesting thing.
Pixar is awesome with all things CG. It's their writing I question.
I was tempted to add WALL-E to this "least favorite" list, since it was exceedingly blunt, vastly oversimplified, and WALL-E (as a character) had a weak character arc and shallow level of personal growth. Then, I remembered how entertaining most of the supporting cast was. I'd watch that movie for MO alone. :)

Wow, i'm with ya Marcus. I forgot so many, especially American Psycho!!! no way. I've seen that movie about 10 times and read the first quarter of the book. (i know, lazy).
Theres some good reminders up there.
I will have to revise the list! Its tough cause i have some movies i watch many many times over, but most i usually just watch once. i was staying away from new movies like Wedding Crashers, V for Vendetta, and Little Miss Sunshine which are awesome but i just saw it once in theater. though i'll probably see it again some day i'm sure.

Alright, I got mine. It was hard considering, it couldn't just be movies I liked, but movies I will watch again and again. That threw me off a couple of times, but I finally got a list I'm pretty happy with. I avoided movies like and of the star wars, as I will not be seeing those again. Seen them too many times, and I just can't take another viewing. There's a few others I avoided, as I feel I might be committing "nostalgia-cide" by watching them.
Anyway, here's my list in reverse order from the rest, as I like the build up that way better:
50. The Monster Squad (I've always loved monster's, and this movie is one of the biggest reason's why. That, and all those old Iron Maiden album covers)
49. Unbreakable (Seen it a bunch, and still love it)
48. What Dreams May Come (I despise all love stories, but this one had
something the others don't. Imagination.)
47. Die Hard (I can almost always find time to watch the original.
46. Snatch (Funny, and entertaining. Those Brits have the market cornered, on cursing.)
45. Pulp Fiction (I hate to admit it, as it's trendy as all hell, but I can't turn it off if it's on. And if I see part of it cut, then I gotta see the whole thing, uncut)
44. The Ninth Gate (Although the story could have gone farther, I still love the atmosphere, and ideas in this one)
43. The Grudge (remake or original, awesome flick)
42. The Grudge 2 (Again, remake or original...)
41. The Bourne Identity (Who'd have thought, Matt Damon a bad ass?)
40. Nightwatch (crazy, fun, off the wall, great stuff)
39. Akira (crazy, fun, off the wall, great stuff)
38. Ghost Watch (Awesome setup, had no idea what could happen, and the real life effect it had on people was something I wish I knew about when it was aired. Let's see any US news anchor do what the folks at the BBC did with this)
37. The Machine Girl (The trailer said it all. "Ninja's! Tempura! Drill bra's! Need I say more?)
36. High Tension (I know, the end was a cheat, but I still love that movie. Having Muse for part of the chase scene was so out of left field, yet fit so perfectly)
35. Prince of Darkness (The tension level was extremely high on this one, and that goes a very long way with me. Plus, Alice Cooper as a homicidal bum. Can't go wrong with that)
34. The legend of Hell House (Not nearly as raw as the book, but still unsettling, dark, and creepy)
33. Audition (starts out dull, then gets a MAJOR pick up. "deeper deeper deeper" Ugh...)
32. Calvaire [The Ordeal] (Who knew the French had hillbillies?)
31. Daywatch (more craziness than you can shake a stick at. When you see a woman drive a car along the SIDE of a high rise building, stop on a window, that shatters, so the car can fall into an office, you know you got some crazy-awesome gold on your hands)
30. Joy Ride (Didn't think I'd like this movie as much as I do, but for some reason, it just calls to me)
29. Darkness (Fantastic atmosphere, and acting. The tension, and build up really gets to me. And while I wish for a different ending, I don't think I'd be happy with one if it existed)
28. Killing Words (manipulation at it's finest)
27. Old Boy (Messed up, but really good. Didn't expect much, but got a lot. And can you really learn kung-fu from watching tv? The answer is yes)
26. The Bottled Fools [Hellevator] (don't let the name fool you, even though it was shot on a shoe-string, you can hardly tell. Claustrophobia is the name of the game, and it gets to you)
25. Fight Club (Good movie, but too many people saying they are Tyler Durden on the internet, is O L D)
24. The Burbs (hilarious, creepy, and awesome. Also one of Tom Hanks' last funny performances. GET BACK TO THE FUNNY TOM!)
23. Saw (I like mysteries, I LOVE suspense, and tension makes me happy)
22. The Ring (yeah, I like it, got a problem with that?)
21. Aliens (Gotta agree, James Cameron's best work to date)
20. Leon The Professional (actually, only the uncut version. That one makes me so sad, I cry everytime, but I still love it)
19. Shaolin Soccer (Kung-fu makes GREAT soccer players. Stephen Chow rules)
18. Video Drome (Cronenberg is a master, and I saw this movie at the perfect time for me. Teenaged, angsty, full of hormones, and in need of something different. This fit the bill on all fronts, and will always find it's way into my dvd player)
17. Hardware (Based on an old comic, and a great piece of cyberpunk heaven)
16. Dawn of the Dead [remake] (yeah, I like the original, but not as much as the remake. One of the few remakes that had the heart, and the guts, to
be good)
15. Road to L (Farfetched, yes, but cool, creepy, and fun to watch)
14. The Exorcist (I don't think I need to say more than that)
13. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre [Remake] (not as good as the original, but it had teeth, and it had heart)
12. Halloween [original] (Yes, the remake sucked hardcore, but the original was made when John Carpenter was at his best. I love Carpenter flicks)
11. [REC] (A Mexican zombie flick that breaks away from the conventions of zombie flicks. Shot documentary-style, from a film crew following firefighters, for a news segment, when things go wrong. Awesome movie, check it out before the remake hits)
10. Dark City (When I saw the trailer for the first time, I KNEW there was not going to be any other movies till I saw that. After I saw it, the bar had been raised in my expectations for all movies to come.)
09. Falling Down (There's not one single moment in the movie I don't like, and won't watch again, and again)
08. Office Space (probably one of the funniest movies ever made. Mike Judge really needs to make more movies)
07. The Thing (Carpenter strikes again. Some of the most creative monsters ever on film. And I love the whole "Can we trust you?" kinda thing)
06. The Signal (contrary to popular belief, it was not based, nor ripped, from Stephen King's, Cell. It was in production as King started writing Cell. It's just one of those coincidences that happens from time to time. Also, great movie. Funny, gory, frightening)
05. Kung-fu Hustle (awesome story, great effects, the funnest fight scenes ever put to celluloid. Can't beat it)
04. Versus (It's as if Night of the Living Dead had taken place in a forest in Japan. And in the Matrix.)
03. 28 Days Later (So different than what I was used to at the time, and still I have a great time watching it)
02. Seven (Simply put, one of the best movies ever made. Get the 2 dvd set, and watch the extras, and commentary. Just an all around brilliant movie, from a fantastic director, and cast)
01. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (I was afraid of this movie as a kid. I'd see the posters in the video store for the sequel, and just cringe. I was in my late twenties when I first saw it on IFC, and became addicted to it. I'm a HUGE sucker for all the TCM movies, yes even the terrible sequels, that shouldn't have happened, since Leatherface and the family died in a cave in the second one. The commentary on the dvd is hilarious, and worth paying the money to get.)
That's it. That's my list. I'm sure if I put more thought into it, more than a few would change places, but I think it's good enough. I'd join in on the LEAST favorite movies list, but I don't wanna turn this in to flame thread (I'm sure a lot of my picks would make several people mad).

