G.I.Joe VS Street Fighter
Brief:
If you don’t know one, then you probably know or heard of the other! For the next week and a half, in our third 3d mini challenge on gameartisans.org, it's time for you to bring a character from one of these two popular franchises, to life! For 3d entries, we are looking for Chibi (small and deformed) street fighting models. You may choose any character. As long as your creation resembles your character choice in some small way, everything else is fine! Backgrounds are optional. Pedestals are optional. Textures are optional. Animations are optional. This challenge is here for those desiring to practice their art and receive friendly advice from fellow artisans. So as mentioned in mini comp #2, keep it easy, keep it quick, and keep it real. From what I have gathered. Though I guess if you want to do a character that someone is also doing I guess there is nothing to stop you.

sinz --> You raise an interesting dilemma. 500 polygons is extremely low for a character and weapon. I would prefer not to raise the poly count or give any extra sheets. These mini comps are meant to be extremely small and easy. If extra options are given, people will feel pressured to max out their character's polycount and texture options, so everyone would have to spend more time on it. So, 500 only. If you can, squeeze in a weapon:inocent:
newman3d --> Dude, that's really cool. Great start man.
Japhir --> He screams dhalzim to me. Really cute start there. He would make an excellent model:thumb:
Gunnahan --> People like to reserve there characters to dissuade others from choosing the same.. however, you can actually do the same character as someone else. It's really up to you. Good Luck, and hey, welcome to GameArtisans:)

I have a question.
are we supposed to be doing all the characters as if they were in a chibi street fighting game?
I was just going to do him as a chibi. but the style will change if its chibi street fighting.
FredH
09-13-2007, 07:29 PM
Both versions are fine. You can give him a street fighter look if you wish, but it's not really necessary.
iceblazer17 --> Yeah, he is not an extremely popular character, but, I think he would still make a really funny chibi character:p

Yeah think of a dwarf or little person when handling it, something along the lines of Street Fighter 2 Super Puzzle Fighter II.
so I'm confused does it have to be chibi? or can it just be a street fighterish look to the character?
Oh sweet jesus, this is fantasmagoglious
Awesome mini competition. I couldn't give a sideways toss about Street Fighter, as it's been done and redone to death -- but G.I. Joe (or Action Force as it was called here when I was a kid) is something different altogether. A large portion of my childhood took place in the back yard, waging jungle warfare with these little plastic figures among the strawberry plants, tomatos, and potatos..
I might just have to take a break from my ninja-which-is-no-longer-a-ninja and make something quick tomorrow..
Snake Eyes was always my favourite, but I might just do Storm Shadow..

here are some chibi references of street fighter characters for those of you who can't find any references:

This is an amazing challenge, and i'd like to take the chance in being part of it in some small off tagent way.... a mini-challenge to myself- so to speak.
For anyone that wants their character rigged up an animated, i'm willing to rig/weight the character and animate 'one' action move/combo that you'd like to see him/her do. (SFX not included).
For those interested, please inbox me as Fred most likely would prefer to keep this thread clear for the real mini-challenge posts.
Cheers,

ice blazer 17:
in game art, when talking about polyoncount you are always talking about tris, so 500 tris max. and in max 9 you right-click your view changing thingie and press preferences and there you can turn on "show statistics" in the tab labelled statistics you can set what you want to show.
hope it helps

Scjohnson5551- thx man :) i dont give up easly by no means , i was just a bit disapointed when i wrote that , worked for a few hours , got nothing decent etc. i'll keep trying tho whenever i got time :)
Plat Sajack - just PM me your mail , i'll post mesh asap ;)
Inpw - zann Nice style. And for me looks strange those thick lines on shoulders, neck etc. What is this?
Those r the mesh border edges, since i hav not combine the meshes for easy wip it will disappear once the neck n shoulder combine v the body to hav no more gap among them :)
Nice sagat cause i wonder will there b anyone doing him n blanka, good job :)
FYI u can adjust the edge thickness (maya) by going display>custom poly display opt>Edge width after clicking on Highlight>Border edges

