Hi!
My name's Paul. About 10 years ago I had high aspirations to get into the games industry as an animator, but shortly after leaving college I got sucked into graphic design. I've somehow worked my way up to being art director for an architectural signage manufacturer, but lately started pining to get back into 3D gaming.
I have to say that the Artisans work here is really inspirational and I hope that some day soon I'll be flaunting my designs alongside you!

OMG I didn't know there was an introduction thread.Better late than never. I'm Edwin David, I'm a self taught artist who's passion for illustration and comicbooks gave migraines to both my parents to no end. I'm currently working with friends doing 3D gaming, during my spare time, I do comicbooks on the side and personal illustrations for my portfolio. I love dropping by the site, learning so much stuff my brain can barely contain them! thanks for this, thanks everyone :)

The experience so far has been awesome because in my short time, I have learned so much and met some great people. I look forward to more in the future.

Hello to all my fellow artisan's!~
My name is Robert, but I prefer "Medyl" as in proof of achievement but spelled differently. I have been in and out of art most of my life. I paint, draw, take pinhole pictures when I am not dabbling in something!! I claim to be a life long student, though I have been 3d Modeling for quite some time! Currently I am working for Wardog Studios, on a project, called ForceofArms. We are in the makings to go to DragonCon 2008. I heard of this site, and felt I might fit in more so than some of the others I have tried in the past! I am sure I can learn a lot from many of you as well as help those who aren't afraid to ask questions!
I will try to get some works in my gallery soon, but hello and thanks!

Hi, everyone! I'm Mike Dashow - a.k.a. walrus. I'm a professional 3d and 2d artist and art director, though I'm currently unemployed, having been laid off when my last company started to run out of money. At least that gives me more of a chance to hang out and participate on GameArtisans instead of just lurking! :) I signed up here for Dominance War III, 'though I was on a different forum's team (sorry!) but am really looking forward to the Unearthly Challenge as well as smaller events around here. So see you around!

09-22-2008, 09:23 PM
Hello all, my names Riley Beaumont. I'm a student from Gympie, Australia and I am currently attending a Certificate III Course in Interactive Entertainment.
We have just finished a 3D Character Modelling Unit which involved us creating concepts for a character, modelling in 3DS Max, UVW mapping and unwrapping, texturing, rigging, and then exporting the model into Unreal Engine so it can be played in UT2004.
It was a good long unit and I learnt so many valuable skills. 3D modelling and animation is where I would like to get into the industry, so I'd like to keep working on 3DS Max and also learn how to use Zbrush and Mudbox. I have been reading posts on these forums for a quite a while and it seems like a great community. So in the future once I gain more experience in 3D modelling then I will have more valuable comments and questions to bring to GA.
So for now I'll keep practicing and reading the forums, but I'd just like to thank everyone here for creating such a great community and helping young people like myself learn the skills they need to get in the games industry.
Our course website is http://gamedesign.edublogs.org/, feel free to take a look and comment.
Cheers,
Riley Beaumont.
Hey everyone,
My name is Dean Vaessen and I currently reside in the Southern part of the Netherlands. I've been messing with 3D on and off (damn you World of Warcraft) since 2006 and I owe a lot to Sri Ram Chandra, who is also a member of Game Artisans (username is sriramatrix). He's taught me a hell of a lot and I wouldn't be where I am today without him. I'm currently in my senior year and hope to start taking a gamedev education soon.

10-09-2008, 11:57 PM
Hello!
My name is Robyn, thought most of my online buddies know me as Murgie (short for Murgatroyd). I'm currently a student of illustration, but my passion, for as long as I can remember, has been in game-creation in one form or another.
I'm trying to broaden my horizons by learning 3D modeling and animation (specifically for games). Though I've dabbled in 3D modeling off and on for years, I can't say I've ever really been serious about it before, so I'll be looking for a lot of critique/input/etc.
On a completely unrelated note, I have no idea what this :inocent: smiley is supposed to be.

