View Full Version : 3D Minicomp: Zombie All-Stars: Voting Booth Now Open
ThatDon
11-11-2008, 12:44 AM
Voting is now open for the 3D Minicomp: Zombie All-Stars! Vote anytime between now and Friday, Nov. 14th midnightish.
Once again, this contest has a 'soft deadline', which means entries will continue to be submitted between now and the end of voting, with the advantage of those artists taking more time to polish their work, but at the disadvantage of possibly receiving less votes.
Regardless, voting itself is still as easy as it's always been. Just log in with 'remember me' checked, follow the link, and place your votes today!
There were a ton of great entries, follow the link and get your vote on!

My excuse is..my laptop kept shutting off randomly so it had to be returned to the factory before it's 1 year warranty expired in 6 days (I was lucky, even though it broke) so I couldn't do any 3d work till now. Not sure what don's excuse is.. but I bet it's lame:p

Yeah, interesting to see some "surprise" entries by people who never posted a single WIP. Oh, well, their loss...

Yah.. while I'm not a big fan of "surprise" entries the turn out for this comp was great. Fantastic effort everyone!

Expansion is not even out yet....
Does this mean that when WotlK hits, there are no more minicomps? :D
Some really great entries in there that made voting extra hard imho.
This mini-comp was/is great. :)

Good job everyone on finishing! Sadly I never got further with my ultra-low-poly SMB2 lineup, other than fixing some seams and proportions on the princess. I had already skinned her and tweaking the proportions screwed up the skin, and since I had absolutely no free time anyways, I didn't feel like reskinning her..
I'll definitely finish the other three sometime though!

Yeah I had a ton of fun with this competition, and as my first mini challenge I don't think it could have gone any better.
No matter what the outcome with who wins I got a decent portfolio peice out of it and learned a whole lot in the process. So its a win win situation for me.
Thanks a lot to ThatDon for getting this all together, and Seven, Walrus and Draxxuss for putting up with my newbie question and helping me along the way.

It was a fun competition. I like themed competitions based on Halloween or holidays in general. Next comp how bout a Christmas theme. Everyone did a great job and its nice to finish a comp in the Gameartisans forum this will be the first comp of many that I enter and finish Im sure.

surprise entries never usually do very well in the polls i've noticed.
people just don't like the idea of keeping your work a secret, it takes away from the 'community'.

Not to mention that surprise entries could often have benefitted from some helpful advice from one's peers along the way.
Some amount of participation is explicitly mentioned (and lack of it strongly discouraged) in the big Challenges. With so little at stake for the minis - they're almost strictly a growth opportunity - why isn't it required for them as well?

I could possibly see someone just trying to rush one out the day of. I know I've had some spontaneous moments, where the planets align, and I crank out an entire entry on the final day. The timeline being so short coupled with the low budgets can equate to people trying to do this. Plus, the mini-comps have typically been a little less regulated since they are more about the art and less about the contest.
I'm all for showing work though. IMO when you work in a vacuum, your art typically will be less awesome.

I can appreciate the challenge (and time-crunch necessities) of trying to do something in a short amount of time. But no one needs to post paragraphs about their work in progress. We're all artists here: The images can speak for themselves no matter what your native language is.

They have an image category, and this image can win the extra awards for texturing, modeling, lighting etc. It's a bit hard though because concept artists who are good with 3d can combine the two. So creating 3d only scenes are at a disadvantage unless a great deal of photoshop is used to enhance the final result.
Those cgtalk comps are insane.. they have so many people entering it gets kind of crazy... not to mention hard to get noticed and get feedback. I always like looking at the results, but haven't tried entering since the early ones.
Photoshop is king. They really focus a lot on post processing in that comp, which is fine and it fits as its more a film/media oriented 3d site. I'd much rather keep my time focused on these mini comps and the main comps here at gameartisans; its a much more personal and friendly atmosphere.
The thing I really loved about the DomWar III, is that even though it was big, we still had our own forums we could rely on for feedback. It was kind of nice.

11-13-2008, 04:58 PM
I have to respectfully disagree - i am a long-time veteran of the CGTalk challenges, and I've found it very easy to make friends and get a lot of good feedback from people on my work. Sure there are tons of entries, but a portion of these enter and then vanish. If you're not pulling the surprise entry thing we were talking about above, and if you're decent about giving feedback to others, there is always a large core group of people who are happy to also give you excellent input. I was on the CGSociety team for DWIII and the forums there were jam-packed too... but I still got plenty of feedback on my entry.
In fact, even though I'm a judge for the CGTalk challenge and am inelligible for any prizes, I will probably even do something for this contest, just because I like the theme and am sure I will get good feedback from folks... and I always like having some really finished pieces in my illustration portfolio.
Well I do have to say I read over the brief the night they put it up and it seems awesome.. I've always loved Steampunk stuff. I think if I didn't have so much going on, I'd be reeaally tempted to join up and give it a go. Maybe I could do something but keep it game art oriented. If anything for the folio piece. Maybe I just had a bad experience is all; it has been a few years. At the time I used 3DTotal all the time and was used to seeing the same familiar faces all the time.

