Theme:
Remote Robots
Brief:
Are you ready to create some quick and easy game art!? In our first ever 3d mini challenge on gameartisans.org, we are looking for some original, cool and very creative Remote Robots. These robots should be small, movable and multitask capable. Whether you make yours cute or seriously army-like, the choice is up to you. We don't need to see the person behind the controls, but we do need to see the Robot, its toys if any, and maybe the floor it is standing/rolling/hovering on. Please do not make a new thread for your entry. Keep all w.i.p shots in this specific thread.
Good Luck and may the best robot win!
The Specs:
- 500 polies maximum
- 1x512 diffuse,
- Optional bonus maps: 1x512 spec, 1x512 normal, 1x512 transparency, 1x512 glow
- Cords that lead to a remote control do not count towards your 500 polygon limit. This cord can only be a simple straight black electric cord. Nothing fancy.
Final Submission:
Once this challenge is complete, you will be given a link to where you can upload your single final 1000 x 1000 image
Prizes:
1st place:
- 1 book from Amazon.com (up to $30 value)

For Finals, well, it's still being programmed. Here is a template of the form you will use:
http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/mini/characters.htm
It will be extremely simple. In the end, everyone's art will be displayed in thumbnail format in a page similar to the standard comp's view entries (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/competitions/2/view_entries.php) page.

Given the theme of the comp you can really let your imagination run wild, it should make for some very interesting models. Good luck and have fun with it everyone!:thumb:

Once quick question: When you say "500 polies maximum" you mean triangles or polygons?
Thanks

Make sure you thicken up the middle pivot on it, it's a bit thin at the moment and doesn't look to stable. Keep it up _Vincento_!

PS: On you next update post some wires if you can so e can get a better read on the mesh construction.:)

Here are some sketches I did on the bus. I will personally take a shot on the one at the bottom. If anyone is interested, if you fancy something in here, feel free to use it. You can change it any which way you choose, or just leave it as is.
http://www.artbyfh.org/Artwork/misc_3d/mini/1/sketches_01.jpg
A model like this should take 3 days max in a company. Since we have a week, it shouldn't be a problem:D If anyone needs any help, feel free to pm me. After all, I am one of the 3 GameArtisans big brothers:D
Good luck
ps, oh, btw, before someone mentions it, yes, the one I am doing is similar to an old model I did for 3dtotal. However, this one will be a game model, it will be 500 polies, and it will be a robot this time. This should be different enough:D

andrei313 --> Yup, sure man, go ahead. That one is a little bit round on the back. I tried to compensate by giving him no real legs so he basically only has feet:p I hope 500 polies is enough. Good Luck

Thanks a lot. What you said got me thinking. I started modeling and didn't rally know how to fill the inside, solve the connection of the feet problem and stay under the 500 limit... then I just though of something that can solve all those problems and probably look cool :) Since he's pretty round it looks like he's protecting something inside... that's where the engine should be, so he has a huge ball of electricity power that acts as a magnetic field keeping him together. Right now the back would be his week spot :) but he's very flexible even if he looks heavy so he can handle it :)
Obviously I'm over the limit and I'll have to add a lot more planes since he's going to be glowing a lot :) but I'm sure I can bring it down to 500 with no problems. I can cut a lot from that sphere too, maybe even replace it with some intersecting planes.
I'll keep it simple but I'm still thinking if I want to change one of the weapons to be different.
Any suggestion? Thanks.

08-06-2007, 07:23 AM
Thatdon --> That was quick:eek: Really nice job there. You got everything spot on.
andrei --> The ball in the center is a cool idea. Yeah, I agree, to make it work, you might have to use a lot of planes. Perhaps even make the back layers of planes so it looks like armor on top of armor. Besides this, nice start man.
andrei313
08-06-2007, 08:08 AM
Thanks. I don't want to over do it because I usually get lost in details and don't get to finish so I'll stop here with the model... and unwrap it. Textures will come tomorrow :)
The back is still not protected... I'd rather leave it like this, I might complicate it too much with more planes in that area and I'm not sure if it will be worth it... especially since I need o cut tris from other parts and add them there.
It wasn't mentioned in the Specs is we can have 2 sided materials but I'm guessing it isn't allowed since it would double the polycount so I cloned my planes and flipped them just to be sure. Hope you like it.

