Gaara has taken over the Yakuza and rules with a shattered glass arm.

I dont feel Gaara at all, even though the Concept looks great itself, the Mood is gone at all.
I would probably make him alot less bulky , smaller, though give him a childish look, maybe rounder face.
I like the concept itself, though not the mood.
looks very Akuma, wow - Don did him too.

I agree with Tryforce on this one. If he didn't have the gorde I never would have thought Gaara.

I totally disagree with the above n00bs. I don't want to see Gaara done exactly like the anime version. I wanna see some Spacemonkey version. This is awesome, and I can see enough tell tale signs that I'd totally buy into this being Gaara if put into context.
I think if anything, you could work on the dark eye rings more, and possibly give him a more nonchalant seething look. Right now it looks like generic rage.

ha as much as i like the concept its looking like akuma ate the sand demon. maybe change the hair and get rid of the beads? also the thumbnail u posted made me think u were doing the half sand demon awaken form of gaara (which i was kinda looking foward to.. *hint hint* )

Spacemonkey, I'm a huge fan of your work, but I'm not really digging this concept at all.
The silhouette seems boring and simple, the details are unappealing, and the face seems to lack any and all of what I've seen of Gaara. I'd dig a major redesign, but I hardly even see a resemblance here. You've got a lot of straps and separate cloth details around his waist, too, but they don't look like they're doing much at all except adding in a little busy detail. Why not use them to break up the silhouette, a bit?

I think you have all the elements in there, the new costume looks great, the rock arm is a good addition, and the tattoos are a nice touch, but, you really need to rework his face and his proportions. It's a very cool first draft. Can't wait to see what comes next:)
really cool looking concept, makes me want to go a bit nuts on my own concept but Im holding back hehe

uhmm, not to bust a bubble here, but, the Demon of the Sand can not be hurt, so how the hell did he get those tattoos?
I can see this being a continuing trend in this competition... Big muscular guy with spiky hair, a mean look and an accessory or two from the original character.

Why don't you post some of your own art so we can all bash on it too?
Lol POWNED. Anyway, the only problem i have with the concept is what big toe said. There is an episode that shows that Gaara can't make himself bleed, therefore no one else can either. Other than that, its a bad ass concept and i like where it's headed. What ever happened to the half demon look?

I just don't like how far the concept strays from Gaara, that's all I'm getting at.

Wow indeed, you sure did jump on his butt quick, only reason I can't figure out is why...He just posted his opinion, though maybe not in the nicest manor, it wasn't really all that insulting either. Would you disagree that Tim's concept is a bulky guy with spiky hair that only has one or two things from the original character? I don't personally and a few others on this thread would agree, others don't, thats cool, it's only an opinion. If he really wanted to be rude he might have posted something along the lines of what poopinmymouth did about the posters before him.
You were VERY quick to be rude back to him when you don't even know him. You implied that due to his low post count that he was in some way unable to voice his opinion and that he was a poor artist. I'm really sadden by what I have seen people post in this thread. Some people that I thought were really cool have really shown something different. Not that you all care, I understand, just a shame.
Good luck on your entry, I hope you have some fun with the direction Tim has taken the character, it looks like it could fit into your style very well.

(seriously, though, guys. Enix wasn't that rude, but don does have a point. No need to squabble any more.)
Edit: additionally, guys, it's a naruto contest with good prizes. There are going to be a lot of entries that deviate from the original designs, because unless you're a frothing at the mouth anime fan there isn't honestly a lot to work with.

Actually Don was not out of line. Tim does very good concepts and to simply say it is just some buff guy with spiky hair is an insult. Everyone is able to recreate a character and recreating a character doesn't mean they have to look exactly like the original character.
Enix could have kept his rude comment to himself instead of implying tim's concept is simply like the majority we may see in this competition. It is a good concept and a concept at that. No constructive crits were given by this new comer. So, I as well, can't wait to see Enix's work.
As for the character, I can't wait to see what you come up with Don!

