Hey everyone,

I thought this would be as good a place as any to drop in and get some advice from those in the industry.

A little back story, I've been working on a bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Manitoba, Canada and I've only a 1/2 year left for my 4-year advanced degree. I have been planning to go into Audiology, perhaps doing my doctorate. However, this was for many reasons which I've since figured out are not right for me. I was doing it for the money, and because the job was guaranteed (My brother is a Doctor and owns a clinic).

Ever since I was young I've been artistically talented and actually thought about going to art school after my first year of university. But of course I got scared of the uncertainty of it all. I ended up spending these last 3 years acquiring student loan debt only to decide I refuse to end up doing something my heart isn't in, even if it is guaranteed.

I've been learning 3d modeling techniques since the beginning of the year, and I've greatly improved and I know with practice I have the potential to be a talented game artist. I'm also luck I have a very understanding Fiance, who's willing to move with me anywhere so I can follow my dream and my passion.

I also happen to have a few friends working at Bioware, Edmonton, which I plan to apply to next year as a QA tester, just to get my foot in the door.

My question for those in the industry or with knowledge they are willing to lend, what can I do honestly to better my chances of securing a job in the industry. Obviously I cannot lay all my eggs in Bioware, hoping to get a QA job and then hoping to make it into the Art department. I'll be applying many places, but I know the industry is notoriously difficult to enter.

I'm finishing my degree this year, which I believe is a smart move and will be a huge accomplishment both myself and companies can see, but I want to know what are the keys to success in landing a job.

Thanks for taking the time to read my long-winded post

To increase your chance to get a job as a game artist, make good game art. And then make some more.

More than just getting a job as an artist, even getting your door in the industry is more what I am worried about. Even a entry-level QA job must have 1000's of applicants

A QA job would help you learn the inner workings of the games (which IS important), but I don't know if that's enough to get into the art dept. As has been said .. your art is what matters most!

In QA, you're still subject to crunches and long hours like the rest of the studio. This is only my personal opinion, but I'd get a steady, decent paying $$ job where the hours are consistent, and the stress is low. Then dedicate your free time to kicking the portfolio into shape.

QA would give you insight into the programming and design aspects, but when it comes to art .. so much can be learned online. Especially with great forums like this one.