ThatDon : good job so far. I think you could put a single eye if you ever need a bit more tris. He looks better from the side. Maybe you should work on the front and back view a bit more.
Andrei313 : good job too, nothing to crit. You could remove the middle edge of the top part to save tris if needed. Could be used to add details to the guns or the back pack.
Antimagic : Good job, looks like a megaman monster or something :).
Vincento : Good job too, but the middle pivot still looks weak.

Alright, I'm taking a stab at this one. Here's a quick little turn around I did of a something I've got rolling around in my head. Just a little floating doohicky with a funky antenna on his head. It looks a little over zealous right now, but I'm gonna make it work... I swear I will.

Here it is with the color scheme I think I'll go for.
FredH
08-07-2007, 02:16 AM
rawk777 --> Nice work man. It came out looking just like the concept. The addition of a side antenna was a great touch.
Bbox85 --> Ahh, you are going for more details by using planes for the tentecles... Nice idea. The zero arms and zero legs will give you lots of polies to make him round. I hope for the bottom, you will make it glow like the hover pads that make the hover ships fly in the movie, The Matrix.
Vincento --> Nice start, but I wonder if it would look better if you increased the width of the wheels by x2. Right now, from head to toes, he has the same width. By making the wheels 2 times wider, this would break this lined up look. Also, if you have extra polies, maybe you can use them to add more wires in the middle (the area that joins his body with his feet). That area looks extremely thin. Besides this, everything is shaping up nicely. Keep up the good work:)

The robot you have is sporting some great features there miezis, I'm digging the razor sharp feel to it. One thing you may or may not want to try is having his limbs connected by pulsating electricity, you can do thing effect with an alpha, just my 2 cents!:thumb:

andrei313 --> Putting in tanks wheels was a genius idea:thumb: I think if you did a search for tanks, (http://images.google.ca/images?gbv=2&svnum=10&hl=en&q=tanks+treads)you can find some really good copy and paste reference for your treads.
Vincento --> ahh, you were already on it. Good good. Yup, this is much better! Next, don't be afraid to tilt his back, his head, and his wires a bit. Right now, it looks like he has an extremely straight and stiff posture. Why not play around with it some more and see what happens if you make him a hunchback (body leans forward a lot and head/neck tilts backward to compensate for forward body) or something. Otherwise, keep up the good work:)
miezis --> A chrome style eh? ... this will be interesting and unique. Looking forward to seeing how you finish this one.

Hi this is the first contest on this site for me I love all the work on this site and I am looking forward to more but enough with the sucking up here is W.i.p so far on the Mini Robot i changed it up a little from the concept i got ride of the third leg and went for more of a segway look and i move the arms but it was for the better the Poly count was 482.

08-07-2007, 04:12 PM
Scjohnson5551 --> Welcome to GA.org:) You came up with a very nice design here. Everything balances very well and I really like the head area. This is going to be a very cool little bot when it's done. No real crits other than saying... keep doing what you are doing. It's looking great.

andrei313: Hey, andrei313 you can keep your texturing fairly simple and go with the mega man look as seen in the image below. I’d use some soft shading and well positioned highlights to really make it pop.

08-08-2007, 01:18 AM
well here's what i'm up to so far i've just finished the blocking in, im going to give it a bird feel, all though after looking at the pick for a while i'm starting to see things, like where the arrow points it's starting to look like a mouth??
just a screen grab
FredH
08-08-2007, 02:30 AM
Shadowbreeze --> Nah, that's not a mouth. What you have already looks great. I see that you connected his arm to his body. I am guessing this is so that you can normal map him. If yes, maybe you can join his feet with his lower legs. This will let you come up with something cool in the normal map as well. Otherwise, nice stuff man. So far, it's looking just like the concept.
ThatDon --> Wow, you really went crazy with that one. The two new versions both look better than your old version. Except for maybe one thing. I don't really fancy the large legs. If you kept them thin (same thickness as your old model), I wonder if this would make your topheavy part look even better. Right now, I see big everything. Variance could be cool, but it's up to you. REally like the whole hands setup btw:thumb:
andrei313
08-08-2007, 07:12 AM
Thanks Fred. I wasn't really thinking about tanks when I made the wheels, I noticed a lot of robots had those but you gave me an idea with that :D and although what Marcus suggested can work I decided to go with a WW2 look and turned him a little tank.
http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/6019/rrcz2.jpg
I feel that the weapons don't work anymore... I need to think of something more suited... like a cannon :)
As you can see I dropped the electricity thing... it wasn't working for me. Now the parts are floating and it's not realistic... but I don't mind, it works for me.
Another thing that I don't like is how the top part looks like. I think there's not a lot of UV space for that part and it looks blurry. I'll try to rearange the UVs, although all the parts have the same proportions I feel that the top part needs a little more because it's the first thing you see. depending how I'll texture it I might even mirror the UVs to double the textures space.
Yo mates, im back for tis mini comp :lucky:
Here is my "mini" robot, hope it pass the regulation

