tef has entered the competition!
This is my first ever contest ever! It's a little scary but very exciting and hopefully I will not make a fool out of myself.
I have a small concept art drawing but I haven't been able to scan it yet. Allthough I have started with the modeling and here is my progress so far.

hey dude, same here....... i guess this is my first competition too.
i think you gotta work on the anatomy and proportions.....
by the way, did he take his cloak off ??
-good luck !!-

wew...hai dude glad to see u here weheehhehe.......i'm new one too..
hmmm..i think u don't need the knowledge of anatomy here..but u must know about proportion...i think ur jiraya feet is so tiny too...ehhehe..but ur fast huh...
i'll keep watching u....cheers
by the way, did he take his cloak off ??
-good luck !!-
Ahh.. no, I just haven't paid any attention to his torso yet so his cloak is about to be made later today. Together with more details on his "green robe" or whatever it can be called :-)
but u must know about proportion...i think ur jiraya feet is so tiny too...ehhehe..but ur fast huh...
i'll keep watching u....cheers
Yes, thanks. I will pay attention to his feet size later tonite :) and hopefully I will be finished with the modeling so I can go on unwrapping. That can a be painfully slow task if you want efficient UV-layout and textures.

hey man cool model! u might want to make sure the arms arent too long too. what is ur poly count right now? looks like he could do with a few loops in the mid section of his body. anyhoot, great progress and i look foward to the completion!
Typhus22:
Thanks man.. It have 1000 tris to play with and I will put alot of those on his upper body. I just got home from work, a bit late so I won't be able to finish everything I wanted today.
But anyhow, here is an early concept image I painted.
It isn't anything written in stone here since I painted it before taking a closer look at the references. The green shirt is a bit different from the original and he doesn't have any wrist nor ankle guards since I turned those into clothes.
I got my insurance now.. but are reconsidering another version where he has less or no clothes on his upper body. He is a casanova after all! :-)
Here is a reference I found that depict what I am aiming for if I do a makeover: http://tn3-2.deviantart.com/300W/images3.deviantart.com/i/2004/124/6/9/Jiraiya__Wisdom.jpg
I attached a good reference for the original Jiraiya together with 3/4 view in front and from behind.
Ok. I just realised I might be the only one doing this without a high poly version. Maybe I should learn that...
Oh, well... here is another base mesh version together with his slightly less pervert original :-)
Edit: Don't mind the toes, they are not finished.

ha nice start man! i like the one on teh left personally. as for doing high poly first its up to u. and yes there are people still just working with low poly so in that u are not alone though learning 3d sculpting program is not a bad thing either. ^_^

i think the gaps between the shoulders are too wide....
also the arms are too long....
try bending the neck too (he look so tense)
-nice progress though....
i think the gaps between the shoulders are too wide....

-nice progress though....
Thanks man.. his shoulders are in fact to wide and his neck isn't really thought through.. it's more of a pedistal for the head at the moment. I still have about 600 tris to go on the left version.
I tried some materials and bumpmap for the middle body today. Since he is a hermit and rather old he won't have any spectacular materials, but hopefully he will look fair and trustworthy, as he is.
I will continue texturing tomorrow!
ps. I just saw the fingers has been messed up.
Edit: uploaded the wrong picture.
Ok. Here is what I got so far.. I have been working a bit on the robe and the grey shirt pattern, I also tried a toon shader for a more soft approach. I am going to try and make more wavy clothing aswell.
Obvious is that everything I haven't started with is black clay.
I also remodeled the back of the hair to improve the siloutte from behind.
Ait, here I go again.. I have taxtured his clothes now and just need to start working on his skin and facials. However, I need to remodel the hair because it is a huge mess and I can save up some polys and texture space with more effective modeling.

