Damn...I just realized I picked the most fundamentally uncool character design.

Here's a color and silhouette study. More to come.

actually Lee is one of the most interesting persons i think xD

He should come like a cheap fuzzy brown infront of you, means roundish funny eyes, biiiiigg eyebrowns, as he always makes suck a smile: :>
his eyes sohuld be hidded with fireelement ^^

Also making him in a brucelee position will make more fun of him, also he never smiles within a fight!!!! he always is seriuos when he fights!!! you made him just smiling and acting completly different!

Also his nose is to much noticeable right now. Also Lee wasnt looking buffed like this, he maybe has great definations, but he is not buffed in my opinion.

otherwise i really like the colors and design!!!!

This is really rockin man (pardon the pun). It definitely has a really strong rock lee feel to it and you mixed it up a good bit to make it fresh. I'm really looking forward to seeing the 3d and texturing from you. Keep up the awesome work :D.

Awesome, Snowfly. I think you could push his silhouette a bit more, still.

You made a simple green suit kid into a really wicked fighter. The new suite design is great! (top one) Hope you will continue

im really digging this one!!!!

Snowfly

Thanks TryForce. :) I'm really trying to like the idea of keeping his eyes circular but it isn't my cup of tea. I'm sorta leaning towards the random asian guy dressed up as Rock Lee look, like this...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/chrisdejoya/Concept-4.jpg

Still exploring other ideas.

SupRore

Hey snowfly, this is looking really great. I definitely wouldn't confine yourself with the round eyes. It's pure anime stylization, and would be really hard to realize in 3d with your style. Personally, though, without the round eyes, I'd try to keep the eyebrows as close to the original concept as possible.

I'm really loving your concepts so far dude, especially that first one. He's fricking hilarious, and you kind of give him a new personality :D

Yung

Looking real good on the outcome, Snowfly! The first concept reminds me a lot of the old anime characters, where the shonen story is usually about youth, and the face reflects that!

I personally would love to see the second one developed, as the last somehow does indeed look like someone else cosplaying as Rock lee, but SupRore made a good point.

I definitely like this one the most, but either way I know this piece will be amazing. I'm really looking forward to the 3d on this guy. My only critique would be to be mindful of his leg-warmers. In the anime that is where he keeps enormous weights. You could axe them if you want, or just kinda work them back in a little more to your concept.

Other then that, if you did want to go with the smaller more realistic eyes, you could always switch over to Malto Gai. He looks very similar to Rock, but without the eyes of course. It could save some criticism from the anime purists while not taking a whole lot of time to switch the concept over to. Just a thought.

This is looking bad ass Dude. I love the muted green. Did you Know he is a Master of Drunken Style? Sorry that's a bit of a spoiler if you haven't seen too far into the series, but It's one of the coolest aspects of Rock Lee and would make for some fun Design choices. It's cool to have him have a bottle of Sake. And yeah stick with normal eyes. Great stuff!

Thanks guys. I'm still trying to choose between muted green and olive green.

Josh - Hehe, yeah I just saw the drunken master clips on youtube. Still knocking around ideas so I'll definitely try a sake'd version.

Anywho, just a quick concept sculpt to see how large I can comfortably bring the eyes in Zbrush. At least now I know, this is definitely not the look I'm after. :lucky:

K, a bit of an unnecessary step here since nothing was added to the concept, time to get to modeling I guess.

Cheers tryforce, i might've bumped up the saturation too much since i'm working on a laptop monitor. will definitely keep that mind when i finalize the colors on the texture maps.

SupRore
09-12-2007, 10:57 AM
I agree with tryforce, snow. The desaturated look in the first concept was really cool, for the design. Whichever way you go, though, this is still looking awesome. :)

Okay spent a couple of hours on these. Just trying to bridge the concept a little closer to the original Rock Lee. And I'm still undecided about the head.

TryForce
09-17-2007, 02:07 AM
yeh the head doesnt look like lee at all, get his backhair more in beatles stlye, wich is kinda a second shape of the head:

http://www.animegalleries.net/album/773/img/43
-Backhair more like a second headshape
-forhair more longer
-smoothout the ear area

nice ref so far!