Kalango, Is the remote part of your bot's mesh? I do believe the cord is not considered part of your 500 polygon limit, so I think it is safe to assume that neither is the remote stick. For everything else, I really like it so far. If you have extra polygons from the remote, if it were me, I would put them into a thumb for each of his hands. He would really need these in order to lift or hold something.
Fred, As usual, you managed to make a few polygons look like a lot. Looking forward to seeing the textures.

Don't know if you will get it finished? You are like 80% done already:s You even have a nice presentation. Your little guy is so cool. Hope you will finish him. The steampunk styled colors really worked out for him. If you have any extra planes available, it would be cool to see you add in some clockwork gears with transparencies. And maybe make it more narrow. Right now, his lower half area is competing against his upper chest area because they are almost the same height and width (I am not counting the white panels that enclose his chest).

ThatDon: looks nice and all, but, and don't take this the wrong way, I know how sensative you are. But the feet from the first version hits the concept on the head. You add those feet and keep everything else the way it is, then you can start texturing. Then you can redeem yourself for not finishing the Lynn remake.

I'm someone who deals with metal surfaces all day and I have to take my hat off to you Zann! This is terrific work:) and if you didn't add a single pixel more to the texture it would rock but if you want to push it over the top I would add some subtle color variation. Areas that would benefit from this would be where the base of the Gatling gun starts and the bullet round begins, the same goes for the two main shafts holding the doors open as well. I love the clean look to it but some slight scuff marks would look cool towards the bottom, I wouldn't over do it though, keep it sexy;)! Sweet work man, I can't wait to see this with the normal and spec maps! Keep it up!

Cool, thanks for the input guys. Zann! incredible!
Really cool bot there zann. The clean textures really made those 500 polies look like a lot more.
BigToE, I think you chose a hard one there. What if you made the back legs more thin? They don't all have to be the same size. Big Front legs with thin back legs might be a nice contrast.

Damn, caught this a bit late... but gonna try to whip something up!
Zann: nice work on that bot. I like the fact that you thought about it's transformation (being a real one), and that's some great texture work, i can really "feel" that metal! Now all you need is some more work on the normal map!
BiG ToE: i saw Fred's concept, one of the more catchy ones (for me). I think the connective bits between the actual leg and the center ball could just be a cylinder, saving a few polies for other places, like maybe the leg. Also, maybe that center ball could connect with the main chassis via a "bicycle wheel" type of array, which could be just a tex with alpha channel.
Marcus Dublin
08-10-2007, 02:35 PM
Hey sinz I like the design overall but the head of the model doesn't capture the same feel as the concept. The front part seems thicker while it tapers towards the back in the drawing but the mesh seems to be in reverse. Same goes for the neck which comes across less sturdier than the concept. If you can I would give a second pass to the mesh to see if you can capture the spirit of the concept better. Aside from that nice going and I look forward to your updates!:)
Marcus
Sinz - I like the concept, but I think the model still needs a little work. Did you try only putting in one arm in front? Most of the bombots that are around today only need one arm to disarm a bomb. Maybe this would look good on yours? In loosing the other arms, this would free up a lot of polies for you to round everything up so that your bot matches your concept more. Otherwise, nice start! I am sure with a little more tweaking, he will be a very nice model:thumb:

shadowbreeze: I could see him running around the star wars universe as a little junk bot. Nice going on the textures but the one thing that stands out is the pixel ratio, it seems off to me. If it were me, I'd probably break up the image into several panels and show it's construction, different angles, and a beauty shot. But, it's realy up to you how you would like to present your final:)
gridlinked --> It's looking good so far. Just a thought, perhaps it would look cool if you made the 3 legs thinner. Everything looks like it has the same thickness. If you made the legs thinner, this would put more emphasis on the upper body.