Hey All.
I've been hanging out at the polycount forums for awhile now. I've seen alot of work/contests/etc... from here over there and figured it was about time to come check it out.
Been modelling/modding for games now for about 8 years. Thief II, Morrowind, Dark Mod (Doom 3), TF2, and most recently Zero Gear.
I'll try and post some work soon, I'd love to get critiques from a fresh/different perspective and like polycount it seems like there are alot of great modellers here. The galleries have some pretty great stuff in 'em, hopefully my stuff will be at home here.
Late.

hi all
i'm a trainee 3D artist who loves environment art. i have a degree in interior design and a few years of building surveying and CAD drawing under my belt, but for the last year or so i've been following my dream to become an environment modeller for games :)
i've already found some really inspirational work in the galleries here and i hope to be able to join in with some challenges to improve my own techniques (i'm currently working on improving my zbrush skills for moulding those tricky architectural details and organic shapes  )
i'm hoping to have built a good enough portfolio to apply for work next year *crosses fingers*

whats up fellas. My name is Jerome Bolsan and I graduated from the Academy of Art about a year ago majoring in 3D modeling. Tried looking for a job in the industry as a modeler but fell short and got a couple of gigs as a tester at a few Major Game companies here in the Bay Area. Tired of game testing, I decided to go back to my portfolio and work on it full steam. Looking back at my old portfolio, I realized my weaknesses and through practice and good advice, I plan to make my weaknesses my strengths. Looking forward to a great experience here. Cheers.

01-08-2009, 12:29 PM
greetings all!
this is my first post here. I joined a little while ago, but instead og posting immediately, I decided to wait until I had something to show and/or ask. luckily, I now have both. :)
before I start with those, I will give a short history of myself. I originally started in just 3D modeling, in a little program called wings3D because that was the only program my computer could support. later, I got a new computer, and decided I needed a more powerful program, so I investigated something I had heard about from some people on a forum, blender. I downloaded it, and was so confused by the interface that I gave up. a while later, I decided to try again, and looked up a tutorial for the interface and that, combined with a 3 button mouse, helped me learn it. so now, that's the program almost see exclusively, although I have also used Terragen, Terragen 2, Bryce 5, and a few others. (although I no longer have a copy of bryce.) and of course, photoshop. that's where I've been since.
ok, on to what I have to show. when I signed up here, I saw that your stuff is ridiculously above the level of mine. so I tried to make something that would be closer to your standards. and its not there yet, but its getting close. I will post it in the WIP section at some point, but first I have a major problem, regarding alpha.
the basic idea of the level is its a cathedral, where a zombie invasion started, and I hope to eventually display this in the level (for example, if you turn around and go out the huge door, you will see a failed attempt at blockading it.) the level is going to be dark and foreboding, except for one area, next to the stained glass window, where a beam of light is shining on a section of the floor, and some grass and a small tree is growing. my problem is with the light. I made a cone for it, and mapped it with a basic yellow material that is slightly transparent that I made in photoshop, but it refuses to show up. I have had this problem before, and I have no idea why it doesnt work, because sometimes when I do it the same other rimes, it works. I am uploading a .blend file so blender users can look at my setup. sorry, only people who use blender will be able to view it, but my question is only posed to people who use blender.
anyway, find it here:
FPS_new.blend (http://savefile.com/files/1957124)
one of the things I hope to eventually learn how to do is figure out how to make stand alone versions of my games.
anyway, also look around the level and feel free to give me any crits and suggestions about the level. (its also the thing I had to show)
anyway, when this problem is resolved, I will post it in the WIP section.
cheers,
Yoda
EDIT: ummmm. this wasnt just a basic introduction...

Just recently found out about gameartisans.org. It's rapidly becoming my favourite 3D art site ;)
Being doing 3D for about 2-3 years now, but nowhere near as good as the average artist on this site ;)
I'm waiting for the next mini comp to have a go, cause i always find comps to be motivating and i end up learning a great deal.
I primarily use Modo and ZBrush to some extent.

Howdy!
I'm Dan Peavey, I reside in B-town, Vermont, and I've been engulfed in learning everything I can about game production art and game design processes. I've worked with America's Army on the official map pack with the Emergent Media Center at the end of last year, and currently am on a project with IBM.
Just an idea of how I'm handling my obsession with creating art and improving my ability through critique and practice with my friends and teachers, I've probably haven't left my apartment for anything other than General Tao's chicken in the past 120 hours.
My current addiction: ZBrush. I'll try to stop lurking these forums, too. All the kick-ass work I see tends to scare me into a corner and cry a little. I look forward to participating in active C+C, and to contribute to this community. :)

I just started learning to draw, so I have a lot of catching up to do, but hopefully I've come to the right place to get some insight in getting better and possibly make a few friends so we can share friendship bracelets. Read you later!!

