Dr. Fred Edison

http://www.dariocoelho.com/kram/comp/edison.gif

i decided to make a redesign of dr. fred edison, the first evil, then just crazy character from maniac manson and finally day of the tentacle.

i want to keep the original humorous style, but push it a bit more to the darker side. as you can see in my "thumbnails" i also tried to make something like a steampunk dr. fred. even an asian version found its place, but this not really meant to be serious. ;)

anyway...here are the thumbnails. hope you dig!
i hope i'll find a internetcafe in rio where i can scan in the modeling sheet and the winning pose. this challenge will be fought in the holidays!

Woh, really nice sketches here. You even managed to keep his original personality, niice. On the top right, this chinese one is funny, but I like the grouchy looking one even better (top left of page two). It looks like a coffee addict that is a pain to deal with even if he had his morning coffee:p

Nice start!

thanks for the praise, fred!

my favourite one of them is also the top left version. it may be very similar to the original design, but still has its own new feeling. putting the character in a completely new world and change his outfit to a non recognizable status dont fit the contest idea i guess. so thanks for the comment, made me more secure with my decision.

i'll try to bring the "new" feeling more obviously in the final illustration.

hmm, your images seem to be dead (broken link). You might need to consider using the attach file option so that this doesn't happen too often:)

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. You've really captured the feeling of Dr. Fred and am interested to see how you evolve him... DOTT is one of those games I try to go back and replay at least once a year.

Btw, I just saw the sketchbook postings in your other thread, really nice studies!

thanks for the comments, hombres!

-fredh: thanks for the hint! my webhost is normally steady, but if this happens again: please write me and i will attach the files.

i am planning to post the modelsheet and the first sketches for the final illustration tomorrow. just have to find a internet cafe that offers a solid scan. thinking about the design and the competitions name "extreme makeovers" i may be a bit too near to the original design, but i just couldn't figure out why i should turn him into something he simply isn't.

you'll see...

here you go...

like i said...i hope my "redesign" is still interesting, even if its not the completely different approach.

the second image is the announced sketch of the final illustration. im not sure about if the "interesting pose" has to include the feet...
i was also thinking about putting dr. fred into his environment, the dirty, freaky labor. but... as the challenge is about the character and not the fancy background i thought it may take to much attraction away from him.

would be very glad to read some of your opinions about...

the model sheet, and the sketch. :mugs:

This looks extremely good! The modeling sheet turned out extremely well.. however, I find his expression has been lost in the translation of sketch to modeling sheet. What I really liked about your sketch was his grumpy I need coffee look. And he also looked like a real grouch. In your modeling sheet, he looks almost cute and kind. I believe due to his eyebrows being less emphasized, his mouth being less curved in a menacing look, and his glasses that are now curving down in submission, rather than upwards in arrogance.

Besides his expression, the pose and pencil style really came out well. I can't wait to see what comes next!

thanks for the comment, anti! i totally agree with you about the expression. as i dont have so much time for the whole contest i wont change the modelsheet anymore but i tried to catch that face again in the drawing for the final illustration.

so here it is! i'll paint the illustration with gouache, so i wont have much options for changing stuff. will be interesting, as its the first time im painting a whole scene with gouache, but you grow with the challenge, aint it like that? ;)

i hope the colors will come right in the scan. they have the worst scanner equipment in these internet cafes. when they even have any...
this scan is a bit grainy because of the watercolor paper im using for painting.

This is seriously sweet. I dig all your sketches and even though I have no exposure of the game, the doctor you drew exude a lot of character.

And dang, you gonna use gouache. I will love to see how this turn out. I can't do traditional painting for nuts!

Good luck man. ^^

so here it is! i'll paint the illustration with gouache

Showoff ;) Just kidding, looking forward to seeing this painted up. I do wish you had explored the redesign options a little more, but he's still one of my favorite game characters so it'll be fun to see either way. Thanks for the comments on my guy, also.

i got ill the last days of my holidays so i didn't have the head for painting. thanks to the extension, now that i am home again, i had time to scan in the unfinished gouachepainting and started painting on in painter. as this is the last day i hope i get it finished fast.

heres a wip. :)

Nice! I really like the colors in this piece. The only thing I might suggest, if you were going to work on it at all after the competition, would be to add a few harder edges into key areas of his face, just to draw focus there a little more. Good luck to you.

nice! This has a very different feel to it than any other entry. I like the green stuff in the background. The tentacles are cool too. He looks like we cuaght him in the middle of his goings-on.

Dario

thanks for the nice comments! and yes, i am going to work it out a bit more after the contest...there are still some things i just cant let go.

-rv_el: you describe very precisly the feeling i was trying to transmit, so im glad to read your words. :)

I really dig the painting. Some things you can't let go? U gonna do more for the painting? Not sure what else can be added, maybe some gooey liquid on the floor near the tentacles?

Anyway, real sweet man. Good luck for the comp!