btw- grate work everybody!
any input would be deeply appreciated, have never done anything like this before....
ThatDon:
Very nice model wish I could have seen the wires ;) never-the-less very sharp use of the restraints thus far.
Mr.Kite:
Hot damn you've created this guy with so much style, I am sure we all can't wait to see the rest!
Zann:
That's an awesome use of the triangle limit can't wait to see the textures.
Vied:
Hope to see some progress on the cobra commander!, good choice btw. :).
iceblazer17:
Nice necro you got there, I totally forgot about this guy.
Plat Sajack:
Love the reference images you'll be using nice and simplistic though you have the front view mirrored(?) as you can tell by his scar being on the opposite side of his face, I am just pointing that out so you don't accidently do that on the texture map (I am not worried you know what your doing:) ).
Inpw:
Great design there good to see someone handle Saget, Tiger!.
Scjohnson5551:
Looking good, I say you pulled that off rather well.
Rocky77:
His name is Akuma!
Mesh looks good so far I guess try to mimic his (Gi?), can't really give any feedback other than use your triangle count to the best of your abilities and try to pull off the design the best you can.

Everyone is doing such a great job:)
Japhir --> He is shaping up really good, but it would be cool if you made his neck much much thinner. He is loosing that thin stretchy look because his thick neck makes him look like a big muscled man. Besides this, everything else is looking ace.
Dentysta --> Not sure which character you are doing, but right now, his proportions seem a little too evenly spaced. Nothing is really exagerated. It would be cool if you exagerated his head more, or gave him huge hands and feet, or something. Anything to make him look more cartoony would be a great fit for a chibi character. Nonetheless, you are doing a very good job so far man, keep it up!:)
mrkite --> You monster... Nuff said:p
seven --> Looking good so far. Everything looks spot on. Can't wait to see the textures.
rocky77 --> Yup, some tweaking is still in order. you need to define your limbs a little more. His shoulder and upper arm currently looks a bit messy. See if you can seperate those two areas so that each have their own forms. Next, his cheeks look too puffy. The top of the head is usually wider than the bottom of the head, so maybe bring in those cheeks a bit. Next, I see that you wasted a bit of polies on the tip of his thumb and his hands look like mittens. To fix his hands, you would need to optimize the thumb tip, and change the direction of the thumb so that it does not just stick straight out of his hand. It must run alongside his other fingers, but of course, it's much shorter. Next, if you can, try to make all your faces a square as much as possible. If everything is a 3 sided face, it looks messy and it's hard to read. If you are using 3dmax's edit mesh, press hide edges to hide certain edges. If you are using edit poly, select an edge and hit your backspace (edit post: corrected backface with "backspace") keyboard button. This will hide your select edges. If all edges are still showing, right click, properties, uncheck reveal all edges (not sure on the exact name, but something like this:) ) Anyways, keep pushing those polies. He has a lot of promise. Hope you will finish him:thumb:
Scjohnson5551 --> Very niice, the proportions look great man!
Inpw --> Like Scjohn, very nice modeling, the proportions look great here too!:)

09-17-2007, 11:48 AM
you are totally right fred! thanks! so i changed the neck, enlarged the head so it has cooler proportions and optimized for quite some time.i think the modeling is done. :D
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/5237/wipwd2.jpg
i do have one question though: the brachelets are alpha'd to a plane, but since a plane is only one-sided, how do you make it read the other side aswell? right now i just duplicated the plane on the same position and flipped the normals, but that adds another two quads=4 tris to my model... so how do you make a two-sided plane without adding to the polycount?
thanks!
EDIT: now that i look at it i think i'll probbably shrink down the head a bit :P
Antimagic
09-17-2007, 11:59 AM
Just press 2d sided material in your material editor. However, if you would like to put a different texture on the opposite side, you would need to create a new uv channel for that and apply a separate material id. It's looking really good there. I think the changes made were a definite improvement:thumb:

Vahl, that chibbi character is really lookin cool. How long have you been using z-brush? Im really hell bent on how to start learning it...
Im submitting my character in the competition, but it seems like I am more excited to see the final works of everyone else! If these characters were going to be in a chibbi-street fighter game, I would so buy it!
FredH

Gunnahan --> I think what you have now is shaping up really well, but yes, getting things under 500 is a challenge in itself. I think in order to free up some polygons for your head, you would have to get rid of the rings around your knees and wrists. If getting rid of them would mess up your design, at the very least, you can get rid of one side of these rings (see attached). After this, perhaps consider shrinking the size of his legs so that he looks more chibi. Right now, it looks like you tried to keep the proportions in scale of a real human, but legs are not entirely necessary for chibi characters. If you need an example of no real legs, look at some of these sketches - here - (http://www.1freewallpaper.com/Cartoon-pictures/Calvin-Hobbes-pictures.jpg). As you can see, usually, only the feet show. Hopefully, this will be enough to get your polycount down. Don't feel discouraged, I am sure if you keep at it, you will come up with something nice. Just keep pushing those polies and post your progress when you can. I'd be happy to comment on it further:thumb:
Vahl --> He is looking really cool man. Nothing much else to say except.. can't wait to see more:)
tacit math --> you nailed his proportions! Well done man. Looking forward to more!
sinz --> Lol, he looks great man. It's a shame you can't emphasize his visor more, but I guess if you put in strong edges, this would increase the polycount. Looks like you are thinking ahead with this one, very well done:) Looking forward to the model.

