The Brief: Baby Movie Monsters!

An old staple for game art competitions is to recreate your favorite movie monsters. Let's put a bit of a twist on this normally familiar topic by taking those monsters and making toddler/baby versions of them! That's right--I want to see big headed cutesy Predators and Aliens. Let's bring out all those pacifier wielding Jasons and Freddys. Give us YOUR favorite big screen monster--as if it were a newborn.

The point here is the juxtapose something familiar to everyone with a new, humorous angle. It should make for some fun results. :)

As always, backgrounds are optional. Pedestals are optional. Basically... everything is optional. This challenge is here for those desiring to practice their art and receive friendly advice from fellow artisans. So keep it easy, keep it quick, and keep it real. Good Luck!

Please do not make a new thread for your entry. Keep all w.i.p shots in this specific thread.

It's STRONGLY encouraged that you post progress images as replies this thread. We're not forcing everyone to yet, but half of the point of these minis are to help build up the community. If you're posting last minute without at least saying hello, then you're missing all the fun! Stop lurking!

Final Submission:

The Specs:
Submit one image, 1000x1000 pixels or less. This image should include a 'final baby movie monste image' (required), and any preliminary work (sketches) you wish to show (optional). The 'final baby movie monster' part must be a full color representation--but you do NOT need to draw/paint a background if you don't want.

You can submit your finals here:

blankslatejoe -?- This is so cool, I think this is going to be much bigger then the last one:excite: , BUT, one question here:

- ? - Can I do my own monster design, or at least something that is based on some movie monster, I don`t realy like any of the movie monsters so I would like to make something based on the Alien :p - ? -

This one sounds really fun must be such a short dealine because of DWIV Huh?

blankslatejoe
02-04-2009, 08:51 AM
death - yup, its a short deadline because of DW :)
ilegacy - there are a lot of cool game monsters, but I think we should focus on just movies this mini...we should save baby-game monsters for their own comp!
tatarigamy - unfortunately I'd say you shouldn't make up your own monster. There's a TON of monster movies out there, and the point of this mini would be to make something that would be recognizable to others. You could always go with a more generic movie monster too--like dracula, the werewolf. How many movies have had one of those kinds of monsters in it..?

StormRider
02-04-2009, 09:32 AM
Looks cool!!! As you said, it's a short deadline... I don't know if I'll have some time to do this, but I'll try!! I want to make some speedpainting soon heheh.

Yozora

maybe I dont watch enough movies or something but I tried to think of as many movie monsters I can, and I cant think of more than 20 myself :(...

Godzilla
Gamera
Dracula
Mummy
Frankenstein monster
King Kong
Werewolf
Predator
Cloverfield
The aliens in independance day
The aliens in mars attacks
The aliens in Alien
The alien in ET (does this even count as a "movie monster"?)
Jaws (technically its just a shark, not really a monster...)

aand with help of a msn friend and google;

Kraken
Marshmallow man (ghostbusters)
Giant Claw
Reptilicus
Biollante (Godzilla enemy)
Mothra (Godzilla enemy)
King Ghidora (Godzilla enemy)
Mecha Godzilla
Space Godzilla
A bunch of other enemies in Gamera and Godzilla movies whose names I cant be bothered to find!
Lochness - I'm sure there must be a movie about this one.
"Gwoemul" from The Host - (relatively recent South Korean movie with some weird looking lizard monster thingy)
The fly

Do orcs, goblins, treants and whatever else races there are in lord of the rings count?

michaelZHsee

Good to see folks embracing the theme. Those of you who weren't as happy with it: This is the last mini-comp before Dominance War starts. There'll be a lot more rules and regs in DW4, so consider this practice for that!

