Voting is now open for the Blizzard Sponsors 2d Mini--Wrath of the Death Knights! Vote anytime between now and Wednesday, December 10th, 11:59pm-ish.
PLEASE NOTE this contest has a 'hard deadline', which means entries CAN NOT be submitted anymore. The minicomp system will let you submit them, but the mods here will manually delete any new entries we find. The next minis will resume our normal 'soft deadlines'.
Regardless, voting itself is still as easy as it's always been. Just log in with 'remember me' checked, follow the link, and place your votes today!
There were 40 amazing entries, and voting on this sucker is gonna be a tough one. Follow the link and get your vote on!

yeah
looking through, I managed to narrow down to 8 entries.

Wow... It took me almost 15 minutes to pick the top three. I could get it down to 10 without much trouble, 5 after some work, but the top three were a pain in the butt.
Amazing stuff. :2thumbs:

Great stuff everyone. Unbelievably tough to narrow it down to just 3. I could have rated 10 places with all those. Congrats again!!

Never entered and saw a mini comp in Gameartisans like that before. With 44 entries and all looks awesome.
Congrat to all members that submitted and inside the voting list. Everyone should be proud.
Just 1 question to GA moderator, the voting system will have same rule like before? I meant only top 3 will shown up or for this one will be top 5 , 7 or maybe top 10?

There are some absolutely stunning entries here, and more of them than usual... I had to resort to discounting things on quite petty reasons to be able to choose.
I wish I'd had the time to get an entry in, hopefully if there is another mini-comp over Christmas I'll be able to enter that.
Is there any chance of more developer-sponsored competitions?
nice job everyone! a lot of good entries this time around

Well, on the minicomp page itself only the top 3 are shown. I think that's wired into the system itself. But I'll post the top seven on the 'announcement thread' and will have all the votes/scores saved, so if anyone wants to know how they fared they can PM me :)

Unfortunately for me I thought I've uploaded mine last week but
apparently the submit button didn't work then.
It was a fun ride still:)

Thx for the clarification joe. I'm really proud and enough for me i can put my entry include in the list of entire entry. To make on top 7 it'snot easy. :)
Oh man... this is the biggest 2d and 3d mini comp ever held at GameArtisans history. Coming with 44 entries for 2d section and 53 entries for 3d section??!!!
For myself, it's going to be crazy. Able to finish 2 concept arts (but i only submitted the 2nd one) and 1 3d art in 2 weeks for both Death Knight Contest.
I need some rest after this comp. :D
Thx a lot to all members that helped and gave me advise, so i can finish it on time. I learn much from this comp.
Especiall thx to David79.
Also to dwintbop that showed, gave me spirit/motivation for your 2 madness artwork posted here. :thumb:
That make me to try make the 2nd concept. :D
Sorry talk to much.

I can't help but guess the best technical/conceptual/composition/color wise entry won't place well because it's a popular vote ;(
Anyways, amazing entries overall this was a very exciting competition, never thought I'd have to restart a painting from scratch to stand a chance, LOVE it! Too bad I failed the deadline (: or ....actually no that's perfect, no WoW for me!
Thank god.
Congrats guys!!

umm anyone who wants to show their talents can just simply post their own thread ;o
The artist's attitude really shouldn't affect the votes, we are voting for the art piece not the artist right? I dont even look at the names of the artists when I vote, but then again I know who they are since I've been reading the wip thread daily -.-
Anyway, I enjoy voting on the concept minis much more than the 3d minis. Concepts look so much prettier :) Would be great to get 1680x1050 versions of some of these, I'm needing a new desktop background !

Wow themed, Wow look gets Wow votes, that's pretty much it, can't argue with that. but then there's always a chance that some originality and innovation may edge out the competition. That's optimism! LOL :D Really awesome entries and more love goes to those who didn't make the deadline, would've wanted to see them finished:) In hindsight, best mini so far, lots of competition, just forces the juices flowing. Keep em' coming! :D

Wonderful job by everyone, some really inspiring work all around!
Going back to Yozora's point:
As for voting criteria, everyone of course has their own... but I myself don't see anything wrong with holding participants accountable for their behavior in the forum threads. We've discussed this in the past in other Challenges, even as recently as the last one: In that case, the topic of discussion was "surprise entries," people who don't participate in the forums and WIPs at all, and then just submit a final. People who only care about the final image will vote for those entries regardless. Others who care more about process as well as a final image - and I count myself in the latter group - might be less inclined to vote for someone who missed the spirit of the Challenge by not taking part in the work-in-progress thread. I might opine that the same goes for others who miss the constructive spirit of the challenges in other ways...
but in the end, we all vote for who we want in our own subjective take on the criteria and it all balances out! :)
One point I CAN agree on with Yozora is the desire to see a lot of these made into nice hi-res desktops. I don't like singling out names so everyone should just do it. Especially the good ones! ;)
Anyhow, great work, all!

