I had some free time this weekend and did a bit of drawing, it's been a long time since I've done anything like this and I'm pretty rusty. I'm taking a break from doing any 3d in my free time to concentrate on working on more 2d drawing and painting. These drawings are all line work breakdowns and I'll be painting them up regularly, for now I'm just going to work on this batch then move on to other stuff. I started with Ginks and Gear Max first just to warm up a bit and will play with different techniques as this thread progresses. Anyway I'm looking to have some fun with this and hopefully learn a few things along the way as well. Some of these are candidates for full 3d models and others are just for kicks who knows, stay tuned:lucky:

Marcus, those are really exceptionally good concepts and now I wonder, are you also going into environmental stuff?

When did you have time for these? Impressive. I always had you pegged for a 3d guy and here you create these impressive examples. Really nice work Marcus. I especially like the top red little guy.

well, he did post them before 5am, so my guess is he decided to draw instead of sleeping last night. :)
excellent work, and I applaud your dedication. in fact, it's encouraged me to get to work right now instead of browsing to the next geek news site on my daily list!

Thanks for the comments guys, I started laying down the base colors for the Goblin and he should be done in a day or two.

Marcus: Hehe, well I have some environment ideas but I think I'll work on characters for now until I get my feet wet and hands loose. I've picked up a few techniques from the guys at the studio but it'll take some time to really practice it before tackling anything big.
alexisys: WoW Awesome stuff! I am just curiuos for the color ones, for getting those strokes, do you use hard brushes or something like that?
Marcus: The brush strokes were done with a hard round solid brush, I use the biggest brush possible to lay in the base shadows and highlights then work from there adjusting to smaller brushes for the small details. I'm pretty new to this technique and will be exploring it further, the guys at the studio turned me on to it and it's been fun seeing the results. I feel this method allows for a nice finished yet unpolished look. I'll post a paint work flow when the goblins done to show a better example of this.

Marcus: Haha, well I've always dabbled in 2d but over the years 3d became my focus. I've reached a comfort level in 3d "for now" so I'm dipping my toe back into the 2d world again. After I work on these characters I'm going to do some intense life study and figure drawings.

Marcus: The beauty of being an artist sometimes is working on what you love to do until the sun comes up:), that and I had Monday off so I got to sleep in late.:lucky:

One down and many to go:lucky:, I had some time to work on the Goblin and I learned quite a bit from beginning to end. I was going to do a break down but I forgot halfway through "eek" so on my next go round I'll see if I can work on one. Anyway it was a fun processes and I think I'm going to tackle one of the demons next.:)

Thanks for the comments guys, they mean a lot! Good call rain I'm going to go back and add some color variation the the goblins teeth and also see about making them a bit crooked. I had some time to finish up the Jegvious Demon this morning, and will probably start the other demon when time permits. Thanks again.:)

Nice work Marcus!
I think the upper and lower left hands could use a bit more shadow information. Right now they look a bit flattened.
I can't wait to see what comes next! :)

damn,
I never seen ur 2d stuff ....
even in comp what I saw,u "breaking the rules" and go to 3d right away ...
so i assume that u are 3d guy that doesnt really like drawing
but now i see why u are so good ... lolz ...
I like the presentation u made ... simple bg, but well textured 2d character.
almost look like 3d

Thanks for the kind words guys it means a lot:)! It’s been a while since I’ve done any real 2d work so I’m hoping that I can set aside some time to do a few concepts and illustrations. I have a couple of ideas in my head that I’m itching to get down on paper so stay tuned.

Wow fantastic. :thumb: Now i understand why Eric's advise to learn 3d. So it can help to improve our 2d skill. :)
Nice drawings, I like your work because you know everythink.
You have cool ideas for concept art. I like your colorings the most. How long are you drawing now?
I recently started painting and dude, it's hard. But I also want to be good at sculpting...so you have a fan!
Lets start making groupies!
