Snowfly : Lol, what a sweet coincidence. Tks man and good luck to you too. :)

Marcus Dublin: Hopefully man. ^^

Aite, waddup people! Comp based on one of my fav manga. 1st character that just hit me is Rock Lee. Always dig his character being a taijutsu (hand to hand combat) ninja. And of course the Bruce Lee similarities.

Here's my initial sketch of him Will do a further breakdown of him later.

really like your direction, Although make him more and more like Bruce lee, means the pose like he is a freaking strong fast ape.

Also i think the alchohl drink should be protected in some better place ^^ , how about a poket size and inside of his jacket or something.

keep it up!

I like the style a lot man, but with the eyes the way they are it looks much more like a Gai redesign. Rock's eyes are very unique to him and really distinguish him from other characters.

I like your sketches.

I've seen alot of different fan art on the web of this guy and he always looks so silly because of his eyes. He's definitely a cool character though and I think that what your doing with the style looks good. However I do agree with everyone else about the eyes though, it would definitely be cool if you could somehow keep those bugeyes and incorporate that into your style.

Good luck, can't wait to see more.

TryForce: Tks man! Need to get Rock pose to look as fast as Bruce Lee. Cool idea about a pocket alcohol bottles but I was going to the old school Hong Kong Kung Fu with the bottles. Will keep that in mind. :)

Eclipse: Tks! Hmm, I didnt think how distinguishable his eyes are. Yup change!

Argon: Tks! Agreed and those pearly eyes are back!

shadowbreeze: Tks man! Yup spot on the jumpsuit.

asstornado: Tks man. At first when I drew those pearly eyes, it feels weird but after a few tries, it seems to fit . I guess its really Rock Lee's trademark.

vat1: Tks! Yup Captain Harlock is a cool dude.

MaxH, Marcus Dublin, ThatDon, Sorenson: Tks guys for the comments! :D

Aite, did more sketches of Rock Lee and sketch 5 more looks to him. And of course those pearly eyes are in. So people, critiques and comments most welcome. Hope u dig it!

Actually i dig alot on all of those, even i saved quite a few of them as for ideas.

I will collect those i really dig from each:
1. -Damn this Vest and Bandages-gloves as the belt area! really like those
2.-the Vest is very detailed and his style whole clean, but not for his personality ^^
3. - no comment , sorry
4.-Now the Bottle looks great as the mood and his whole apearence, dunno how you could mix it with the other ones though.
5.-HOT PANTS,SHOES,GLOVES, And Forehead protector style!!! amazing!
6. YEHH Brucelee more-like! I like his belt apearence with all this fancy stuff as the shirt!

Damn you are really a great artist!

these are all really nicely defined sketches, personally I prefered the normal eyed version, it just looked more natural and less ...freaky. Im also finding it quite difficult adapting this anime style to something more complicated and interesting, this is quite a challenge!

09-08-2007, 07:11 PM
3 and 6 are my favorites...the 6th one reminds me of Kill Bill in the costume a bit. Nice stuff. The adjustments from the first round of sketches to the second are noticable and in a good direction. Can't wait to see this going forward to color. Nice.

as a drawing I love no.5. Interesting concept of a young lanky boy not often drawn with such sensitivity. His clothing and gadgets are well put together. Anyhow, your drawings are all good so you have a good start and it will be exciting to see what you finalize.

Awesome work on all of them, I would have to say 3 and 5 are my favorites so far. It's really awesome work man, I love your ideas and style, I only wish I could one day achieve that level of awesomeness on my sketches.

FredH
09-08-2007, 11:24 PM
Scorn, these concepts are looking really good, but it would also be cool if you tried a less clustered item approach for a few of them. For example, it could be interesting if instead of putting sacks and straps all over him, you gave him patterns in the clothing themselves so that you can keep things looking simple, but at the same time, give him details to make this character stand out. I find right now, you are really trying to make a simple character look more loaded so that he has more interesting things to look at. Patterns and engravings in metal items can accomplish this just as well as small seperate items. Anyways, it's just a thought. You are doing a really cool job on all these concepts. Hope you will finish this one because I am sure it's going to be really cool man!

dfacto
09-09-2007, 03:59 PM
Really nice work man. I'm really digging 3 and 6. I think they both read as Rock Lee the most, without cluttering him up with too much equipment like the first few, or making him too outlandish like 5 does. Whatever you choose to do I'd throw in the glasses though. They are so Rock Lee I'm surprised they haven't shown up in the manga already.