Yeah, that's the thing with most forums, if you aren't a regular, people are most likely not going to comment on your work. It's understandable. In every comp, we see a lot of new people that either don't finish their entries, or disappear once the comp is over so putting in a lot of time to comment on new members' work is not very appealing for core members.
Btw, walrus... don't hit me for saying this, but you have Art Director written in your profile. You are more attractive to artists than an all you can eat meal at Ritz Carlton served by s--y women. Reminds me of my days at Cgsociety when Pascal Blanche posted on the forums. Everyone would talk with him:D For Segreto, it might be a little harder to make buddies and get comments.
it looks awsome, i'll dont know if i'm rdy for this kind of comps, but it should be a nice training for me, love the theme, i'll think about it...thanks for the link!

I have to agree with you Fred. The comments I've received on cgtalk are far fewer than comments on this forum primarily because when I was posting frequently on cgtalk I was still a student. However this is the part of my post that I agree with Mike, I never finished a cgtalk challenge. The reason was that I over extended myself. Being new to 3d, I didn't have any practical goals for my work. I didn't understand the effort involved. This kind of thing only comes with experience. Therefore, me trailing off removed the potential for me to improve.
So there's me adding stuff... yay!

Me I like to stick with smaller, more inviting forums like this one. I frequented the cgchat forums before coming here I also post on zbrush central sometimes. For me its about spending too much time on the computer I can barely keep up with all of the posts on this forum so if I were to be a member of many different forums I wouldn't have time to post and feel like I'm part of the community. I don't see how others do it.

I don't think you should be afraid to express yourself in English. I know it can be hard to understand all its idiosyncrasies because of all the rules we don't even follow, not to mention the slang. However, I don't think you'll find any criticisms of your speech. This is an art forum and I'm sure the census is that we generally want each other to grow and improve regardless of your native tongue. :)

In the past I have been mainly been a lurker of forums, had a good root around to see what people are chatting about, but rarely joined in myself. Unless i was inclined to do so. But i'm trying to become more active and get involved in the communitry
I don't know what it is but the larger forums can be quite daunting to try to join in on. I don't know but maybe its just me, but when you see forums full of amazing work, it can put you off posting your own work up.
GA seems like a friendly and smallish comunity to get involved in tho. :)

Yeah, I just began getting active here at GA for the zombie all stars mini competition and I was really surprised by how nice everyone is over here. I am mainly a polycount guy, and its not that they are mean over there, they just give you a lot of tough love I guess you could say.
I find the positive atmosphere over here really refreshing though, and I think I will definitely stick around and bounce between the two forums now. Maybe a mix of the two is the perfect fit for me.

Yeah, you're right about English dude. Some members here shy to speak english, same like me.
But, i chose to speak although my english is bad than i just keep silent. We better try than do nothing. Here is CG forum, not a language forum that discuss all about language. We here discuss and talk about CG. So, it doesn't matter if some of our words wrong grammar in english. :D
Yeah, i feel same like u guys. I found really friendly atmosphere here.
I ever join in many cg forums like CGSociety, ConceptArt, GFXArtist, Deviantart, Indocg and GameArtisans. But, members of GA forum more friendly and want to help me with advise, suggestion and critic. So i got much improvement here than i got from other forum. Not trying to say this forum better than that forum. But this is the fact that i feel and that i got.
I still remember 1st time i join this forum when my friend, xvampire (Also GA member) recommended to join Naruto Challenge. Than i start loving this forum. With fredh a really busy founder and moderator here. And blankslatejoe and ThatDon are nice person too. :D

Yes WhiteGuardian, I am agree with you.
This is a really friendly place. In most of the forum that I have been subscribed I always keep on silence, but here the people are really friendly, I mean it.
I think the most cool thing about this place are the challenges, cause here the challenges are based on things that as videogamer you enjoy at all!.
In other forums you can see cool challenges based in general artist topics, but here, you can enjoy and get fun with the challenges cause is immersed in our fan-videogame-side, that I guess is the main inspiration/reason for ours to want to be in the Industry.
I really like this challenge also, and Good Luck to all the participants. This is the second challenge that I wanted to be and I didn't
