View Full Version : 2d Minicomp: Desert Behemoth!

So, the comicon challenge seems to be in full swing--let's get back to rocking with these 2d mini challenges! Hopefully we can make these 2d minis as strong as the 3d ones have been!
http://30lives.com/gaorg/2dminicomp2.jpg
Here's our theme:
Desert Behemoths!
The last 2dminicomp was an environment one--this one is a character one.
The objective: Design a Desert Behemoth!
Let's say you're a concept artist at a studio and the designers come to you saying they need you to come up with concepts for the monster boss for the "desert level". This beast has been described as solitary, angry, and without any intelligence beyond instincts (no technology etc.). And, of course, it needs to be big or bad enough that it might be considered a boss monster.
Need some inspiration? Go rent these!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087182/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120201/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100814/
The Specs:
Submit one image, 1000x1000 pixels or less. This image should include a 'final Desert Behemoth image' (required), and any preliminary work (sketches) you wish to show (optional). The 'final Desert Behemoth image' part must be a full color representation.
Also, in your final image you must somehow show scale! This can be as simple as a little silhouette of a guy, a dune buggy, anything you want--but something visually recognizable as scale.
What you do NOT have to do: You do NOT have to draw a full environment for this monster. You can if you'd like, but a simple solid color or gradient background is fine enough. The focus is on the monster!
Otherwise, anything goes! These minicomps are meant to be fun, quick, goofy, and just quick ways to spend an afternoon or two.
Please post all work-in-progress shots and questions in this thread!
The SubmissionWhen you have an image you like, follow the instructions on this link:
http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/minic/painting/join.php
Don't forget to hit upload!
Soft Deadline: Voting starts August 10th, around midnight! Goodluck!

To put in simple what he means.
A Large Desert Monster.
That should dumb it down anoth for some people to understand.

Got a little time to play. This little guy has a trick up his sleeve in the form of a face shield. What better way to protect your weak spot? Big eyes on the side are for wide angle movement detection, then it opens its shield to take a peak and zero in on its prey before the pounce!

bb0x --> Maybe loose the lense flare. I am a firm believer that they shouldn't be used unless absolutely necessary. I think they only work in a divine type images. Besides this, it's coming along well. The overlays you used for giving him some grit is nice, but I wonder if a more mountainish overlay would work. Perhaps give it a try to see what interesting effects you can come up with because your base image so far has a lot of potential for cool overlays.

BlankSlateJoe: Thanks, I'm trying to go with something a little different than the usual crop of baddies and I want to make it into a game character at some point ... I'm also planning to do something with the final image I haven't seen here yet ;P
bbox: Nope, bricks were too uniform, I was looking at a grasshopper as reference and hand drew the lines. The wings have been given the least love and it shows. Maybe Ill play with them tonight :D
I like the new version of yours better though that red glow in the eye feels a bit to mechanical/terminator like to me.

How do you know he didn't freak out and nearly fall over sideways from the flash? :P
It appears it was mainly one offending leg and I made it better. ATM I'm done with this, may tweak later... but for now I'm done. Thanks for the observation :P

Samahain: good to hear, I liked your image but felt that so much more could be done with it, so like I said, good to hear your going to spice it up ;P
Ninken: Ive always liked that kind of monster, maybe as a result of playing castlevania.
Hobodactyl: Both the creature and the coloring of the BG gradient remind me of an aquatic spider, maybe the guy on the floor could be in a diving suit :P
Now then, I have run into an interesting phenomena. Ive shown my image to a few people and though its meant to be concept art, I guess it doesn't look rough enough to be viewed as concept art so people look at it as a "finished piece" and some start picking apart all the stuff I didn't care about as I created it with the understanding I was making concept art. I'm glad to hear suggestions and such as I may use them to polish it up even more, I just thought that was interesting. I like the painterly concept art style but I tend not to use it O.o I draw really crappy (like, seriously... crappy) thumbnails to get my ideas down, choose one and then draw a refined clean shape to color up.

Here my entry unfinished. Still going to clean up stuff like his debris, add more debris, background, crispen some things etc. My idea was to go more southwest desert and my guy comes out of the sand and uses what ever debris is laying around to create form.
For the record, the image really looks better on my computer before I have to alter it to post. The darks are blacker, and theres more orange and yellow on my computer file for example and every things just clearer. Why? I know it goes to jpeg and all that, but is there anyway to not lose so much in translation?