Hmmm, looks like I killed another thread. Sorry. :)
But I gotta say, I feel like a moron right now, for forgetting Blade Runner. I love that movie, always have, and will watch several more times. Especially with the 4 and 5 disk sets being available. Aaahh, that 5 disk set looks yummy.

lol 5 discs Blade Runner... that made me lol irl. What's interesting is that reading people's lists there are always movies on it that I thought sucked. Completely sucked, in fact, they're my most hated (cough..bladerunner...cough). So that makes me wonder what on my list do other people find completely horrible?
Maybe I'll go ahead and also make a list of the worst 20.

Which is the beauty of lists like this, it gives you an insight into peoples taste in film. Not only that but a few people may find hidden gems within the lists posted, for instance I just rented a couple of cool flicks thanks to some of the favorites listed! By the way a list of the top 20 worst films sounds like a cool idea, go for it!:thumb:

Yeah, BigJohn, I know how you feel. Lot's of times there's movies I can't stand in other peoples favorites lists. And I'm not surprised at all that there would be a lot of movies in my list others don't like. In fact, I've yet to meet anyone who shares my taste in entertainment. And I've met a LOT of people. ;)
Ok, Marcus, you asked for it. My least favorite (not "worst" as that tends to make people angrier than if you just didn't like their favorite movie) list is being compiled. Hope this thread won't degenerate into a flame war. :D

Alright, so coming up with 20 or 50 was too much for my least favorite movies. So here are the top (or bottom?) 10. Please, I don't mean to offend anyone. These are just movies that I personally didn't like. The reason for them is usually that someone I know loves them and begged me to watch it, and it stunk. But I still respect that they like it. That said, here it is:
1. Broken Flowers – I wouldn't hate it so much if it wasn't my brother's favorite movie. If you hate a movie, you can just not watch it. Not in this case, he watches this crappy film over and over....
2. Akira – I just can't stand japanese “animation”. Reason that's quoted, is that a pan over a frozen shot of a character standing still in an action pose with only the lips moving isn't animation.
3. Blade Runner – There may be a good movie there, I would never know because of how boring it is.
4. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – I'm supposed to admire/look-up to/be entertained by this douchebag why again?
5. The Craft – Fairuza turns around and randomly says “punk rock”... why?
6. Top Gun – This is quite possibly the gayest movie I've ever seen. There's a gay love scene in the boondock saints that's less gay than the straight love scene in this one. And the volleyball scene just seals the coffin. I've got no problem with gay things, brokeback mountain was alright, but they're trying to portrait the height of manliness (fighter pilots, tom cruise) in the strangest way.
7. Brokeback Mountain – Yeah, I got no problem with gay things, but the movie itself was just so mediocre. All in all, if it was the exact same story with the same director, scenery and everything, but just didn't have the gay element, it would have gotten nowhere because the story is weak.
8. Brick – L.O.L.
9. Happy Gilmore – My friends love it so much that we went to see it in theatre as a midnight show not long ago. I walked out not even half way through.
10. The Lost Boys – Kiefer Sutherland? Badass? Lol
Also, I really really didn't like all those 70s/80s highschool movies like Ferris Bueler, Fast Times etc. But I think that the reason I don't get them is because I'm not American, and the people who do like them can relate or maybe they've seen them growing up or something. So they're not bad, they just don't "talk" to me.

Well put, BigJohn!! Great list, even though I love Bladerunner. I really couldn't argue (even if I wanted to) with those reasons either. Then again, I understand that just cause I like it doesn't mean it's good, and just cause I don't like doesn't mean it's crap. Even though I say it is :D
My list got delayed, it's so hot here right now, and I had to cool off for a bit. It'll be up soon, though. Only got 6 more to go. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen my number one least favorite? ;)

