I figured that it was odd that we have a ZB/Mud stamp thread, but not one for materials. So, in the process of texturing my Kingdom Hearts entry, I made up a buttload of ZB matcaps for y'all. Some are better for sculpting. Some are better for rendering.

Enjoy.

Sadly you'll have to filter out all the comments to see the good stuff :p but that will apply here as well when people start seeing it.

True. ZB also has their official repository here: http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/library/

Thought I'd create some just for people here. ATM, I think that some will be more useful than others, but you never know.

anyone know where I can find a good tree bark shader that works?

Nowadays, there are only a handful of shaders that are REALLY helpful, IMO.

I think most of the MatCaps are too occluded, they hide the forms instead of displaying them in the right way.

The two best shaders I found for sculpting are Orangeclay and Oily Red Clay. They also look good for client previews.

Never quite understood why that horrible red, waxy material is the default, yuck.

True. Then again, it depends on exactly what you're modeling. Many materials, while awful for 3D work, are perfect for the 2D/2.5D stuff - ZB's original purpose.

Gnomon's two matcap packs are a mixed bunch. You pay $40 for 24 shaders, but only end up with 6 that are practical for day to day use.

RS_WinstonClay
RS_GreyClayExtreme
RS_BronzeAntique
RS_BasicClay
RS_WesternClay
RS_ModelingClay

That's about $10 worth of shaders for 4x the price. The rest, such as the sculpy & ghost ones, are so washed out that you can't make out any practical details. Awful when carving out subtle muscle details, where you need those deep shadows to guide you.

They also look good for client previews.
That's something else entirely. What's good to show off a model to a client isn't always what's best to work with.

Y'know... It's not a pretty material. It'd definitely dull. However, it doesn't have an unbearably annoying specular or a shadow so deep that too many details are hidden. As a default material, it could be worse.

Of my personal materials, I prefer the following for day to day work - each serving its own purpose.

These are the names I use, not the numbers in the above ZIPs. They should be easy to identify though. The sources are obvious - although RLS_Sideshow was captured from a Sideshow Collectibles maquette.

Are they included with ZBrush by default? Is the orangeclay what you used to preview that Heavy avatar? It looks really good...shows off the forms.

RS_OilyClayRed is actually part of the 1st Gnomonology pack. Orangeclay might be a repository shader. Not 100% sure.

Matcaps take a little time to get right, but they aren't exceedingly hard to make. That's why I think people should contribute their own homegrown. Your clay may look different than mine & my pearl might look different than yours.

Share. :)

Repository as in a gnomon repository? Download for a fee?

Repository as in Pixologic Matcap Repositiory. There's a download section on Pixo's main site, as well as an lengthy matcap thread on ZB Central. The matcaps in those two resources are freely downloadable.

im sorry to say but ralph stumpf ftw! never regretted giving my money to gnomon for those. i did though for some of their dvds.

oilclayred and red chavant are just too great! rs_ghost may look ugly at first sight but for skin texturing its priceless.

another good page for matcaps is
http://www.cgchain.com/viewforum.php?f=41

some very very good ones and not overrun by crap shiny plastic shaders.

each shader has a little disciption and they are split up into display/presentation shaders and work shaders.
kinda mankes it fun too browse thru them

youll have to register to download them if it hasnt changed.
while ur there post a thing or two :)

Is orangeclay part of the standard repository? I had a look, found lots of really interesting ones, but not that particular one.

i don't know where i found orange clay i have it for quite some time and gave it to thomas a while back, it's the shader i am always using to work with and to present to my clients, i'm pretty sure it's by metamesh but i could be wrong

here's a downloadlink

http://polyphobia.de/public/stuff/Orangeclay.ZMT
i tend to use a little more cavity mapping, depending on the asset, but normally i'm using just this one

Thanks Aftermath. They look cool. And thanks for the digging that up Neox! Much appreciated. Works really nice for forms like Thomas' Heavy sculpt.

Anyone got the CGChain matcap collection? It seems to have been pulled from their site. :/

Nope, thread/file seems to have taken out.

I found this a while ago here: http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=64467

It's essentially a 'Specular' like Shader setting for ZBrush. Take a look at the Post and you'll know.

Incase you don't have a ZB-Account, here are some off links.

Thanks, really am looking for the shaders available on CGChain though...

Anyone have them and feel like dropping them into their dropbox and sending me a link? ;)
