Hello everyone!
Given how successful the 2d and 3d minis have been here on GA, we're excited to get a third mini up and running--one purely devoted to high res SCULPTING. That's right, no low poly, no normal maps, no textures--these minis will be focused only on the actual art of digital sculpting.

To kick us off, I figured a fairly loose theme would be fun. That said...

SCULPTING MINI COMP#1 : MUD MONSTERS
http://30lives.com/gaorg/SCULPTminicomp1.jpg

Theme: Mud Monsters

Brief:
Make a mud monster using zbrush or mudbox or another's package's sculpting toolset. What a 'mud monster' is is up to you...given most sculpting tools everything I tend to make looks like a mud monster anyway...so this should be easy!
You can make an entire body, or just the head if you'd like, just make it cool!

-For this mini you may create your own base mesh in 3d or in zpsheres, etc.

-You are NOT restricted to only using sculpting tools (you can use 3d max/maya's normal tools if need be for pieces--just keep it high res).

-Base, background are optional

-color/textures are NOT allowed for this mini--let's focus on just the modeling

It's strongly strongly STRONGLY encouraged that you post progress images as replies this thread. We're not forcing everyone to yet, but half of the point of these minis are to help build up the community. If you're posting last minute without at least saying hello, then you're missing all the fun! Stop lurking!

Please do not make a new thread for your entry. Keep all w.i.p shots in this specific thread.

Final Submission:

Submit one image, 1000x1000 pixels or less. This image should include a 'final Mud Monster image' (required), and any preliminary work (sketches) you wish to show (optional).

You can submit your finals here:
http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/minis/join_sculpting.html

Prizes:
1st place:
- 1 new forum and gallery award icon for mini challenges
- 1 point towards raising your overal game, elite, and/or master rating
on gameartisans

2nd place:
- 1 new forum and gallery award icon for mini challenges
- 1/2 point towards raising your overal game, elite, and/or master
rating on gameartisans

3rd place:
- 1 new forum and gallery award icon for mini challenges
- .25 points towards raising your overal game, elite, and/or master rating on gameartisans

Public Voting:
All Winners are chosen through a public voting system. Only GA.org
members may vote.

Soft Deadline: Voting starts Tuesday November 25th, around 11:59pm! Goodluck!

LOL, I always thought the golden rule of digital sculpting was to avoid the "muddy" look, this should prove to be a very good challenge for all.

Good luck everyone.

nice concept zann

Draxxuss, looking awesome; good idea as well. Can't wait to see what you have in mind for the "mud" monster..

quick question.. are we able to render this out with AO or GI in our 3d program of choice or should we just post a screen grab of the model for our final submission? I just want to make sure I'm on the same page as everyone else, because I can see some people using fancy materials in zbrush or mudbox or making a really clean clay render in max or maya or something and other people not....

personally i would like to be able to render these out or use mudbox or zbrush materials but keep 'em gray or whatever.

Draxxuss
11-12-2008, 10:34 AM
I have a question about zbrush materials. Does anyone have a link to or can upload some really cool ones. Currently I have only the standard ones and no custom materials. I'd be grateful. Thanks.

Wynn
11-12-2008, 10:44 AM
Draxxuss, yeah there's a huuge thread over at zbrush central that has matcap libraries and stuff for download.

Zann, nice. It looks epic, is it meant to be huge?. If so you should consider having a tribal village being sucked up with it, and big craters where the libms are sucking up all the mud. the elongated head kind of looks like a tribal mask, that's why I suggest it. plus a mud village kind of makes sense..

I think AO bakes or advanced lighting setups are ok--light something so that it shows off your sculpting well. Just keep the model solid colored (no texture work or anything).

Zann: Awesome concept! Impressive stuff. :thumb:

fraglimit: Nice little 'insectoid' touch to the concept (placement of the eyes and legs).

Codeman: Ha! Reminds me somewhat of that delightfull movie "The Blob". :)

Continued a few thumbnails I started briefly during lunch.
Still doubting between nr 1 and 2 (upper right and lower left), as I like the idea of the mud-monster using wood, dead bark, and anything it can find to make itself move.
Trying for the 'friendly' melancholic monster look on this one. :) With that in mind, there's a good chance I'll continue with the upper right one.