Thaks for the nice comments, guys! Some good entries here!
-SecondBanana: I really dig the idea and overall impression of your concept. For tweaking the composition a bit you could decrease the size of the mountain on the right, because it follows the form of the behemoth which can be a bit confusing. The painting would also benefit from some color variations!
About your jpeg saving problem. I guess you have set up the color management in PS to Adobe RGB 1998. If you did so, be sure windows is using the same profile in the color management. I'm not a pro at all when it comes to that technical stuff but i had quite the same problem and could solve it with that. Also never adjust colors, contrast or brightness manually on the monitor. Instead get a standarized profile like Adobe RGB and set it as default. The colors may not be the best for you, but it won't show a completely different picture to other people. As soon as you invest in a semi-professional monitor you will see the difference. :)

Hahaha....Can't believe it that i really love this forum. Each month have a challenge. Ups, time to stop talking.
Here is my sketch, i give him name, Derock. A desert behemoth that have a body like a big rat with a couples of horn for censoring creature's motion, upper body of rock for camuflase, big mouth in left and right side of his stomach to eat, forehand to digging and poison tail to poisoning the bait :)

holi --> Really like your concept thus far:)
Secondbanana --> looking good looking good. Careful with the right mountain though. Right now, it looks like the mountain is the behind part of your smoke creature. Perhaps if you continued the smoke over the mountain a little, this would help disengage the two. For the skull.. I hope you are using reference:D It would be cool if you got some cracks in there and make the bone structure a little less smooth textured and curved. Also, maybe continue the black smoke on top of it because even though the smoke is his body, it should still fly about at random and overlap things. Otherwise, great work thus far! Keep it up!
WhiteGuardian --> Are you using reference to come up with your ideas? This is a good base, so now all that is needed is finding some refs for how lizard paws work. Also, perhaps there exists something cool for tail ends. Example, look at dinosaur tails, dragon tails or scorpions to find some interesting endings/tips that can work for yours. Still a long way to go, but it's showing progress. Keep hammering away at it!
Here is work in progress. Started it today and lost half of it when photoshop crashed!!!! I can't believe photoshop crashed! It hasn't crashed in 3 years:brick: :brick: Oh well, I am going to go with a desert fire breathing serpent type creature. I didn't give it eyes because I didn't want it to look intelligent. It moves about by instinct. Still a lot to do.

Cause i heard that Comicon Challenge have been extended for 2 days.
dmg86, he is missing saliva to make him look even more nasty. Good work otherwise.
NathanA, the background looks great, but the ape is a bit simple. He is missing teeth, eye details, and muscle tones in his joints. It's still a wip, so I am sure you will have this covered in your next update:)

Andrea, your picture is horrible! You know why? Because on the very bottom it tempts me. It tempts me with the answer to whether or not fish get thirsty and then never links me to the truth! I do like the actual picture though, a very good overall atmoshpere, and the rider is definitely my favorite part. The horse looks sorta like he is going into the ground, might just be me, but it was a quick first impression.
Fred, the fireworm is looking beefy. Most lovely. The wormies are all looking awesome.

Muchomuchacho - I really like the design, and the little figures for scale are awesome. I'm not a fan of the heavy texture you've put on the bottom of your sketch presumably to indicate the ground, it's very distracting to me, but that really is me nitpicking. Looking forward to your final!
Hey Raz thats looking really cool! I'm liking the dust clouds. The only observation I would make at this point is that the behemoth looks abit unstable. I know its meant to be charging, but because all four legs look like they're on the ground and its leaning at that angle it makes it look like he's about to topple! That's only my view on it though.
Since your not on a computer I don't know how practical it is for you to change it. But heres my suggestion anyway - maybe lifting his front left leg up off the ground would help so it looks like the creature is pushing off it's right leg and turning.
I might do a rough sketch for the final tonight as well, but for now I've done a sketch, just playing with forms mainly concentrating on face/head of the behemoth:
http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/3108/doodlinginitialsketchinnh7.jpg
the thing I don't like is that I couldn't get him as angry as I would've wanted. I want more of a smoldering anger rather than vicious anger. Hmm actually looks a bit docile at the moment...

cheers for the advice vorsp, sadly i cant erase pen lol! i deff would have done that idea, i may do it some time in the future.
I like where urs is goin, it does need to look more angry tho, i recomend looking at some pictures of angry looking lizards! also maybe angle the head down to give its brows more of a v shape? like this  lol

This is my wip, I hope to develop it further. I think the behemoth is pretty self explanatory. I wanted to make a really slender but massive amount, kinda like a cross between a elephant and a brachiosaurus.
Somehow I cant get my photoshop color profile and the jpg color profile to be the same, so this is slightly more saturated then the original.

Muchomuchacho - I really like the design, and the little figures for scale are awesome. I'm not a fan of the heavy texture you've put on the bottom of your sketch presumably to indicate the ground, it's very distracting to me, but that really is me nitpicking. Looking forward to your final!
QFT, ditch the overlay and put down some paint foo

Thanks Raz, I've worked on mine more tonight, I'll post up some variations tomorrow.
Renell77 - Reminds me of Duriel from Diablo II, mofo of a boss - looking good, I like the action, makes it look fast.
Supervlieg I too am having a difficult time with colour management :brick: Also you've posed the legs of your creature very well.
Free-Willy, looking forward to seeing colour on that!
Toma, plenty of time:thumb: , we have till the 10th!

