been gone for a while...freakishly swamped with work for the last few months. but now Im back with more free time, so I am working on a book that I have been developing for the last few days. its very basic right now, but Im focusing on some visuals. these first few posts are sketches of some of the characters to start. I will be posting more daily...enjoy

ok, this is a concept for the female assassin character. she was trained in secret as part of a plot by the emperors own high council to assassinate him. the plot was exposed and she was sentenced to death, however she escaped and is now choosing her targets as she sees fit...

here is a concept for the mercenary character. this guy was hired by the emperor to protect his daughter. turns out he was bought by a sinister ruler of a rival faction, and instead of protecting the emperors daughter he killed her. but then he was betrayed by the one who hired him, and was forced into hiding, being hunted by both factions...

concept for one of the emperors elite guard, which is more like your local police squad, not very high ranking but usefull for cannon fodder type deal. red shirts if you will. however, this particular elite guard plays a key role in the story therefore she gets to live...for a while...

concept for a 2ndary character. this guy befriends the mercenary whos on the run, and they both take odd jobs here and there while laying low. he is a mutant, cast out of his city as afreak, yada yada, he eats humans, and must consistently fight the urge to kill and devour his mercenary partner...

I saw you first in the bhg challenge. I was very impressed with how you started your concepts. As always, these new ones look great too. Hope you will continue making more, and a few more developed ones too (develop your second one! that one really looks cool!:D )
Hope to see more

Yeah! I love the way you scribble the crap out of your concepts! Really gives it a lively feel with a lot of implied detail. Also really fits into the dark/grunge style, and I can dig that! Nice little touches on the BG, instead of flat white. The only thing that bugs the garbage out of me is the gallery on your site. Very slow, small, and inconvenient. You gotta fix that, because I want to see more of your stuff without a headache. But as far as your work... keep it coming with new stuff!

lol, thx Don, I will deffinately do that
EricElwell
09-21-2007, 02:34 PM
I would maybe suggest making one of those beasties (the top detail image is my fav) as a larger/more focal part of the scene. Right now, each character is taking up about the same canvas size. It *is* a battle scene, so you're not necessarily focusing on one character, but I think it is a good technique to make some more focal points. The placement is doing a good job of this, I am just recommending sizes... my only other recommendation is to freak'n paint it out, it rocks!
Centrifuge
09-21-2007, 07:25 PM
so I added more stuff, played with the sizes of afew guys as well as position. seems to be getting crowded, I will probably tone it down some, not sure if the big guy in the center is working, may play with that some more as well...newayz this is where its at, c|c are always welcome

hmm, I do have a few minor suggestions, but I don't want to influence the direction you are taking it too much. I'd like to see how you'll continue to develop it on your own initiative before I suggest anything further (if you would want that).
Marco Mazzoni
09-22-2007, 09:05 AM
Hmm, I would suggest moving that big fella back a little so he's not right in the middle of your composition. Also if you were to raise the horizon line you would be giving those guys more depth to play around in.
This piece looks like a lot of fun :)
Centrifuge
09-23-2007, 02:58 PM
ok so here is the sketch im gonna go with. pulled up the horizon a bit, and added some more elements to the background, I think it does enough to sell the space. next step is to refine the lines and then paint it out.
Centrifuge
09-23-2007, 03:01 PM
just starting to refine the twin riders to the right, I thought about just painting over the sketch lines but, it would make the paint stage much easier for me if the lines were more clear, that way I dont have to find and create shapes at that point.

anti- thx man , I deffinately will continue to post stuff
fro- glad you like whats in here, thx. smooched proportions, yeah I could pick out some things, these were relatively quick paints, I could spend more time working out the refinements but, for personal pieces I just want to keep doing new ones rather than let the perfectionist in me take over, lol
so Ive been playing around with another idea in my head so I decided to start laying it out, see what other people see as it progresses. there is of course at this point much more thign to get worked out, but see what you see neway...
vinny
10-15-2007, 10:29 AM
these were really fun to look at! i think the "smooched" proportions give them a nice bulkier look and if that was your goal, i think it's accomplished.

Great stuff!
I do think that the dragon rider had a better pose previously... had a lot more implied action and force. Now he feels very linear, rather than following the action lines of the dragon. Very cool stuff though.. I'm very surprised that you find time to do these with work, I find it very hard to balance myself. I think you are doing great stuff!

the entire IMG is a composite of scanned sketches and digital painting. and after looking at it for a bit, even though I could successfully just paint overtop of everything with what I want, I also want a clean line art version of it. so I flattened all the layers, took down the opacity and started a draw over, which will be better in the long run I think, because I'll be able to add a few details in already filled in areas as well as make the whole piece look a bit more uniform. more progress to come here is an example of what I was just talking about...

here we go...
1. progress on that first pinup I showed earlier. getting further along with the draw over, I added the rim light just to get a feel for a more finished look (keeps me involved in the piece)
2. rough paint sketch of the second pinup. just getting an idea out, I probably wont be updating this design much til the first is done. but I do like where its going so far...
3. just a random character I stumbled into as I was taking a break to eat. might have to include him in something I like him, lol.

There are some absolute winners in this thread. You make me wanna play around with size more in my own work.
I noticed that in the second full iteration of the dragons you changed the the foreground rider completely, probably because you wanted to take out the dragon's saddle-esc back. You sacrificed the scale of the beast that I actually liked alot.
I have no problems with where it eventually lead, however.

Awesome dude, didnt realise you had such a long going thread over on here! I've been missing out on a lot of eyecandy - you should probably slap some more of this goodness over in your polycount thread too, its a shame to think some people are missing out!
It'll be interesting to see how you handle that pinup, at the moment it looks like its a little bit noisy and you could lose some details / focus. That being said, with nice use of colours and contrast you could fix that up. But itd be nice if it ended up totally fucking rad, right?!
Your line work is extraordinary. It does look a bit busy overall, but when you zoom in, it is fantastic. Pulling out a few highlights to determine what is in front of what will help, but it looks outstanding so far. You paint-sketch has some nice mood and color as well. keep posting progress :)