Semantics really. Seeing as how it's untextured, it could all well be pudding, mud, poo, or sculpy. While the specifics differ I don't see it actually violating the spirit of the comp.

some sketches I've been working through.... The last one is what I think I'm going to go with. It's a mudslide that has wrecked a house. Out of the mud comes a mud monster who has features that was once part of the house including a pot bellied stove in his belly and its pipe from behind. Other pieces of furniture and other thingies I'd like to work in... a rocking chair, various pieces of wood, some sort of foliage, etc.

Maybe it will work better if you connect some of the top ones to the corresponding lower ones, so you get a few large strings that connect top to bottom?

Hi all,
this is the first thing that come in my mind when i heard about the mud monsta theme. as u can see, its a mud finger monsta. im trying to depict it. its a very rough sketch, i still have to figure out the fix form of that monsta before i try to make it in 3d.

Codeman: Great start! I find the mudstrings that go up against gravity (read: the lower teeth) a bit weird looking, but that's just me. ;)
Maybe it will work better if you connect some of the top ones to the corresponding lower ones, so you get a few large strings that connect top to bottom?

Thanks Maph. Great suggestion! I rebuilt my basemesh and added a string plus reduced the lower 'teeth' and then projected the details from before. I also modeled the entree. ;)

Comping a quick idea.
"White Collar Mud Man" (aka Mud Man Office Worker)

IDEA: Obese mud monster melts away in his cubicle on a hot summer day.

Not sure if I'll have much time over the weekend. Could be fun if I could steal a couple of hours.

Creating my little Mud Man Office worker's play set right now, as it'll affect his posing. Just a very quick hack out of the set piece in C4D. Haven't added props or decorated the set further. (Gonna leave lots of places for oozed or spattered mud.)

http://www.robertsanta.com/images/mudset01.jpg

Still playing around with poses for my middle management mud dude.

http://www.robertsanta.com/images/mudman02.jpg

I'm considering one of two poses.

1) Have him slumped over his desk with his face oozing into his keyboard and his muddy hand grasping his mouse. That's kinda what I'm playing with in the above ZB caps.

OR

2) Have him totally go apesh** his cubicle - stapler in hand (a'la Milton from "Office Space")

Haven't decided which yet. I'll play with the pose for #2 before I finalize the orientation of the cubicle walls.

Gonna sculpt him in the final pose instead of transposing.

Did some zBrush sketches for my entry:
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k300/bigjohn_014/MudMonster_WIP01.jpg

No clue which one I'm gonna go with. This is after I narrowed it down from some of the other ones. So I think I'll just keep going with all 3 and see what happens. These are just quick ones so I get all the stuff from my brain out.

Thanks. Only a little more than an of work hour in though. Still very rough.

What's that picture in your new avatar?

:) It's a screen cap from the "Smile Time" episode of "Angel" - the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spin-off. The main character, the vampire Angel, is transformed into a muppet in that episode. Thought it might make for a funny avatar - a goth looking muppet with a sword.

Smooth_Criminal: Liking the action pose, looking forward to more sculpting.

Maph: Great concept, looking forward to seeing the transition. :)

Fraglimit: That's certainly a beast you got going there hehe

lala: That topology looks pretty nice. Should sculpt with ease.

Draxxus: Concept looks pimpin :)

Cookepuss: That's hilarious

Warrior21: Oh man, I wouldn't wanna mess with that guy.

BigJohn: Those look pretty good, I really like the one that almost looks like a twister though, really captures that type of motion to me at least.

I'll get to some others i missed as the WIPS keep coming in. Dont want to take up too much screen lol. Keep up the good work fellas. :thumb:

Heres 2 shots of mine, sort of wanted to add a melancholy human element to it, yet still a monster by nature. A LOT of it is completely untouched, especially the back areas and hands. Just wanted to concentrate on the muddy consistency for the moment... Might melt the face more but its a fine line to walk. Not Sure. Crits/Ideas welcome.

here is a wip.