Kerepres

TryForce: Tks man for the beefy comments and the kind words! I am gonna sort em out.

Ged: Tks man. I understand you. Its hard because despite the anime characters being simple, they have a lot of exaggerated expressions that doesn't transition smoothly to more real life characters. So I guess it helps to keep some of the anime looks.

brian_h: Tks man. Yup no 6 in Kill Bill or Bruce Lee in "Game of Death". Insecure in colours but will see how it goes.

Amethyst: Tks man, hopefully the one I choose doesnt disappoint.

Eclipse: Tks for the kind words. Just keep on practising man and don't give up. And of course there are a lot of way awesome dudes here and on the net, check them out. :)

- FredH -: Tks man for the great pointers. I will put the patterns and engravings in when I colour them. Yeah, gonna push it to the finish line.

dfacto: Tks man. Yeah those 70s glasses looks good on him. Will see how I gonna put that in the final image.

Kerepres: Tks! Cant go wrong with that.

zann: Tks man. I dig this different facet of Rock though I decided not to use this design.

Tks again for the great feedbacks. I am now at a crossroad between 3 and 6. 3 for a different look with the scarf and 6 because of it simple and of course homage to Bruce Lee jumpsuit.

So I sketch 1 of em and clean up the other. Gonna take my time before I pick one.

This is going to be pretty hard competition. But also pretty much fun :D

TryForce
09-11-2007, 01:57 PM
if i would decide between those 2, i would choose the right one.

Simply because its simple and cool. the 1st one would fit into a long story of a Boy who lived in the Woods and appareantly got into the city for about a week.

The second one is simply stylistic and cool, especially when you wanna show this in one picture this just is perfect. You actually only see pics and say: "hey man thats cool" (and in the back of the mind:" Iwant to be like that ,too")

if you are doing the second one pretty well it will be a Boom!

Seeing the Picture with this lee will make everybody say:"Hey man, thats cool, thats strong, thats sexy.... hey, I wanna be like that ,too!"

just maybe give him shoes >_<

Chasarsis
09-11-2007, 07:03 PM
I'd choose the one on the right. Its quite cool, though they're both pretty awesome in their own right. If it was an action figure design I'd say the one the left was "Travelling Rock Lee" and the one on the right was "Fighting Rock Lee"

Simply because its simple and cool. the 1st one would fit into a long story of a Boy who lived in the Woods and appareantly got into the city for about a week.

Lol!

Eclipse, dfacto, FredH, Enma, eraQ, SpikeCB, CL1NT and dkvdeeto: Thanks a bunch guys for the feedbacks. Seems like a landslide votes for the right one. Yup, gonna add sandals on him. :D

TryForce: Tks man. I always dig your comments. Always seem to have some stories woven to it. Yup I am gonna go for the sexy one plus sandals.

Chasarsis: Tks dude. You gave a better description to both of them.

Aite, seems like "Fighting Rock Lee" is a favourite , so thats pretty much set the look. I sketch out 4 designs for his final render. I was thinking of giving it some 70's kind of movie poster feel to it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/scorn-maniac/sketch_rocklee06.jpg

As usual, fire away the Cs & Cs.

keo
09-14-2007, 03:02 PM
oh yeah, definitely 70's action movie poster ftw!

Eclipse
09-14-2007, 05:29 PM
Number two is my favorite, but I think 4 shows off the character a little bit more because of all the poses and the fact that is purely a hand-to-hand fighter. All of them look great tho, I'm itching with anticipation for some colors :D

TryForce
09-14-2007, 05:31 PM
my favorites are the 2nd and 3rd.

the second simply has the "Poster" style with Keo pointed out. Simply classic.

the third, man, This really shows off the 6 strong sides of lee with him in the middle beeing positive all the way! Dang!

Now to the critic.

the second simply has to much space left, maybe get the rocklee in the middle more into the center, so less space is left, As the left sidepic somehow needs a border wich he goes out or he has to apear in the center aswell in the background i think.

the third, its simply here about the borders wich dont seem to be in thecorner of the pic at all. like they're to open , wich means its supposed to be more then a piece of pic, wich gives the unfinished look in my opinion.

Also maybe play with the shapes of the boxes/circles of these parts.

You really have some insane skills wich keeps a happy smile in my face.

;D im happy you like my comments =)

FredH

a 70's movie poster theme would really rock! This is a terrific idea. I like 2 the best.

