Hey Guys,
to show I'm still alive, I wanted to start a thread that contains my work in progress but isn't limited to just one project (not unlike our good friend Mr. Appleby) So, here is the first one...an Illithid Bust I'm creating in my spare time. I'm currently in the sculpting stage, polishing up details and refining. Hoping to make a low poly version, create the normal maps and texture him up. I still need to add a cloak as well.

Wow you’re a sneaky one, good to see you working on some new stuff Gavin. I love the head but I wonder if some of it's to detailed, meaning the high cavity work around the base of the neck seems to overwhelm and take away from the face. Just my two cents but all in all it rocks and I look forward to seeing more in this thread.:D

Hah, thanks dude. You're totally right, I was talking to some friends about this earlier as well...I think I need to soften up the tendons a bit...I went a little crazy with the cuts and stuff :P
Thanks for the feedback man!

Hey Gavin,
Really neat details on the Head, though I would suggest to give him a Froged-Surface like most Underwater types have, he looks like he's coming from there =P.
Very cool, keep it up!

Larger.... Pictures! I want to appreciate the details. I think on his tentacles, it's not really feeling fleshy. Maybe try backing up to a really low res level, and sculpting out the sides to have more bulginess. Look at pythons and octopii for inspiration. Other than that, it's looking good. More posts!

I love the detail on this, looking absolutely gorgeous. I second poop's motion to get a larger picture. It might just be the material used, and I don't know how Illithids are put together, but it looks a lot like it's some sort of solid hard skeleton, or fossile.

This is really good detailed work. I would agree with Poop if I were to crit anything but really more than anything in the world I would wish to see the creation of the full body. Seems like you are a busy guy so I dont know if that is a possibility but it sure would be cool. Anybody else second me on that?
Oh yea and ... larger pictures?

I'll second the larger pictures. In all honesty though, this is worthy of being in a pirates of the caribbean film. arrrrr!!

I'm loving the look and lighting of the second render. From the side the character reminds me of the Space jockey a little. I particularly like the tendon looking detail in the area above the tentacles.

Hey guys, thanks. Been really busy lately, changed jobs and went freelance. Had a little bit of time to work on this guy, started doing the textures. Not sure when I'll really get a chance to work on him again, I think the textures are near completion...just needs a little more polish.

Also, a bigger image of the sculpt. It's just a screengrab from ZB. My computer has been chugging lately, and I'm too tired to wait for Max to load my model :P It's a shame though because I think it looks better rendered out in Max...ah well, maybe some other time.

Cheers.

Nice one Gav.
Each time I see your work, it seems you've up'd your style level one more than your previous model. seeing this model, without textures/cape, he seemed more of a badass grunt type.. with the textures and clothes, there's a different vibe.. almost emperor-like, rather than some musclebound predator. Funny how quickly clothes/color combos can impact a character.
Whats your plans for him? Body? appendages?

This is looking pretty bad ass Gav, you've definitely kicked it up a notch for this one! I have a couple of suggestions on the texture though, first is the skin which is looking solid but could use some more pink and blue worked in to really make it feel more organic. The dark color around the eyes needs some color blending as well. The outfit is cool and I really like the touch of gold you have coming off of it as it adds a sense of contrast but it feels to dark over all. The culprit is the ambient lighting, which is pure black, I’m not sure if you have a descent lighting set up or if it’s just the render. All in all sweet job dude and good luck with the new gig, I've dipped my toe in to the freelance world as well.:lucky:

Hey Hey, Thanks guys!
BrownBear: Yeah, I think the colours and clothes give him a different look for sure. No real plans after this, I just wanted to make the bust. On to the next character, I think :D
Marcus: Cheers man! I've taken some renders in Max rather than Xn to have a little more control over the lighting. Changed up the skin as you suggested.
As for the new gig, I'm pretty stoked about it..It's going fairly slow now, waiting for things to clear (paperwork...weeeee!)

lookin good man! the modeling is just really awesome, nice details. So whats going on with the neon glows for the end of the tentacles? Maybe having a fake soft glow around it in PS would help some? Maybe a tad for the eyes too... also might be nice if you had some of the green light from the eyes baked into some of the texture on a few of those inner most eye wrinkle/ folds.
Might be nice to see a little more of the pink glow stuff running through some of those veins (faintly), i see that you did it on the one, but i didn't notice it in the the 2 renders... would be a nice pop, when his face goes into shadow.
Anyway just some thoughts, lookin cool, thanks for sharing!

Thanks guys! Sorry, haven't been adding much to this thread lately...been bogged down with work (which is a good thing :D) but I've just got the Unreal Editor via Roboblitz and am hoping to do some more personal stuff once I get a chance. I'm thinking Steampunk - Vampires :D
Gav
I was surprised on how easy it was to pick up the unreal engine tools. Can't wait to see what you do with it!