I don't want to derail this thread anymore then it has already been but I think you missed the point. I never said Don was out of line, he posted his feelings the same as Enix did and I'm not one to judge, i just said that I didn't understand why he did it. Rude comments are often made, if you want to point out some we can turn that finger to you with your "Lol POWNED" comment. That is not a very nice, or needed comment that you as well could have easily kept to yourself. But you, as Enix had prior, felt compelled to post it, so whats the big deal?
I'm sure we can all agree that Tim's piece of art is amazing, it's VERY well done, no one is disputing that. People are voicing thier opinion on what they think of the piece as it pertains to the character of Gaara, who it is supposed to depict.
Calling it what it is should not be an insult. He did draw a buff guy with spiky hair. I would imagine that very few people that would come across that image on a deviantart page would think to themselves that it must be a person's idea of Gaara. I might be wrong, but in my opinion the only thing that really seemed to make the transition over to Tim's piece was Gaara's gourd, without that I would never think Gaara. On it's own the concept would make a fantastic character, it's very unique and has a great attitude and feel about it. It's just not Gaara to me, or others in this thread as it retains very little of the original character.
On a constructive note about the piece Gaara is a guy who has always been tormented by his inner demon and the village he lives in. The black lines around the characters eyes are supposed to show insomnia as well kinda of a darker side to him. I think you could really bring that out a lot more in your character by working on the face some. Darken around the eyes more and just kinda bring his face and feel down to much more evil level.
I'm looking forward to the final concept and what Don does with it. Don your style is awesome and can really shine on a piece like this, I'm looking forward to it!

O.o wow.....um...wow....you guys........come on....anyway. I like the idea. so good luck with him. thats all I got to say.
I have to admit, the 'feel' of Gaara is lost, but I think your concept is good itself. Since there is no rule about having to keep the character to it's proportion/general look, I think this is not a problem.
Can't wait to see it done :)

Its all good baby! Some peoples they love that anime and some people they read the competition brief and do what they feel. I totally understand people wanting to see these recreations of their favorite characters, I mean saw it for years with Dragon Ball Z Characters.
Some times its a good thing to try and emulate your favorite art style and other times you need to do something a little different with it. I wouldn't be suprised if you dont see more interpretations of the characters but dont hate, apprecaite and the constructive criticisms are more than welcomed, infact encouraged.
Guys remember to have fun, and breath in and out, in, pause and release!
Thanks for reading! :)
Well said Spacemonkey, a brilliant and respected attitude.
About the design itself, I however have to agree with the pro-anime side, though the concept is well done! Can't wait to see more from the both of you. Keep it up fellows.
I think the concept is awesome, even though it's far from the original Gaara. Actually, it caused me to lean more towards applying more of my style to my own entry, Obito, than to stay close to the original. Besides, I'm not all that familiar with Naruto. Even if I was, I'm not gonna compare "a book to its counterpart movie" so to speak. All my crits during this challenge will be based on the design put before me.
As of now, my opinion, the only thing that stands out is the bead necklace and the gourd seems like it's not tied into the character's design... maybe the texture and color of the necklace should match the gourd or be replaced by something that would say "I feel naked without my gourd."
Alright, back on topic, I think the concept is great = the scale is very intimidating, as is Gaara. Though I think a lot of what makes Gaara SCARY is the fact he displays such immense power/malice in such small and unassuming shell, which this concept seems to contradict. I think a good basis for constructing this figure would be to visualize a small bomb with a BIG boom if that makes any sense, create something that while small and unassuming in scale emotes an almost godly and terrifying presence. I think keys to creating that in a composition that would both meet the contest guidelines as well as meet this possible tasking, would be to utilize both colors and form in your model/textures that are generally relative to a fear or terror emotive while restraining yourselves from making the guy a giant, its like "I get it, he's big and powerful, way to be blunt." Ya know? You don't need to be so forward, attack the subtleties and steer clear of the obvious, use your imagination and creativity as the artists that you are to take this in unexpected directions where the outcome is just as, if not stronger, than what you need to win.
I think what a lot of people truly lack in there pieces is truly strong facial emotions, and for the most part, this is wear a compositions featuring people get a lot of their emotion, while Don's Akuma is a good example of effort in this field, there are a great many, and i'll say this again, subtleties that someone who is anal when it comes to details could really use to his or her advantage. Sure, everyone knows simple facial gestures and the message they send, but I think you should really look at yourself performing similar gestures and see how you can use your modeling, texturing and normal mapping to get these across more effectively and with greater fervor than is generally applied. But it doesnt stop there, the body itself can also display a wide array of emotions, albeit not as strongly as the face.
While I may have digressed from my point, I think your greatest strength in this piece will be to capture Gaara's emotion, his anger, his hate, and render it in a effective and artistic manner. It may help to look at what makes this character who he is, watch episodes with him in it, or simply look for any visual or audible material that might help you assume Gaara's state of mind. Get a mirror, turn on some heavy metal, emo or screamo and get angry. All the while remembering to incorporate every possible emotive weapon you can, color, form, etc. and look at any other ways you can manipulate your piece so that the feeling they have from the get-go is in-line with how you think someone would feel staring Gaara in the eyes in real life might feel: terrified, frightened, nervous, and damn near about to piss their pants.
I hope any of that makes sense, good luck with this project, I'll be watching
Edit: Also read back on someone's comment to use a half-transformed Gaara, where his arm and half of his head have become that of the sand shukaku as well as his tail. This would probably be a very interesting way to approach this character, though I think it would require a little more, if not double the skills to be able to effectively render both aspects of Gaara and merge them together into one strong and cohesive composition.