Ok, this is just MY opinion. If you like any of the movies on my list, that's cool, I'm sure you've got your reasons to love them, it's all good. Like I said before, just I cause I don't like something does not mean it's terrible. And when I say "it's crap" or, "it sucks" that's just my view, so please don't take it personally.
Now with that out of the way, here's my 20 least favorite movies.
20. American Psycho (Don't freak out, it's not that I don't like it, or that I think it sucks, cause that's not the case. It's just that I don't get it. If it's a joke, I don't get it. If it's supposed to be serious, I don't get it. Nothing real against it, I just don't get it.)
19. Scarface (One of those popular movies I just can't stand. I try to watch it, but just turn off the tv all together instead.)
18. Batman [The Tim Burton one] (If you're angry by this point in my list, it's a good idea to stop reading. I'll admit, I liked it the first time I saw it, but after that, the aroma from this turd just got overpowering for me. Gotham city looked awful, I didn't believe the bat suit for a second, the dialogue was terrible, and that damn "batdance" song wouldn't die!)
17. Star Wars ep.s 1-3 (My bro is a HUGE star wars dork. He insisted we see all three prequels in the theatre, since we saw the other 3 there too. I'm glad I didn't pay for my tickets. What else is there to say that hasn't already been said about this trilogy? I gotta say this anyway, Anakin was more annoying and whiny than Luke EVER was. And I hated the actors that played him. Terrible acting all around for that guy)
16. Halloween [Remake] (I was open minded with this one, for the first 20 minutes, then every other scene, I couldn't help to ask myself, WTF? Like, WTF was Carpenter thinking letting this be made? WTF is Zombie thinking, making it? Terrible movie. Simply terrible)
15. The Orphanage (Not a lot I can say about this more than it bored me to tears. I was REALLY looking forward to it, and was incredibly disapointed)
14. One Missed Call [Remake] (The original was ok, not great, just ok. The remake on the other hand was incredibly boring, and the definition of deus ex machina in film.)
13. The Lion King (Saw this with my girlfriend when it first hit video. And, like with most disney movies, I couldn't wait for the ending.)
12. Top Gun (Same reasons BigJohn gave. Lowsy movie)
11. Nightmare Before... [Hell, I'll just say it, ANY Tim Burton movie] (I can't stand this guys movies. I can't stand the man himself. He's a pretentious wanna-be "artiste" who's main goal is apparently to try and get everyone to like him, but look down on them at the same time. He reminds me of my nephews super annoying emo friends. Oh, and he's not half the artist he thinks he is)
10. Titanic (That's a given, as I HATE love stories. It's manipulative drivel. I'm sure the direction was good, but I just can't stand all that sappy horse crap.)
09. Pirates of the Carribean (More over hyped disney crap. While Johnny Depp was great in it, he can't single handedly save a movie.)
08. Peter Jackson's King Kong (Boring, long winded, over hyped)
07. The Hills Have Eyes 2 [Remake] (It's basically Aliens in a desert. Minimal effort went into this thing)
06. Salo [or 120 days of soddom] (this movie has been defended as a look at man's inhumanity to man, but that's just crap. There's no reason for it's existence, other than to nauseate, and enflame. It's pathetic acting, almost total lack of writing, or dialogue is enough to be on this list. Avoid this flick)
05. Jason X (I don't really need to explain why this movie is on this list, do I?)
04. Happy Feet (I sat through this turd with my niece, who I adore. She's the ONLY reason I finished watching it. It's like the damn thing wouldn't end, it just kept going, and going, and going... It was a nightmare I couldn't wake up from.)
03. No Country For Old Men (Ok, it's not that I don't like it cause of the ending, I actually can't think of a different way it could have ended. I hate it cause it was over hyped, and under delivered. I kept waiting for SOME kind of tension, and there was none to be had. It had a great premise, but was too poorly executed to make me feeling anything but sleepy. The acting was wooden as well.)
02. Any and all films by Uwe Boll (My least favorite list would mostly be comprised of his films, but we all know how bad ALL his flicks are, so on to my number 1 least favorite movie.)
01. Trolls 2 (I didn't believe this movie was real, when my Aunt told me about it years ago, as she tends to exaggerate. I went on blissfully unaware, that she was NOT lying. But you tell me, if someone said "I just watched this terrible movie where at the end, the little boy, the hero, defeats the witch by EATING A BOLOGNA SANDWICH.", would YOU believe them? Well that's exactly what happens in this movie. As he eats the sandwich, the witch screams about the choleterol, and fat content of the sandwich, and melts away. EASILY the worst movie I've ever seen.)
That's it. I hope I didn't offend you, or anything, they're just MY views.
I'm wondering, though, if anyone else has seen Trolls 2? I caught it on cinemax, the one and only time I saw it. Understandably, no one I tell about it believes me.

lol! I must see this now just to see how horrible that is. I totally can't even imagine that...
And Uwe Boll....... yeah....
I probably wouldn't mind him, it's just that I happen to be in a certain field that I love, and he happens to make a living butchering the hell out of it.

Understood. Those movies were all in the 80's, btw. Either way, here's my opinion on the subject.
Having been born in 1974, I went to high school from 1990 - 1993. I was a "child of the 80's", but I wasn't really a high school student back then. I'd have to have been born nearly a half decade earlier for that to be true. However, I can relate to them much more and they speak to me much more for two reasons.
1) They're about believable people.
2) They're about believable issues.
Even when you discount the typical comedy antics, there's a believable humanity and vulnerability to the characters.
In "The Breakfast Club", the character of Brian admits that he wanted to commit suicide because of having fears of failure, too many expectations, and overwhelming pressure. Alley Sheedy's character lamented that she had parents who simply didn't care enough to pay attention to her.
With "Ferris Bueller".... Yeah, you've got the carefree, "live off my charm & looks" Ferris character, but that's juxtaposed by the "OMG, we've got to be adults now" character of Cameron. One highlights the other and illustrates perfectly that turning point between kid and adult. Sure, the antics are far fetched. However, we can all relate to having the weight of adulthood suddenly thrust upon our carefree teen shoulders.
With "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"... That's story's more believable if for no other reason than the writer actually went undercover as a high school student. Even if you didn't grow up in the 80's, you could understand the pressure of sex, trying to impress a girl, juggling school and a crappy part time job, and dealing with that one teacher who always expects more from you. Plus, every class has that one slacker who thinks he can get away with murder.
It's stuff like that that adds a tangible level of depth. I think that it's believable.
More modern teen comedies like "American Pie" series really push the envelope of believability. Pressures of having sex? Sure. Making a pact to have sex before graduation? Kinda silly. A foreign exchange student naked, in your bedroom, AND on your webcam? That's pushing it. Supergluing yourself to yourself? ?!?!?! That relates to growing pains... how? Lesbian makeout sessions? Maybe in our dreams.
"Superbad".... Very funny. Just not very believable. The whole idea of McLovin is a hoot. Some of us here can relate to the fake ID thing. Then you get the idiotic cops in the mix and that throws the credibility out of the window for that character. It's the stuff of great comedies, but it's less palatable in terms of human interest. I kinda blame this on Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow though. Subtlety is not their game.
Don't even get me started on "Juno". I love that movie. I don't necessarily buy her overly produced, supposedly hipster style of speaking, but I like the movie. The one thing that kills that movie's believability are A) the happy ending, B) the outlandishly forgiving parents, and C) Jason Bateman's somewhat child predator man-child character. I'm not buy any of that stuff.
First off, most parents would sh** bricks before being that so understanding about teen pregnancy. Second, her baby daddy winds up with her in a nice and tidy happy ending? In what land is this? I half expected him to run for the hills, as most scared teens might. Finally, Jason Bateman's character having a mid-life crisis was totally believable up until he started hitting on a 16 year old. Ick! For a supposedly good guy, that really broke the moment. Could it happen? Sure. Did I see it coming as a believable possibility, given the world that was previously framed? Nope. Don't even get me started on Rain Wilson's character.
Modern teen comedies are far too brute force. There's no subtlety. The humanity is often drained away by the crude sexual and scatological humor. I'm willing to buy certain outrageous antics, as they can make the difference between funny and VERY funny, but some of that stuff is just pushing it.
I think that once the comedy overshadows the characters that support them that's when I have a problem identifying with them as people.
Modern teen comedies are not great with the notion of subtlety or moderation. Same thing with the torture porn and obscenely gory junk that passes itself off as horror nowadays.
I'm not saying that great modern teen comedies and horror movies don't exist. They do. I just think that so many writers and especially studios have tried to re-write the successful formulae that they've abandoned the respective hearts of the subject matter. A teen comedy without heart is hollow. A horror movie without suspense and actual viewer fear is pointless.