Hi Folks-
My name is Russ and I am a polyholic...
I am a UK based teacher looking to swtich careers into 3D modelling for games. I know a few guys in the biz and am burning all kinds of midnight oil getting my technical skills up to scratch. This looks like an amazing forum to learn and get feedback on my models so I hope to have something good enough to show very soon- I'm probably entering the Dominance war generals contents to get my feet wet :)
All the best,
Russ

Hi!
I'm Marco, a 27 years old italian illustrator just landed on UK seeking for fortune(aka a good job).i'm moved from italu because there are little to no chances to work in gaming field. In Italy i've worked expecially for the advertisement and the scholastic publishing, so i coud say i'm a newbie here, even if i have a decent knowlege of games(from the player side:)
This is not my first post because i've missed this thread:), and i hope it's going to work because the other i've posted today(in the War General Portraits topic)seem not to work at all(i can't see at all)

Hello, all.
I came around this forum once a long while ago and introduced myself, but then I promptly fell off the face of the earth.
My name is Amy, and I'm aspiring to become a concept artist. I know it's a terribly tough field to bust into, but I feel that I have to take measures to improve myself in order to attain the kind of quality that companies want. Now that I've pulled my head out of the fog, I think I'm ready to go ahead and do that.
Looking forward to trading snipes with the critics. ;)
Peace.

Hello GA world! I'm Kiesha, aka Lush. Gill Bates (my hubby) and Centrifuge (my brother) finally got me to sign up after all these months of lurking lol. My first love is architecture and interior design, but I'm also a very big game art fan! My skills are nowhere near theirs in the 2D and 3D areas. But I do dabble in graphic design and some very amateur cartoonist work now and then myself. Maybe one of these days I'll get the guts to post a piece or two. Anyhoo, it's nice to finally make the transition from GA groupie lurker to at least a passive participant. :)

Hello! My name is Robyn G, recently been directed to the wonder that is dominance war and Game artisans, and is hoping to participate much more on these forums :thumb:
Greetings Game-Artisans! My name is Jeff a.k.a Avid (among a long list of other names). I'm one of those newbies who flocked here once realizing Dominance War IV was coming, as I'm sure you'll get quite a few of those kind of members. I'm a recent college grad, bachelors of fine arts majoring in game art and design. I was actually told I should really start visiting these kind of forums during my last quarter of school to start networking, so I'm here to finally get myself in gear.
Currently unemployed (rough times, eh?) I earn a buck here and there doing freelance graphic design and other Photoshop related odd-jobs. Here's hoping to chat with you all some more soon! And an early g'luck to those participating in Dominance War IV.

03-19-2009, 10:40 PM
Hello all!
The name is Bloodeye aka Jonathan Cronk. I'm a soon-to-be grad of Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Graphic Arts and concentrating in Illustration.
I've always loved game art, especially character design. I've drawn plenty of characters, all with there own backstories. My preferred medium is ink on trans-tech paper, but I've recently gotten back into digital painting.
Even though I'm a complete newbie, I'm going to give the DW competition a shot. I'd rather try and fail then not try and wonder how I would have done.

I'm known as Pezzle online, but my real name is Brittany Pezzillo [You can see where the nickname comes from eh?]. I'm a student at a community college in Central New Jersey majoring in Fine Arts but I'm gearing up to transfer to an art school in NYC (crossing fingers for SVA).
I'm actually a huge fan of sequentials and graphic novels, but game art is pretty amazing and something I've also always been interested in. I'm basically here becuase I heard about Dominance War IV and I ended up discovering this cool community.
I don't know if I have a shot at DWIV, but who cares, I have to try.

