I'm working on a model that i would like to produce a high quality non-lit render for. What i mean is, if you look at the in-game look for world of warcraft obviously their is no real time lighting there. and thus you see no edges or planes on the character unless its from the shillouette. Is it possible to get a render like this out of maya 8.0 and up?
I guesss I'm really just trying to showcase the hand painted textures on my model and am having trouble with getting rid of shadows & lighting in my renders... I feel like i'm going to end up having to just turn the lights off in my actual viewport and use screen grabs for final image compositing... is their a better way?

First and foremost dont be fooled, Blizzard does light world of warcraft its just they dont rely on the lighting to make the textures work because they are hand painted shadows. If you play wow stand outside of Orgrim and you will see the day shift on the terrain. The lighting is most visible at that area ive found in the game. If you want to learn how to hand paint better i suggest you search (Walrus) he is a oldschool Blizzard guy who has a tutorial on his website that teaches you some of the tips of the trade.
I hope this information helps you.

Yup, texture tutorial in the link below. Can't tell you how to do anything in Maya, though... but in Max, I bake both lights and ambient occlusion (each separately) into a texture, use it as a layer in my texture painting. Then, for things like mini-comps here, I find that making the texture partially self-illuminated (~50%) for the renders gives me a good result that combines environment lighting with the texture map. Hope that helps: good luck!

In the Material:
Diffuse All the way 100%
Ambient Colour all the way up to 50-100%. (based on how much shading you actually want).
In the viewport menu, go to
Shading>Hardware Texturing> Click on the box.
Chose Unfiltered in the dropdown menu.
Then come back here n' let me know how that works out for youz.

For Maya :
Gray background: Render : Select your current camera> Attribute Editor > CameraShape > Environnement > Background Color (and pick color)
No anti-aliasing: Render : Hotbox > Window > rendering Editor > Render Settings > Maya software > Anti-aliasing Quality > Low quality
No texture filtering: Viewport : Hotbox > Shading > Hardware Texturing > Texture Filter > Unflitered
That will let you see your diffuse textures the way I think you are wanting them to look.
(here's an example of that)