I really don't know if I'll finish this as the WoW mini may end up pulling me over there at the same time... AND work is really crazy this month... AND I have my 9 year wedding anniversary so I should really spend more time with Wifey... so many things so little time. :)

Didn't have much time today. Haven't started the sculpting or the prop design yet. Just playing around a bit with composition and blocking right now.

I'll start the sculpting tomorrow. I really have to strengthen that pose before I go to bed. IMHO, it still doesn't read strong enough from multiple angles yet. Plus, there's a little bit of a disco thing going on. :p I'll probably have to work it out in front of my video camera & then tweak it out back in ZB.

Either way, I should have the bulk of Sunday to work the key elements out and actually make him muddy. An hour here and an hour there...

BigJohn
11-16-2008, 12:09 AM
Warrior21, I really like yours. Are you keeping it as just a head? Cause I actually think you should.

Uberific, that's a real refreshing take on it. Not only is it a female, which most of ours aren't, but the snail thing is great.

Yozora, that's real solid. I love those tree stumps in it. Gives it a nice sense of scale. I may have to do something similar with mine. Only crit would be that it took me a while of looking at it to see that there's a head. The detail overall is pretty uniform and the face gets swallowed in them. I think maybe add more details to the face area to make it more pronounced, or maybe even tone back the rest of it. Good stuff though overall.

dprocissi, That's awesome. Everything about it is so.... muddy. Even with the red material you can totally tell what's going on.

Wim, keep it up man. That looks like it has some great potential.

Bryno, You got some nice detail there, but I think it's getting too noisy. You should probably pick like one or two areas of importance and have those contain more detail than the rest.

Smooth_Criminal, that's sweet. I love the whole comic-book hero/villain vibe.

As for my entry, I went further with the ones I had, but I totally hated all of them. So I did some more sketch sculpts and finally settled on this one:
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k300/bigjohn_014/MudMonster_WIP02.jpg

Still just a sketch, but I can "see" it already when it's finished. One problem I'm already foreseeing is that I want it to feel real huge, but I don't think that's gonna read properly as it is. I think maybe I'll model some trees and foliage in studio max and bring those in and scatter a bunch of real tiny ones on his top. But I don't know if that's cool for this mini, using all sorts of subtools.

Anyways, good work everyone. Some real inspiring stuff here.

Cheers :mugs:

cookepuss - That is one muscular butt on your mud man!
Draxxuss - I hope you find time to complete this. It is looking cool.
BigJohn - very unusual - i look forward to seeing more

Bryno - good start. I agree that tightening might make it clearer.
Smooth_Criminal - another dynamic pose.Im really liking the face - kind of Hulkish

Uberiffic: thanks, man. Looking good ;)
wim: cool concept and basemesh.
Smooth_Criminal: cheers! Interesting critter you've got there, but it's missing a lot of dynamism and power. A bunch of mud splatters would do this a world of good I reckon. ;)
Draxxuss: Ha! Way cool, man!
cookepuss: cool idea, and great start. :)

Updated concept somewhat (read: finished the line-art, didn't bother with coloring). And built the basemesh. Still need to add a couple of branches and a wee bird, but that shouldn't take long. :)

Right, gonna try and get this done - i'm deadly busy but i'll do my best.

Aiming for some variant of a horse mud monster. Going for the idea of mud taking on the living qualities of things that died in it, so some horse aspects, bit of skeleton possibly a mud rider on its back. Slightly ambitionous but there you go.

