Oh man, and here I thought I could sneak in under the radar. Since I've been called out, I guess I have to show what I've been working on, huh? I'll post up some sketches tonight.

Shit, this comp is exploding with great entries! Looks like I'll have to pick up the pace if I'm going to hold my own against you pros.
Here's what I have so far...

I think the bottom right is the most recognizable as the ranger while still keeping an updated look, but that guy next to him looks like he means business. I guess it'll just have to come down to who looks better with an axe.
Oh, and here is some more reference to the original

woo art!
looks like a good start. the bottom right two images have the proper beefieness, but have you compared them to hawkprey's GoW concepts? even though that's a different franchise, it's similar enough that folks are going to have them in the back of their minds.
I know how you feel, the pond has certainly gotten a lot wider and deeper since the last competition. :)

Yeah, the second to last guy deffinately looks more like he belongs in Unreal or something, but I think the guy on the end might still be safe. If not, then one of the hard-edged realistic designs on the bottom left might be fun to play around with.

Looks cool. Space marine, right? The only thing I would say is perhaps think of things that may add some asymetry and loose gear...like the mask from #2 or the pouches from #6...those can add a bit of a layered look as well as add some asymetry...I agree with Marcus so far the one that has the most mass and weight is #7. Also markings...check Aliens for this but think about uniform and military markings...surface detail will help sell it a bit more. Good stuff.

cool. yeah i like the beefiness of number 7 but i like the helmet of number 2 and some armor elements of 8. anyway i think that for a first pass this is cool but i would consider breaking out of what seems to be pretty similar to the original character. i would like to see him with a twist of something different. his silhouette could be altered for added interest. one thing i typically do is flush out all the "expected" ideas and start creating more wild versions to see how well they stick. anyway i like what you have so far, but i think, after seeing your winning piece from the last competition, that you have a greater creative range than you are showing us. thanks for the posts and i hope this helps. ;)

A good way to do that would be checking out something similiar but different...samurai armor for instance...same ideas but done differently. Also mellowsmoothe's point even applies to the helmet...they are very similiar...if there was some function that could play into breaking it up...like the mask you have in #2 or goggles...the Boba Fett helmet...simple but that eye piece that swings down adds some functionality and breaks the symetry. Great stuff though.

Thanks for the input guys. I agree the designs can deffinately be pushed further. I'm pretty much going to use these as a starting point to see how far I can go with the elements that make this guy recognizable. In the next pass I will focus on adding more surface design like gear, battle damage, markings etc. to flesh them out. I will also be incorporating the character in "quad damage" mode, so there should be more room for asymetry there.
In the end I want this guy to look like a plausable space marine that's been trapped in this alternate demension filled with the horrors of the necronomicon. Hopefully the second pass will be a little more exciting :thumb:
