hi! so i thought i post my wip here too, to motivate me properly and maybe receive some good crits! this is a char for one local competition and limits are 5k polies, and 1k texture sheets [dif, specular, normal, other are optional]

i started off with a head, and i sorta finished it in one day :)

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/3724/headhilo2hl6.jpg

then i painted in the eyes:

http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/508/headeyeswk3.jpg

and then i did some work on the hi-res torso, i'll use it to generate normal maps later:
just the base:

http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/3867/leatherarmour2fb4.jpg

and then, some decors:

Damn! Thatīs cool work. What do you use to make a normal map? I use Projection modifier in max, but still canīt get such a great result.

Keep us posted.

wow, congrats... your officaly a bad ass.!

really nice, 516 tris its a really low poly mesh, and you got a nice result with this normal map!

only one suggestion, you could use an asymmetrical uvw for the head, and add these tatoos only on one side, i think it would look better, but thats good how it is right now ;]

can we see the texture sheets?

keep that up man!

yeah i think you would gain more if you did the assymetry thing :)

Otherwise, sexxay!

I love the detailing on his armour, looking really cool and I can barely wait to see what you'll do with it texture-wise :)

I do agree with how the face could benefit from being asymmetrical. You could do something really awesome tattoo-wise then. Not that the ones you have now are bad in any way.

made him a pair of hands, my anatomy skills still need some work. wanted to make his arms thin and tendony [but still with a sense of a tremendous strength ], because back in the medieval times you had to hunt your food down or rob someone of it.

Hey, this looks great :D really like it, could you maybe insert the head just for preview :O im curious.

10-14-2007, 05:26 AM
the armour looks awesome but the muscle around the elbow looks too rock solid and messy (im no expert on anatomy) so with the exception of saying find some good arm reference,im not much help sorry.

BuroKun
10-14-2007, 08:47 PM
very cool, I agree with Free-willy, and it also seems like the shoulders are to wide. love the dagger placement.

Frozan
10-15-2007, 12:24 AM
that looks pretty sick so far. i would say beef the arms up just a little.

miezis
10-15-2007, 03:29 AM
TryForce: the low poly head looks a bit weird in the hi-poly mesh.
free-willy: yup yur right!
BuroKun: thanks! and i'll look into the shoulder stuff!
frozan: well, just a little bit! :)

for all you buff lovers out there, a great site for references:

last night was yet another late one for me. made some legs. i don't really like them myself, but it's a work in progress.

KICKER

I like how the legs turned out but the upper body still looks way too wide proportionally and it also doesn't fit the design you're going for here with a hooded bandit..he should be thin and agile with smaller shoulders since he doesn't wield any huge weapons or anything. Great work so far.

ThatDon

super clean.

nice leg work....this might help you for the shapingness thingy of him.

here's a small update, been busy lately doing nothing :) all i've got left is his arms and a couple of buckles on his boots and something that will break up the surface on his knees.

BuroKun
11-07-2007, 04:06 AM
did you see the image I posted? you should really fix the proportions, but besides that, good work man.

miezis
11-07-2007, 04:21 AM
i did see your image, but i don't think i want to go your way. you squished his head too much and made his hips to wide for a man, his form looks a bit too feminine in your version.
the shoulders are a bit too wide, but that's the way i want to go [for now :)]

Saker

wow &&.. great work man ^^.. i loved it very much ..
Do you know whatr is the meaning of the arabian word you wrote on his eye ^^ it means :Assassin::

pretty good^_^

ShadyD
11-07-2007, 12:04 PM
awesome! His head feels like the spec maps too shiny.. it feels plasticy or something.. might just be me.

Burokun, good effort but that indeed makes him look VERY feminine..

Keep it as it is, maybe scale down the shoulders when you're in a happy mood.

El Scorcho

I like the design of torso, arms and boots. He seems to be missing a butt and and his chest is a little too wide. I look forward for more updates.

fixed the wide shoulders, after all :) and made him a pair of hands. not too sure about their proportions yet, their just roughly placed now, haven't atached them to the rest of the arm... but i got sick of modeling and decided to think about color composition for this guy.
so whatcha think?

Frozan
11-10-2007, 11:50 AM
i would like to see him rigged up and in poses. i think that will truly make this character shine. looks pretty good to me. nice work.