mrkite, tacit, vahl <3 <3 <3
Gunnahan - Just don't get discouraged =} With such a low polycount, you can't worry yourself with getting all the loops in. Concern yourself with getting the forms right. How many tri's is it going to take to define the chest at the most basic level? How about the legs? Can you get away with collapsing a whole strip of poly's down? Don't forget the trick of applying a 100% self illuminated black material on your model to check the silhouette and see if any edges aren't contributing to the model.
kremrhi - bwahaha, great zangief. I'd watch out with the anatomy. Make sure you're painting the skin over the muscles and not just how the muscles look under the skin (particularly in the thigh and forearm).
Here's my go...

seem to have found a source for my tri-problem.. i was wondering how you guys get so much detail into that 500 tri boundary.. when clicking a poly in max and accidently moving it i dicovered it was duplicated at some time in my work.. now i am trying to find all those double overlapping polys to get rid of them but selecting each one and moving it to see if there is one underneath is tedious.. anyone know of a faster (automated) way?

are they attached to the main elements of the mesh, if not select the elements you want to keep invert n delete. A low threshold weld will probably also do the job

@toma_li: you should finish him! i liked the low poly so much, and textures are just very early stages so much to improve! don't give up!

hi all !:D
many thanks for your kind words!
my works is nothing if compared with many other great works in this challenge
your kind words boost up my spirit to try to finish it
me gotta learn alot! the UV mapping is killin me..:flag:
I got some question..
when we present the final comp, do we render the figure or just screen grab?
Because I'm very confuse lookin at my 512px texture is having alot of jaggy egdes at screen..
If I render it, the quality is up a bit..
Do the 512px jpeg texture is set to 72dpi or 300? or else?
And the last question is, when the link of the final comp is out?
because at monday in my timezone, I will go travelling to another city for a couple of days.. so I better finish it fast:brick: :brick: :brick:

zann - Love that limited palette!
Vahl - D: damn, that looks really great! I too was curious how those beads would turn out. Be nice if you could scrounge up the tri's to give the fingers the same meaty look as the toes...if wishes were horses...
Japhir - Ahh, looking much better. Needs some hard edges, especially to define the face.
Kalango - This update really added character to him. Onward to the texture!
vied - So damn cute! The cape was a good addition, having another major color instead of just blue.
For more accurate viewport viewing, (if you haven't already)...
Customize > Preferences...
Preference Settings > Viewports Tab > Display Drivers > Configure Driver...
Once in the Configure Direct3D dialog box, set Background Texture Size and Download Texture Size to 1024 and check the "Match Bitmap as Closely as Possible" checkbox.
You need to be using Direct3D to get these options though (can be set under Choose Driver in the Viewport Tab).
For submissions, it looks like Fred has a link up at the end of this (http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/showthread.php?t=645) thread.
obibok - It is looking a bit like a Ryu cheerleader =P Try slimming up a few of her parts (like the calves, the arms, maybe even the waist some more). This could help give Sakura a more feminine physique.

vied --> Feel free to use the 3dmax's rendering engine. Go ahead and make something pretty:) For your texture sheets, you should set it to 72 dpi and 514x514 pixels. And finally, here is the direct link to upload your 3d image (http://www.gameartisans.org/contests/mini/character.html). Otherwise, it's looking really good so far. Keep up the good work:)
Deto --> Cool concept, but I hope you have time for the 3d model. Glad to see another g.i.joe fan:)
Japhir --> Progress is being made! It looks like you have all the details in the right place. Now you just need to make everything more crisp and more in focus. I am positive that if you keep pushing this one till monday, he is going to look great:)

Alright, I'm a little behind, it seems whenever i want to try and work on him something or someone pops in and wants to distract me =\. Anyway this is my first Max model, I'm a Lightwave user switching over, and well it's different for sure :P. That will hopefully explain the terrible "render". Right now he is at 379 tris. I'm not sure where I am going to put the other ones in, probably round some things out, or add in the belt, or just make it deform better...but not sure, any suggestions?

