So it looks like Circuit City is finally going out of business and is liquidating the stores they still have operating:s. http://www.edge-online.com/news/circuit-city-liquidating-remaining-stores

So I'd take advantage of this and head down to your nearest Circuit City to see if you can get some deals. Luckily the Circuit City closest to me is only 10 minutes away by car.
In retrospect this is pretty sad for all of the employees loosing their jobs, thankfully CC had the decency to wait until after the holidays!
That said I remember all the fun times I had at Circuit City. I used to work there about 10 years ago and made a lot of cool friends, many of which I still hang out with today.
Now go get those deals!:D

Useful information, Marcus - Thanks! There's one not too far from my house, and we still have a non-digital TV at home (you know, the kind that becomes non-operational in 2 weeks?) Might be some nice synchronicty there!

Haven't read the article, but I saw the story on TV. I wouldn't quite head down there immediately, in spite of this news. The "going out of business" sales haven't been announced yet and probably won't be soon, at least not in the next week. These things take time to get going.
I remember when Suncoast Video was acquired FYE's parent company several years back. It took them about a month to start unloading everything. Near the end, all that was left were the counters and racks. Even those were for sale. :)
Word to the wise. Even though the deals will get better as the end nears, you'll be left with crap the longer you wait. Even worse, people will start acting like insane wolverines. It's gonna get ugly. No joke.
Linens & Things recently closed up shop. Two women at a L&T here in NYC got arrested last month for fist fighting over a $10 gravy boat. Crazy sh**. Just imagine what people would do for discounted electronic.

Dude...I fucking hear ya, man...This is sad stuff, 34,000 people will lose their jobs. It just sucks complete ass cuz it's only going to get worse. :(

While I feel bad about the loss of jobs, the closure itself doesn't matter to me. I tend to avoid Circuit City like the plague. In the past stores like Best Buy or (the mostly closed) CompuUSA have had much better deals and selections.
I can't remember buying anything important there.... Let me amend that. I tried to get a new air conditioner this past summer. They failed to deliver it 2 times and double billed. Their customer service reeked and I just ended up canceling.
Yeah. Right. They'll be missed. :guns: :excite:

I feel the same way... I avoided CC because of their customer service. I'm sure there were people who enjoyed it but I have had nothing but bad experiences with them. I fear crowds... I may not buy anything in their going out of business sale, simply because I don't want to deal with the crowds and the possible hassle. It is tempting though.
As far as the layoffs go. I feel for them but the bad news is that retail isn't done with the layoffs and don't be surprised if many many more chains go down in the next 6 months to a year.

lol, I guess I'm the only one with good experiences with CC. The Best Buy here completed ignore their customers, at circuit city every five minutes "Is there something I can help you with?" probably cuz of less customers -shrugs- I only bought a couple of video games, cd's and my wacom from them. I would for sure be there searching for deals...but...I'm fucking BROKE!

I can tell you as someone who worked for Circuit City that there customer service used to be excellent, and frankly it had to be because the employees all made a commission on any and everything they sold. This was the in a sense there primary source of income.
So there was a major incentive for employees to bend over backwards in supplying the customers with the best of service. This was something that worked for CC for years up until Best Buy moved all of their employees to a flat salary format!
When that happened CC reacted immediately and moved all of their employees to a flat salary. I guess you can chalk this up to monkey see monkey do. This caused quite the dilemma since CC couldn’t afford to pay the top sales earners what they were making when they were on commission. I knew people who were awesome at what they did and were pulling in six figures! Hell at 22 I made over 65k selling home theater systems and big screen tv’s!:lucky:
That said most of those employees myself included left CC leaving only a hand full of teenagers and people who simple didn’t give a sh^%t, and why would they, they were making a salary whether they sold something or not.
This in my opinion was the beginning of the end and lead to CC poor customer service, which in turn led to unhappy customers, which in turn affected sales. That’s not to say that this was the only reason but it sure contributed to it.
That said I’ll miss them a bit more than the average Joe since I met a few lifelong friends working there but yeah dug there own grave and will be replaced by something better, I hope!:)

I can see where you're coming from Marcus. What you say makes a lot of sense. There was a time where I felt the service at CC was awesome, then at some point it did go down hill.
hopefully capitalism will prevail and we will get that "better" thing :thumb:

I don't know. Over the last couple of years, there's been a greater shift from concrete & brick stores to digital shopping. Especially in a bad global economy, where people are pinching every penny, traditional sales outlets have a hard time keeping pace.
It's not just electronics stores either. Over the past 3 or 4 years, there have been either full closures, massive layoffs, or hostile takeovers at: Macy's, Toys R Us, KB Toys, Woolworth, CompUSA, Circuit City, Hollywood Video, and tons of others. In order to keep up with online shops, some have started shifting toward the superstore design.
Personally, I do a LOT of shopping online. In the past 12 months, I've online shopped for: PCs, hardware, TVs, DVDs, books, games, software, office supplies, furniture, and even baby clothes. I mean, if you don't mind waiting a day or two, brick & mortar stores can't compare in any way. There's more variety. Sales tax is rarely an issue. The online prices are better, especially since you can comparison shop without leaving your desk.
I'd wager that I must've done about 90% of my Christmas shopping online. Best of all, no crap like waiting on long lines or fighting with other shoppers for the last "Super Mega Hyper Ultra Whatever Gizmo" that my nephew wants.
I feel bad for those people out of work. I really do. I just don't mourn loss of pushy sales people or nitpicky service desk agents. If these guys knew how to serve their customers with smothering or annoying them, I'd probably frequent traditional shops more often.
For now, I'd much rather shop on my own terms.

I went to visit a Circuit City today. The deals aren't really worth it yet around where I live, in SoCal. Most of the stuff was only marked down by 10%. Some CD's were 20% off.

I went there, and I saw people outside with signs saying 30% off, but then we went inside and almost nothing was on sale or discounted. But there were a TON of people in there buying shit.. that wasn't even cheaper.

yeah in the uk a dvd/music chain called Zavvi went bust, went in and their "clearance" prices we're the same as HMV's (their rivals) normal weekly sales if not worse. I saw stuff like marked up products marked 50% off and I'd just seen it round the corner for cheaper at 20% off.... clearance means nothing these days it's almost a scam by liquidators to get as much money back rather than an actual clearance sale.

If you look around you'll find that most of the prices for stuff at CC is actually higher than competitors right now. The company doing the liquidating went in and marked everything up, then discounted leaving most products slightly above their manufactures suggested price after the discounts. Which is insane considering the stories last night on the local news with huge lines wrapped around the stores. I guess it's a good thing for the liquidators that most people don't bother to comparison shop and are put into a frenzy when they see the discount signs go up.

There was an article about it in my local newspaper which said that liquidation wouldn't begin 'til next Friday, fwiw.