SuPa-: Thanks, appreciate it. :)
Codeman: Cheers! Thanks for the kind words, and I must say, that's one heck of a finish you did there! I absolutely love the little scene, really cool.
There's a lot of dynamic motion in the mud, and I think that's what's seriously selling your entry. :thumb: Excellent job!
wim: Thanks. ;) If I may do a tiny suggestion. I think if you tilt the the right lower 'arm' a bit more (so it almost reaches 90°), it will give a good sense of gravity. Mud is kinda liquidy, and the way the arms are bent are implying we're seeing a more rubbery material.
The facial expression is really cool though. :) Reminds me of a Roman Dirge character.
dprocissi: Thanks. :) Good job so far, the only thing I'd like to point out, is that while the dynamic motion of the mud is top notch, you're lacking a fair bit of gravitational pull in the long strings connecting those body parts. Which implies a more solid yet flexible material then mud. Molten plastic or rubber for example.
Marc Wakefield: How are the volumetric tools in 3DCoat treating you? I've been meaning to buy 3DCoat for a while now, and now with those volumetric sculpting tools announced, it's a must have. But is it somewhat performant for most computers?
I do believe volumetric sculpting is the future in digital sculpting. ;)

dprocissi
11-16-2008, 04:28 PM
I totally agree with that but I thought it looked cool. For the sake of make believe he is kind of morphing into mud muffin from which he came and I have not seen that happen before so maybe he has some elastic abbilities as well that we dont know about. uh yeah, thats it. lol:)

blankslatejoe
11-16-2008, 06:49 PM
davidj - youre not late at all--there's still over a week left :) Cool sketch, but right now he's looking a little sad/scared/desperate instead of monster-y. I'd focus on making the face look meaner when you get to sculpting; perhaps with deeper eye sockets and a more furrowed browline.

wim - pretty cool, i love the placement of the eyes! he is looking a little plasticine at the moment. I think you could get away from that by having more than one 'hole' in him--like having a line of mud that cuts that center hole in half, or drips a little down into it, or having other, smaller holes in various places on his body.

codeman - great work, no crits from me--I like how the hand is not too overdone-its a great visual reward when you notice it sticking out of the mouth.

dprocissi - nice job on keeping it looking dynamic. I really get a sense of sludge. I think the face could use some more definition/high res stamps on it--right now my eyes drift to his back, instead of to the monsters face.

freakmean - hah, this guy is pretty fun looking. Nice touch with keeping the eyes smoother. I'd get some more high level detail in the face and hands! Also, surround him with some splatters!

ah-lex -- nice idea! the skull will be a nice touch

maph - great idea! I was hoping someone would throw some roots/tree stuff in there. I think right now his head is a little too symmetrical/cylindrical--though its just the basemesh, so i imagine that'll get some attention in the sculpt.

Cooke - good to see you here in the minis! Im liking the set idea a lot! Right now the guy looks a little oversculpting in some places--the back and butt in particular. It gives him more a stone/marble statue look in that area rather than mud. Also, I think some alphas on your brushes might give the guy some more texture. It's coming along well though!

David-J
11-16-2008, 07:02 PM
Thanks blankslatejoe.

I agree, hehehe, the second sketch that I did it's looking like he is being scared by a monster instead of it being the one who scares people. I will work on that on the sculpt.

BTW. Codeman, your entry looks awesome, love all the detail around it.

here is my almost finished base mesh. I am doing it symmetrical T pose but I will change it in Zbrush with transpose.

Cheers and I love this fun, free competition.

HEy im trying not to lurk around. I made this base mesh 2days ago. Its changed a little from the concept. First the back legs instead of dragging a long are more insect like and the spikes on the back make an interesting shape but are unlikey to be made of mud. I think i'll use some type of man made stuctures.. i have an idea in mind but i need to do some tests 1st

Good stuff everyone. Draxxuss, that came out pretty well.

Here's what I'm up to:
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k300/bigjohn_014/MudMonster_WIP03.jpg

I'm having problems communicating scale. It seems like that whole thing could be pretty small, but I want it to come across as quite huge... I'll figure it out eventually.

I thought I'd jump in and play, this looks like a fun exercise in sculpting. My little mudman is drying up, that nasty old tree is hogging all the moisture.

I'm having problems communicating scale. It seems like that whole thing could be pretty small, but I want it to come across as quite huge... I'll figure it out eventually.