I totally agree with this. I had similar feelings, kinda, when I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall not long ago. It was funny, but it was kinda like every semi-funny thing that could ever happen in the world all happening to one guy all at once, and then turned from semi-funny to over-the-top-funny. All in all, it just lost believability to me.
Getting your heart broken, going on vacation and meeting a girl? sure.
Getting your heart broken by a movie star, going to Hawaii to stay in a $6,000 a night room for free, and then having a girl like Mila Kunis basically man-up and do everything for you? that's just ridiculous.
It's also weird how in all these movies there's a real hot chick, and she takes care of everything. She basically hits on herself for the guy. When does that ever happen?

2. Akira – I just can't stand japanese “animation”. Reason that's quoted, is that a pan over a frozen shot of a character standing still in an action pose with only the lips moving isn't animation.
LOL True. Still, this was 20 years ago. I'm not THAT surprised. Disney aside for a moment, the state of animation has changed over the past several decades. I loved Akira when I first saw it, but I don't nearly like it as much now - on a technical level. So much better anime has been produced since then. Still, I still kinda have to give props to one of the granddaddies of the modern anime. I'm half with you here though.
3. Blade Runner – There may be a good movie there, I would never know because of how boring it is.
It all depends on which version you've seen. There have already been several DVD releases of this film. The removal/addition of the narration track alone has made a huge difference to the noir atmosphere. It's like trying to say that you hated or loved "Metropolis". Yeah? Which cut? The 80 minute one? The 114 minute one? The 153 minute one? The 93 minute one? :)
4. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – I'm supposed to admire/look-up to/be entertained by this douchebag why again?
Y'know. I didn't appreciate this movie so much when I first saw it. I think that it really grew on me after I saw it a couple of times more. Plus, you've got to love how this movie is actually based on a guy who was actually MORE trippy than Depp's Raoul Duke character. Hunter S Thompson was a major a-hole and freak in real life. Depp probably came closer to the real deal than Bill Murray though.
5. The Craft – Fairuza turns around and randomly says “punk rock”... why?
Eh. It's the 90s. Lot of the grunge and goth/emo inspired movies didn't make a whole lot of sense back then. They were about pretty & hip people doing pretty & hip things. That was probably all that mattered for the audiences of those movies. Love the movie. I'm just not going to think that it was award winning writing or anything. It wasn't.
6. Top Gun – This is quite possibly the gayest movie I've ever seen.
LOL. That is so, so mean. :D The definition of manliness changes from decade to decade and generation to generation. Admittedly, this movie wasn't quite Rambo on the testosterone scale, but it had its audience. I think that guys who grew up in the 80s kinda wanted to be Tom Cruise. Then, we realized that he was both nuts and not so manly. :p
7. Brokeback Mountain
Never seen it. Never will. Not because of the subject matter. I've got family members who are gay. That's not a big deal to me. I just think that Heath Ledger (now a dead legend) is overrated as an actor and that Jake Gyllenhaal simply can't act.
9. Happy Gilmore – My friends love it so much that we went to see it in theatre as a midnight show not long ago. I walked out not even half way through.
Och!!! Such a dumb, dumb movie. Funny not because it's good, but funny because it's so unbelievably dumb. The plot is totally stupid. About the only good scenes in that movie are the Bob Barker fist fight and the Julie Bowen lingerie dream sequence.
You've got to remember that this was back when Adam Sandler was still a hot commodity. Saturday Night Live produced such classic comedian such as Bill Murray, John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, Dan Akroyd, Chevy Chase, and so forth. After that, everybody was looking at SNL to produce the "next big thing" in comedy. Because of that, they all looked to Adam Sandler, especially after Chris Farley died.
Unfortunately, apart from the early casts, SNL hasn't had much of a success with producing comic movie stars that are anything other that one trick ponies.
- Mike Meyers is all about dumb characters, silly voices, and stereotypes. His schtick has worn thin. Probably after Austen Powers 2.
- Adam Sandler is all about man-child anger. His schtick has worn thin too. Right about after Little Nicky.
- Jimmy Fallon is all about post-college sarcasm. His schtick has worn thin too. Actually, he was never funny in movies.
- Will Ferrel is all about anger, but in VOLUME. He's entering minute 15 now too. He's only got one note. He screams and acts like a childish idiot. Funny, but for how long?
The next SNL movie victim is Amy Poehler. Watch. Few SNL alum are movie worthy. Even fewer are up to becoming true comic legends.
So, you don't like Happy Gillmore. I'm not surprised.
10. The Lost Boys – Kiefer Sutherland? Badass? Lol
I saw this movie when it came out. I never once thought that he was supposed to be badass. Sutherland's character David always came off as smug and manipulative. He knew that he was immortal and that he'd never grow old. He knew that everybody was just a sack lunch to him and that he'd remain hip and young forever. Plus, he always thought that he was smarter than the protagonist, Michael.
I don't think that he was supposed to come off as intimidating. I'm sure that the characters were supposed to think that he was, but only because they were being tossed into a world of the unknown. Michael ceased to be afraid of David and what he represented by the end of the movie. He had David's number at that point. Badass? Nah. A smarmy douchey jerk? Yeah. Nobody likes an immortal d***head. :D David was a tool and just a puppet of Max.

