He's one of my favorites of all time, I plan to go nuts with the Cuts. :)

Ah yes, Cutsman as only the honorable grinsman could bring to the lcd screen. This is gonna be hot. Not as cool as MetalMan but real close. I played a ton of MM2 but not as much of 1.

Good to see ya here

Ok, time to get started...

Background story: Deep in thought about how next to take over the world, Dr. Wily suddenly noticed he was in need of a haircut and a moustache trim. Rather than leave his fortress, he chose instead to build himself a hairstylist cyborg - Cutman. Unfortunately, during the final phase of construction there was a programming goof and Cutman was jumbled up with the new war bot that Wily was testing.

The end result was a Cutman that is equal parts stylish, effeminate hairdresser and destructive, sociopathic lunatic.

The one on the left is too close to the megaman x designs for my taste.. needed to get that out of my system. The one on the right is starting to head in the right direction for what I have in my head, but there's still plenty of sketching to be done.

nice. i talked to mr. "rv_el" at work about your design thoughts. cool. it looks like its going in that same direction. i can't wait to see how much further you push it. i dig the freakiness that is starting to develop in his face and in his physique.

Thanks mr. smooth, i'm looking forward to your take on contra. I've had the music stuck in my head nonstop since i saw the entry, and rv_el gave me a hint as to the direction you might be taking him in.

Had some time after work tonight, so I thought I'd try some quick silhouette sketches... trying some directions I might not have originally considered. Don't know what I think of them yet.. maybe I can pull elements from them.

The two distinguishing features that stand out as "Cutman" to me are his jumping ability and scissor blades attached to his head somehow. I'd like to incorporate those two things into the final no matter what.

Would love to hear suggestions from anyone else.

This style you're doing reminds me alot of Hawkpreys older work, particularly his "craveworthy (http://www.hawkprey.com/craveworthy.htm)" series which could be good or bad, you decide!

gorillagrin

Thanks ThatDon, that's good to note. I've seen a lot of hawkprey's stuff but not those specific drawings and I see what you mean about some of my sketches getting pretty close to that look. Something I'll have to stay conscious of and try to avoid.

As a side note, would you mind converting those images to links so they don't take up such a large amount of space in this thread?

done.

ps. everything looks like something ;)

Much appreciated. It's true, everything is going to end up being a combo of past influences and ideas, but I'd like to at least have a final design that doesn't make people think I'm trying to gank Hawkprey's look :) I'm glad you pointed it out.

Hey, it's not like he has a copyright on killer b/w concepts ;) Keep it up, I personally dig 2 and 6, while 3 is pretty cool too, a agile cut man.

Personally, I don't really see a resemblance between your work and hawk's. Sure, maybe one of your sketches looks 5% similar to one of his, but this is clearly just by coincidence. That said, I kind of like number one. I am not very familiar with the mega-man series since I never played it, but if he is a boss type character, you might need to lose the skinny look and beef him up a bit. Something like no#4, but with no#1's shape.

Regardless, it's looking good. You have really thought about your design and you are doing a great job in exploring it. Keep up the good work:thumb:

Fred: Cutman was an agile boss. Ninja style If I remember, bouncing around and tossing his blades at you.
I dig the lithe look of a lot of these concepts.

of the recent batch I like the first on the bottom row (5 I guess) and the mantid alien looking on (number 7). I still prefer the second one of the first batch though, the crazed serial killer style one.

Thank you for the comments everyone. Yeah, Cutman is pretty agile which is why I'm going for a sleeker look. Actually I was playing the game the other day and he's really kind of a twerp... hopping all over the place and trying to throw scissors at you. For his update I want him to feel more intimidating and unstable, but still retain some of that annoying pest quality.

Working towards a final design... it's still rough but I thought I'd post it up to get some opinions. I kept going back to the 2nd design.. that one was the closest to what I had in my head. Gave him a launcher arm this time around to incorporate the blades that he threw in the game.

ohh boy thats lookin pretty cool. i like the difference in the style for each arm. also the face how the eyes go back to the huge pincers on the head. im wondering how he would walk though as his feet done seem like they would bend so much. still early though u might already know what im talking about.

When I looked at the latest sketch it reminded me of a cybernetic Edward scissor hands. Good stuff and a very interesting take on a classic character!