Will this comp can be extended Joe?
Cause i heard that Comicon Challenge have been extended for 2 days.
proooobably not..it seems like it might not be needed this time around--theres lots of entries and lots of things near completion... 3d comps are a much more time consuming investment than concepts, so theyre more inclined to be extended if very few are finished.

This monster wouldnt work in a desert.
Its pointed feet would make it sink.
Really monster needs many feet or large feet.
Pointed feet would work in desert.
Just a tought here... Crabs have feets like these and they work just fine in the beach sand... Also, not all deserts are made of soft sand like saara. You have some rocky ones too, where these feet would work great.
I do understand what Kidd is saying tough... I just wouldn´t be so sure about it...

Heres my near final sketch, I'm going to place him in an environment later after I finish off his design. He's a bit simple at the moment I fear, I think I need to add interest to the rest of his body, continuing the design of his face.

I rearly using ref. Just using my imagination to create. I don't meant to make a tail same like scorpion tail, just same function like that. But, thx for the support. You have to finished with your entry too. :) Thx also for extending the comicon deadline. That's a great help :thumb:

Thanks whiteguardian, I am going to work on mine today and tomorrow if needed. Going out to work on it right now in fact:) Yours is coming along well I see, but you really should use reference. This was the first thing that was drilled and beaten into our heads when I first went to Illustration and design. They forced us not to use our heads. If not for this comp, you should really practice looking at images and copying things for a while. This would build up your internal library with correct details. Once you got a big enough head, you can then skip looking at refs and start blending everything in your imagination... which is fun:) Anyways, good luck in this comp. Hope you will finish too!!
Zetshui -> nice to see a new face. Welcome to a GameArtisans mini comp:) Nice start so far. I am guessing it's like a flying fish that has jumped out of the sand. This could be a cool approach. Looking forward to seeing where you take him next.
Vorsp -> Looking good man. Really like the facial details. Since you are still in your early stages, I'd probably play with his stance a little by cutting off his legs in photoshop and seeing if you can rotate and destort the legs and body a little to see if you can come up with an interesting pose and angle. Once that is done, blend everything back together with a paint brush (you will have plenty of holes). Other than that, he is looking really good! Keep up the good work.
Rezeroth -> Very cool.. nuff said:)

Razzmatazz- As a fellow monocle enthusiast I feel I must say your munster seems a little off balance, it might help to shift a leg to hold up that weight or maybe add more movement to imply him sliding or something. It's a pretty cool creature though, and the sword dude is full or character.
Willy- Your guy reminds me of how DaVinci drew monsters. An awesome and unique culmination of recognizable animal characteristics. I can't think of a cooler guy to have your art compared to, but I calls em' like I sees em' good stuff.
Rez- Your stuff is very clean, and very intimidating! How is he going to move? Is it going to be one of those crazy flying dudes like that boss from..was it zelda or shadow of the colossus? Egh, There is one cool one I have in mind. That would be pretty rockin' Either way, Very classy.

I saw this minicomp in an e-mail about three days ago and thought it would be fun. I hope I'm not too late to join. Here are the ideas and doodles I have done so far.
Also, when is the final upload deadline? Voting starts tonight around 12 midnight, so I'm guessing before then?
Thanks!

Muchomuchacho - Uh, Rez as in me? lol! Sorry, missed your msg. Thanks man. I do think that it burrows itself in the sand most of the time and slithers like a snkae. But with that scale of his, i added fins on him to help him sort of swim in the sand as well. In comparison to his scale, the sand would be very fine so its almost water like. Hhaha..just my thought. Im pretty bad with rationals X__X

Hey all.
I know this is VERY VERY late but been busy with other things. Here's my entry that i did albeit admittedly kinda rushed. But havent really digital painted in a while and was just getting back into it. It's not overly creative either but enjoyed it nevertheless. And that's the main thing.

Weird thing, can't actually upload and submit final piece....
Supernova87
08-11-2008, 07:25 AM
Got it to upload now!
Anyways, here are my concept sketches that I went through:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b178/magicmonkeydust/1Behemoth-concept_sketchescopy.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b178/magicmonkeydust/2Behemoth-concept_sketchescopy.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b178/magicmonkeydust/Final_behemoth_landscapecopy.jpg
Just some quick silhouettes but I felt that some of them looked too non-behemoth-like, I think 3,6,7 and 8 were the ones lacking that certain aspect.
I kinda just went with number 1 and go with the flow.
The 2nd image shows this huge serpent-like monster with shell-like armour and donning an ancient mask....the idea was soon scratched, I wasn't feeling it.
So I chose to create a new design but keeping a "serpent" base. My previous post shows the final concept, inspired from Guyver anime, specifically the hyperzoanoids (as they're called) ENZYME II from episode 9 and ELEGEN from episode 4 who is eel-like.