Wow, Cookepuss, that was really well thought out, and concise. I totally understand BigJohn's reasons for not liking the movies in his list, and wouldn't argue with him over it, or even put my opinion on it, but man, that was a nice educated round up of rebuttals there. It's almost like we're discussing film like adults :D
What you said in your previous post, about torture porn, I can agree with. I'm (obviously) a HUGE horror fan. I like both the top of the line horror movies, that elicit tension, suspense, and chills, as well as the bottom of the barrel stuff, that's pure sensationalism. I'm not saying I like ALL that stuff, but I can sit through some majorly bad movies. My tastes are a bit odd, and often depend on how I'm feeling at the time. For instance, there will be periods of time where all I want to watch are straight to video, or straight to cinemax/HBO/Showtime horror flicks, with no redeemable features at all. Then without warning, I'm all about the suspense of a good thriller.
But at the same time, I'm not one of those guys that sits in judgement of every frame of every film I watch. I really like to get into my movies, and become emotionally invested in them, so I have the best chance of feeling SOMETHING while watching. That way, if I still feel nothing by the end, I know I'm watching some throw away piece of entertainment, that will be forgotten completely in the next hour. I forgive a LOT, as long as a movie has heart, ambition, and real honest to god feeling (not manipulation, like romance movies), I can actually forgive an enormous amount of flaws. It's when films have heart, with no ambition, or ambition with no heart, that I lose interest. And with the amount of straight to dvd films I've seen, I've sat through a LOT of films that have Ambition, and no heart at all.
Like I said though, I've never met anyone with my taste in entertainment. Maybe similar tastes in films, but not even close in music. Or close in Music, but no where near in movies, or games. I'll tell you though, I'm SUPER picky about my games these days. I used to want to play 90% of the games that were out, these days, I barely even think about playing %5. Not that those games are bad, per se, just that I'm that freakin picky. It's weird, I can hardly make sense of my own tastes :)

I really do think that a lot of this has to do with me not being American and sortof "playing catch-up" in recent years with these movies. Your SNL example is perfect. I never even heard of such a thing as SNL up until just a few years ago.
I remember when I just got here, Old School came out and me and some friends watched it. I didn't laugh once and thought it was horrible. Then I happened to watch it again a few years later after I learned what SNL was, who will ferrel was, and that whole style of American Humor, and I could not stop laughing. There were points I couldn't breathe.
So perspective plays a big role in it. All I was used to as far as comedy growing up was stuff like Monthy Python, Fawlty Towers, Ricky Gervais (that's a bit later) etc. And then everything is so different here. What's interesting about that is that recently Ricky Gervais is gaining popularity for some reason here as well. And now you have "american" shows like the office which is basically a translation of the original british The Office by him. It's just strange seeing my friends who are americans watching "dry british-humor", as they call it, and be entertained.
Edit:
Oh, also, I didn't realize there are different versions of blade-runner. The one I saw was a rent from netflix (so it's on dvd, didn't see it in theatre or anything), and didn't have any narration if I remember right. So just in case I ever want to revisit it, what's the specific version I need to be looking for?

Wow, Cookepuss, that was really well thought out, and concise.
Nah. I just watch a lot of movies. My DVD collection here is up to well over 1,000 DVDs. I'm guessing that it's closer to 1,400 if I took time to count. Don't even ask how much I spent last year. (I found out from a FYE clerk who told me and the number is scary. :p)
I'm (obviously) a HUGE horror fan.
Yeah. I'm all about the horror movies myself too. The ones that stick with me most are the ones that make you afraid and not just scared. Any horror movie can scare you. The killer jumps of of the shadows. The maniac rises suddenly for one last kill. That stuff is stock. Few horror movies can actually make you afraid of your own shadow or just plain paranoid. I'm not so concerned about body count. That overproduced, overblown excess is something straight out of the Michael Bay school of thought where bigger is always equated with better.
In general, I'll watch any horror movie though - no matter how bad. I've got a profound love for some of the cheesier ones like "Critters", "CHUD", "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", "Ghoulies", and everything in-between. The more B-rated, the more likely I am to buy it. :p Horror movies and teen comedies are generally where my movie tastes fall. I'm partial to a lot of the 80s fluff too.
Your SNL example is perfect. I never even heard of such a thing as SNL up until just a few years ago.
I was practically raised on it. :) The show's been around since 1975, about a year after I was born. I started watching it when I was about 5 though, as my parents let me go a little wild with my bedtime on the weekend. :)
and that whole style of American Humor, and I could not stop laughing.
Very true. American humor is distinctly different. It is often blunt and crass. Some of the better comedy here is more insightful, provocative, and even subversive, but that doesn't speak for the mass market stuff. I find that British humour (with a "u" ;)) might be as insane, but it generally speaks in a softer and more subversive tone. Gervais' work is a perfect example of this, as is the stuff on Little Britain, and the big screen stuff from Simon Pegg. Maybe it's just the Brit stuff I've seen, but there's more of a tongue in cheek way of doing things. I'm not saying that UK comedy is any smarter or sharper. It just appeals to a different perspective on life, one that's often less "in your face" than American comedy.
It's so hard to talk about comedy. What's funny to one person is totally inane and lifeless to somebody else. It's so subjective. With horror, at least we share a primal set of fears and trepidations. With comedy, it's greatly affected by how and where we're raised. IMO, horror is more about nature and comedy is more about nurture, if you want to take a evolutionary VS cultural view on the topic.

