So ive been a weapon and enviroment modeller for about 6 months and now since looking round these forums ive been really inspired to do some character modelling but i dont know where to start. can anyone help me:think:

Get MudBox maybe, was fairly easy to get to grips with...

It's a good tutorial to be sure. It's a classic. However, beyond the face, it doesn't adhere much to edge loop design. I strongly suggest that you also study this thread: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=25&t=38469
If you look at the way the models are crafted you'll notice some patterns. That thread is gold covered in candy and even more gold. :)
If you've got some money, go for some of the Gnomon character modeling DVDs. They're great, especially the Ian Joyner ones that relate to ZB & 3dsmax. Kurv Studios also makes a good character modeling one based around Silo, though relevant to all apps really.