Sorry I can't crit, I have too much to do, but Zann's is the best for the momment. Here is how far I went with the texture's diffuse map. I have 4-5 concepts drawings of the environnements it could be within.
I decided to go rusty because I wanted to do a map that had a lot of details. For the momment, the map is 100% self-illuminated, and is 1024.
Do you think I should bleed the rust in the white parts?
I don't know if I will have the time to do the normal maps. :s .
Thank you
Marcus Dublin
08-14-2007, 06:57 AM
Okay Rawk777 you may want to back up the truck a bit on the texture and give it a another pass because it's hurting the model. The rust you have is coming off way to unrealistic and the colors are off, first things first, ditch the rust completely and just concentrate on the metal work itself. You want to make sure that the metal is just right because everything else with fall into place after that, rust is an easy component to work in at the last stage. Here's a couple of guides to follow to get you on your way.
1. Never use 255 color on anything, the orange yellow color is the same intensity across the whole model and you used rust to break up the color which is incorrect.
2. Never use 100 white on anything, which is what you have on the white parts, to me it's not reading like metal, plastic, composite, etc.
3. Make sure the scale is correct, the scale of the rust and metal seems to belong to a Hummer rather than a small robot, make sure the biggest rust streak is never longer than one and a half the length of it's finger. Keep them small in some spots and slightly longer on other spots.
4. For metal work reference is your holly grail, make sure you grab some reference of small devices and machinery to see how wear and tear accumulates across the surface.
I could go even more in depth but it would be good to find some metal tutorials on the net to so see where you can improve it overall. The good thing is these changes with a little bit of work can be easy and fun. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll be happy to lend a hand.:)Good luck!

Vincento mentioned that once again, the submit finals button is broken. In this light, I will need to extend the deadline by one day:flag: Stay tuned for the announcement.
Scjohnson5551 --> I think the problem is that your background is pure white. This is making your entry seem more darker than it really is. Aside from that, I am not sure why, but I feel like he can use one more additional color somewhere. The red it too close to yellow, so there is nothing really that stands out. I am not sure which color you can use, or where you can put it, but if you have time, perhaps give something a try and see what happens. Good Luck and keep up the good work:)
_Vincento_ --> Hey! He turned out very well there. Good job on the tank wheels, but, if you have time, perhaps put in some shading in the inner section of the entire wheel section. Right now, it almost looks like the inner workings of the wheels are popping out on top of the treads. You really need to push that area back with shading. Otherwise, nice presentation man.

Much better Rawk :) Have you thought about adding some paneling / detail to other areas of the body other than the front torso? The head in particular is looking a bit sparse.
Here's my wip, still some stuff to do. I have to make a proper specular map (using the diff for that atm), add scratches, chipped paint, some dirt, and clean up the small border edge on the opacity map fins. I made my bot in line with punky sensibilities and the "Homeworld style", the pink stripes will be desaturated / chipped / dirtied up, only the visor and fins will remain glowy.
This is turning out better than what i hoped for, i too had my doubts if the detail would translate well on the normal and diff maps, but it did!

gridlinked --> Oh my, you managed to get that into a 512 sheet. My hat goes off to you man. Well done. Just some small things.. For his eye, does it have to be a grid? You have a lot of grids on the back already so perhaps a more solid glass eye or glowy eye or something could be cooler. The reason I say this is because right now, it looks a bit like a speaker phone rather than a viewing portal or something the bot can look through. For the hands, are the pointy tips really needed? They are the only thing pointy on the entire bot, so they stand out more than they should. If you simply removed them, or made them look more like a barreled ending, maybe they would fit in more naturally with the rest of the bot. Besides this, everything is looking good man. Congrats on getting everything on your sheets. I am really impressed.
Vincento --> Yup, that's much better now. If you didn't mirror the windshield, it would be cool if you had a strong white highlight somewhere on there. Additionally, if you have any extra polies, I would suggest putting in an additional logo or two on his chest. You can do this through the use of transparencies. I mention this because his chest looks a bit barren. Besides this, good work man.
Rawk777 --> Yes, I simply used a 512 sheet for dif, glow, transparent, normal etc. In order to get everything in, I mirrored everything. But I regret this a little for the face:flag: Hey, I see that yours came a long way there. I am glad you decided to lessen the rusty look. It's much better now. Like I mentioned with vincento, your bot is in need of a few logos or stickers of some kind. Perhaps around the wheel area, or chest. Aside from that, I am not sure if you have time, but if you could put in some shading or a ring of some kind around every joint (where something meets something), this could be cool. For example, where his torso connects with his bottom wheel, put in a black area on your sheet so that it looks like there is a hole where his torso would enter and connect with his wheel base. Then, put a metallic or small highlight around this blackness so that you enclose the blackness with a small ring. Do the same for his shoulders and neck/chest connections. Besides this, keep up the good work. You are making good progress.

http://www.imgplace.com/directory/dir762/1187291736.jpg
As for the pointy things, i've got no polies left, even if i remove them, i can't do anything good with the few remaining tris. The bot is 500 tris, the maximum hehe Plus, since he is a tattooer (spelling?), anything else other than a needle would look a bit funny.