Try adding an external scale element, like a human, a house, a tree, heck, even a desk would do the trick.
Also, try implementing some nitty gritty (and most importantly) recognisable debris in to the mud, if you've got a chimney sticking out of there (to give an example) you'll immediatly have a sense of scale.
Also, big things have bigger gravitational pull than smaller things, if you're doing a huge mud monster, you ought to have really big 'folds' of mud with a fair amount of smaller ones as secondary folds, imho ofcourse. ;)

dprocissi: Well, if you put it like that. Who am I to judge your character's background, eh? :)
Looking forward to see your next updates.
blankslatejoe: True, true, and I couldn't agree more. I like the frontal silhouette, but the head is indeed too symmetrical at this point. But since I'll be sculpting without symmetry most of the time, that will fix itself. :D
At least, I hope it will.
Bertmac: Thanks. :) Interesting critter you've got there, although you might want to spend a bit more time on optimizing your poly-distribution if that's important to you. Evenly spaced quads are really important in digital sculpting imho.

First of all,I'm glad to come here and I am fond of this website.Well,my little English made me hard to undersand the ideas and statements of others .I have to look up the dictionary then translate them into my own language one by one.when I want to express my ideas also look up the English words in the dictionary and just put them together.I'm sorry for my poor English .However, I'll try my best to do it well.I hope we'll get on well with each other and our works.
The concept of my designing is:a Tode who is living in the mud.It not a body of flesh and blood but mixed stone and mud.In order to make my character lovely (I tend to make character not very fearful or ugly.)I put its eyes a little bit closer, and added several irregular fangs.I'm just at the beginner stage of Zbrush.I don't know whether I will be able to reach the goal of my imagination.I will send screenshorts of the modal as soon as possible.
It's the sculpture's progress at present.

I kind of finished the base mesh, maybe I'll add some more scrap later, but this will do just fine. :)
And for the sheer laugh of it, I've included the silhouettes.

I do believe it's time to get sculpting. :)

maph, freaking awesome!
bigjohn, about the scale issue, it seems like he is a little larger than a normal person. considering those heads stuck to him. if you want to make him look huge, make some larger objects sticking out of him (cars, doors, street lights)
draxxuss, sweet! love the bathroom.
wim, awesome concept man! cant wait to see what you come up with it.

BigJohn: Ur sculpt has unique design on it :) really love that.
Bertmac: Ur sculpt remind me of bioshock character :P
Codeman: Man you're fast, and the result came out impressive! really love your work.

The rest are progressing very well too, I'm so motivated in this forum :D

So, I don't really like the previous concept, so I changed again into something simple. I'm trying to achieve something cute yet freaky... Any comments and critique would be helpful before I start sculpting it tomorrow.

Thank you guys.

That looks really cool. If you want a more muddy look, you might consider adding more of a dripping/sagging effect to it. Right now it is very tight and almost reminds me of the T3 coming off the floor in T2.

It looks like you might be using ZBrush. I found that the snakehook and inflate did a good job.

MudMon

Here's the start of my attempt, about 60mins of doodling in...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y31/Spook77/MudMon.jpg

The basic premise is that its supposed to be emerging from a pot (not built yet!) of cosmetic mud. (sort of got the idea from the classic blood testing scene from John Carpenters 'The Thing'.:))

Onto the refining, hopefully have enough free time to finish it.

Elte - Thanks! - I think you got freaky with that painting
chinni - good start on the basemesh
Maph - These are great. I'm looking forward to seeing some sculpting though.
BigJohn - looking very unique. almost victorian to me for some reason. I think some easily recognizable objects scaled very smale would sell the illusion quickly.
swalez - looks good. my only crit is the lower jaw seems kind of squared of or something. Maybe it could be softened?
Orb - very cool. Ary you also going to model the uplifted tentacles in the base mesh or just sculpt those out?
commador - liking the elongnated fingers.
pixelmitherer - looking forward to seeing this develop.
jolo88 - Cool basemesh
Bertmac - reminds me of a demonic 'where the wilds things are' like it.
Draxxuss - Really cool. Kind of has a totem pole vibe.
prototyp3 - awesome base - i instantly thought of son of Godzilla
lala0323 - your English is very good. Your sculpture is coming along well. I am having a hard time making the face out now, but that might just be the render.
David-J - Looking forward to seeing this evolve beyond the basemesh.