Spacey
09-14-2007, 10:42 PM
My vote goes to 1 and 4. Both have the dynamics to show off Rock Lee and the martial arts movie poster feel.

1 - I don't know if this was your intention, but I immediately thought of Robert McGinnis and some of his compositions, specifically the ones where he has empty negative space around the collage.
McGinnis_01 (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y121/wootmonkey/mcginnis03.jpg)
McGinnis_02 (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y121/wootmonkey/mcginnis108.jpg)
McGinnis_03 (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y121/wootmonkey/mcginnis116.jpg)
McGinnis_04 (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y121/wootmonkey/mcginnis201.jpg)
If you shrink it down so it all fits inside the border of the poster, move the standing figure off center of the running figure (or vice versa...maybe have drunk lee on the left, normal lee on the right, and running lee underneath?), and fill in a few of the holes, I think you could nail that style pretty well.

4 - This just has the classic martial arts poster feel to it. Main character clearly displayed with lots of awesome action poses in the background. It looks like the figures are to be read from the background to the foreground, like a Muybridge sequence of Rock Lee? If so, try to make the figures flow like in an animation, because right now they don't seem to make any logical chronological sense. I'd also consider different placements of the poses (the standing figure (first) being higher than the airborne figure (third) is kind of confusing visually).

The second one is also good, as it completely shows Rock Lee from head to toe, but it feels cluttered to me and not very dynamic =\

You've got some awesome skill and it's been fun watching the progress. Pretty excited to see where else you go with this.

asstornado
09-14-2007, 11:15 PM
I like the progress youve made with this!

It's looking pretty sweet. My choice would definitely be 2.
It has the most dynamic feel, although I'm not too sure of the shots within the caption boxes. Layout and the main shot is cool though. Good luck.

keo, FredH: Tks dudes! Ah the good old 70s.

Eclipse: Tks man. Colours will come in a bit once I stop being fickle minded which poster I wanna do.

TryForce: Tks for the points man. I am glad to bring ya a smile. :D

Spacey: Tks dude for the kind words and comments. You sure bring up some great points that make me rethink about poster 1. I was checking out some Bruce Lee's films posters to get some ideas. The examples you gave from Robert McGinnis are awesome. I will see what I can do with poster no 4.

asstornado: Tks man. I thought by having some scenes insides those boxes will futher enhance Rock Lee's character. Will see how it goes. ^^

Aite dudes. The preassure is building up for me. lol. Right now I more or less narrow down to 1 and 2 (and possibly 4). I did some variations for poster 1 and 2.

Poster 1a and 1b: After Spacey point out some cool references of Robert McGinnis posters, here is what I come out with.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/scorn-maniac/sketch_rocklee07.jpg

Poster 2a and 2b: This poster is my favourite. The initial ideal for poster 2a is to have monotone colour scheme for the boxes behind similar to that of a traffic lights. 2b has the same colour cheme except that the colours only affect the jumpsuits.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/scorn-maniac/sketch_rocklee08.jpg

Aite fire away the Cs& Cs. Halfway there.

TryForce
09-17-2007, 11:52 AM

eraQ
09-17-2007, 05:58 PM
I too love 1a, the poses and characters you chose for it are great! I strongly think you should go with it! I like how well the gaara fight is represented as well. Very good job!

chaos81

I like Poster 2a more, less complex n str8 to the point.

Good Luck, bang! :)

TryForce: Tks! Glad to be of service. :)

kovooraj and eraQ: Tks people! Appreciate it.

chaos81: Tks bang. U make a valid point. ^^

Again, tks guys for the comments. I have been pondering about which one to go for and I decided to go for 3a. As much as I love how 1a and 1b turns out, it loses focus for Rock Lee to be a center of focus.

So here's a rough layout. I will do some colour studies later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/scorn-maniac/layout01_rough.jpg

Marcus Dublin

scorn-maniac
09-25-2007, 09:40 AM
Marcus Dublin: Tks! Yeah, how can I forget Cowboy Bebop! That anime has mad style.

kemal.A: Tks dude. Good point. One of the reasons is that maybe because I remember Rock the most from that awesome fight with Gaara. I believe that's where he released his fullest potential. Other fights with Kimimaro and Kisame, in my opinion wasn't as crazy as this fight.

TryForce: Tks man. Lol. Come to think of it, I need to get on it too.