Scjohnson5551 --> Nice work here. The new eye color and gun color really worked out extremely well. I am glad you played around with it some more. It must be 198k or less, otherwise, the system will reject it. Also, don't forget to email me your password at fredh@dominancewar.com or tell a friend to upload it for you when the system is ready. Enjoy your vacation:)

rawk- yeah i used a normal map in some places, i agree with the top plate, but to be honest i'm trying to keep my entry's for these comps fairly simple and relaxed, so i'm going to leave my entry as is i don't want to get bogged down, i have quite a lot of other models on the go:D
FredH - i just new it, great stuff is that duracell batteries i see at the back.:thumb:
gridlinked - ha you and robots, sweet as:thumb:

Shadow --> Yup, he is carrying a duracell battery:D I put in their logo on my new version here: http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/mini/1/finals_6.html I think it's easier to understand this way.

Thank you kipiripi for defending my little robot. But, I don't think I want to watch how you defend my bot:p In fact, I would prefer to keep my distance... something like 10 - 20 miles away would be nice:lol: Nice Start there. Hope you make the 3d model this time. Your record for imcompletes is almost as long as mine haha (I am still the defending champ, well, actually, bobo_the_seal is, but let's not get into that.)
ThatDon --> well well well, look who decided to show up hehe. Nice work there man. The style you came up with for this one looks really wicked. If you have time, it would be cool if you sunk the grate a little on the pedestal. It looks kind of strange being perfectly flat with its border inclosing. Otherwise, I am glad you finished this one. I didn't think you could do it, but you finished in style man;)
ThatDon - lov the colors! Good job:thumb:
kipiripi - haha funny bot u hav there! ;)
cheers

I would like to see kipiripi's concept battle it out with my extreme make-over model.
BigToE vs Kipiripi, hah, Hits below the belt are usually illegal in a fight.. but in this fight, all the hits would be coming directly from below Lol. Terrible

zann: Thanks.
BiG ToE:Are You Talking To ME! :) Hehe super idea,it can be really interesting battle :D
Rain:No rules,just make it out :) Hahahaha

I worked on a scene to put in that robot :) . The bump map on the robot is not shown because I still have some work to do on it.
I think this is the first scene I ever build.

Rawk777, nice additional scene, but the dots on the floor, they are so small that they are causing strange patterns. What if you try a different texture? Also, the green light on the back wall conflicts with the green lights of your bot's eyes. Consider changing their color to blue maybe? Otherwise, it's good that you went the extra mile and put in a background. It's good practice:thumb:

ThatDon, Really cool robot! I really like his style.
Antimagic
08-19-2007, 11:13 PM
Rawk777: on top of changing the dots on the floor, I think his green eye needs just a touch of a highlight in it. I think you can do this by simply making a new layer and switch it to overlay. Then paint a white highlight on it. Or, you can just paint directly over your textures, it's up to you. Nice work otherwise:)
ThatDon: Wicked style there! He turned out looking really cool. Congrats:cool:
Here is mine (see attached). I finally had some time to start on it this weekend. I am a little late.. but alas, I think I will make it:)

ThatDon : Good job. It could fit in "warsaw" :).
Antimagic : The texture reminds me of the style of some WWII games. Is it a kind of nazi bot ? :p
I tryed to put some texture on the eye of my bot, but (botbut, lol), it's not quite an highlight. Maybe I'll try something else tomorrow.
Imperialism : I followed your advices :) .
___
I changed the lighting and made some progress on the scene's texture. I hope I didn't mess it up :s .
The bump map is on now. The scene's total tri count is 11424.
I need to set my maps to 512 (they are 1024 ftm) and make a nice 1000x1000 entry :) .

BigToe --> It came out looking really good. The direction you went with the metal turned out really well. It's great that you took this opertunity to practice a new technique. It's a shame you don't have a enough time to finish his head (3 hours left), but I guess it's very late there in the uk. Well done man.
Scjohnson5551 --> No problem. I will update your entry later tonight. Congrats on finishing:)