Great job to everyone who submitted on time!

Thank you! Sorry, I was just too busy to take part in either challenge, as fun as they would have been. Between work, a side job doing concept art for an unannounced game, a new illustration Challenge over at CGTalk, holiday cards to illustrate, and life in general, there just isn't enough time in the day... especially for a prize I really didn't want to win! :D (If I got hooked on WoW, I'd never have time for ANY challenges!)

Hey man, thanks, that means a lot to me. Especially coming from you. I really look up to your art.
You already know how awesome your entries were, especially 2d. But what you don't know is that I have an Awesome folder on my HD where I keep good works I find, and I put yours there. So in the future I can use them as a benchmark to see if I can push myself any further. So they're not only cool, but helpful too.
Heh, thanks man, and that benchmark with your special folder, I do that too, there is just too much of goodness out there to not put it onto your harddrive. =)

Most likely, Many entries were awesome but some didn't resemble death knights at all. In the end people will just vote for what made them drool the most.
You don't sound too happy about that Pawkfox ;p
But you can't deny nice things are always welcome, afterall they make this world a much better (looking?) place for everyone :)

12-07-2008, 10:43 AM
Wouldnt the best technical/conceptual/composition/color piece be very pleasing to look at?
I'm no concept artist but I'm guessing these aspects are what makes art look good, and the piece that you think has the best of all these aspects must be an exceptional piece to look at even for someone who doesnt understand art in the same way as you do...
Or am I wrong and it goes deeper than visuals? Actually its probably best if you didnt explain it to me... I like thinking that cool things are cool because they look cool.

Bluefey, why you didnt just uploaded the first entry :(
All the entry's are very nice, its hard to vote the 3 best out of it.
EDIT: @ COLD : Lol, I allready thought I saw a Chrismas Hat on the orc :P Genius ;)
Yozora heh, good point again, they say everything is maths the universal language based on natures physics. At the moment they do say that a beutiful face a has very semmetrical and even structure, however they never said who deinfes this structure of appealness. Some say it's down to curves and smoothness, personally I don't have a clue, but I know when I see a sparkle in someone attracted to it, I would not be the first to question it, but the first to be thankful somehting like this does exists. :)
And Bluefly even if you didn't manage to join, I bet you would have made an awesome piece, so don't worry about it, see u in the next fun comp:D
edit: Mittmac thanks! should read the banner closely ;) :D

In reply to Pawkfox's earlier comment on the death knight criteria...
As a concept artist I have had it beaten in my head to stick to given criteria and always try to nail the bullet points as close as possible. I did notice quite a few entries really paid little homage to what blizzard has sort of established as a 'death knight'. Although with that said good art is still good art.
Rayph you don't know how close you came for me, you really impressed with your work, and to your criteria-point, I cannot disagree wiht it, but only say its sooo much fun hitting the nail on the head for a desired criteria. But as you said good art is still good art :)
P.s. if you hadn't posted your work I would have not restarted on the last jot. So I owe you:)

Yeah I also saw the banner haha, but that was when I saw it the second time. ;) And I found 3 hidden messages, 2 on the left seems to be : C Fely?, and the darker one on the right is a mistery to me (A)

Cold- Thanks alot man, I was pretty intimidated to post and pushed pretty hard to get it done. Your final comp was pretty damn fantastic if I do say so myself, lots of energy and very creative plus the death knight helm was pretty sweet.
OneEyedJack
12-07-2008, 01:28 PM
Cold - No feelings attached, just debating most likely scenario.
Rayph - Good art is still good art, indeed. Which is why it feels as if I just got knocked out by Mike tyson. I'm in way over my head.
I suck at details, I don't know how to get better at it (keep drawing) well duh, draw what? Details! But I don't know details! so draw them! It's just an endless loop that slowly deforms my brain into a melancholy Zombie eating tutorials for breakfast and timelaps videos for dinner without learning anything.

Pawkfox- If you are like me then the key to really addressing details is just understanding form rendering. One amazing resource is Scott Robertsons gnomon dvd 'how to render matt surfaces' Really covers quite well general lighting and how to make things go 'bump'.
Freakmean- Yeah ketka pretty much steamrolled this comp :P Really beautiful piece.