Man, I am seeing crazy entries here. This is exciting! :D I gonna be doing my weakest part . Colouring. Time to practise!

eraQ
09-28-2007, 03:30 AM
Another reason the fight with Gaara is good is because I am up to 371 in the shipuuden manga and there has yet to be a better fight than that for Rock Lee.

brian_h
10-01-2007, 02:03 PM
I anxious to see this. An ambitious final illo to take on since there is so much to render...hope it doesn't distract from the main character.

B

scorn-maniac
10-01-2007, 06:10 PM
eraQ: Agreed man. I need more Rock Lee in the manga!

brian_h: Tks man. Sorry to disappoint you but I am not gonna render the background Rock Lees fully. More like having a monochromatic colours to them. I only gonna render the main character. :) Yeah agreed to your point that it might be distracting if the background characters are rendered.

So here's an update. Tweak a bit of layout. Characters on the background are desatured in colours. Pretty much decided the colours of the main Rock Lee. So here is 4 slightly different looks.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/scorn-maniac/layout03_rough.jpg

eraQ
10-01-2007, 06:19 PM
Im liking 1 and 4 most. 1 because I am a big fan of the different colors, but not sure on the color order...maybe switching what colors go where? Could just be me too, but maybe its the blue. I originally said 1 and 2 because of Lee matching with the background, but that might be too much green for most people and the yellow seems to bright for the piece you are going for. But i love the colors on Lee! Its looking awesome.

YdoUwant2know
10-01-2007, 08:52 PM
Go with number 1. The different colors do a great job of grabbing and hanging on to your attention.

You did a great job with the rendering of Lee. I love the stance and shading on the clothing is very nice. It is hard to tell with the small image, but the hair could use just a bit more contrast in the shading, it looks almost like one flat solid color. a bit of highlight could help.

overall, very nice work, keep it up.

brian_h
10-01-2007, 11:36 PM
2 things...the green of the costume and the background green seem maybe too much the same...but here is a possiblity to consider to exploit here...looking at posters from the 70's you see this alot...instead of using simple blocks behind him with the lettering set in the lowere right hand side small, make the blocks the letters themselves...you have 3 blocks on the right that would be perfect for the 'LEE' and a solid vertical block perfect for the "ROCK". Again, just a suggestion but looking at it it would help breakup the blocks a bit but also add a complete design element to tie it all back together. Two cents.

B

Marco Mazzoni
10-02-2007, 12:15 AM
Yeah man, the giant block letters would really pull this thing together! As far as color scheme, I prefer the yellow bg on no. 3, it's lighter value lets Rock's silohuette read better. Also, it lets the cool green you're using for his outfit stand out just enough.

asstornado
10-02-2007, 01:55 AM
I would go with #3 or 4. If you go with 3 than I would go with a warmer yellow, right now the yellow is a greenish tint that doesn't play too well with his suit.
In the third panel on the right, his arm seems a little squashed. You could bring his fist forward more and make it bigger to really push the perspective, it'll really push the action. Overall really cool design, it looks like alot of fun. Good luck!

scorn-maniac
10-06-2007, 04:08 PM
eraQ: Tks man. Actually, I am real cautious with colours especially vibrant ones since that is a big weakness for me.

YdoUwant2know: Tks man. Yup, spot on the hair. I paint it flat. Will update that later.

brian_h: Tks dude. Thats a fantastic idea regarding the block letters. I gonna use that idea. :)

Marco Mazzoni: Tks man. Yeah, I agree regarding the yellow background and block letters.

asstornado: Tks dude. Agree on both the warmer yellow and the squashed fist. He needs to have more punch!

Aite, I think I finally can settle down on the final layout. Here's it is. Now to the hard part..

You could still push it a little further, but looking good, definantly one of my favorites in this comp. Good luck!

EVIL: Tks man. I agree there's room for improvement. But no more time.. :inocent:

Well the final pose is above. So here's the modeling sheet and initial sketches. I had a great time with this comp. Thanks guys for the super helpful feedbacks. Looking forward to what you guys will cook up. :D

As Rock Lee always says,"Springtime of Youth!"

I think the best line Rock Lee said was.. "I must protect my way of the ninja!" That said, you did a great job at protecting yours. You made a great piece here. It was great watching your progress throughout the comp. Hope to see more of your work in the future:)

Lol Fred. You're right. Thats his ultimate line, how I could forget that. Thanks for the kind words. Yup, somehow I have a feeling I still got long way before I can be a chunnin so I gonna try to level up with the future comps! :D
