Mini #20 - Sackboys | Wallpaper Art Collection

Hey guys, just for fun, I'd like to create a wallpaper of all the sackboy entries on one page. It will be like a Dominance War III (http://gameartisans.org/gamecon/shop/items/item_ga_1.jpg)poster, but not a poster, an online wallpaper. If it works out, maybe we can make it a 3d mini challenge tradition after each comp. I will make this first wallpaper, but I won't be able to do them all. If anyone else would like to give it a try, please write me here or via email at the below address.

What's needed, send me your sackboy entry to admin@gameartisans.org

Submission specs:
- Send one single image of your character posed with a simple pose.
- File: Targa, gif or png. Must have a transparent background.
- Your character must be 1500px to 2000px high. Up to 4 megs filesize maximum.
- Your character must be brightly lit from any direction.

I'll only create a wallpaper for Sackboys if I get more than 30 of the 45 entries.

This is a very cool idea because it really shows our work off as a community, so I'm definitely in. Only, can you sticky this thread somewhere because i almost completely missed it and it would be a shame this wasn't able to happen solely because people didn't know it was going on.

if this becomes successful then maybe make it mandatory for hand in along with the actual entry when we submit stuff.
btw 1500 px MINIMUM per character is a bit huge isnt it? What resolutions are you guys using!

The problem with making it mandatory and including it in the mini submission process is that the files are too big. Submitting a 4-5 meg image takes up too much server space and artists sometimes can't upload such big files without their connection being timed-out all the time. For this reason, the most reliable way to get in artwork is to email each user. I can also verify if his/her image format is correct and suggest he/she make a new one if necessary.

The manual Email method is quite a bit of work, but it's the best way I guess.

I think that a wallpaper is a great idea for mini-comps, especially for the sack boys. Its going to be great seeing all of these little guys together.

Just emailed my image, and taking the opportunity to say congrats to everyone that joined this one and even to those who didn't finish because there were some entries that even at the last few stages I saw them were already pretty cool like Nico and Logan among others.
I joined this one a bit late and managed to finish barely in time but it was all the inspiring and fun entries I saw that kicked me in the butt to finish. Looking forward to more fun challenges like this one and wish everyone a happy new year. :)

And I wanted to echo HecM, congrats to all who finished on time and it's a shame a few others couldn't make it when they were looking so good! it would be good to see what kind of poses are being submitted so that maybe the rest can pose to accomodate the first ones... is this going to look like an ingame level? that would be fun to see.

Hi Draxxuss, in my case I just submitted a clean large render of the main pose in my final entry, for those who had posed beauty shots in their final entry I think it makes sense to do that if it fits what Fred needs, but obviously it's up to the artists, I'm looking forward to the compilation. :)

Not sure how I will design the wallpaper yet, but yeah, I think some small level designing in max will be needed to make this work. I will start to think about it when I get all the sackboys in. Right now, the count is up to 17

In the future, I think I will collect all the files, zip em up, and then put them online for anyone to create a wallpaper with. Will then choose the best 3 and host them on GA. Sound good?

For your pose, I'd suggest something simple with your character's face facing the camera. Other than this, the sky is the limit:)

The idea of putting them up for anyone to make a wallpaper is a good idea though.

You collecting them all up and reuploading them is a unnecessary step that takes too much time and effort imo...
The files are only so big because you're using .tga right? How about we just use .png? I just tried saving several different characters in 2000x2000 (although I didnt maximise the render space completely) using .png and the filesize rarely exceeded 1mb

How about reducing the size of the image to 1000x1000 maximum, so that the filesize wouldnt exceed 500kb if saved as a .png with no background and hand it in together with the entry - and then you can take all the .pngs and zip them up and post it with the results.

Or create some kind of shared image uploading thingy like photobucket where we all have the login details to upload something and we can download all other .pngs ourselves there as well.

i make my "renders" in xNormal, i can only use the max resulotion of my screen.
(1280x1024)

should we use the 512 textures or the higher?

Yozora - In my first post, I did mention that file options are targa, gif and png. It's true that collecting images take a bit of time, but reprogramming the minis can't really be done at the moment. If the wallpapers work for a few comps, and everyone likes them, I'll see what I can do to incorporate the process into the submission system:)

Styx - if you can only use the max res of your screen, make sure your sackboy's head and feet are almost touching your screen's borders:) Stick with the 512 sheet for this one.

Styx you might be able to exceed your native resolution depending on your gfx card and the drivers you have installed for it.

Others - I replied by email. I can't remember the forum names because real names were used in the emails, but if you got an acceptance email, everything is ok. If you got a Please Redo email, I made suggestions on how to correct the image and I hope to get the revised version soon:)