Digging the concept Spacemonkey. I didn't like the original very much, because it honestly looked more like Jiroubo from the sound 5 than Gaara, but the newer one gets the Gaara feel down more with the hair.
In all honesty it still doesn't read as Gaara to me, but it's your concept, and the whole point is to redesign a character so I you can call em however you like.
However, I'd say there is one gripe I have that should be addressed, and that is his eyes. Currently he just has generic "meatfaced thug" eyes that you would expect on muscular demons, or muscular demon guards, or muscular demon possessed barbarians, or... you know, all the other meatfaced characters your average hero would plow through on his way to the boss. If you could make his eyes more expressive of just how fucked up Gaara is in the head (without going for psycho) you could really create a more powerful character imo.
Sweet work either way, this is definitely a thread to watch.

I gotta agree that this new update is a lot better then your first to me. I like it much more. I'm still unsure about the tattoo's, but thats your choice. I like how you brought back some more elements of Gaara. The strap for the gourd helps a lot and the MW's you have on the bottom of the torso cloth is a nice touch as well. It's definitely coming along nice man. I'm looking forward to seeing the final concept.
On a side note, it would be pretty cool if you did the half demon version, but I can understand not wanting to tackle that one :P.

It´s real a great style of Gaara and the story with Yakuza is ordinary, so I can imagine him in real life. Only crit on his face are his eyebrows, Gaara has no once, that is his biggest characteristic point for me.

design seems sound. I actually liked the first one more BUT as they say..."the first is never the final". Not sure about the yakuza bent but hey...to each his/her own. I guess after browsing thru the messages I think you may want to consider digging more into the character's background and its universe. Perhaps also test a thin version of your character. Well, just my crappy .01 cent.

I really like this one. It makes me think everything went wrong in Naruto. Like the whole sand village and hidden-leaf village got whipped out even Naruto and Gaara is the solo survivor. Now he like Cloud in advent children, he doesn't want to get close to anyone in fear that he will let them down as well as he doesn't forgive himself for what happened. But that's just me rambling and readding too deep into this entry.
Since he has no hair I suggest putting a tattoo of the Badger that's trapped in him battling with the nine-tails fox in a very sume kind of paintting style. Well good look, I wanna see more of this guy.

Looking good. Love his front/side view with out the shirt; very believable anatomy work. Only critiques is more wrinkles/folds (small and sharp) underneath the belt area. It might sell it better as something that's actually tight enough against it to stay on, because right now it looks like it can slip off easily in battle. Like I said, great anatomy work, love the hands. I've already told you about the face issue, so I'm just reminding you about it (though you already took notes to that). Great work man. But you need to put more time in materials because that is your weakest area right now. Though you pull it off in the end (such as the environment test you had to do, which is very impressive by the way), it has not progressed as your other skills. Put more time into it to experiment.

I'm going to go out on a limb withthis one and say that those cracks in his arm hurt real bad. He looks like he is about to cry.
If he needs it, Dosu can give him a hug.

Even if he doesn't look like Gaara, it's still cool! Especially the hand!

sorry Frozan, you wont be seeing anything from ThatDon, till ThatDon is done.
it's funny though, ThatDon has the most viewed thread, but only 3 updated images of the model. Makes you think.

Its not surprising, its because we expect great things :p
did you submit final work but not update the thread?!
If you didn't make the deadline, don't sweat it, but be sure to complete this fella for your portfolio.:thumb:

I tried my hardest but wasn't able to get it to a level I was comfy with to submit, it would feel just wrong to enter him after all that work in a less then stellar state. I will try to post some screens tonight of my progress though even though I hate posting rough art work.
don't feel pressured to post just by me poking my nose in!
I can wait until you're ready to show it. :)

Your right, what's the point of having this wip thread if your not going to use it. Tons of people floating around the game art site, just waiting to help out.:( But can't, if not given a chance.