i've been working on the shadows of the face/torso a bit and here is a small update. i think i'm going in the right direction :D
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/6919/wipwc5.jpg
and here are the texture flats, 256^2

09-22-2007, 08:14 AM
Japhir - Coming along swimmingly, but...sharper still! Especially in the face. Really like the color going on in the head. Try and get some of that saturated red into the torso a little to help unify.
edit: errrr, rather, do what MoP said on PC =3
sinz - Ah, you snuck in while I was posting! Normals look good. Might want to double check the back anatomy (http://people.uleth.ca/~little/PE2110/funcanatomy/2back%20muscle.jpg) though. The trapezius is going to cover most of the top area with some dimples and here and there for the scapula and other muscles below. Maybe loosen up some of the muscles in the abdomin too.
Woke up and saw that she lacked color and life (something I've been trying to get better at), so I kicked it in the butt and this was the result...
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y121/wootmonkey/Art/chunli_04.jpg
Added a tri to get the hair in a slightly better spot (will probably fiddle with it more), so she's 500 tris even.
Also, this is knocked down to 256^2.
Still have plenty to go!
This probably ain't my best model so far.. Haha :D
But sure as heck is the most lowpoly :)
http://i2.tinypic.com/4ts6m2h.jpg
But I got a question about those maps. Are we allowed to use one 512x diffuse, one 512x spec, one 512x normal etc OR total of 512x texture space divided however we want between the maps? Ie 256x diffuse, 128 spec, 128 normal and so on so forth?
And another question... What kind of stuff you should include in the final post? Ie do you have to have textures fit to the 1000x1000 area, or simply the model? Also... gah, so many questions to ask... What off the pedestal if you'd make one, included in polycount/texture size or just for the nice effect? :D

great stuff everybody!
i've been working on the texture some more, trying to add in some hardness, so i used no smudging :) problem is that i don't know how to make my pen pressure influence the opacity of my brush (i'm using photoshop 6) so any help on that would be great!
here is the update:
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/5008/wipdm6.jpg
(i only worked on the face and a little bit on the torso)
EDIT: i found it!
Seven: Great looking Vega! You surely nailed him :) I only got one suggestion, the textures look great, but your render don't give enough credit to it... If you tilt up the self-illumination to 50 or even 100, you'll get light the textures up very nicely and it will look rich by color instead of somewhat grey and 'dusty' as it does with normal lighting :)
Scjohnson5551: Very good looking model there, nice textures also! :) I like it :)
Japhir: Whoa! Don't use the smooth brush! Its looking brilliant like that. VERY COOL painted like texture :D The face and torso <3 Love it
Japhir
09-23-2007, 10:15 AM
thanks deto! i love my new drawing style :D it is waaaay easier then drawing and smudging and gives much better results! i now draw only with a hard round brush, with the drawing sise and the opacity depending on the stylus, so i barely have to change tools. i just love it!
so here is a new update:

I didn't finish, spent too much time working on optimizing it to be 500 polys. I actually believe it would be quicker if the comp were 600-650 polys. I easily spent an extra 2-3 hours cutting polys which could've been enough to finish texturing. It was fun though and I plan to finish him when I get back from Hawaii next week. :)

that rocks SuperO finish him. If i would have had six hundred polys boy what i could do will an extra 100, But i think thats the challenge to do the best you can with 500 but i agree 600-650 would have been nice.

Johnson, You need to finish that man! Its looking awsome, keep us updated
Dang, wish I had have time to finish.. Spend whole last stupid day in hospital and didn't even get anything good :/
But I learned some good stuff from other people's meshes, next time I won't do so boxy and bad mesh, and instead do a good smooth one ;) Good competition, I liked it alot :) Can't wait for the next one!
And voting voting :)
Good work everyone!

Spacey, you know I <3 you, but those poses are so ace. I love your work.
SuperOstrich, love the start. I'm gonna hound you on IM till you finish, cause that's awesome. Now that the comp is over, add 200-500 more tris to get him closer to your concept and finish him as a swank folio piece.

Just a lttle afterwork, so i can practice rigging a little :-) simple biped poses, but she behaves pretty well even without being optimized for animation... would have loved to have the time for posing her before the comp finished.
when, where and how do we vote? :)
