Voting is now open for the 3D Minicomp: Wrath of the Death Knights! Vote anytime between now and Wednesday, December 10th, 11:59pm-ish.
PLEASE NOTE this contest has a 'hard deadline', which means entries CAN NOT be submitted anymore. The minicomp system will let you submit them, but the mods here will manually delete any new entries we find. The next minis will resume our normal 'soft deadlines'.
Voting is still as easy as it's always been. Just log in with 'remember me' checked, follow the link, and place your votes today!

Awesome mini-comp, it was really hard to pick just 3 to vote for, I could easily have picked any number of them for 1st place, hope everyone is proud of their work, great job.

wow great stuff guys!
-dmightyone: you'd have been my first place if your uv's where better organized, you could have mirrored lots of stuff which is now "uselessly" textured. other than that i LOVE your work!
voting was very hard, i again opened up all the cool stuff in new tabs to be able to compare better. great work everyone!

The voted on the strongest concepts and clearest texturing.
(slipgatecentrals was my 1st even though how much power can that lean character have.)
plus i checked out the dmightyone's homepage. The leaf dragon is genius and the other models are up there with the best. My favorite part of your site is your concept of a lizard type creature with voldo-ish weapons on each hand :D)

Oh man... this is the biggest 3d mini comp ever held at GameArtisans history. Coming with 53 entries??!!!
What the hell....
For myself, it's going to be crazy. Able to finish 2 concept arts and 1 3d art in 2 weeks for both Death Knight Contest.
I need some rest after this comp. :D
Thx a lot to all members that helped and gave me advise, so i can finish it on time. I learn much from this comp.
Especiall thx to seven, joxx, Yozora.
Also to slipgatecentral that showed, gave us inspiration/motivation for your texturing. Amazing....!!! :thumb:

Holy crap...
Amazing work, congratulations to everyone that competed, It was not easy picking the top 5 let alone 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
On another note, keep it top three. It already take me way to long to get the top three... If I had to rank 1-10 I would be here all day. Top five maybe, but top ten, uhh...

top 3 is fine. it has worked for thousands of years and doesnt need to be changed.
if you come 4th, it just means you didnt push hard enough.

Wonderful work, everyone! I didn't have too much trouble picking my personal top 3, though in this particular case, I wish I had a 4th place vote! :) Anyhow, great work all around, looking forward to seeing who wins!
wauw, most difficult time being a judge! So many good stuff.

Yes congrats to everyone, very tough to decide the top three.
Some beautiful work and a great learning experience.
Now one stupid question (they are my forte heh) hope i dont open a can
of invertebrates:
I was wondering how the scoring works and i'm not too good at maths but...
if say a 1000 people vote for entry Z at 2nd place.......but only 1 person votes for Z at 1st place...
Z could be beaten by X with only 2 votes, even if X had no votes for 2nd?
X total votes = 2 1st place
Z total votes = 1001 2nd place
Dunno if anyone gets what I'm trying to get at here?:uhh:
It just struck me that it would be better maybe to just choose 3 entries to win rather than trying to place them?
Just a weird thought...I need coffee lol :lucky:
Yozora
12-07-2008, 09:55 AM
I think the way it works is this;
1st place gets 3 points
2nd place gets 2 points
3rd place gets 1 point
Simply add them all up to find the winner, so technically 4 people voting for 1 guy at 3rd place is worth more than 1 guy voting someone for 1st.
This is only a guess btw, I'm assuming this is how it works...
It could also be that each position is worth 1 point only... but then that defeats the purpose of choosing 1st 2nd and 3rd, might as well just be "choose your top 3" if it worked that way.
ploon
12-07-2008, 10:07 AM
aaahhh that would make perfect sense Yozora! :)
If it doesnt work like that...it should!
Wow ploon, I like that:P you confused me though:)
I think it's best to picture it as a count up. For each entry, there is 1st, 2nd and 3rd place count ups. All you do is count up which is highest and compare this with others. For example:
Lets say 1st place - strength, 2nd place is agility and 3rd place is inteligence.
y has = 20 str 21 agi 9 int
x has = 32 str 26 agi 5 int
z has = 30 str 20 agi 10 int
So, y would be automatic second place because x has taken the first place beaten all the others. z gets 3rd place because y has taken the second place beaten all other remaind entries. Even though z might have been close to favour first place he only got 3 place.
This scenario might happen alot, but we wouldn't really see it if we don't see all the numbers. But yea, as someone said, just leave it as it is if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Yozora
12-07-2008, 10:19 AM
interesting theory cold... I dont like it at all from a logical perspective, it would be totally unfair on z since he got most overall votes in all 3 positions but still came below someone who got less votes.... but it does work.
Only problem is when they announce winners, they list the top 7 now. So using your theory, top 7 would be impossible since there are no votes for 4th-7th, and hence no "stat" for those positions. Only logical solution from this point would be to give the 2nd highest "str" and place him into the 4th spot and then it all goes messy from there.
Its not broken, ploon was just wondering how it works.
Goood point Yozora!
Whats up with that anyway, what votes are they really using for 4-7th place? :ack: Or my theory is all wrong... im interested.
Yozora
12-07-2008, 10:32 AM
umm scroll up a few posts, I think you missed my theory :p
OOOH perfect, makes complete sence now :D, yes I did miss that theory:o :)