In case anyone is interested, I finished converting my Mudster into a game character. Here is a sample of how it came out. Not sure if I will texture it or leave it as a pure sculpt. the entire piece (sans grass planes) is 6100 tris. Kind of high but I had no budget so I went big.

LOL. I never played that game, but it looks fun.

I think now that I look at my Mudster my biggest subconcious influence was the original Jaws poster. I mean now that I study it I see pure great white shark lines and ocean waves. Weird. Not intentional, but I study the shapes of things and file them in the noggin.

Codeman, your modely its just amazing, the material is from ZB or a matcap you made??,

I looked through a number of finishes for my model, but I really liked the one on ZBrush forum (links earlier in this thread) called Old Shiny Skull
(or something like that).

As far as time on this project, from my initial concept to the final game model (sans textures) I spent about 38 hours. Not to fast in my book, but I knew I had to get the UVs nailed before I continued as this was critical to a successful game import. My muse took over and the long days blew by. I am fortunate to be in a position for the next few months to work intensley on improving my skills in hopes of landing a contract or full time gaming job. This is super important to me and this entry is part of that journey.

elte - good start. reminds me of an evil juju candy right now!
joecyriac - interesting base mesh. cant wait to see what becomes of the head.

Cheers!

C&C still welcome

@ Yinn - Don't know but i seem to like those blobs of mud, they look cool

@ Zann - thanks for being slow ,now i am not the only one :inocent:

@ chinni - Now that it is in Zbrush, it starts looking real cool. I hope you can get some movement in there so that it looks more dynamic if that is what you want.

@ BigJohn - nice progress man, and yes i like those trees on top, they make him nice and big. But maybe now those faces on the side don't look that good anymore eeeeh i mean did he swallow giants. or should i see it differently.

@ Codeman - wow didn't see that for a long time, but yeah i see what you mean
And thanks for the toolbrush tips, i did help me

Just managed to get 20 minutes in after work and i'm starting to get somewhere. The neck's total gash and the cheek needs work but i'm going to be making it look muddy anyway and embedding some bits of bone and skull. @Maph I cant wait to see more. The silhouette is good I think.
@bertmac, toony guy, cool, but dont overkill the render with radiosity. Lower the light amount. but there is potentual in it.

For my work. Sad that many of the details get lost ones you get out of Zbrush. I wanted to combine the more hardcore modeling with Z, to see if it would be nice.
I still have to tweak the Zmodel, but I was to tired today.

Thanks for the kind words and you're right with the cloth look on the right hand. But then again, as you can see, I haven't really bothered with the entire right side up until now. :D
Lunch breaks are way too short. :(

If I can give any tips at all, it's these (mind you, anyone involved with sculpting - be it digital or not - will probably say this).
1. Order of forms: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. Especially important in this case (read: mud), because too much secondary and tertiary forms will break the primary ones, and you'll lose the underlying structure and flow.
And flow is of utmost importance in liquidy materials, or cloth for that matter.
A good way to test if your forms are in place, is to squint your eyes and look at your work. If you can't make out what it's supposed to be, the forms are foobar.
This also applies to the silhouette.
2. Gravity and weight: You need to be able to feel gravity pushing the mud down and cause dripping. Weight (bulged out surfaces for instance) plays a heavy part of defining scale and believeability of the drip.
The more it weighs, the longer the drip will be and the more mud there'll be cluttered up at the end.
3. Silhouette: I suppose I don't need to go further on this one? A good silhouette can make a crappy character look good. ;)
Ye olde squinting technique applies here as well

As for technical tips, I just sculpt using what I got, no stamps up until now, layering strokes on each other untill I see what I like and then sculpt away some excess bulgieness to get that dripping look.
Or smearing downwards and then bulgeing the edges outwards is also a good start imho. :)

This is my first comp on this site and im thoroughly enjoying it.

