View Full Version : Annoying Maya Bug...

I will cut right to the chase. Whenever I use Maya for a long period of time, I will be randomly pulling some verts and a number of faces will disappear for absolutely no reason. If i save it out then and reopen it, the file is "corrupt", and otherwise I lose all data I've done up to that point, and it persists, so sometimes I find myself redoing the same 10 minutes of work 4 or 5 times.

I am EXTREMELY close to just dropping Maya all together and just finding something more reliable to work in. And whats even more strange, is that I have only had this problem when working on MY machine.

Any ideas as to what could be going wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Yung

I never had that kind of a problem before. What version of maya are you using? Do you delete you construction history from time to time (every few minutes). Do you Undo often? What file do you try to save as ? ma or mb?

Yeah, it seems like its only effecting my computer for some reason, I think I may do a computer wipe this coming weekend.

I use Maya 2008. Yes, I delete history VERY often. I dont undo a lot, but I do do it. And I always save as .ma format.

The other thing Id make sure is your video card drivers up to date. Some people at my workplace had issues with Maya, after I had them update thier video card drivers they were good to go.

Do you think it could be something as simple as the undo history (the amount that is kept in memory for you to undo) in Maya is set too high?

i never had that problem either.
i used to use .ma a lot, but it keeps getting heavy and ma retains lot of information that i may not need. now days if i think there is no need to debug the file later then i use a .mb file.
so try a mb file instead.

I just upgraded my video card drivers, I hope that helps. I will check after I get home, and will lower down the undo count while I'm at it. As of right now, Maya is still at the default -- which I believe is 50, too high?

Ive only been using .ma because I've been taught that they are supposedly less likely to have errored/corrupted files than .mb, so is that untrue?

Thanks for everyone's help.

I used maya for about a year with no problems with the .mb file format itself, I never heard of .ma being more stable at least but then again it never mattered to me.

No such thing. ma file is just as likely to corrupt then mb. ma files however allow you to take a peek at it and see what's the main issue with the file. Also, ma files is more suitable for version control.

So then it shouldnt matter whether or not I use .ma or .mb? because ive really grown attached to the ma, but if someone gave me reason to switch I would.

I also noticed that after restarting my computer, it takes it a longer to do that bug, does that hint at all as to what might be going on?
