Hi guys, I think I'll try to stick to the original design, but with a realistic twist. This is my first aproach.

He looks a little old,if you are trying to stay true to the original concept do something about his huge had,he looks like one of those Progeria kids
I also think that the proportions of his body are a little off

Hi Kikialex thanks for the feedback I'm still working with the proportions. Progeria kid? Who are the progeria kids? Sorry I don't understand.
This is another aproach to a more younger proportion.
Please Share your thoughts :D

i think one of the things thats making him look old is his neck. there are just way too much veins and such showing. usaully kids have a softer look to their skin. reminds me a bit of christopher walken. overall looking pretty cool man. keep going!

The key thing to remember when handling younger people anime or otherwise is to keep things simple. Focus on soft round features and don't get to bogged down in the tight details. Check out this link for some insight: http://drawsketch.about.com/library/bl_drawing-children.htm Good luck dsolo, I'm looking forward to your updates.:)

I've been quite busy at work this days, but finally I have something new to show. I tone down the wrinkles in his faces and added a few more comstumes and detail to the base model.

Head is freaky big, torso is tiny, arms are too showrt and thin, biceps are too long, I'd like to say the legs curve out too much.
Grab some proportion refs. For Gaara, I'd google up some girly emo guys, and go from there. Google found this, seems about right: http://buzznet-48.vo.llnwd.net/assets/users16/brendon0equals0art/default/This_emo_guy_is_sooooo_cute_-_I_love_his_hair--feat-msg-118284875064.jpg
Anyway, keep it up. :)

Hey SupRore, thanks for the feedback, if take a look to the following picture you can check the reference I'm currently following. Maybe looks wrong to you but I would say it fits pretty well to the original, you are right about the chest though.
Try to find a proportions that please everyone is going to be really difficult

dkv thanks for the feedback! I'll experiment a bit more with the face. I'm just trying to grasp the overall right proportion so afterthat I begin to put more attention to details in the face and everywhere.
I did an sketch overpainting my current model, trying to figure out what could be the final look and also how could be the hair.
My intention is to get someone who looks scary at a firts look but I would like to develope some appeal

The thing is, you took the scale of Gaara's face but gave him... Not quite more realistic, but definitely stronger features. With the anime style nose, and the wide flat eyes, and the small mouth, his head reads naturally. With the features you sculpted, it looks like you're stuck between styles, and I'm not sure it's going to look very natural no matter what you'd do. With the details you have so far, I'd lean toward more realistic proportions. If you really wanna stick to the anime forms, though, I'd try and mimic the anime style features a lot closer.
The paintover concept looks pretty good if you ask me, but yeah if you know where are you heading, I think it's pretty good right now. I still agree with SupRore regarding the style since it definitely looks more like a little grown up. Still best of luck to you.

In the ref you posted : the illustration isn't a straight on view of his head it's a 3/4 perspective (roughly) and you're measuring for the skulls apex at the top of his hair mass. I think if that drawing had no hair you'd see a shorter skull length. This assumption is based on "how to" manga/anime drawing books I've looked at where they have nude orthos showing proportion. If I can find some images I'll post them for you to check out.
That said I really like the paintover and frankly I think you could push the brow expression and still maintain appeal and maybe work the eye shape a little more toward the illustration. For example you're currently missing the temple ridge (sorry I don't know the correct anatomic term) on the upper/outer aspect of the eye (the part where there's a peak in most illustrations and in life too, almost everyone has it).

Hey Yung and Robioto thanks for the advices. I scaled down a bit the head, you could see in the next update. Also I'll try to make some tweaks on the head to experiment a bit more with different expressions and details.
Robioto if you could find those reference would be great.

the paintover looks much improved. I think the model has some overly defined detail in the face making him look very aged. I see that your straying from the anime style and that is totally cool but i suggest making the eyes a little more dramatic as it seems like a key feature of the character. Look at some anime eyes and some real eyes and look for a good balance that still brings style and emotion. Might suggest rounding and raising the brow a bit aswell. Just my opinion :) Keep up the GW

There's a body proportion and scale reference in some anime/comic drawing book I have but I haven't found it yet, I've come across others but not the particular one I'm looking for. At any rate I don't think you're off so much on your body proportion anyway, it was just mainly the shape of the head and it's scale relationship to the body. One thing to remember is that as kids/teens grow older their legs grow at about (on average) twice the rate (in length) as the torso. So if you're going for a 12-15 year old the leg length as compared to the torso length will be different than that of an 18-20 year old.
I'm sorry if I'm being totally redundant, you may have already thought of all this stuff in which case please disregard.