I'm going to pass on doing my favorite movie monster of all time - the title character from Robot Monster - and instead do the Predator. here are some loose sketches, nothing final yet.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l260/mdashow/predator_sketch01.jpg

(Sorry, dwinbotp, I started these a few hours ago, before I saw your post.)

i will do the djinn from wishmaster
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f28/1--Blood-1-clot--1/Wishmaster.jpg

walrus
cuuute, i had a similar idea about the predator ^^

EDIT: ahh and for those who need more ideas, I throw in some names ^^
- pinhead and the hellraiser crew
- pennywise (count "it" as monster?)
- pumpkinhead
- the lord of darkness
don't shure if "deathmachine" and some sinbad creature count

just want to share some ideas i made befor i have chosen the djinn :)

I kinda wanna try...but wanted to see if my options were valid...Michael Myers, from Halloween or Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, are these guys cool or not?

dwinbotp
02-04-2009, 01:24 PM
Having fun with the theme, although Joe maybe meant "monsters" differently or in a more traditional sense. still time anyhow. might just go AVP like on my first post. Keep them coming guys!:D

@walrus, hehehe, it's all good man:) Them Predators ain't just popular monsters, they're classic already :D

blankslatejoe
02-04-2009, 02:05 PM
yozora - yea, LOTR monsters can count--but if you make a LOTR troll, for example, make sure it looks like a baby version of THAT troll, as much you can.

dwinbot - an AVP duo would be delightful!

Interesting concept - a baby Alien (from Alien/Aliens) - since an infant version of the Alien would be the face-hugger and i guess the toddler version could be the chest-burster, technically :D.

walrus
02-05-2009, 01:27 AM
ryansumo - I never would have thought of him, great choice! However, i think you're doing him a great disservice by not showing his body. Also, work with the proportions more - that could easily be the adult Davy Jones. And lastly, parents NEVER leave their kids in the tub alone... although who knows, maybe they would with Davy Jones.

Jessart - He's looking more human than .. um... Godzilla-y? Maybe try pushing the snout out more. Push the proportions to less human. Also, it might help to pull the tail out from the body so that its silhouette reads more clearly.

02-05-2009, 06:53 AM
dwinbotp: awesome! i'd make the teeth a little less prominent though, babies have small teeth :D.

wouldn't one of those babies look like this (http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/projects/cases/eggs.jpg)? :).

Amethyst
02-05-2009, 07:23 AM
dwinbotp - very funny, but smaller teeth as Japhir suggests. Nice baby pastel colours...:)

ryansumo
02-05-2009, 07:46 AM
walrus: yeah I was thinking that too. I think the tub is making it harder to show his proportions as well, although I like the idea I may have to set him somewhere else.

dwinbotp: Kabayan! Amazing work you've got there! I think it'd be really cute if they had less teeth too, like if the alien just had his two front teeth (or missin gthem, ala the song "all I want for christmas...).

Absorber
02-05-2009, 08:30 AM
Done much research, so for the ones with no inspiration or no time to find some on the internet I got a list:

PiratesoftheCaribien Davy Jones
Gremlins
'The Host'
'hydra', if there is a movie of it
'Stay puff' (Ghost busters 1984) :P
The giant claw (1957)
'Jaws'
Alien queen (looks cool)
Rodan
Orga
Medusa

I think i'm going for the big-headed/big-eyes aliens from War of the Worlds 2005.
http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/9882/inspiratiejg8.jpg

maph - hahah, I hadn't heard of minira before, that is one creepy baby dino!

walrus - thanks for the idea, got some crits from some guys at the office as well and they concur, here is a quick rework. I mean godzilla is just a guy in a rubber suit, so i dont want him to tool too inhuman, but he definitely wasn't looking dino-ish enough.

Mittmac - yeah, i also thought about doing the host monster as well, but I like godzilla too much :)

Davek - Nice choice! I love the expression on the face. The eyes still feel a bit like adult eyes to me, not childrens'.

Jessart - The shape is looking a lot better! Although I really think you should treat him like a real monster, not just a baby in a suit! :)

Here are my latest doodles:

Thanks for the feedback so far everyone :)

well, after tossing around a few ideas i decided on what back drop he'll be against. still fleshing out the details, but here's the rough idea i threw together during lunch. and those will be buildings behind him, just to clarify, i know i didnt really fill that section in yet.

walrus - haha, everyone is required to have a naked baby pic taken of them in life, same goes for the predator!

Davek - yeah, i agree, the eyes are too old looking, especially his left one.

Tat- Awesome! I dig the proportions.

Jessart
02-05-2009, 01:59 PM
Tatarigamy - I think his fingers need to be stubbier. he still seems to sinewy and lanky, babies are usually associated with roundness, stubbiness, fleshiness, which will be kinda hard to convey with an alien. but i think shortening the fingers will help with that a bit. He's getting there :)

Tatarigamy
02-05-2009, 01:59 PM
TheQiwiMan - ThanX man, and you just gaveme a nice nickname too Lol

Jessart - yes I know, and you are right :p , I was thinking baout that too, but if I make him fat he would loose his Alien look, and my idea was that if he would be undeveloped that woudl be more closer to an Alien baby... BUT making the fingers a bit shorter and stubbier, that could help I gess, And thanX for the advice :)

Everyone is so quick of the mark, I especially like the AVP, Dwinbotp.
Davek, good choice, nice take on it so far.

I decided to go with the dude from nosferatu, count orluk or something (too lazy to google so early in the morning).

http://fc68.deviantart.com/fs40/f/2009/036/6/8/nosferatu_by_Oeleaus.jpg

btw 'Shadow of the vampire' is an awesome movie!

walrus
02-05-2009, 03:10 PM
Really nice pencil-work on those sketches, Samson (whether or not it's "real" pencil.) The bodies are working but the head looks like a grown man's head stuck on a baby body. You might try experimenting with proportions more to get him really looking like an infant.

Duncan Fraser
02-05-2009, 03:19 PM
Samson Brown,

I have a real thing for vampires and your entry has to be my fav so far. #2 is my personal preference so much life to it (hahaha see what I did there)?
I agree with Walrus on the fact that the proportions of the face could do with a little tweek, but seriously ace job so far, oh and the doll is a stroke of genius.
I am really keen to see some more.:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

wow this is huge as idea!!!great fun for sure!
Hope my workschedule will allow me to do some movie monster baby.
Almost make me wanna do a baby DW!That has to be great!haha

Walrus: Love your idea! That smells like pure Zack inspiration :-)
The Zackator with Skull is gold!

ryansumo: great idea!Although I agree with Walrus about the fact that his body should be shown and maybe you could play around a bt more with the proportions indeed.
Maybe this can be done by simply putting your camera a bit higher so we can see whats happening inside the bath.this way you can maybe also put a Black Pearl Toyboat in there:D

Cowboyrange: Neat idea!!!

Samsonbrown: yeeehhh, love (little)vampires too!Great!Indeed right now the head still seems one of a adult.Often babyfaces are more rounder, especially the nose. The face on the head seems lower as on a adult head too and the eyes nose and mouth seems closer to eachother;Like centered in the lower patr of the face.(Hope my english doesn't suck too much :-))

TeacupBandit:that is gonna rock!!!haha.

Lots of other great ideas & stuff too!

.
Hey, can I consider Freddy(1,2 freddy is coming for you...3,4... )as a moviemonster?..THink I can,not?
Had this idea of little freddy with his green/red striped pyjamas playing(or being curious) with a dreamcatcher, :)

TheQiwiMan, thanks a lot! Let's see if I can finish it better.

Walrus, your baby predator is adorable. I want to raise him if you let me.
I've noticed the eyes too. I've made some change here and I think its better now. Thanks!

Tatarigamy, thank you! I can totally see you finish your Alien piece in a very posed and symmetrical manner. Maybe a little bit of Brom? I can't wait to see your next move!

Jessart, I hear you. I'm getting there! Your gozila is looking sweet by the way.

Samson Brown, Nosferatu rulez! Thanks man.

Okay here is my update.

You're fast, Davek! It's just a bit odd that the eyes are at an angle (and a different one at that) on the hands. If you understand what I mean, because I have trouble explaining it in words.

I think it's that crazy, fat, bladed-arm guy from 300?
Yup, that's right :) . He's actually harder than I thought he'd be, since his silhouette is basically a giant baby body with a tiny head, so having full baby proportions kills his unique shape a bit. But hey, it's still a baby with blades for arms!

Try to find ways to accentuate his baby-ness, like making his mace a rattle or something. :)

Here is a little update on m`baby, I made his fingers a bit shorter.
Question : can I make more then 1 baby monsters in my final???
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll231/wichkingofangmar/Movie-monster2.jpg

Davek - Thank you for your kind comment :p , your doing a great job too, I think it was a wonderful idea to take a character from that movie, I loved it very much, you managed to keep his character the way it was and making a cool baby version of him too.

DeAtH_SmiLeS – interesting Sauron baby, maybe you could use some reference of his armor, or you could just let him that way, look what I found LOL

This looks like fun though all the good ones have been snapped up
(I know it doesnt matter having 2 or more people doing the same subject matter
but...they'll just show up how crap I am :lucky: )

So at the moment, indeterminate baby, half hours worth of scribble, soon to be turned into a famous
monster movie er baby. ... I just gotta figure out which monster:lucky:

btw thats a knife he's holding on to, ahh how sweet:)

What the hell :) Bet I dont finish!!

Mittmac - Thank you :)

ploon

Tatarigamy - yeah Chucky would be cool :) I'm kinda drawn to Ghostface from Scream,
though technically I spose they're slasher's and not monsters? Nice sketch Tat!

I like the juxtaposition of innocence next to the potential for evil....or summat lol :lucky:

Tatarigamy
02-06-2009, 05:26 AM
ploon - That would be a good chois too. I would suggest that you start working with some thin lines too there (on a separate layer). You kind a made a base for your character, this is a good base on which you could start making some lines to give him a bit character, just like Okmer did, well he started with lines just like I did :p .

ploon
02-06-2009, 05:29 AM
Tatrigamy - thankyou for the advice :) I've done very little painting of ..anything so getting
the technique is hard for me. I'll try your lines suggestion, if I could get it looking half as
good as yours or Okmers...or anyone else on this thread I'd be happy!:)

Death Smiles: Good idea, these comps are a great way to learn anyway though:)
There are some great tutorials out there but for me its putting it into practise thats the difficult bit.
All I know is to start off blocking it out, and just keep working smaller and smaller. Large to small.
Oh and the smudge tool is my friend heh :)

Everyone's stuff looks ridiculously cute!

Here's my second sketch. The black pearl is shaded in because it and the arm are on a different layer, so that I could draw on it without erasing the body underneath.

@walrus, very cute and very clever secret, you're hitting 2 birds with one stone: one for the comp, one to add to your boy's site:)

@okmer, great Freddy, way better than mine, plus the Dreamcatcher add on is very clever! :)

@Tatarigamy, way better now than previous pose, you can add a parchment-like background, like a prehistoric design plan for the Aliens:)

@Rayph, glad you can join in man, I have no idea what your proposed creature/monster is but it is wicked! :D

@JS Morgan, LOL, great idea using Slimer, miss the Ghostbusters all of a sudden. looking forward to your piece.

@ploon, you have the general idea for painting and it's a good start, make sure to separate vital parts of your overall piece as layers to save time/effort and work your way to the finer details once you have more ideas come in.good start! :)

@ryansumo, cute! and the bathtub kinda looks like a ship of his own or you can make it look like one, just an idea:)

No updates, kinda low on energy with work, picking up the pace tomorrow, great ideas all around, keep it up guys:)

thanks Dwinbotp - I remembered to start using layers, so I'm working from the back to the front as this
seems to make sense.
Yours is an awesome idea mate! Love em to bits!

Walrus - love him so far - damn cute:)
Davek - Thats is so cool...and fast!!!
Segawa - heheh very cute - I dont envy having to paint all that fur though!
Jessart - this is gonna be a competition full of people going "awww aint he sweet" heheh....But aint he sweet!
Okmer - cute cute - love the dreamcatcher too

walrus
02-06-2009, 08:22 AM
Ryan - That's working a lot better: That face is terrific! The lower half is getting lost - does the Black Pearl need to be so large? What if you made it smaller and showed his feet more, maybe even making them a bit larger?

Okmer - Glad I could convince you to join this one. That sketch is just about perfect. There's only one thing that could make it better, imho: Open the read-end flap! :)

Davek - It's looking nice and it's great you've gotten so far. I'm really confused about the lighting. There are no shadows from the hands and arms on his face, yet one hand is fully in the light and the other hand is all in shadow. Also, your two hands, and especially the two wrists/forearms seem completely different sizes, more than perspective would account for.

yeah, lots of great stuff popping up from all over the place.
I just discovered that in fact I just fu...... love monsterbabies!!!haha.

Actually while working on it suddenly I said....:"hey,.. why does he have to be cute at all price man?"

It isn't because he's little he's cute!
(I know what I'm talking about, got 4 little monsters at home:confused: :D :)
And if he's gonna end up as such a big bad & mean motta.......... later on, the chances are high after all he wasn't that cute neither as a baby
Anyway, lots of fun doing this:D
Here he is burning down his future victims defenses!
Preparing his path.

I started to clean up my lines before I start color
Usualy I don't really use lines but i wanted to try another approach.
I've put little more dramatic twist to the camera angle too.

Here is my Jabba the Hutt Baby so far.

walrus
02-06-2009, 11:23 AM
kurosagi - if that monster showed up in the movie than it counts as a movie monster. If it wasn't in the movie, it doesn't seem valid. (I haven't seen the movie, obviously.)

Edwin - The details are looking fantastic, but the color palette is all over the board. The many bright colors are pulling my eyes all over the place and making it hard to settle on any area, much less focus on the main characters. Do you really need so many colors, the real floor, and magenta and purple walls, along with the pink and blue crib and the orange and red Pooh-bear? I can see keeping the crib colors, but it might be nice if you tried toning things down to help guide the eye to the not-very-colorful main characters more.

enelo - great face! It seems odd to have such skinny arms - human babies have very pudgy arms, hands, fingers, etcetera, and adult Jabba is a lot more corpulent than the average human. Just a thought...

Ploon - i'm not getting his pose. Is he sitting up or leaning back? It looks like the latter, but I'm not sure how his body is being held up. Maybe he needs a pillow behind him? Also, his arms look huge compared to the rest of his body.

dwinbotp
02-06-2009, 11:44 AM
Thanks Mike, Actually I was hoping to see if someone noticed the bright colors, and wondering if it's too "candy". I'm used to churning out pieces frequently and I get bored rather quickly if I stay on a pic for too long(trying to remedy that) and I agree with you completely, got carried away with stuff all around. it's so fun to draw ordinary stuff we see everyday really!!:D Will desaturate and see how it turns out, thanks again for the insight!

Okmer, that baby Freddy is looking sweet! One, two, Okmer is coming for you-

Tatarigamy, thanks! The queen aline, awesome!!

walrus, I took your comment and applied it on my piece. I think it's so much stronger now. Thanks!!

Ploon, thank you. Cheers!

Also the background lighting and the overall color pass have been altered.

Thanks for the comments and crits guys.

I've tried to give him a baby face but it looks more like a little boys.
Madeirandre has captured the babyface proportions really well and is probably where I should have headed in my 'sketch'.

http://fc17.deviantart.com/fs40/f/2009/037/e/8/nosferatwo_by_Oeleaus.jpg

Okmer - Great composition! That's a tough angle but it works, building anticipation.

walrus
02-06-2009, 07:24 PM
Samson - That's working a lot better than your fist shot, especially the one on the right. The one on the left looks like he has a giant brain... the right one a little too, because the features are low on the face, and because of the slope 9or lack of0 of the forehead. If you really wanted to go infantile, you could also make the nose smaller.

One other thing you might think about is raising his right elbow a lot higher, so that the doll has a clean silhouette without the arm behind it.

David79, I don't think Darkness should be so pleased to see a toy unicorn. He thinks of them as disgusting, foul creatures. I'd like to see him ripping the horn off, making a mess of the fluffy stuffing.

Maybe sneaking up on the unicorn would work. But I think ripping the horn off would be more in character.

Tatarigamy - hmm that is a difficult one. Something generic that would suit both of them? They're strong enough characters to be able to do this.

One thing that I cant help thinking is that they both seem to be reacting to something in the room.
There seems to be a point between them where both their attentions are fixed, as if its amusing them.
How about something odd/funny that they could be looking at? I cant think what but it would bring the
piece together if there was something there (you'd probably already planned that!)

Very nice work so far guys. I decided to work from the movie C.H.U.D. as its one of the first horror movies I remember watching as a youngster. I would say I'm probably 85% done at this point. I want to refine the hands a bit more and just clean it up.

Oh and I'm thinking of renaming it C.H.U.B. (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Babies) :D

YOU GUYS ARE EFFING AWESOOOOOOOME!

Anyhoo. Here's my update. Some great advice from walrus was to make the ship somewhat smaller, so that it's not blocking baby davy as much. Somoene also suggested that the perspective on the bathtub was off, so I fixed that as well, then thought that the bathub being in that position wasn't really great composition wise so I cropped in a little bit, and I think it looks much better. My only worry is that the bathtub isn't so obvious now, but does it really matter? C&C definitely appreciated!

AlexJH - I like how he's coming so far. Great proportions. You have both your rattle and your bottle perfectly horizonal/vertical. It deadens the image soemwhat, as those are not vary dynamic angles. You may want to, for example, hold the rattle up more so that it's at an angle and not perpendicular to the bottom of the page: It would make the composition more interesting.

obeyurnapster - cute design so far. you could probably get away with makign the bear's head larger, but overall looks nice!

ploon - coming along nicely. cute face!

ryansumo - that's looking really happy and cute. The Black Pearl is drawn as a perfect side view when the camera angle is overhead, not straight ahead. It would work better to show more top of the ship to match the camera. Also, his right foot is getting lost and hard to read.

Gill - Well, they're not cute, but incredibly well rendered. Nice camera angle and lighting, and a great shiny effect on the skin. Nicely done!

Dan - Thanks! I don't really think the rattle is necessary. If he doesn't look like a baby now, the rattle isn't going to sell it more, and I don't want anything to interfere with the silhouette of the Nerf-blades. And yes, I was trying to make it look like armor. He's an armored Predator baby.

Walrus - I was just about to say that I thought your Predator looks more like a toddler than a baby; but I guess that's by intention? If I were you, I'd try a quick paintover to see what he looks like being a bit chubbier/bigger head with an (armor pattern) pajama. The whole body and proportions just don't strike me as being as funny as the big eyes and teethless mouth at the moment.

walrus
02-08-2009, 10:29 AM
Joey - Thanks, that's an interesting idea, although one that would have been a little more useful after my last three posts instead of now. I used "toddler" in the title because it was a good pun, and because I have a toddler around the house right now who's just hit his twos... but my proportions are based more on pictures of him when he was 20-30 weeks old. Toddlers are a lot taller and have a lot smaller head-to-body ratio than what I have here. My proportions here may not be fully exaggerated cartoony giant-head baby proportions and instead are more real-world baby proportions, but I like them.

Hey, first time joining one of these Mini Challenges, but this one looked really fun! I love everyone's renditions of the baby monsters. I'm thinking of joining with Audrey II from Little shop of Horrors, 1986 version, if no one's chosen him already. I'll have some sketches ready to show tonight!

Took your advice Walrus on tweaking the angle, I hadn't even noticed they were perpendicular like that before. Also changed my concept of what the legs would be like, I was originally just going to have little paws at the length of the original image, but gone for a splayed sittign baby kind of kind of position. Thoughts?

I usually just 'lurk' bc im busy, but I thought Id join in this one. It looks fun. This is my wip, still playing with stuff. Any crits would be great.

Walrus: I love the pastel colors and the tagline humor.

Alexjh: The one thing Im seeing is it seems like the light sources are very bright
hot, and his bottle, toes on both feet and part of his tail might benefit from reflecting the light a little. I like the colors though and the sense of light you have already. (Im not sure I want to know whats in the bottle. :D )

Walrus - Looks fantastic man, quick question did you use the pastel brushe's in Painter or did you do it in photoshop??

Im definitly not happy with it, anatomy sucks, cant ref anywhere  .
And I cant find the right way of painting that fits me..

But still ill finish it, so here's a progresshot, its 66,6% so thats why its noisy at the edges.
And on my Imac screen the picture has way more contrast and is a bit darker, any tips on this problem?? The document is in sRGB-etc., thats the right one right?

TIPS PLEASE, also on: 'How to make a Alien more baby-like  '

@ Walrus, nice coloring man, love it. Wish I could get that effect..

Aftermath - Someone above did say they were going to, but no art to be seen yet.

Gregs - Mine was all done in Photoshop. I'm not sure who yours is supposed to be but the top and bottom feel mismatched. The legs look really short and pudgy, which fits a younger body, but the arms fell long and skinny and the head adult proportioned.

Alex - The rattle looks better, but now it looks like the bottle is buried in a fold in his crotch, not actually sitting in front of him. Also, 2ndBanana had some good points about lighting.

Tatarigamy - looking good. It strikes me as slightly odd that they're both the same size and that the queen's head is smaller than the "worker" alein's head. She's the Queen, shouldn't she be a lot larger than "him?"

I hope that I am not too late to enter the contest (this is my first contest, I discovered GameArtisants just recently)

This is my take: I have drawn baby Hellboy, then I remembered that this is bad guy contest (note to self: read more carefully). So I had to come with different idea and here it is: Ring Wraith from "Lords of the Rings". Pencil sketch so far, I plan to color it in a next few days.

Joey - Thanks, that's an interesting idea, although one that would have been a little more useful after my last three posts instead of now.
Sorry - I have this nasty habit of waiting with replying until I've got an update to show, so I only jumped into action when you said you were done.
Personally, I think diapers, rattlers and all that are half the fun of this challenge, so it's a bit of a shame that you clad him in armour, but if you're happy with your entry, who am I to disagree :) ? You've still got a kickass entry.

...With that said, my nasty habit plays up again:

Joey: Coming along quite nicely. Although, to me, he's in a weird pose with his arms in the air like that. Also, it looks as though his legs have been amputated at the knees.
I think a child with blades for arms would cut him/herself a lot, so maybe add some band aids/scars. I can't imagine giving birth to this child :o.

David79: I love the looks on the unicorns face :D. I really admire the cleanness of your style.

It's good to see the steady flow of entries coming in.

Walrus - Looks great! The expression works really well and the overall colour scheme is light and easy on the eye.

Joey Spijkers - I like the dark mood you've created and the tonal modelling is really effective. It's kind of unnerving seeing that character as a baby, well done!

David79 - very schmick! The work around the unicorns eye/face is especially good.

Here is the first quick drawing of the clown from IT. I have posted a reply like 2 times now.. I guess thats not how you post something. so i guess im trying this quick reply now to see if it works. First time ever entering into a comp of any kind on here. So yeah! let me know what you think. I wasn't sure what I was going to make him hold. but now I decided it will be balloons in one hand and then him waving with the other hand from the part in the movie when he is standing in the water. Pestibug - nice rendering and great expression! It might just be the perspective, but the legs to me feel huge compared to the arms and head. You could consider scaling them down and seeing hoe the proportions feel then.

Tatarigamy -That's better, but I think there's one other thing you could try: The front alien's forehead feels bulgingly large compared to the queen's forehead. What if you just shrunk just that one part down, without reducing the rest of it?

Greg - You noted you were having trouble with the skin color. I think one thing that's getting you off in the wrong direction is that you're treating him like a normal human child. In the film, i seem to recall this skin was super-pale:

http://images.starpulse.com/Photos/Previews/Edward-Scissorhands-bh05.jpg

Try taking down the saturation a bunch, cooling if down some, and see how that works for you. I think you could end up something a lot more pale like Edward.

War noodle - It's a good start! I don't think you quite have the shape of his left eye just yet.

Jessart - Nice work so far... both on your entry and on your home repair projects, which are more important. :) if you have time, it might be nice to include some buildings or something else to give a good sense of scale.

Tatarigamy - Love how its coming along, your details are excellent

Greg2504 - Really nice! I've got to agree with Walrus about the skin colour though,
Edward had a rather "drained" appearance. Needs to be more anaemic:)

Stormrider, your gollum looks a bit too old to me. Like a teenage gollum with an oversized head. Maybe you should try to make his limbs a bit shorter and stubbier, feet and hands should be equal sized. The pose is maybe a bit too difficult for a baby/toggler.

While I like this idea, I can't stop but wondering if making his jacket oversized would add cuteness. Like, long slobbering sleeves and all that :)

Raul: THe violator clown is a nice idea, but right now the proportions you have are not baby-ish enough. The clown in itslef is already a fat stubby guy. He's not that far off from baby proportions really. Look around at the other works, you probably see there's a trick to making baby's (errrr..)

Basically, oversize the head, big eyes, stubby round limbs. Those are the basics for making baby forms. Hope this helps :)

Warnoodle: Nice work on pennywise, only suggestion I have is to sharpen up the legs. Right now it looks blurred, but not in a really good way imo. Maybe go back in and bring out some detail in the legs?

Cowboyorange: Nice idea, but overall, his proportions are too much of an adult/teen. See the tips I gave raul to get those adorable proportions :)

Jessart: I dig godzilla baby! Yeah he's got the spirit in him alright ;) Maybe as a little, joke, add a tower of buildingblocks he just smashed? After all, when he grows up he'll be smashing buildings, a lifetime of practise! :D

Ilegacy: Baby ent, that's a touch one, but you nailed it. Maybe he is a bit on the big side. Anyway, a suggestion, how about a full head of leaves? After all I imagine ents starting out like saplings, all fresh and leavy. :)

Right, phew, that's all, very cool work everyone! (sorry for the late reply)

I'm so pissed. I downsample to 500x500 to show updates so that the pics are much more efficient on the site, and I just found out that I'd accidentally forgot to undo and go back to 1000x1000! I'm probably gonna leave it at this for now, but sometime in the future, I'm go to try to see if I can upsample, maybe to 800x800 and try to salvage this work for my portfolio.

Unless anyone has any glaring mistake they'd like to point out, this is it for me. I need to work tomorrow because on Thursday I'll be going to the beach! Thanks to walrus, dwinbot, and everyone else who commented and made suggestions!

Oh, wow, look at al the new entries! Because I'd got into my head that this was a really short comp to give us some breathing room before the DW4 mini, I somehow thought the deadline was yesterday, not next monday. And I've already submitted my final... Oh, well, guess I got my breathing room! :D

Catwoman - welcome! that's just creepy. (in an appropriate way.) Now that you've taken it this far, you could try some more sophisticated coloring/painting on it, instead of just flat shades.

Ryan - That's what I was talking about! :)

Stripe from the Gremlins.

Not sure about the body though, specially the hands and feet but maybe I can think of a way to fix it while coloring.

Niarbon - Welcome! You will probably save yourself a lot more time by doing some more sketches before committing to coloring. Sketches don't take long to do, and coloring a sketch that's not working isn't going to magically make it better. Your proportions are not very baby-like at all - I would have guessed that this was an adult Gremlin because the limbs are so long and slender. You might want to try looking at some photos of babies to get a feel fro the different proportions.

Thank you. I should sketch more, they told me in school too, think I like the coloring better so want to start that asap, need to get that pattern out of my system.
Gremlins do have very long limbs and body, so I thought maybe the baby should have longer then normal babies too, but now you point it out I see it should be even shorter and chubbier to make it more babylike.

my wip for Freddy.

Tatarigamy; ha, took your advice and pulled him from the background so Im thinking he looks more like the focal point now.

StormRider: nice. Is that the lich king he's holding?:D Interested to see where you take the color on this one.

ryansumo: This is coming along really nicely. One thing I'm seeing is he is not separated from the background. If the values were tweaked just a tad between foreground and background, he might pop a little more.

Just some quick random comments

ristesekuloski - That Vader looks mad(mad in the good way)

Cold - Great composition! Really great posture and placement of the babe. You coulda gone with a baby trike but I like what you've done with the full size bike, really adds to the dynamic.

WarNoodle: Looking Good. Although it does lack atmosphere. Try and play around with different lighting technique. Place an imaginary light source and add highlight and shadows from there. I think your piece would really benefit from this.

Raul: Looking pretty evil there, but not really baby-like. He looks like a grown man-thing to me. Reminds me of Manhunt.

Yongs: Very cute :).

Catwoman: You really captured the Jack Nicholson mouth there :).

J S Morgan: Nice sketch. I don't like how you tilted it tho. It feels weird. In film it's supposed to add tension, but mostly in close-up shots, not wide shots like your sketch.

Ristesekuloski: Very cool Nazgûl. Personally, i'd make the shot a little tighter - there's a lot of unnecessary space taken up by the ground at the moment.
Hehe, Darth Baby - is that a light sabre he's holding?

Ryansumo: :( that sucks about the down sample. Probably a bit late now but i think he blends too much into the background. His skin colour is quite brown and so is the wood in the BG. I think it detracts from the focal point of the piece.

Niarbon: As Walrus stated, try and make him a bit cuter. Stubby limbs and ears, oversized eyes, button nose etc. Try make him a bit pudgy too :).

Jessart: Looking better and better - but to me, his left arm is in a weird pose. It looks as though his arm is bending backwards. Not a very natural pose, especially for babies. Excellent lighting.

Cold: Great size comparison, i hope to see it in colour! :D

Samson Brown: Where's your update? I want to see more baby Count Orlok!

Dysfunctional: Thanks for the idea. I'll for sure have to add some highlights. I see what you mean now. It will be exactly what I need to make it pop more.
