Is the final color or b/w? Sounds pretty open ended...is it basically whatever we feel is a final piece? Sounds like fun.

Yeah, it's anything goes for this one. You can hand in a line drawing or a full final concept. These comps are only meant for practice.

Personally, I will probably play around with painter for this one. I have a Macross water color Art book that I am dying to try and mimic.

Just for fun, I am going to make a modeling sheet for both the bot and girl pilot, and put in a colored action shot all together in one image:D

I'll base everything on Fred's sketch (Thanks Fred)

Working on the model now.. but I will get to the concept shortly....

Really nice start Scorn. The ultraman-look together with the matching robots are priceless:p But I am curious to see what type of bot the cool, confident and nerdy kid controls, because I really like his control set up.

Edit: I wanted to do something halloweenish so my robot involves skulls and ghosts...
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1389/1106986548_ef1db97be3_o.jpg
It's sort of a ghost collector (medieval ghost-busting tool) used by this boy. He could be an apprentice ghost hunter or maybe he works for a wizard that hired him to do the dirty work of collecting distilled spirits.

I'm thinking about mushing the skull around some so the eyes could be capacity meters. I was brainstorming with a friend and I might make it more evil, like a ghost sprayer that infests places with spirits and things. Still thinking about it...

The robot is controlled by voice commands spoken into a special mask.

Sounds good to me too. So, post wips and finals in this thread? Just checkin' :D

peter_john has some wicked cartoony skills, my bet is he's the man to beat for this one!

here's my quick sketch, some kind of unicycle steambot with a ridiculously high center of gravity due to the water tank on his back:

concept artists... always waiting to the last minute to create something:p

Keo - Nice start there. After seeing your comp entries, I must say, I really like how you start with some seriously sketchy images and then bring them into something more solid and wicked looking. Like all your others, hope to see this one finished in your same style:cool:

Scorn - Tough choice there. The nerdy kid is cool, but the ultraman controller can be very funny if posed/done right. Yup, it's a tough choice. It will be interesting to see which one you choose to go with.

FredH: Tks man. Yeah, i dig the nerdy kid too. Twin sticks controls. I sketch out the bot, check it out.

keo: Dang, I can imagine him in some animation where he balanced himself over some cliff edges with that water tank. Nice. :)

Rain: I have to agree totally on last min creation. lol. Tks man for the comments. I decide to go for the the nerdy kid.

Here's the bot i will be going for. The name is Prankbot or PK Bot. Basically the idea is the kid invent this remote control robot to get back at the bullies and evil teachers in high school.

Though the bot might look army-like, the weapons are actually non lethal. The gun is actually a super soaker powered by compressed air. It had 2 canisters, one with plain water while the other has mini paintballs.

The other prank weapon is the One-Time-Prank-Bombs (OTPB) that has six different loads which shots out in a lobbing fashion. Few examples are the Flame O Dung whis is self explanatory, Critter Supernova a bomb consist of many roaches.

And while the PK Bot shames its targets, theres a digicam recording the priceless event, ready to upload to youtube!

-scorn: that boy is really sweet! would love to see him rendered. :)

heres my first brainstorm of the robo and its masterblaster.

Dario, as always, your sketches are truly something. The pee to beer converter.. that's just wishful thinking hehe. If it existed, I would be first in line to buy one. I am surprised you didn't put a sexy girl's face in the image of your tv. Men might pay a little extra for this:)

Brian, I wish I had one of those. To finish the picture, you should put in a nagging mother behind him:p Maybe she can be walking away shrugging her shoulders in defeat because lazy boy found a way to beat doing his chores. Besides this, really nice first sketch:)

scorn, ah, the boy's bot finally makes an appearance. Nice:cool: But, I must admit, I find that his legs are not that appealing. What if you spread them out in a spider like fashion? It seems kind of redundant to have four spider like legs that are positioned in a straight line. It looks like they are fixed in that position like arms are in a metal lobby chair. For the camcorder, it would be cool if you made it more obvious. If you didn't say what it was, I would have never known it was there. What if you put in a flash light on top, or a camera spotlight? And then make the camcorder more camcorder like. Maybe even put in the view finder that flips open on the left or right. Of course, these suggestions are just optional:D Really nice work otherwise. Hope you will finish this one.

