Hey guys,
This painting was created as a practise piece. I haven't painted a character in a long while, so I decided I needed a good kick in the arse and this is what I came up with. I know the idea ain't original, but it's an excersise that I really had to do... I guess I wanted to challenge myself.
... Here's a quick progress video on the steps I took to paint this thing.

wow, I like it a lot! I am not really one to crit on something so nice, but the horns.. maybe you can blend them into the head some more. Perhaps a bigger knob thingy or something where they connect?
Are you going to color it?

Initiative,
Thanks for the compliment. I think I might give it another pass at tightening it up. Right now, the general idea is there, all that remains is a day or so to really render the hell out of it.
Keep feeding me suggestions:).

Really good work! How about the shield? It would be hard to perform special tricks if his handle is made out of cloth. How about a rod or a handle made of metal?

Antimagic, I completely agree with you. I'll make the shield more rigid. It would suck if he goes through a volley of flaming arrows. His shield wouldn't last:).

my my this concept is stunning. i agree with the horns somewhat. if you look closley at it and just add some highlights around the edge on the top part of the skin where the horns meet you will instantly have what looks like skin growing over the horns.
I really like the design of the shoes your have on there.
the shield has a awesome shape to it and i also agree that the cloth handle should be bumped up to something a little more solid.
all around looks great though. and i dont know if u said but are u coloring it?

Frozan, yes I'll be coloring it. I agree with everyone's crits and I'll continue working on it. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

It's looking really good here. After creating environments for so long, I see you haven't lost your touch for characters:thumb: I agree with the upper comments, can't wait to see how you will finalize him:)

Glad you will fix the shield. Can't wait to see how this guy turns out! I don't think anyone mentioned it.. but the carrots around his belt... they really need some love:inocent:

Hi All, I finally finished it... well I'm sure I can always do more, but that will have to wait. As I was polishing it, I noticed a ton of anatomical mistakes. His right arm and torso had issues, and his head was too low. So I fixed those things along with a few other things like the legs and minor pose fixes. I was even about to add a background to it, but got intimidated by the amount of work I'd have to do... yes, I'm that lazy:).... Anyway, here it is.

Thanks Fred, I haven't done any environments in a while also... I think I may have to work on a new piece in the near future. But for now, I think I need to brush up on my anatomy and paint looser. I still find I'm being too stiff.
Thanks all for the crits/comments. Please keep them coming so I can better my work.

He came out extremely well. Both the shield and horns have been really improved upon. Usually, horns that big always look wrong, but you really managed to make them work for you. My only two cents are the teeth on his belt. I know you are trying for a scratchy rendering look for everything, but using it on these long teeth only makes them look more like carrots. Maybe if you crosshatched the highlights vertically instead of horizontally, it would be better.
Really great work here. The sketchy look of everything looks great for this type of creature.
Nice website by the way.

Antimagic:.... LOL Carrot Sticks.. It's actually his food supply:P.
I totally get what you mean. You're absolutely right. I'll render the highlights more vertical.

Yeah, his belt items need some touch ups;) But, I really like your style. You made a messy sketchy style work for a final piece. This always deserves respect.
Hope to see more of your work, environments.. or characters:)

Nice work on finishing this one up. Like Antimagic, I also dig the style you made this one in. There is just one thing though, I find the light on the shield a bit strange. You made the light on the shield so intense, that you can see it's thickness, and you didn't bring any of this strong light on to the character. Besides this, everything else looks great man. Especially the horns.

Good save, man. I really like the costume design and the weapon. Generic but looks so damn good!