Laying down the all important volumes, and I ran out of time. Costume change again. I've picked a definite direction I want to take this guy, it's a surprise. :)

Snowfly
09-19-2007, 11:42 AM
Nearly done with the base mesh, and I'm out of time again. In case it's not clear yet, I'm dressing him up in Akuma's gi and accessories. Well it was a nice idea in theory anyway, and I'm having fun so I'll go through with it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/chrisdejoya/Mesh2.jpg

Ignore the silly facial features. They are placeholders while I figure out nice looking proportions for his face, without the modeling.

SupRore
09-19-2007, 10:20 PM
I really liked the outfit in your ortho concept, snowfly. Whatever you go with, though, I'm sure it'll look pretty great. Keep updating! :)

Yung
09-20-2007, 08:26 AM
Yeah I agree with SupRore, that somehow the model sheet's outfit looks somehow better. Still I am sure you know which direction to head to. Good luck and we shall all be waiting.

Snowfly
09-20-2007, 12:15 PM
Thanks for the input. So I did a couple proof of concept sketches in my sketchpad today, and the Akuma spin with all the Rock Lee accessories on it looks like a-word. So looks like it'll be the jumpsuit after all.

Started hammering the head sculpt into shape. The hair is only a volume test for now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/chrisdejoya/Mesh3.jpg

And the proof of concept before writing off the idea completely...

09-20-2007, 01:29 PM
Hey man, how are you?
I did'n liked the hair style, you're doing a little division in the front...look kinda strange for me (just personal opinion). Beatles style would be better.
The eyes could be a little rounder too.
I think the other costume is better too.
Sorry for being a pain in the ass, LOL
I liked your concepts man!

Snowfly
09-21-2007, 11:37 PM
Hiya neo raziel, I plan to fill in the hair in front with planes.

Did some work on the sculpt. I'm taking a breather to learn how to merge the subtools together. Yeah this is my first normal mapped character...but I'm in it to learn.

Proportion wise he looks pretty wimpy, give that boy some meat!

Snowfly
09-22-2007, 10:58 AM
Hey Don thanks for that. I'm trying to find a balance between toned and gangly.

Argh, so many mistakes I made along the way.

-How do I assign UV groups at this point? Can I export my high poly meshes, UV them in another app, and import back in to ZB? I need those group masks.
-The retopo tut on ZB central only applies to base meshes. Is there any way to merge the head to the body?
-How do I bake the tattered cloth to an alpha?
-If I want the face to animate, should I have modeled him with his mouth open and with the eyelids shut?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v353/chrisdejoya/Sculpt2.jpg

I'll start on the hands, bandages, feet, and socks tomorrow. But for now...sleep!

BiG ToE
09-22-2007, 11:47 AM
for your alphas, you should be able to make a oppacity map from your normal map. What I mean is, after you create your normal map, you will see where the ripps in the pants are, using that, you can paint in your black and white for the alpha.

as for animation, your fine modeling it with eyes open, mouth closed, just make sure you have enough geo in the eye area to close them, and geo in the mouth, to open it.

Khanongsouk
09-22-2007, 02:39 PM
here's a plug in to merge objects in your subtools together.

http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=46932&page=1&pp=15&highlight=combine+subtool

make sure none of your tools/objects have the same names. once you get them merged you have to export it then re import it again for it to work with the topology tools. or you can just export the high res mesh to another app and merge them there. you could re topologize in zbrush or do what i do
-export the lowest subd of the head and body to another app
-combine and weld the points together so it's one seamless mesh
-re import it into zbrush
-select it as the topo under topology
-adjust the projection range under projection to around .02
-go to adaptive skin and press preview
-bump up the division level to whatever you want
-adjust projection range if needed (you have to unpress preview)
-press make adaptive skin when done and smooth out and seams

viola! one seamless mesh. :thumb:

wakkakakakaka we got same matter, but i've exploded all part in z-brush, the gud points is i can export parts by parts to my main 3d program, i can change my uv. at there. and i prefer to bake the normal at max.. the result is smoother then in z-brush, although more work.
especially in hi poly... my max feel like wanna die.
anybody, i need help in exporting the normal maps from z-brush. hehehehe help please

SupRore
09-24-2007, 01:02 PM
Yo snowfly, why not just UV the lowpoly and use projections, like normal? If you do it in Max, you can bake an alpha channel too, four birds with one stone.
