I've stumbled upon this melscript at the autodesk forum.

http://area.autodesk.com/index.php/downloads_plugins/plugin_detail/uvautoratio/

unfortunate you have to be a member to download it but besides that, it's great.

the script scales all you uv islands so that they have the same ratio!

it works per object so if you have several uv islands per object you'll need to cut that into several obejcts or scale it manually.

I've just tried it out and seems to work fine for me and it saved me a lot of time too :D

Hi
I'm looking for similar application/plugin, but for 3ds max.

Update: I found this, works:

Textools has the same tool in it for Max.

http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/textools-toolbox-for-the-texture-artist

Very useful. Also there's an align to edge tool in there that rotates a UV chunk to align a selected edge to the horizontal or vertical. Both those tools are invaluable and I use them all the time.

Why either aren't included in the standard toolsets of Max (don't know about maya) I don't know.

Looks pretty cool! I myself was really looking for something like this for a long time because I wanted a way to make lightmap UVs that were consistently the same texture size across all the objects in a scene.

However, Maya now has most of this plugin's functionality built-in (starting with Maya 2009 if I remember right). In the UV Texture editor, go to Polygons > Layout (hit the option box), and under Prescale, you now have the option "World" (you have to use the non-overlapping option before being able to select it). This scales all the islands to match sizes according to their surface area in world space before laying them out. I'll attach a quick guide image to using it as well.

Now, all that said, the UV Auto ratio plugin does still have some nice extra bits that Maya doesn't have, like picking one object to base the others' UV sizes on, creating preset ratios, not requiring to layout your UVs as well, etc, so I'll probably still check this out, myself :D Good find!