Yeah, this is a good thread. I love to discuss movies, especially with people who aren't borderline retarded, and can allow people to have their opinions without having to tell them how wrong they are for feeling a certain way.
I stick by my least favorite list. Just read through it again, and surprise surprise, I agree with myself.... :D Kinda weird no one argued with it though.
Anyway, good thread to resurrect BigJohn. Kinda funny to see how opinionated I am after some time has passed. :D

But it's not... so... -tear-

Hello everyone. Here's my list of movies that made big impression on me at the time i watched them, so my choices might be a lil bit weird. Here goes.
1. Pulp Fiction - nothing to add.
2. (ex-equo) Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness - Absolute masterpieces of comedy horror.
3. Escape from LA - it's so badass that i love it, and Kurt Russell at his best.
4. Monty Python's: The Meaning of Life - so crazy, surrealistic, wild, fun and intelligent.
5. The Lion King - i like it, deal with it :P, one of the best musicals ever.
6. Dirty Harry - if all cops would be like Harry Callahan there would be no crime.
7. Die Hard - let's face it, christmas isn't the same without John killing terrorists.
8. Braindead - good, mindless slashing entertainment,
9. Police Academy - i've seen it a lot of times when i was a kid, and by a lot i mean A LOT.
10. (ex-equo) Nightmare on elm street, Wes Craven's New Nightmare - Freddy is my idol. These ones are the only written by Wes Craven. New nightmare has a good scenario if you dont look on it as a typical horror.
11. Robocop 1,2 - dont you just love this non-computer FX? 3d sucks, this was the bomb (ooh, i forgot there's so many 3d artists in here :P)
12. Beverly Hills Cop 1,2 - Axel was so great, hope the will make a decent continuation.
13. Singin in the rain - Happy movie, with happy songs, propably goes well with drugs too!
14. Toxic Avenger - Brought to you by Troma pictures, one of the worst (but fun) movies of all time.
15. Gone With the Wind - this one is special, really epic at its time.
16. Cheech and Chong's: Up in smoke - fun stoner movie.
17. Cable Guy - Jim Carrey is really psychotic in this one, i like it, i like it a lot.
18. Naked Gun (three parts and Police Squad) - irrational humour, that's why.
19. Heavy Metal - really fun to watch, this one's just evil.
20. Batman Forever- my favourite Batman movie, kitchy with disco colours and well played bad characters.
21. Kingpin - Best Woody Harrelson movie (a lil bit better than Natural Born Killers in my opinion).
22. The Thing - ooh! special effects!.
23. Hackers - ok, most will say hat this one sucked, right, it has some cheesy lines with pseudo-intellectual words, but it was "sooo cooool", in 1995. Wait, "Cool as Ice" was cool at it's time either :P, i have to think about it again... Anyway, one of my favourites.
24. Wild at Heart - at times when Nicolas Cage's name meant more than bad action movies.
25. Inland Empire - 3 hours of movie, then 1 hour of talking what it meant to be, to those of you who likes to think while watching.
26. Clerks 1,2 - first one was made for no money, second made with a lot of cash but same feeling.
27. Terminator 2 - CG was mindblowing, my favourite is the apocalypse vision.
28. Three Amigos - fun comedy, no more, no less.
29. National Lampoon: Christmas Vacation - definite must-see on every christmas.
30. Short Circuit 1,2 - seen it when i was a kid, and it was such a huge inspiration. Very 80's.
And other ones without any order...
Easy Rider
The Fly 2
The Crow
The Wall
Hair
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari
Orgazmo
Metropolis
The Godfather
Forrest Gump
Shining
Creepshow
12 Monkeys
Jurassic Park
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat
Men in Black
Groundhog Day
Lethal weapon
Indiana Jones series (except kingdom...)
Ghostbusters
The Wedding Singer
Rambo (all parts)
Leaving Las Vegas
Mad Max (trilogy).
Good thread BTW.

Huh, read this thread just before i went to work, and couldn't think of anything but movies for the rest of the day...
Dune - The Lynch version. Production design is probably the best i have ever seen in a movie. Though the greenscreen shots are pretty bad it just adds to the awesome weirdness. I love it!
City of lost children - Eye candy from the beginning to the end, awesome production design here too!
Stand by me - Still can remember the first time i saw it, still great!
Stalker - My favorite Tarkovsky film! Great imagery and thoughtful dialogue.
Lost boys - Awesome, even the pumped up sweaty guy with the saxophone is awesome!
Dark City - like a noir Matrix but much better!
The Perfume - I just love it!
Pans Labyrinth - note: Listening to the commentaries by Guillermo made it even better.
Alien Resurrection - I actually think this is the best of the four, though i like all of them.
The Prestige
The name of the rose
bram stokers DRACULA
Neverending story - the first one of course
The Thing
The Machinist
Black cat, white cat
Blade Runner
Goonies
Big trouble in little china
Seven
Gilbert Grape
Blue Velvet
Amelie
Fight Club
Donnie Darko
Labyrinth
12 MOnkeys
Trainspotting
Gummo
Apocalypto
Edward Scissorhands
Mad max 1-3
Shashank redemption
Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind
Jumanji
Hellboy II
Songs from the second floor, (Sånger från andra våningen), the only swedish movie on the list. Or if someone wants to see a good swedish "crime thriller", see The hunters (Jägarna) not top 50 but it is ok. Swedish movies usually suck. Let the right one in is a pretty good swedish horror movie too, they actually shot it around the area where i grew up :)
oh, i'll just keep namedropping, lost the count and order...:p
Braindead and Bad Taste
Mullholland Drive
Gremlins
Back to the future I and II - never got too fond of the third one, coeboys ain't my thing i guess...
Shutter island
The imaginarium of dr Parnassus
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Old Boy
Lost Highway
Napoleon dynamite
Royal Tenenbaums
Tekkon Kinkurito
Ghostbuster
Starwars 4 - 6
The Shining
Snatch
Solaris - Tarkovsky one
The Burbs
LOTR
Robin Hood - prince of theives
probably forgot a few great arnold movies:o

Lots of good stuff on that list that I haven't even heard of before. I'll check it out.
The imaginarium of dr Parnassus: I just saw this the other day. It was pretty decent actually, better than I had expected since they mixed in so many actors for the same character.

