Chasarsis has entered the competition!
She has been way too awesome in the last couple episodes to pass up a chance at modeling! :D

Initial idea's and sketches for her design. I'll have something more fleshed out in the coming days; and I should be done with concepting entirely by next friday.
I like your style and I'm curious to see the result ;)

Dang man, I always liked your art style and this is really coming along well, it looks awesome. I really like the new shirt you came up with and how her hair is styled, it looks nice. I'm really looking forward to the model.
I'm like your way to go, Chasarsis. It's a great idea to step aside from classic anime style with remainning cartoonish view. Good luck to continue!

Thanks guys!
Here's some more concepts. Mostly worked out how I want things to look, now I need to refine stuff so I don't have to think about the design too much come modeling :D
[Color concept]

I really like number 4 and 5. 4 Goes with the shirt's design, and 5 might offer me some cool color choices

4, for sure. Efficient to make look good lowpoly, and will keep the silhouette interesting.
The color study is great. Personally I'd make the face a little shorter.

@Tryforce: Hopefully cuten'd up the lips in this version. Though I might not get it right until the final concept =O
@Thanks!
@SupRore: 4 it is!
@Hito: Thanks dude! Hope I worked out that issue in the new version =)
Tried painting more. And I'm playing with goggle designs. Really like 5 and 8, and a little bit of 9.

hehe , her face looks like :( now , give her atleast abit smiling into the painting.
the nose is fine i think now, as for your style =)
as for the Glasses, you need to get glasses wich follow the for of the eyebrowns, so you probably cant miss anything. (thats how i learned it)
I like 4th most but the glasses are to far away for me.

09-12-2007, 01:27 AM
@tacit math: Thanks; I've finally learned that having second thoughts about my iffy designs two days from a contest deadline isn't really conducive to my sanity . . . or finishing. And I always do, so here's to fixing that :inocent:
@Tryforce: Thanks :D I'll give her some personality in the next round of sketches. And I'll also play around with the goggles some more.

I love how you infused your own style into the design yet it still feels like Sakura chan:). I'm not sure if you plan on doing this but It would be cool to work in her head protector somehow, maybe as a belt or shoulder strap.

She is really one very stylish character.
I like it so much that I keep coming back for more.:thumb:

Thanks guys :)
@izuka: Thanks dude! I gotta push what I got
@shadowbreeze: Don't worry. I'll definitely finish this time. Count on it :thumb:
@Marcus Dublin: Thanks! I was worried for awhile that adding the extra elements might have swayed from the design too far. And the head band still there on the head, its just kinda hidden from the views I drew :inocent:
@Kerepres: Lol, thanks!
Done with concepting! I think. There are a couple things I'm still a little iffy about, like the goggles (currently leaning towards 4 and 9) and whether the cloth on her bum and the jacket are going to have designs on them, but I think those are issue's I can handle in the modeling stage.
I won't have a chance to work on the modeling till monday, so critiques and suggestions strongly encouraged and welcomed :D
I also wanted to practice painting more, but I ran out of time.

I think you have a solid base here to start modeling with. The only thing I find strange is why are her clothes so thick? And her apron around her waste looks a little strange. I realize it's a designy thing, but I am not sure if it is made of cloth, plastic or metal. When you get onto the model, it would be cool if you defined that area more. Otherwise, everything else is looking good man. Keep up the good work and hope to see a model soon!

!BAMF!
Chasarsis
09-15-2007, 10:17 AM
@Yung: I plan to :D
@FredH: I . . . have . . . no good reason for that, beyond thinking that it looked cool :doh:
I could come up with a set of reasons after the fact, but that would be more me trying to justify it, and I don't want to do that, especially if it doesn't read as "working"
I'll work on her skirt too. Its supposed to be soft leather, and I'll try some stitchery and light folding/creasing, as well as pulling of the material at the button area would help eliminate the plastic/metal feel.
@Indra: Thanks man, will do :)
@Zann: Thanks!
@Simple_minded: Thanks dude!

Hi...
Another different style of Sakura.
I like her eye glasses number 2....
You have a very unique style, very nice. Just and observation, Sakura and googles put me in the mind of Trinity from The Matrix... lol... bullet time jutsu.

Chasarsis the mesh is looking great so far!! Keep it up!!
I'm diggin' this. Your 2d and 3d styles are synonymous. Your topology appears to be flawless. From the front, her bangs look fine. My only crit is from the back view the bangs look far forward as if coming from the forehead - lack of balance, but this may be an optical illusion due to angle and color.
@ typhus - "googles"...lol .... if it was the Matrix, she would literally be surfing online
CoachCarter9
09-20-2007, 07:51 AM
Using the forehead protector as an armband might help to break up the symmetry of the model a little bit as well. Might help accent that "bad $#$" feel you are trying to go for. Also are you going to incorporate her "O" symbol on her back or anywhere else?
Basemesh looking solid Charsarsis. Now get sculpting! We are all waiting for your update :D
Chasarsis
09-26-2007, 08:26 PM
Thanks guys! Ran into a couple issues using Zbrush, so I switched over to Mudbox and redid the sculpt, and fixed a couple of problems with the mesh in the process. Still some overall changes to make, but hopefully I'll be able to move onto the low poly tommorow, and normal mapping soon after
@God Phoenix: I think I see what you're talking about. I do have one pair of filler hair clumps coming from the same place as the main ones, and hopefully the changes I made + the work on the sculpt reduced that effect.
@Coachcarter: That's true, but I was thinking of breaking up the symmetry in more subtle ways. Mostly with the length of the hair, her satchel and some elements of the texture
And yep, the O is gonna be on there =o

This is looking good Chasarsis, my only crit would have to be the harsh wrinkle folds towards the under arm and the back area. I'm not sure what fabric her jackets supposed to be but my guess would be some sort of soft cotton or fleece. If that's the case then I would soften up the wrinkles and go for subtle broad wrinkles. Check out the reference images below, you can see that the wrinkles are almost non existent. It's not the most exciting look but the surface type can come across in the texture as well as the sculpt. If you dig around you can find some reference images of your own and go with that but I would define the fabric type first as it'll provide a foundation for everything else. Good luck man and keep up the awesome work!:)

Chasarsis

except, you know thicker :inocent:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/temetry/sakuraModel009.jpg

Thanks Kerepres, :D and I got rid of the weirdness on the boobs too
I wanna say I'm done with the low poly, but the polygon count is 4521, and I'm having trouble deciding where to add polygons that the normal map isn't already going to cover. I rounded out most of the area's where its obvious that the model isn't a hi-res, and I have plans for a couple weapons she'll be using in the final render, but nothing I have left to do seems like its going to bring me close to the limit. And I'm sticking to my original design, so I don't want to add anything to her profile, so yeah, any advice on that would be awesome. Cuz I'm at a loss

Looking very nice.
maybe its just me, or maybe it the boots, but her legs seem kind of short. her thighs seem out of proportion to the rest of her body. i know you are going for a stylized look, but it seems they could stand to be just a bit longer.
as for your extra tri you could round out the fingers a bit. make them six sided instead of four. right now even in the high poly, they seem kind of boxy. just a thought. Ultimately if you are happy with what you have, and don't think you need them for more detail, don't use them. It will make unwrapping and rigging a bit easier. after all, there is no poly minimum in this comp.
TryForce
09-30-2007, 02:42 AM
hmmm, well comparing to his style i think his 4sided Fingers are quite matching. In my point of view their not boxy, but i dont think everybody thinks the same.
But hey, you do pretty good yet bud! I dont think that you need to add polygons anymore, too. My own model has like ~4600 tris, and i think its completly fine, since my model doesnt need that much detail.
Like ydou2want2know said: there is no poly minimum, so maybe keep this count.
Now Uvwmap and bake the normal, and get us some fine Handdrawed Texturing quality! :D
Chasarsis
10-01-2007, 09:44 AM
@YdoUwant2know: I decided to bite the bullet and leave the detail level as it is, since there isn't a penalty, though I did end up using a couple polygons anyway connecting everything.
I see what you mean about the proportions seeming off for the legs. I tweaked it a bit to check it and they looked "better" but it lost some of the weight and style from the concept. I'll play around with the proportions there more once texturing is done to see if I want to lengthen them, but it was something I deliberately did when I was drawing up the turn arounds. Like I seriously had to remember to make myself move the legs down some =P
So we'll see!
@Tryforce: Thanks man! :D
Next up will be texturing update!

tbh, i dont feel the colors as the folds somehow ._. .... i may dont know much about it, but its kinda difficult to read some parts on your model. (like the red top, the hair in someway and the bellytail thing there)
the rest looks fine to me.
I havnt done ever any good Normalmapped character, so i may dont know how it may gonna end up, but i wanted to let you know about it since you still have some time so you may could fix it if needed :)

10-17-2007, 02:50 PM
This looks extremely good, but I liked the previous version a bit better. I found the colors were more united and mid waist sash looked less distracting. Also, the double circle in the back looks repetative and personally, I don't think it adds anything. Perhaps all that is needed are a bit more seams? Hope you don't mind, but I just did a small test in ps.
Overall, I think you did an exceptional piece. when done, I am sure this one will look great amongst the finals:)
I think I agree with antimagic, the colours would be better if they were kept to a more limited pallete
Give her specs a bit more shine! :P hahaa solid piece charsarsis . Now give her a sexy but dangerous pose :P

10-19-2007, 11:26 PM
@Tryforce: I didn't quite get all of what you're saying, but pointing out the lack of shadowing overall was really helpful. I tend to rely too much on the normal maps and spec maps to handle that :p Thanks man!
@Hito: :D
@Burokun: I toned it down some, thanks!
@damagecontrol: Thanks man!
@antimagic/Ged: Agreed. I've unified her colors a bit more. I think I might get rid of the green in her hair too. Love it though I do ;_;
As for the dual circles, I've stared at it for awhile now, and I haven't thought up any good alternatives. If you have any idea's I'm open to them
Thank you both
@Yung: Thanks dude! I pumped the specs on her clothes some
@Defeat: Thanks!
@Frozan: I'm not sure I can agree, but I'm flattered =O
Anyways, got rid of the goggles for good. I don't think I've kept her design close enough to the original to afford that that kind of deviation without her becoming totally unrecognizable . . . assuming she isn't too a great extent already.
Upped the spec, added an AO pass to the most area's of the texture, and further cleaned up. I still need to work on the hair; it could definitely use more detailing
Also thinking up base designs. Somehow I neglected to include that stage of modeling in my planning phase. Shame on me >_<

On an off, and slightly panicked note, does anyone how to render this out when it has an hlsl shader applied to it using Max's default scanline render (or mental ray). I came upon this problem a couple weeks ago, and I haven't been able to solve. I thought I've dealt with already, but I was wrong. Epically wrong.
I'm using Max 8, and I tried rendering it out in Max 9 and 10 to no avail

hey as far as i know you can not do it i use max, i believe there for real time only, but in saying that there is away to do it:D first in your material editor change your standard material to a mental ray one and then click on the surface slot and you should then see a shader to material option in the list provided and then of course choose your textures and wham, i must admit i don't know how could it will represent your shader.:eek:
of course if anyone knows a better way please correct me so i to can know too
i can do some screen grabs if you need
Chasarsis
10-22-2007, 10:53 PM
Thank you all :)
@Thatdon: I forgot about that =O I'll definitely deal with that for when I'm placing it in my portfolio.
@shadowbreeze: Thanks a bunch dude :D I didn't see a mental ray option in my materials though (Like the "standard" and "directx 9" ones) so I puttered around with the default max shader before deciding I wasn't going to get it looking like the hlsl shader in time. I also tried getting into unreal 3, but it wasn't looking the way I wanted there either, so I just let it go and went with viewport renders. I did learn unreal ED is incredible easy and hella fun though :D
Anyways, submitted at t-20 minutes; working on the last poses almost killed me ;_;

nice style, one of my favorite. anyway you did the specular in RGB,n what's the different with the B/W specular? how you did that? any tutorial link for this? :)
Chasarsis
10-22-2007, 11:18 PM
The color in the spec subtly influences the color in the diffuse, and the color of light that "shines" or "reflects" off the model. Like, since I wanted the skin to have a white shine, I made the spec for the skin have the complementary color, which was more or less a blue.
I'm probably not a hundred percent right; there's no tutorial I found on it, mostly I've just been observing what other modelers do, and testing the colors myself to see how things turned out, or asking them :p
There should be a thread created on this ^^

Thanks you guys :)
Its worth noting I edited the first two images; there was a horrible seam on the forehead I completely overlooked in the end because I wasn't able to fix it earlier on. Someone pointed it out to me a couple minutes ago though, and playing around with it in the uv editor made me realize that somehow the faces had been flipped. I don't know why >_>

Try, Yung :D Thanks
@Bigtoe: Yep. I did drop a slight shadow on the foot in the Winning pose with photoshop so that it didn't look like it was floating though.