03-26-2009, 01:35 AM
Hi everyone!
IAMFeAR, real name Stephen.
Just registered to the site so I could enter Dominance War IV.
I'm still kinda new to 3d, started in 2007, did a one year college course in 3d Animation for video games, learned a lot but still need to learn a hellalot more, and practicepracticepractice. This should give me the focus and structure I need to get something done.
I'm pretty sure I have no chance of even ranking let alone win, but who knows? At this point just finishing the contest and getting feedback would be a huge step for me!
See y'all in the WAR!!!!

Been inspired by games and game art for the past few years, I'd like to get in that business as soon as possible. Too bad there are (almost) no studios here. --

Hi guys! Im john (known on CGtalk as urban-rebellion). Lurked on there for ages before becoming a bit more active, but havnt really found a direction until now. Studied multimedia at uni (which included some 3d) but mostly learned in my own time. currently not doing anything at all to do with 3d job-wise, but im hoping to snag an intership with my snazzy (but currently non existant) showreel.
Game assets is where i want to go (characters esp.), so i figured id come to the best place to learn and immerse myself with all the amazing professional work here, and hopefully just a tad bit of it will rub off on me haha.
Ive already started a thread for the first piece for my showreel, feel free to look and comment on it. Looking forward to getting to know all of you better :thumb:

Hi there, My name's Sophie Houlden, I'm an indie designer looking to improve my art.
my current fave tools are: Blender, SAI, mspaint and Unity, all cheap stuff I know, but it's to match my budget and I'm more than happy with it all :)
I've made quite a few games now as I'm a big fan of rapid development, and I'm starting to feel I can make a fun game fairly easily, but they rarely looks as good as they can, so here I am to level up in badass art skills (hopefully) :D

Welcome to GA redpandafire! Are you into 2D, 3D or both? I'm a 2der but I'm learning 3D out of curosity and to do a small game with my friends.
We have chatboxfull to talk here and on deviantart.com , There's a GA group that's been started for us members.
I'm on googlewave, but I'm still learning how to use it, it has issues with one of my web browsers so I have to use firefox just to go onto googlewave but there is a GA.org wave there as well. BigJohn in Chat box , he's almost always here runs that wave.
I hope you have fun, and don't forgot to upload someartwork to your gallery, you can learn how to edit in your User CP option in the scroll bar menu, there you edit your profile and gallery etc. also to post pics in the thread you'll need a picture hosting account on sites like photobucket, tinypic ,flicker or picassa etc.
If you have any other questions just post your concerns in a thread and someone will be glad to answer them.

Hi, I'm a sophomore in college going part time until I graduate, which sucks. But I guess it gives me time to grow. I've always had a passion in art and video games. So it was an no brainer to strive to became an game artisan ^_^ !!! Also to become one of few women in gaming and help throw in more femininity in the world of game art.

Hello Everyone.
My name is Dwayne. Some of my closest friends coined my nickname which I use from now on, being working with computers from technical troubleshooting and software use.
I am currently finishing up my Bachelor level degree at ITT Technical Institute in Arnold, MO in the Digital Entertainment and Game Design program. A little history about myself:
I wanted to make games or create CG cinematic work since...well dreaming about it. The spark for this inferno of passion I have for art started while I was fiddling with the QBASIC game on DOS, the one with two monkeys and exploding bananas. I have become familiar with the technical side of using these programs in the industry.
I enrolled at ITT in November 2005, when I was playing Ratchet and Clank : Going Commando. I had the sudden epiphany, instead of playing games, why not work on them! Since then I have acquainted myself with various programs over the years, such as Poser, Photoshop, 3DS Max, etc.
I have been browsing this forum for some time and now here I am. I really hope that I can improve my skills on where I need to land myself doing what I love best.
Heya, I've been visiting Game Artisans for a while and for some reason, I've decided to sign up now :D
I'm RJ and I'm loving all the 3D work on here, it inspires me to do some 3D work. However, I don't know where to start! So can anyone point me to the right direction? :)

Hey guys!
I guess usually you first introduce yourself and then go into a challenge and i did it the other way arround lol. Sorry for that.
Anyway my name is Hugo im 26 years old and im from Portugal.
Couple of years ago i did a course back in my country where we had 60 hours introduction to 3dmax. Well at first was kinda boring until the guy said " Hey guys u know we can make games with this program right??" and that single sentence left me completely adicted to 3d.
Now im living in belgium and working a field thats not even close to what i want but its a way to get money so one day i get to go to a school and really learn 3d and who knows...maybe even become a great artist.
Anyway enough dreams:think:
Stay cool guys!