Vikkie

Great idea Dario :)

here's my take on the topic:

The pilot is a vampire who is also a nerdy mad scientist. He built this bot in the form of a mosquito to suck some blood out of unsespecting victims. The mosquitobot has a limited supply of mild painkillers which it injects prior to the bite. It stocks the blood in it's rearest part, little amounts of it but enough to help the master with his cravings in a few succesful fetches.

(the game idea behind this: You control the mosquito to break in houses and public places at day time and suck some blood of the unsespecting residents. The goal is to make 3-6 succesful runs each level depending on the level.)

and here are my sketches, my favorite is the vampire with the tilted head (pokemon t-shirt, MC Hammer pants, PS controller for the remote)

brian_h: Finally, some sketch dude. Looks like a all in one bot that does everytin. Sweet! I like the idea of the wheels placed in a circular fashion. Jus wondering, does the guy command it through voice?

Dario: Tks man. Yeah, hopefully I get up my lazy ass and colour him. Man, your sketches has a lot of character. And the idea, crazy! Beer from pee? Is there more up this bot's sleeve?

Antimagic: Tks for the comments. Sure help me push the bot design further. Yeah, I neglected that people might not realise its a camcorder. Some touch up on the way and yeah, I need to finish this one before I really get my ass kicked. lol

Vikkie: Dang, I really dig your idea. A vampire inventing a RC blood bank? But why does the vampire creates one when he himself can do it? Maybe he's scared at the sight of blood? lol, sorry man, I got carried away with your idea. Well, you can explore more ideas on your mosquitobot that it can transform to a flask with a straw for the vampire to drink. I like the drawing of the vampire with the crazy hair. He looks like he has pants way up to his chest.

Here's an update

here's an update, I'm going with the nerdy guy.

hey guys - new around ..

Nice work so far.

Scorn - Nice rendering - love the remote control dude - I wonder if the robot legs had some more interesting shapes, instead of being made of all cylinders. Also might be cool to have a few bots working in tandem. I like the military industrial thing - considering we have bots like this in Iraq now. Nice work on deviant!

vik - mosquito blood sucking bot is a great idea!

Dario - pizza popcorn bot is cracking me up.

Can't wait to see these rendered out!

Here is my WIP - Hoping to work on the helmet and make the robot shapes more interesting - the idea is a pilot and bot on a salvage run.

SharkBait: Thank you :) yout swip looks awesome! my only crit would be that her arms seem a bit short, the right arm might looks short because of foreshortening but the left arm just seems short :)

here's an update: still has some issues, need a few hours of more work. I'm trying to make the mosquitobot more mechanical looking without messing up it's disguise. It should look organic enough to blend in the crowd.

You are right on about arm length there. Mosquito vampire bot is coming along!

FredH
08-15-2007, 12:54 AM
Vikkie --> It's coming along nicely there. The guy is looking good by himself, but I think some form of a sketchy background is in order. Something very loose and blurry. Perhaps a classical black and white castle on a hill during a storm? This would emphasize his vampiric nature a little more. Perhaps something like this: http://www.ac-poitiers.fr/anglais/Pedago/GM-JunkFood/Junkfood-Site/storm.JPG.

Sharkbait --> That's looking really good man. The colors are very catchy. Except for the arms, there is nothing much else to say... except keep up the good work:)

Scorn --> Yeah, the legs are looking much better now. But why on earth did you do a full frontal shot of the water gun and water bomb rack?:s It's now hard to see that he has a water gun on there. However, if your plan is to include all your sketches in your final image, then nevermind. I guess a full frontal is ok if another shot explains everything more:thumb: Besides this, nice work man.

I updated the above image to save on forum space - I hope I can find more time for this. Here is my initial sketch.

I agree Vik that a background will help tie things together. I think the wings will read better as you render it out.

