View Full Version : Questions about Tri counts

My character has a jet propulsion system.
Do the flames that I create count towards the tri count for my shadow. Or is there a seperate budget?
Also, he has a belt of bullets that will go around his arm or waist, they connect to a gun that is PART of his arm (not detachable) Would the belt of bullets count as a detachable weapon, and therefore not effect the main tri count?
Thanks in advance?

Effects from weapon fires and propulsion systems don't come out from your character or weapon. feel free to use as many polies as you would like for effects.
For your belt, if it never detachs from your arm, then yes, it comes out of your character's budget.
Hope this helps:thumb:

I find the detachable gear bit to be a little nebulous-
In the case of packs and little accessories that are not contiguous with the body mesh but never are intended to be moved or removed by design, are these considered part of the character or weapon/gear?
By design- there is a guy on cgchat I believe- who has a gun for a head!
It seems like a global character+accessories+weapon -steed/mount/pet/diorama poly limit of 7k is most freeing and least confusing, and lets the modeler decide where he wants to spend his dough. If he wants to make his character a box with a 6988 tri gun, by all means let him!

Yeah, this would have made things a lot more simpler, but it's much too late to change this now. A few have already started their normal map process. If there is a Dominance War III, I will do away with the seperation. Thanks for bringing this to my attention

hey i know this has been asked over and over but this is slightly different. im with the machines(3dtotal) and .. hang on ill post the last bit of the back story:
... Even if one manages to destroy a machine part of this monster one can only hope that the soul will replace the damaged part with the crushed remains of its victims otherwise the soul its self will replace the missing part and create a terrifying new weapon to take its place.
i was just wondering if the soul that replaces the parts should be modeled concidering its all firey and see through and all? i was guna do this anyway but i figuire ill jus check.

i got a question too
can I have multiple versions of the same weapon, with that one
weapon's tris just counting?
if i got like a dude with 10 arms can he have 10 1000 tri weapons of
same sort in each hand, or like 6 identical 700 tri pistols and 4 identical
300 tri daggers?
.

Kalango --> Yup, that is correct. Feel free to make glows. Just bare in mind that glows and effects use unlimited polies. They do not come out of your two budgets.
Squibbit --> Nope, You can't have multiple versions for this comp. Only one. In this case, if your character has 10 arms, perhaps make 8 of them use fists or something small, and make the last two use something big. Good Luck:D

hey fred, ya missed my one, if i have a soul thats made up of glowyness and stuff do i need to take that from my poly budget? just asking cuz parts of my machine are, for the lack of a better word, held togeather by 'soul' as it were.

Hum....so i will be able to use the video post even for the winning shot? I would use planes and 2 sided maps to do the glow stuff.... nice anyway :)
This is veeery nice for me :lucky: ... FX on the way!
PS:if video post is not alloud i will HAVE to use planes right? and how about its maps? the glow maps for the planes will be in separated files? hum....

squirl --> Eesh, If your character is made up entirely of glows, then it would have to come out of your character's polybudget. The unlimited glows is mainly for weapon effects and perhaps a few lightened objects on your character.
Kalango --> Yes, you are right, you would have to use planes. If, like squirl, you are making your character up of glows (ghost, wraith, etc), then you will have to use your character budget for the glows. If your ghost for instance, has a weapon that further glows, these weapons glows count as the environment and can use unlimited polies and textures.

I think the point is, if something is a structural part of the character and it glows, then it comes out of the poly budget. And things that are not structural, ie. Jedi force lightning, explosions and fart clouds are all effects, not actually part of your character and therefore dont cut into your budget. Is that correct Fred? Thats how I interperated it so correct me if Im wrong
FredH

Yes, that is exactly right Asmuel:thumb: Thanks for the better interpretation:)

yes, you can use particles for weapon effects or anything that doesn't make up the physical form of your character. If it makes up any part of the physical form of your character, than you must use your character's budget for the particles.