I really like the upbeat attitude and general game art nerdery I see, so I'm here to make it my community home, if you'll have me. ;)
I'm in the midst of warming up for DWV and plan on representing GA with my entry. I'll most likely be making a WIP post of my refurbished DWIII character I never finished (for job reasons). It is my warm-up for the main DWV comp.
At any rate, I look forward to getting to know everyone and do what I can for the community!

Hi Everyone!
Kin here, I'm from Vancouver currently working in a small game dev studio as an artist mainly working on the 2D side of things. I joined pretty much because I've heard a lot about Dominance War and thought it would be a cool thing to participate in. From lurking in the different threads here I think GA would be a great place to do so! :lucky:

Hey everyone... I'm new to to game artisans... after lurking for a little while.
Not so new to 3D, but still a long way to go... heh, I don't know where to start... so much amazing talent around here, I'm having a major case of stage fright.
I'm trying to figure out if my skills are good enough yet to get hired in some low to mid level position... ahem, since i see Blizzard is hiring, and I live 8 miles away.
After 20 years as a civil engineer (and doing a lot of 3D modeling that way) now that the economy tanked in my industry, I'm retraining myself to get better at the entertainment side of 3D.
I can model and UV map anything... texturing and creative skills are decent but not quite as developed... OTOH, I hear "You're too hard on yourself' often.
*whew, ok, I got the first post out of the way, I think*

Well I've also been a lurker for awhile, coming in and out, learning about tools, plug-ins, programs, etc. and thought it's my time to finally join. I'm a graduate from AAU specializing in soft and hard surface modeling. No preference really, I enjoy the challenges and techniques on approaching different types of models. But every time I visit this site, I'm blown away by the artwork that is produced on this board and hope to join a few of the challenges as well to further my skills. This should be a fun ride!

Greetings!
I go by Robert, and am a freelance character/creature artist... always looking for new challenges and opportunities to grow as an artist, and build my career. I've spent the last several months working as a consultant (contractor) on my first commercial project doing some characters for an up and coming ios title. And so far its been great comradere and great fun being a part of something like this.
I look forward to showcasing some of my personal work, and getting to know some of you here...

Hello there!
I've been a inactive member lurking for some time and thought it was finally time to get involved. I graduated from a 3d game course last summer and I'm primarily a character modeler but currently working as an environment artist.

Hi there.
For about 9 Years I'm working for an small animation studio in germany. Most of the time I'm doing 2d environment textures and sometimes high or lowpoly characters.
But not to an extent that is in any way satisfying.
To make the long story short. Just like most people here I want to develop some real skills and join the fun. ;)

Hi everyone!
Thanks for having me here at gameartisans.org! I've been browsing the forums for some time, but now it's finally time to come out from the shadows and participate in this community!
I'm a grad student in Sequential Art currently finishing my thesis on the use of traditional and digital mediums in character design. I have a BFA in 3d Animation with a minor in Sequential, and love 3d modeling, traditional sculpting, texture painting, and especially concept art. I'm also very eager to participate for the first time in Dominance War V. I'm so excited to enter the competition after admiring the work produced for it over the years. I feel my skills are now honed enough to compete, and I cannot wait!
DW V is so important to me; I feel like it's a chance to take all of my knowledge and learned skills over the years and really put it to the test! Just the feedback alone will help me so much to improve my work; being a finalist or a winner is a plus though! :D
In any case, I'm just happy to be here! Hope my posting is approved soon so you guys can see my introduction.
Thanks, and here's to an amazing Dominance War V!

Complete beginner here, feeling a little intimidated by all the fantastic artists but hoping to learn a thing or two. I love being able to browse everyone's stuff and seeing WIPs is really educational. Thanks for the site and everyone who contributes!