Marcus

PS: What are your plans for the color scheme?

gorillagrin
07-03-2007, 06:43 PM
Thanks guys.

Frozan, good point about the feet. My idea is that the "foot" portion of the boot can pivot independently from the rest but I see I'll need to make that more clear in the design.

Marcus, good eye :) Edward scissorhands was actually one of the things I've been looking at for inspiration on this guy. As far as the color scheme goes, right now I'm planning to use colors pretty similar to the original cutman. I figured since I've taken him slightly into left field I should at least try to connect back to the original through the colors. So I'm thinking the white, pale skin mixed with a reddish/magentaish chipped paint scheme for the armor. In my head I think it'll work but only one way to find out!

This is pretty close to final on his design.. still have to go in and polish things up and hit up the finer details, but any suggestions are more than welcome.

http://gorillagrin.com/postings/cutman/cutman_sketches04.jpg

Then it's onto the turnarounds, and then hopefully an color action piece. It'll be cutting it close.

Hey this came out really cool nothing on critics just can't wait to see those orthos. :)

very nice. great colors. solid design. two things i would consider: 1) since he is supposed to have this S&M, pervert feel (right?) maybe a darker crimson might be interesting to try as a possibility. i know he was supposed to be flamboyant but he seems a bit more serious and sinister. let me know what you think. 2) you have this cool touch of blue in the silver arm joint on, what would be HIS left arm... i would like to see more of that silvery metallic blue in his scissors and other silver parts. 3) oops there is a "3"... his feet are not on the same plane... might want to check your perspective.

all of this being said you are doing a great job and you will be one of the leaders in the competition, no doubt!

very nice design indeed...tought the muscles could be more soft and smooth...real loved the gun and cutty blade design :)

You really kept to the spirit of megaman. Very nice work. If it were me though, I might put some grooves on the inside of the scissors just to give them a little more emphasis. They are a tad boring right now.

I really like his armor design and colors and putting in the small previous version was a nice touch:)

Thanks for the feedback everyone, much appreciated.

Sinz: Thanks :) It's hard to get excited about orthos but I know it's time to get them done

mellowsmoothe: All really good points, thank you. I'll give the crimson idea a shot and see how it works.. I wasn't thinking S&M specifically but that could work. I'll definitely work some hints of blue into the rest of his blade parts. And yep, totally guilty on the feet perspective.. I'll make sure to fix that.

Kalango: Some softer edges in his skin might work well to contrast with all his metal bits, thanks I'll give that a shot.

Rain: I'm really glad to hear you think it keeps with the spirit.. I wasn't sure if I was straying too far from that. I agree about the boring blades, they could use a little more internal design to spice things up.

Self: less typing more drawing.

Looks great. I really like the silhouette and i think the color is perfect. I like the mix of colors in him and i especially like the reflections on the boots. I agree that the blades could be spiced up. Could may be even try doing some notches here and there. Either slight damage, or like on the very back of a knife. not so much that it comes off more like knives than scissors though :/. Might not be the best idea, but could try it.

It looks like you nailed just about everything. He looks agile, and is very much like cut man, but extremely made over... to give opponents an extreme make over of his own :approve:

........ It'll be cutting it close.

Hardy har har!!! good one! :)

i better ride the wave with you guys and scream some "oooh"s and "aaah"s. :)
great, poppy image! i just can get over that one point that disturbs me when looking at your work...im saying to help you!

his feet look distorted, not correctly places in perspetive. especially his right leg, so the left from our view. it just looks weird and lowers the quality of your work a bit. im sure its in your interest to get some more points. ;)

great work anyway! waiting for your next steps...

Whee, finals!

This was a lot of fun. Part of me wishes I had gotten around to an action illustration, but I decided I didn't want to spend every last second of my free time in front of a computer.

I had the same issue that a few other people seemed to.. after I hit "submit final", there was no acknowledgement of it actually being submitted. Hopefully I did everything right.

Also, sorry about the layout of the orthos, but I couldn't fit him all on the same line without it coming out tiny.

Awesome! Really great presentation. Very clean and elegant work. The orthos are super clean and perfect for modeling. The pink font is hilarious. I think all the graphical stuff really helped add to the whole deal.

looks like he could really put an eye out.