Codeman: Hey thanx for the mention you really went to town with that sculpt + how make the grass is it polys.
Seven: Luv the concept on the top right i hope you havent given up on it.
Maph: Amazing concept im sure the finished model will be jaw dropping.
Joboba rock: wake up i want to see the mini mud guy.
Draxxuss: Thats the most detailed toliet i've ever seen and i really like the silhouette that was grabbing the rail.
Dprocissi: Great pose the idea of sticky mud is great.
Swales: i like the idea of the tenacle but it would be kool to have a bigger splash.

I decided to avoid the manmade structures and use hardened mud to make the spikes and bone like claws. This is how far i got yesterday before z-brush decided to crash on me. Im trying to made a wet and mid dry side to the creature at the moment copying this detail back on. (only in 3 divisions at mo from a base mesh of 666 polys which must be lucky).

Oh and the spikes appear darker on this image because i have the creature selected in the subobject menu.

Maph: its a perfect reconstruction of the illustration, nice :D
Draxxus: Quick call the plumber! :P Great job on the finish man.
Codeman: Damn dude, looks great! The render looks slick. Grats on the finish.
Bertmac: Those renders and silhouettes look nice and clean, great character design.
Elte: love that expression, although a little creepy. :D but thats a good thing.
Yinn: so squishy yet so deadly :P its pretty cool.
Wim: I like what you did with the debris and stuff inside the body.
Commador: the small addition of the texture enhanced it greatly, but maybe hes a little too smooth around the stomach? Overall, a nice WIP so far.
Miezis: A little bit low res at the moment but i see thats because you're starting to get the shapes going, looking forward to details as it begins to grow.

Phew. So many good entries, almost can't keep up.

Thx uberific.
@commander. I like the way there is motion in the image. Maybe you could try some more and different textures. good work so far.
@miezis. Indeed its still a bit to lowpoly to see what you try to bring. The general shape is nice to work on. The big mouth is cool.

jolo88: Thanks. :)
wim: The scale relations are much better. Although I think a bit of his silhouette got ruined, as he appeared a lot bigger at first, and his forms stood out. Now I can't stop but think that the trash he's carrying around is diverting my attention from what should be the focus, being the monster itself. But that's just me. :)
I think you've got a great thing going on with this one, so keep it up. :thumb:
Uberific: Thanks, man. ;)

Anyhoot, finished with the basic shapes. So it's off to detailing and the wood, but the latter really shouldn't take long.
And oh yeah, I should put some scales elements in this scene.

I am very much looking forward to seeing all these entries in their final renders. Should be quite cool.

Maph - Looking cool. Love the saggy man boobs!
nemoriko - good start on the BaseMesh
commador - Nice motion, brings to mine 'Enenmy Mine' in the head area.
wim - Better proportions on your guy. Did you model all the little pieces?

I know this is a bit off topic, but I threw some paint on the game model version of my entry and thought I would share. I might do some spec maps as well.

Wim - those are cool. I wondered if you pulled them from the mesh or they were part of the base or subtools.

Hi everyone,
There are a lot of good cute monsters.
I present mine. This one is used by us in bath mud, he 's cleaning our skin, and prefere to work on woman skin! I don't know why :inocent:

hey bloody, nice pose, wish I was the monster!

Yes it's a lucky monster, but he's not having fun! He's working ;)

So this is my beginning :

blood -wow, what a kooky idea. I feel like the mud monster is a little too thin around the base right now--particular in the front.

wim - great angle and shot. nice idea to place the streetlight so it intersects the mudmonster's cavity.

nemoriko - fun! now tessellate it and move on to sculpting!

blankslatejoe
11-22-2008, 12:06 PM
maph -- he's coming a long great--he's got a great sense of weight/heaviness to him

commador - pretty good, but I think you might be getting to the highlevel texturing a bit quick. A lot of those little cracks are things you can throw in at the very end. You've got the big shaped bumps and the tiny texture, but get some more mid-range bumps/shapes in there too

miezis - great start, i love how you can pick out random bits of anatomy, like the forearms and thumbs and tongue, but a lot of it is still muddy. refine it a bit more!

animsen - interesting concept...i'm not quite sure what is going on on the top..it's a bit hard to make out. Definitely looks big though--let's see it in 3d!

machuca - really fun proportions! I like how thin he is!