Hero - gorgeous movie, amazing fights, solid performances can't ask for much more. one of my all time favs. without a doubt number 1.
Fight Club - i mean, come on.
Snatch - again.. brad pitt is the man. F*in pikey's.
chris nolan's batman's - redefined a genre and created an entity that will thrive for years to come
Gattaca - such a strong thematic story that pushes and pulls. being born a normal person as all of us are we feel so strongly tied to the success of ethan hawke's character
Gladiator - gotta be there. wish ridley scott had tried to make robin hood instead of gladiator 2.
300 - I love epic battles, and epic battles told well. Good god is this a man's movie at its best.
Equilibrium - awesome movie, they created an entire martial art based around gun mechanics and using a gun as a weapon without bullets... sIICK.
Voices of a distant star - just speechless after watching this movie..
A world without Thieves - andy lau is an amazing actor and drives this movie if you havn't seen it, its a must for sure.
Ong Bak - the reason tony jaaaaaaaa blew up.
up - speaking of up, pixars finest work imo bar none.
let the right one in - vampires done right.
return of the dragon - i'm a martial artist, so there is no one better than good ole Bruce.
Infernal Affairs - the movie that Scorcese stole to make "the depaarted"
The one - jet li at his finest - while not the best plot, I just love it anyway. (or much else great besides awesome fights)
A battle of wits - digs into the heart and meaning behind war.
Lock Stock and Two smoking barrels - I love the cheeky bastard that Guy Ritchie is.
Sherlock Holmes - ^ see above.
Star Trek - Great reboot. One of the best movies of 2009.
Pans Labyrinth - well.. there's no reason it shouldn't be on anyones top 50.
The Prestige - magic gone badass.
Braveheart - 'they'll never take our fredom'
Lord of the rings - amazing trilogy, might be nostalgia and fandom from when I was a tyke that drives my passion for these movies, but so be it.
Blade runner - the film that defined a genre for decades to come
Casino Royale - agree with this being the best bond film to date. the free run sequence at the beginning where the guy goes over top of the wall and bond goes through it. god that was awesome. and that IS bond.
Memento - you can't go wrong with chris nolan
Spiderman 2 - many people dislike this movie, and scoff but its by far the best out of the 3 and I love spiderman.
What dreams may come - talk about imagery.
Bourne Ultimatum - HOLY SHIZZ! this movie took me by surprise and I loved every moment of it
Battle Royale - 50 kids, only one can survive. how can it be bad?
Versus - live action comic book.
The Warlords - andy lau and jet li together what an amazing epic of a movie
The girl who leapt through time - go ahead. laugh. but its got a killer story to boot.
Fired up - ok, keep laughing. haha but I love this movie, its so f*ing funny
Boondock Saints - great movie, shitty director.
Samurai X - one of the only times I almost shed a tear for a love story - to be honest I was like 13.. so it might be pretty bad right now.
Cowboy Bebop Knockin' on heavens door - good, just plain and simple
Wall E* - while some may tout it for being too blatant about its symbolism, I say be blatant, someone needs to get the damn picture, because no ones changing anything yet..
Aladdin - "A whole new world"
Matrix - was revolutionary.
A clockwork orange - wowzer.
Roshomon/yojimbo/seven samurai - kurosawa is the man.
Princess Mononoke - again this movie may be plagued by the same plight as wall e, but still a great one.
District 9 - darkhorse great movie of the year.. overshadowed by so many others, but it had stellar story telling and special fx...
Donnie Darko - eek.
Curse of the Golden flower - similar to Hero
5 centimeters per second - gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous
Return of the Jedi - yea I like the 3rd one better than the second. I'm like the only dude in the world that does. guess that makes me wrong ;-)
Crank 2: High Voltage - so bad its amazing.
Undisputed 2 - I really like michael jai white.
great thread.. and some interesting pics from people...
I'm also surprised at imaginarium making some top 50's .. I thought it was good, but not stellar. interesting :-)