Hi guys I am Guillermo Gómez Zará, Aka maximuselessar or Gomezzara. I am a Chilean (so sorry for my english..), Since 2005 I have been working or rather research in the field of 3D. All this started from the frustration of not being able to play or have a console (at the time), and take the decision myself to create my own games.
I Research and achieve run into the famous software like Maya or 3DMax, but unfortunately without any concrete results. But in 2006 I learned to use Zbrush to completely drive me to work in 3D. Since 2009 year I have been experimenting a lot with Zbrush, Maya, topogun, Modo and Silo. Now I'm trying to put into practice everything I learned. Just considering I'm not 3D as a career studying traditional. (I am studying at college). Almost as a hobby, but also as a passion I'm trying to become a great artist and I hope CG here in GameArtisans can get the critical need for improvement....
Greetings :)

Hello :)
I've been looking at stuff around and, being a game artist too, I thought I'd make myself known here!
I'm an old(being 26 :D) Post-Graduate from Teesside University, who completed his master in Game's Art last September.
Been workin on my portfolio since then, and gathering knowledge and experience in a small game studio in exchange of nothing ( not even a salary, that's dedication xD).
Gonna enter Dom War V, as my 1st challenge  will see how it goes !
Enough about me ! See you around !

I'm still a noob but I'm looking to improve my skills and maybe eventually break into professional game development. But I'm not sure whether I should focus on Blender or Softimage as my main modelling package...any thoughts?

If money's a problem for you then I would strictly focus on Blender. It's not an easy app to get into, but it's an amazing piece of software that just so happens to be be free.
HOWEVER... If you can afford the $3k-$4k for the software then I'd invest in just about any of the Autodesk products. Softimage is incredibly powerful and versatile and you really can't go wrong. If you're looking to maybe one day break into games, I'd probably go for either 3dsmax or Maya. Not to suggest that Softimage isn't used in this industry because it is. However, Maya & 3dsmax have a solid and strong user base when it comes to games. Maya skews a little more toward film work, but you can certainly find game work if you use one of those two apps.
If you're a student, and can prove it, you can get a free 3-year license.
http://students.autodesk.com/
Fully functional in every way. The biggest limit is that you can't use it for commercial purposes. IOW, no making money on the side from your art as long as you've got a non-commercial student license.
Beyond software... Focus on fundamentals. Don't just learn where the tools are or what buttons do what. You'll have to master that too, but there's no guarantee that you'll use the same app for the entirety of your career. Focus on the elements of good art. Focus on the various non-app specific tricks and techniques. This stuff will serve you well for years to come.

My Name is Armin Chaudhry. I am 27 and from Germany.
This month i have finished my Bachelor of Arts Degree in interactive animation.
I have learned alot in the last 3 years. For exemple my conceptart teacher was the creative director from the game crysis and he gave me some realy good advices. Curently i am working on my portfolio to get my dreamjob. I am a Max User, but also use Maya from time to time and of course a zbrush artist. I paint my concepts mainly in Photoshop.
I have worked on 2 student game projects during my university time and my goal is to find a job in the gaming industry, so thats why my art will be mainly tuned for a gaming environment.
Still a long way to go but it will be fun.

Cookepuss--Thanks, that sounds like great advice. I don't have the cash for any Autodesk products, but I've just gotten the Softimage Mod Tool 7.5. So I'm torn between using that or Blender for now...

Greetings,
I've been poking around for a while now and have been participating in Crazyfool's Daily Sculpting Exercise thread, so thought I may as well toss an intro up here. I have studied part time at an online art school, but the majority of my education has come from Youtube and various forums around the internet. I work with Max and ZBrush and have done little more in other 3d apps than open them.
I am currently working on strengthening my abilities and building a quality portfolio. Game Artisans is home to many talented and highly competent artists and I hold that immersing oneself in an environment filled with more capable peers drives improvement, so here I be :D Ready to compete and learn!

I am a highschool student from US, and have just picked up modelling. Luckilly, my school gets the entire Autodesk suite, so I can play around with maya, softimage, and 3dsmax. After checking them all out, I decided on Maya, and thought that there would be no better way to learn how to use a program than take part in Dom War V. Do I think I will win? No. Do I think I will finish? No. Do I think I will have fun? Yes! I'm still deciding between here and PC. I've lurked there for a while, but the people here are pretty cool too. Someone convince me one way or another.

So... if main focus of my 3D work is high poly detailed modeling, rather then video game focused stuff, should I still post some of my work? Have a WIP's etc thread?