SharkBait: Tks man for the crits and checkin my deviant. Unfortunately I dont have time to redraw the legs. :P This bot is all out for fun compared to the ones in Iraq. Awesome render man. I would love to see how this turn out.

Vikkie: Aite, its coming along nice. Colours make me think of BeetleJuice!

FredH: Tks man. Yeah, ur right on me wanting to put the sketches in. Hopefully the sketches will paint a clearer pic, if not I really need to kick my butt for doing a frontal shot.

Well, here'e the final piece. Finally I finish something. As usual, take a breather, look at the piece and realise I can still do more..

-vikkie: very original idea! i really like your concept. maybe focusing more on the drawing and experimenting with the design would have been better than on the illustration.

-scorn: a really solid entry! i prefer your drawings, but i was the one who was asking for a rendering so i better shut my peephole. ;) 10+ for you and good luck!

-antimagic: hehe, thats a wonderful idea! i guess i didnt draw any porn because my girlfriend wouldnt like.

heres my entry! i submit it yet, so no more else to go. unfortunately i didnt have any time for doing something more fancy.

good job scorn. great concept - The legs are working better for me now - Your sketches are really good, and convey alot of personality - which is great.

Vikkie - the background helps alot - the castle helps to tie things in.

Many of the entries take a comical approach - which is cool. I was really hoping to see pizza bot rendered out - but the sketch is good.

Here's my final:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1375/1129059530_eee87de379_o.jpg
The amulet around Grim Jone's neck is what lets him control the Ghost Machine. It obeys spoken commands from whoever wears it. His tuning fork staff is another accessory. The sound it makes is annoying to ghosts, so Grim Jones uses it to flush spirits out from their hiding places.

I'll try to get back later with some comments on these... great job folks!

Vikkie, I agree with the above, the castle you put in really added a lot to your image. I was almost going to say that a few lightning bolts could be cool, but I think having a moon in their is better, so i guess you can't put any storm clouds in. Good choice.

Keo, Lot's of white space there. Are you planning on blowing everyone away with a fancy background? We certainly all know you are capable of doing it:)... The little robot looks really good. You got a lot of details in there for such a tiny thing. Same for the girl.

peter_john, He is controling the bot with a tuning fork? This is a new take on control devices hehe. Cool Idea. I think you are the only one who made a bot who uses something other than metal and plastic.

FredH
08-16-2007, 10:39 PM
Keo --> As usual, really nice and solid sketch there. You have a real detailed style. As always, everything looks great, except the remote control antena... I think a single wire would look less flimsy.

Vikkie --> Nice work on the background. The castle turned out really nice. I think now, you might need to darken his yellow cartoon on his t-shirt. It is a bit too bright for a night shot. Also, for the clouds, are you sure they should be white? I did a search on moonlit night, and here (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/133/366906580_db3e19d7ff.jpg?v=0) is an interesting pic I found. Some are light grey, but the lower and heavier ones are black. This could be cool in your pic.

peter_john --> Cool start there. No comments. It's already looking good.

nice sketches keo - good sense of volume and weight on the girl there. I hope you find time to render this out. I agree about composition.

Vikkie - will you have time to render out the second mosquito? Lightning could be cool!

Jill'san

Keo, It's good that you made a sketch, but what if you made everything brown and then used faint highlights to pop everything out? It's fairly simple to do I think.

Fred: I hope we can apply more than one entry for concept challange?.
and where I am uploading my final works?..

Btw unfortunetely ''2'' Concept means ''0'' 3d entry :),one more imcomplete 3d....

FredH
08-19-2007, 04:45 PM
Kipiripi --> You can submit your final here: http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/mini/concept.html

However, you can only submit one concept entry. Since the size is 1000 x 1000, perhaps you can put two 500's beside eachother with a bit of blackspace in between. This could be cool.

Keo --> She came out really nice man. It's a great line drawing practice piece. It's a bit of a shame that you did not have time to put in a faint color other than white. It's a little hard to read, even more so when it is in small thumbnail format. Regardless, nice work:)
