 Well, that's truly something. With zbrush's new no#3, I am not surprised. Mudbox would have to put in way too many man hours to catch up with zbrush's monumental leap in tech level.

I highly doubt that they will be able to implement one program into another...
but I hope so. That way I could change my basemeshes on the fly.
Oh wait, Silo2 can do that ;)

Autodesk is one step closer to world domination. I'm happy.
combining a dedicated sculpting tool with a general 3d app would be the worst thing they could do IMO. it probably be a technical disaster also. introducing some advance and efficient export/import formats would be more helpful i would think.

maybe, I woud like to at least see something along the lines of zapplink. but for mudbox w/max/maya
I just hope it means that Autodesk will follow through on the cross-platform capabilities that were always listed as "We are currently assessing the practicality of porting and supporting Mudbox on these platforms." :P
-OR- that Autodesk continues the non-commercial license and/or includes a new PLE version.

It will be good for importing and exporting ( one of the things i dread most)

I too am hoping the importing exporting areas will improve. At the moment, it feels like max doesn't want to give people the ability to import obj files quickly. Importing a 500 mil polygon obj file from zbrush to mudbox or the other way around, only takes a minute at most. BUT, if you try importing something with max, it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 5 hours. I have no idea why max's import features are so terrible but I am seriously hoping that with this buy-out, something... or anything.. will improve.

nah zbrush is way better imo, i think autodesk wont compete with zbrush...but if they do i dont think they wioll won, since they are loosing power and customers to xsi etc...i think the only "good" they can have with this buy would be the smooth and quick workflow that midbox provide...cuz max just sux with high poly counts(i mean milions).....and the sculpt tool....

Well keep in mind that Max was never designed to handle poly counts in the millions on the fly. It's really not surprising that importing high poly meshes from zbrush to mudbox and vice versa is handled fairly well since both are tailored to work with insane polycounts right out of the box. With that’s said there’s a silver lining on the horizon with the latest press release from autodesk: http://pressreleases.autodesk.com/index.php?s=press_releases&item=296%3C%2Ftd%3E

Read it over. It's about time they concentrate on the view ports. It only took them 10 versions before they realized this. I guess it's better late then never.

AH! MY EYES!!! EXPENSIVE!!!!
Toe: same here man :), i gave up trying max9 because of those millions of "This crash every time!" thing...
Pixar, Macromedia, Syntrillium, Discreet Alias Skymatter, YouTube, @Last, Dell, Cingular Bellsouth, Nextel, EBGames, Babbages, Funcoland, WCW, ECW, BET.... Who's Next?
List kinda went off subject.... Anyway, one of my classmates was surprised to hear this news about Mudbox
Max 8 Rules! I usually don't change until there are at least two new service packs. I still remember when max 8 originally came out. It was totally messed up. Couldn't unwrap anything and there were a host of other errors that I can't even remember because I quickly uninstalled it and went back to 7. Let's hope max 2008 is better, and I hope this incorporation of mudbox will give max's import features some new life.
