Destineer - Senior FX Artist

Job description and responsibilities:
Destineer makes cutting-edge videogames for videogame players around the world as well as highly realistic training simulations for the world’s leading military and intelligence organizations. We’ve been quietly building a frontline development studio in Raleigh, NC, led by experienced talent from Bungie, Red Storm, Activision, EA and others. In cooperation with one of the world's top five publishers, we'll soon challenge conventional military shooters with an unconventional game that we're building with our proprietary game engine.

Don't look for info about us on the Web. Even our own website obscures what we're working on. We'll lift the veil of secrecy sometime next year, so now is a great time to become an influential part of our team.

Destineer is a privately held company with strong financial backing from many notable investors, including In-Q-Tel, a private venture capital firm funded by the CIA. We offer competitive compensation, profit sharing, health, dental and vision insurance, a fridge filled with free stuff, and a fun working environment.

As important, we reject the assembly-line production systems of the large studios. Instead, we build focused teams of people who stay with a project to completion and are given the responsibility and support needed to create technologically innovative, fun, and culturally relevant games.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate with designers, engineers, and other members of the art team to create spectacular visual effects
Work from specs, concept art, or photo reference to create visual effects and animated events
Create in-game particle effects
Attach effects to game objects and events
Creatively solve problems & work with other departments to achieve goals of art direction
Provide accurate time estimates and meet deadlines
Stay abreast of and implement current technologies

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Must have at least 3+ years videogame industry experience and 2 shipped game titles, preferably on PS3 or Xbox 360
Demonstrated experience with 3DS Max, Maya, Photoshop, and/or equivalent tools
Strong current-gen. texture and shader creation skills
Demonstrated ability to create effects with particle systems, sprites, shaders, etc
Solid understanding of art pipelines and how to get the most out of them
Strong technical knowledge of effects generation within an engine
Excellent sense of scale, timing, detail, form, texture, and color
Excellent communication skills and problem solving abilities
Ability to be creative and have a strong artistic vision
Ability to quickly conceptualize, present, and execute ideas
Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and work well under pressure
Ability and willingness to accept and follow direction, collaborate with others, and work to meet deadlines
Strong portfolio (on CD or website) of 3D effects and animations
Passion for making and playing videogames
Legal U.S. work authorization required

HELPFUL:

Experience writing scripts (maxscript, LUA) and/or programming
Experience in compositing; Shake experience is an additional benefit
Experience in other FX packages such as Houdini and Real Flow

WHY DESTINEER:
Like many videogame developers, Destineer offers competitive compensation, great benefits packages, a fridge filled with free stuff, and a fun working environment. But, we also offer some unique qualities for you to consider:

IMPACT. We reject the assembly-line production systems of most large studios, where masses swarm a project and then move on to the next. Instead, we build focused teams of people who stay with a project through completion and are given the responsibility and support needed to craft a masterpiece

TECHNOLOGY. Unlike most developers, we build our core technologies from scratch. We do this so we can make games that look and play differently than games created with licensed engines

RELEVANCE. Our games give players insight into interesting events throughout history

ABOUT RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA:

Raleigh is quickly growing into a major hub of videogame development. The Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill is home to over 30 game companies, including Epic Games and Red Storm Entertainment, and is the game engine capital of the world.

Forbes magazine recently ranked Raleigh as the #1 Best Place for Business and Careers and Kiplinger ranked Raleigh one of the seven “coolest” cities in which to live.
Raleigh offers a warm climate year-round, a rich cultural scene, one of the nation’s top-rated education systems, a strong economy, and one of the best standards of living in the country. Beautiful, new 4-bedroom homes within 15 minutes of Destineer’s offices can be purchased for as little as $230,000.

The 1.5 million people who live in the Raleigh area enjoy more than 20 major museums, an international airport that offers convenient and cost-effective travel options, an outstanding selection of restaurants and entertainment, professional sporting events, performing arts, historic sites, beautiful parks, and three of the nation’s top universities. Located near the center of North Carolina, Raleigh is just 2 hours from the coast and 3 hours to the mountains, and Washington DC is only a four-hour drive to the north.