Codeman: Very impressed with the texture and the game model. Mudster looks super.
Maph: That's some great sculpting. I like the clay details a lot. Fantastic work.
Commador: Nice pose, looking forward to the finished sculpt.
missingman: That"s a great sculpt so far. Keep going!
swalez: Yeah good catch. I looked at the Abomination as a reference.

Here's another update on the monster... Been working on more details, added more features.

Any feedback would be most welcome. This is turning out to be a really fun comp!

Thanks blanks,I wanted to put some dof into it, but it was just to present the small objects. And wanted to play a bit with some composition.
@joe: nice action in the monster, I see the hand is cut off? You allready had it in the previous update, some problems with you're mesh or you did it on purpose?

HEy guys/gals

This comp has been great fun and im so glad there is a place online where ppl can give their work a purpose and drive off each others inspiration.

Hey this is what i ended up with next time i will have to think more about pose. I was afraid that i put to much detail on the model and it would be difficult to see the full result. When i submit the final pic i'll put on a few more angles the only problem im having is the mud colour hides a lot of the smaller touches. ahwell i hope you like it

I cant wait to see the final submissions

Not sure at this point if its going well, the horse bits fine but it needs more of a flow and weight to the mud, also needs some bits of mud hanging off, ill probably do it in zspheres. Any crits?

Codeman: Cheers. Looking great with the textures there. ;)
Bloody Joy: He looks like he's having a good time. :D
blankslatejoe: Thanks. :) I spent quite some time trying to get the weight sort of right. It's still off in some places; but hey, deadlines, deadlines. :D
joecyriac: Thank you. :) Cool looking face, reminds me of pumpkinhead. :)

Anyhoot, I'm about to upload my final submission, but I'm doubting which version I'll use. I like both of these silhouettes a lot and I really can't decide. The first one really emphasizes his size but frontal views are kind of boring.
The second one is much more appealing silhouette wise imho, and shows off more details and spiffy parts. But with the cost of a decreased sense of scale I'm afraid.
But here are both for now. :)

freakman16 : Love your design, cute! I prefer the first material setting for muddy look. Congrats for reaching the goal line :)
maph: I personally like the second one, but if I were you I will darken to background or make the color contrast so the main object stands out.. That's one nice artwork! congratulations on finishing
ah-lex: If you're rushing for deadline, I suggest just focus on the head, or maybe make the neck melted or something like that? just 2 cents
jolo88: your work reminds me of Sand king in DoTA :P congratulations on finishing.
miezis: Nice design, looking forward to get it finished.
joecyriac:Wow that's looking cool.. wish to see more update. what's that spikey thing supposed to be?
bloody joy: That's one bloody monster!
wim: Great angle and composition.
Codeman: Man you're way too hardworking LOL. I wish u share how u get so motivated.
machuca: Good start, looking forward for more update.
animsen: Great concept, wish to see 3d sculpt.
comador: Looking good so far.
nemoriko: Nice basemesh, Is he mike in monster, inc in mud? lol.

Here's my latest update before final tweaking for Tuesday submission. I plan to add crack/drier mud on the lower part of the body to create more variations. What do you think? Any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

joecyriac -Thanks! I am loving your muscular mud man. the vein/drip is cool.
Maph - You are welocme. You entry is Way cool! It came out very well. You going to paint it?
freakmean16 - Cute little 'muddy' there. In the image I posted that is a screen capture of the Maya realtime preview window - not a render. I will pull into U3 one of these days.
elte LOL totally brings to mind Sigmund the Sea Monster from my youth (american tv show) and FYI my motivation comes from my passion for this stuff. Simple as that. Oh yeah and lots of coffee - I am in Seattle after all.
ah_lex - Loking good. My only crit is that the top part is a bit too defined while the bottom part is a bit too loose. To me there is a tiny disconnect. I also eagerly look forward to the decay and bones you mentioned.
jolo88 - Looks like one of those creepy critters you see under an electron microscope, especially with the material you used.
miezis - good progress, I look forward to more defintion in this one.