So I couldnt sleep and decided to have a go :)
Reading through other peoples It seems alot of people have the same taste and when I look at my list I think I go for crazy imaginative worlds and stand out character acting haha
Princess mononoke - huge Ghibli fan, I love their imagination and story telling.
Spirited away - beautiful movie that takes you on an amazing journey
Jurassic parks - Love my dinosaurs, This still has some of the best CG in films to date and the making of documentary is a must see
The Hang over - one of the funniest films in a long time, I can watch it over and over. Zach Galifinakis rules, people say hes like a fat version of me, that would be awesome but I don’t see it :)
Big lebowski - the dude is the best, one of my all time favs and a cult classic
Anchorman - I can quote this whole movie haha, ‘the bears can smell the menstruation’
Batman begins and The dark knight - The dark batman is amazing, the first film was all about the bale but Heath Ledger stole the show. Theres not many films where an actor dominates every scene but Heath took it to another level. I am very sad we lost him. His whole portrayal of the joker was just astonishing, I really liked how he kept telling different stories about his scars throughout and how him and bats need each other. Its got my favourite soundtrack aswell.
The Fugitive and US marshals - I love these chase films, just really clever and great acting all round. Tommy Lee Jones does a great job .
Kiss kiss bang bang - the downey jnr rules, a bit of a comedy but fantastically entertaining throughout and Val Kilmer is still alive and making movies :)
Sherlock holmes - again a really clever movie, Im feeling a bro-mance towards doney jnr though. Great cinematography and the scene in the shipyard had me on the edge of my seat in the cinema
Iron man - one of my favourite comic book movies, not a great deal of iron man scenes but just a super cool interpretation from mr Jon Favreau. I super enjoyed the newest installment
Avatar - I know people hate it but being whisked away to Pandora was a huge highlight. I don’t care if the stories been done before. Who hasn’t seen a Tom Cruise film where he loses his skills, meets a lady, regains his skills and wins everything. …..douche
Lord of the rings - I recently watched all the extended editions and cant wait for the blu rays. Stunning movies that really are beautiful to behold, the battle scenes still baffle me and again the imagination is just amazing. Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee were amazing. I really wish they put the actual return of Sauron in there but oh well.
Star wars - not enough space movies, yes the latest movies could never hope to be as good as the originals but gotta love a bit of jedi love, and darth maul owns!!! Jedis still my favourite though, I think it’s the space battle that gets me
There will be blood - I love Daniel Day Lewis and he put in an amazing performance that gives me goosebumps. His presence can be felt in every scene and the portrayal of a selfish man set to self destruct was a spectacle to behold. A little slow yes but the payoff is brilliant, and the soundtrack is super eerie
Gangs of new York - another Daniel Day Lewis showstopper, The butcher is so cool, I wanted him to kill everybody!!!
Pans labyrinth - Guillermo Del Toros imagination is amazing and this tale was exceptional. I don’t stick with subtitle movies much but this was so fresh and imaginative I stuck with it and then made everybody I knew watch it.
Dark crystal - Brian Frouds artwork is amazing and as a childrens movie it was really dark and scary with the skeksis.
Labyrinth - a really fun movie and a trip to another world of strange and delights. And the helping hands rule
Pirates of the Caribbean - cant watch the first one too often as its over played but just a fantastic trilogy. Depps character just oozes personality and davey jones is just awesome
Constantine - Not many people liked this but I LOVE it, The effects and final scenes really amazed me. Something about a broken man really gets me I think haha
Watchmen - again not well received by many but I really liked it. Never read the comics but the way the story was told and the characters throughout was brilliant. A pretty depressing film when I look back at it but I just loved how it was a comic book movie about superheroes but when they live in the real world. Stan Lee says spidermans popular because he has all the real troubles people have but he lives in teletubby land compared to these guys
Godfather - amazing trilogy, about the rise to power and the constant struggle to stay ontop, I really liked the second film with the de niro telling how the godfather came to be
Team America - Its stupid but hilarious, I love spotsworth and the guy that swears all the time. I just thought it was hilarious and what was funnier was how Matt Stone and Trey Parker took the mickey out of america and terrorism
Event horizon - amazing movie, very few space movies out there but this one was brilliant. The ship was shit scary and sam neil becoming a proper psycho was brilliant.
Titan ae - a cartoon that touches on the space thing. The story was just great though how earth has been destroyed and the humans are slowly becoming extinct in space as they mingle with all the aliens and become lower rate citizens
Sunshine - yay space, a really clever movie about a dying star that must be reignited that soon turns part thriller, The star dude was awesome and Cillian Murphy did really well
Interview with the vampire - A completely different take on vampires. Tom Cruise was really good aswell but he sort of did the whole Ive lost my powers but now Im back better thing J I do like tom cruise but the more I see of his crazy antics the more I dislike him, same for the Bale
Sergio Leones Spaghetti westerns - The man with no name, brilliant movies that define the western genre.
Die Hard Movies - I like explosions and John McLane loves blowing shit up.
Forgetting Sarah marshal - Really hilarious movie and russel Brand is actually quite good in it although I cant stand him normally.
Terminator 2 - it’s a classic and deservedly so. Really immersive and great direction
Star trek - The new movie just owns. Great cast and great effects, what else do you need? A little bit of Leonard Nemoy? Deal!
Matrix - Great art direction, great action and a good cast, Keanu Reeves is a super wooden actor but fits Neo perfectly. A really clever plot and its amazing the world they created
Up - Pixars latest masterpiece, I would put all their movies up here if I could. I love how everything in this movie is thought about in terms of design and how it emotes to the viewer. The opening montage with him and his wife had me balling in tears :(
Finding nemo - I love aquatic life and such a lovely story. I like it when Marlins tales are being told across the oceans,
Monsters Inc - Pixar tap into another amazing idea and Boo is super cute.
The Incredible - The demise of the superheroes is brilliant and a fat Mr Incredible stuck in an office gets me every time. I love how he still tries to help people haha
Ninja scroll - Im quite a big manga fan and this is by far my favourite. Great animation and Jubei is just super cool
Vampire hunter d bloodlust - From the people who bought you ninja scroll haha. D is so cool and the tale of love is so enthralling, Some of the best cell animation to date
Holy Grail - my favourite Monty Python movie, its just stupid all the way through and hilarious because of it. ‘she turned me into a newt ……..I got better’
Enemy at the gates - Not a huge Jude Law fan but this story during Stalingrad was really good. Still baffles me how they can make such a good movie about snipers.
Gladiator - gotta love a tale of vengeance :D I think its russel crowes best movie and I just really liked how he lost everything and set on revenge.
Stardust - I was really surprised by this movie. A lovely fantasy tale that everybody should watch
Hellboys - Just great movies with great character design. The art book to the first movie is stunning.
Blade series - The last one not so much but the first and second were Wesley Snipes at his best. Amazing performance from Luke Goss aswell that stole the show.
Indiana jones - don’t need to explain :)
Frighteners - Fantastic movie, made when Weta Workshops had 8 computers.
Lethal weapons - haha mel gibson at his bests. If cops were more like this Im sure we would have less crime
Lilo and stitch - Stitch is amazing, nuff siad
Blade runner - The classic, this is how the future should look. A movie so far ahead of its time.
The prestige - I love the one-up-manship that goes on throughout the film. The ending is brilliant aswell, I still argue with friends about what really happend
Fifth element - Another space movie and its got Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman in it. Its gotta be good :)
So its just over 50 haha, I really couldnt cut it down anymore, I think I had about a hundred before :D sorry on the huge wall of text :D you should feel sorry for my girlfriend as I made her watch every single one and more over the years haha

Yes! I recently saw that one too. As soon as it ended, I watched it again. It's now one of my all-time favorites, if I were to remake my list I'd include this one.
The prestige - I love the one-up-manship that goes on throughout the film. The ending is brilliant aswell, I still argue with friends about what really happend
I used to be a huge fan of this movie, but after seeing it a few more times I'm noticing some really huge plot holes that make the whole thing ridiculous to me.
If you haven't, check out The Illusionist. Along similar (somewhat) lines, and I thought was leagues better. It has so much style too... really inspiring. And funny thing about it, all those tricks, although CG in the movie, were actually performed in reality by some French (or German maybe? I forget) Magician in the 1900s. I saw a video of a guy doing some of them, and it's really impressive.

BigJohn - Yeah, about Parnassus. I actually didn't think that much of it the first time i saw it. But then i saw it with the commentary by Terry Gilliam and i somewhat fell in love with it. It just had so much cool background story and coincidential symbolism with Ledgers death and stuff like that. And i guess i like Gilliams strange imagination and storytelling.
One movie from my list that i would really recommend that not many people might know of is the Black cat White cat, greatest Gypsy comedy i have ever seen, awesome characters and story!
MBT - Yeah, the Burbs, funny stuff, though i love almost every Corey Feldman movie from the 80s, he just appears in all of the cool classics, goonies, gremlins, lost boys, stand by me, THE BURBS!
Great thread, defenetly got me a few movies that i am looking forward to watch.