12-07-2008, 10:40 AM
thanks Cold yeah...I've confused me too :uhh:
heheh its odd though isnt it, just fun to mull it over, I'm a sucker for this kind
of mental torture.
Your explanation makes sense too but for the fact that Z gets third place even
though he beats Y for first......arGGHGHHGghghG :lucky:
I think Yozora's system would be the most democratic (and possibly the easiest
to understand) but I havent got any problem with it whatever way it stands,
its all good fun :) Anyway, good luck, everyone deserves to win. :)

I still like the idea of switching over to the 11 second club way.
(aka, the amihotornot.com way)
You have to rate every pic in the competition from 1-10, and the average highest ranking is the winner (with the ability to go back and augment scores before a final 'submit').
Then leave room for comments and critiques by everyone who votes. At least this way you know every entry got a fair look.
:)
Yozora
12-07-2008, 02:12 PM
Thats a good idea actually, I like it. You'll also be able to see how _everyone_ ranked from 1st-53rd, and the system is really simple. It would cause less headaches for people choosing 1st, 2nd and 3rd thats for sure but it causes a lot more "hassle" in terms of number of clicks... which I dont mind but I'm sure someone does. I actually find voting fun.
To avoid any embarrassment that people may feel for being in the bottom and having it announced publicly, the scores can be hidden and only the top 10% are announced in the winners thread. But the hidden score can be seen by the participant themselves in their profile or something, I duno :p
But then a problem arises when multiple people get the same score which is inevitable. Theres bound to be certain pieces that gets a 10 from everyone, how do you decide the winner then? Let the decision go to the mods? Joint winners?
I have to say guys... there are some FANTASTIC and frightening (for the rest of us) entries in this mini; tons of great entries.
Congrats to everyone that finished! :thumb:

12-07-2008, 04:04 PM
hmm i wouldn't like rating every entry with a grade from 1-10. i like the system the way it is, it's easy, fair and doesn't take too much time. maybe voting for a top 6 or so could be good, but it's not really necessary IMO.

This is exactly how our mini comp voting point system works.
I think the way it works is this;
1st place gets 3 points
2nd place gets 2 points
3rd place gets 1 point
Simply add them all up to find the winner, so technically 4 people voting for 1 guy at 3rd place is worth more than 1 guy voting someone for 1st.

I agree on the "biggest mini ever" bit, its pretty much beyond the rank of "mini" at this point.
Awesome work everyone, and like others have already said; so tough to decide when voting.
So... I'm off to make a dedicated inspiration folder for this competition now.

Minis are so much fun to watch and this one was spectacular. Did my voting which was tough to do as members pointed out. However, I based my judgement on the "total" picture of the artist's talent and his/her critic of others. I sincerely believe constructive critic and showing progress are vital elements in the minis......
That was very hard to choose, the amount of quality reached in this mini is astonishing!
Very inspiring work all round and congrats to all who finished.

Yeah, I agree, having tight specs really does encourage people to push the envelope.
But I honestly do think that for this comp it was too tight. This is the first time I actually considered bitching about it and ask for a few more tris (although I didn't :) )
What I was hoping would happen is something like different specs for different pieces. So like 1.5k for the character, another 1.5k for the armor and another like 1k for weapons.
The problem with that is figuring out fair numbers. So I think overall it gets easier to just say 2k for everything.
Anyways, no biggie, just would be nice to play with more than 2k tris every now and then :)

I think the WoW mini comp was an okay tri number, but i 100% agree that the future competitions could give us a bigger number than 2000-2500.
Now that we're in a next gen world, it would be really great to get given a higher tri count. Regardless of the 1week time, i think the training and the outcomes would be much more rewarding.