Nice job on the clothing textures, he looks much more stylish now that everything has come together

i always asked myself on whats it reminding me most.

http://www.ncsx.com/2006/102306/Tuesday/assassins_creed_le_statue_fx.jpg
Assassins Creed anyone? xD

looking good there, though i dont like how you work with the colors yet, keep it basic and simple. Yours looks quite medvial-time alike. Back then they were not used to wear different colors stuff mostly.
Stick to the White-Yellowish darker color and red, But no green or light brown.

Btw the red part on the hood, i would change it to the same color as the hands are.

keep it up, rendering looks awesome!

miezis
11-10-2007, 07:18 PM
TryForce: yup! you're right, assassins creed was one of the inspirations for this char. and yes, i had an epiphany of how this character must look not too long after i read your comment :)

back in black!

Hes looking great. I almost think his legs are too long to me they almost seem feminine because of there length. Or it could be the boot around his lower leg looks sorta like knee highs lol.

ShadyD
11-11-2007, 02:42 PM
I'd hump it..

forget the assassins creed, he's a medieval batman! :)

and i'm almost finished, all i need to do now is make his hood and loin-cloth out of cloth or leather.

TryForce
11-12-2007, 05:17 AM
:D looks really great now! good job!

I kind of agree on the "legs are to long" but instead i would "make the forearm longer".

keep it up!

Twindragon
11-12-2007, 04:10 PM
Those details in the boot definetly make it look better..not so much like knee high socks lol.

BuroKun
11-12-2007, 09:18 PM
looking good man. So is that the colors you are going with?

shadowbreeze
11-12-2007, 09:20 PM
lookin good, i personally like him with out the face mask, especially after you but all that time into the cool face.

ryuju
11-12-2007, 11:13 PM
This is freakin awesome man great work I love the colors. I disagree with shadowbreeze though, i like him better with the face mask on but thats just me, the sad thing is it covers up some of the excellent work you did with the face.

Excellent modelling :D

Looking excellent; cant wait to see it finished :)

11-13-2007, 10:50 AM
looking good man, only crit's I have is he looks and feels stealthy, except his feet feel clunky. Maybe continuing the feel, with a thinner softer boot, a tad more robin hood? I also think your arms could be saceld up/ lengthend, or shrink his lower torso some.

miezis

the low poly stuff is almost done!

http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/6149/lowpolyuk9.jpg

and i've still gote some space for an uber sword or somthing! the limit is - 5000

http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/7636/polycountad3.jpg

and of course the silhouette to check if there are any unecesary sharp corners, and at this moment - there are! :)

Looking really nice. The shoulders of his vest and the knees stand out the most to me as needing maybe a little more geo. Oh, and the inside of the hood :p

Really looking forward to seeing this guy finished. I'm digging the batman colours as well.

that's great! i love it! maybe add some very subtle browns and dark greens to make him a bit more colorfull? although i love the gold/black theme!

i actually am thinking about posing him :) since it's state holiday tomorrow, and the deadline for the competition is the same 19th of november, so - still some time... and i think i''m gona add some color variations to him, like some logos/visual elements that supports the story of this guy.

East
11-18-2007, 04:05 PM
Congrats on a job very well done :) Please do pose him. The relaxed T-pose is good when doing the modeling, but not so much for presentation. Doesn't have to be anything advanced, often it's enough to just make it a bit more natural and relaxed with a slight tilt to the head, to give it a huge boost.

Actually I like your assassin in black & gold - brings attention to his face with startling blue eyes - very exciting character, miezis....

Really cool character man. Just one tiny thing, it might look good if you pushed out the cloth a little from his upper legs. the side view and back view of his upper legs look really flat. It's almost a straight line. Otherwise, everything else is looking great! I really like his face.

ThatDon
11-19-2007, 01:25 PM
The spec on the waist cloth is too high. Other wise good stuff for a Latvian ;)

i think he really needs that third accenting color, so here it is. although competition is over on my side of the ocean, i think i'll continue this guy and make some minor adjustments, and naturally make him a sword!
his face looks a bit fat from this angle of light... hmm...

FredH - yes, you are right! i will do that!
Don - gee, thanks! :P and you just might be right, nice eyesight for a Seattlian! :)
obi-one - thank you!

Really nice character. I wasn't sold at first, but I really like this. My biggest crit is on the specularity. I think you need to broaden the gloss value, so the highlights are "larger" and you need a lot more contrast in your spec map, so that highlights aren't so un-interrupted. Especially on the skin. Skin specular should have tons of black speckles.

The skin diffuse could also use more reddish tones in the shadows.