wow that is mayor improvement! when i saw your first shot i thought .. hmmmm, and when i look at your last i think wow! very cool! textures rock so far. i'd add some shading/wrinkles to the red thingie though, but i'm sure you where still working on that.
keep it up! if you keep improving at the same rate you currently are, you will be a proffessional when you finish :P
3dsquid
09-25-2007, 08:37 PM
nice progress :) maybe you can save some poly by deleting his inner cloth that is hidden by his coat..
typhus22:
Thanks mate, I hope the proportions are allright. I have been working quite alot on the hair nowadays and tried different technuiques for it. I think I will go with transparancy hair afterall.
Japhir:
That's because this is my third low-poly character ever, so I am not doing everything as speedy and awesome as others. And I am hoping for some critique even though I haven't posted any cool concept art and stuff like that.
3dsquid:
I was thinking about doing that but I might keep it since I have enough polys for everything anyway. Maybe I should model one of the frogs instead of having polys underneath the cape :)
Here are todays renders from my experiment with the low poly hair. Btw, the hands and feet are still there, but they are pitch black and doesn't show up on the render. I will do those this week probably.
Ok. The previous hair wasn't good so I checked some tutorials today to improve my hair skills. So here is an update and I hope it's an improvement and worthy of critique.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I know about the white triangle artifacts on image 1 & 2.
Japhir
09-27-2007, 03:28 PM
looks much better! i'd just redo it/tweak it untill it looks totally awesome.
don't forget to check this if you haven't already: http://www.paultosca.com/varga_hair.html
i think the geometry you have is ok, but the hair alpha's aren't that great yet.
Chasarsis
09-27-2007, 05:21 PM
I think where you're falling flat is that, you haven't picked either an anime or realistic approach for the hair. ATM you have anime hair spikes mixed with realistic-type alpha planes.
If you pick anime then you can save the geometry and simplify the coloring you have. If you pick realistic, you can keep the alpha planes, but you're going to have to make more of a hair mass than what you have now.
Chasarsis:
So I am not supposed to use alpha planes for anime hair? I am not sure how that will look, but I could simplify the alpha channel though, and make it less varying. And I can't add more geometry for more volume since I am running out of polys. Maybe I haven't used my polys effective enough.
Edit: Isn't is possible to have spikes in realistic renders?
Japhir:
Thanks, I have been looking at that tutorial but I I haven't got close to Vargas results yet. Don't know how much texture space I actually need for it to actually look good.
Chasarsis
09-27-2007, 10:59 PM
Could you post your wires?
I think this might be what you're going for?
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h86/JC206/Kingdom%20Hearts/Sora3.jpg
Here the fading is more muted, and the alpha helps sell the illusion that the clumps are made up of hair, instead of the clumps themselves fading out (because when is clumped together, it get's more opaque, not less.)
You might also consider having your hair spring out from a mass, instead of having it comprised entirely of clumps as its coming down the back. It saves polygons and helps give the hair form.
Ahh.. I got you now! :) That is really cool hair. I guess that kind of hair isn't modeled with planes, or is it? Here are some wires anyway, give them your worst critique! :)
TryForce
09-28-2007, 07:45 AM
you builded the mesh actually quite good, you should try to work on your presentation. I thought this model would be pure bad polyflow and only a mess.
Uhm i think you should rework your hair texture then, You can get the same result in the pic above with your skills. just work some more on it and dont be lazy, it needs fine work.
really want to see you finish it!
TryForce:
Hehe.. I am not lazy, I just have my work as a web developer and studies to tend to. If it wasn't for that I would work on him 24/7 :)
Well.. I am not sure if this is an improvement, because now it looks like feathers or insects wings more than hair. Anyway, here is a tryout for a different style of hair.
Btw, should I still use planes if I want to model anime hair or should I model the hair together with the rest of the model?
typhus22
09-28-2007, 01:15 PM
the model is very nice man! u might want to texture in the highlights with more contrast if u want it to pop. still though, its looking pretty good ^_^
BTW whats ur polycount at?
I am practically out of polys, 4968 tris, but since the modeling is finished I don't need worry about those really. However, I might be able to free some of the polys when I will try and shape his hair better, just in case I would need some later on.
Ok. Ofcourse I was going to flatten my .psd file and exit photoshop without having a backup at all. Yes, that is really stupid of me and I have learned my lesson. :brick:
To punish myself I decided to restart texturing and try to make it better than last time. I didn't reach very far today but atleast I got the general diffuse into place for most parts. I have also changed the hair but failed to make it good enough so I will keep working on that.
Anyway.. here is the progress of my restart.
dudidam
10-01-2007, 10:02 PM
second try is better indeed..... :thumb:
as for the hair, i think u should work out for the hair flow first. make it flow direct to the edge of the hair mesh. then u could work with the opacity for make it better...
good luck man.. since i'm lack with my texture skill,i can afford to restart my texture if i'm gonna finish mine on time.... :D
Wohoo!
Finally I got a day off work and school to continue on my entry here. I still haven't figured out a good way to do the hair yet but I am working on it. Meanwhile I have started the facials and this is how far I have come. As you can see I need to work on the neck, upper chest area and on the head protector. It will be better when I make the specular map though.
ps. I know his eyes are looking at different things... I just made a quick paint.
YdoUwant2know
10-09-2007, 12:26 AM
Looking good.
Yeah his eyes do look rather funny, but otherwise, the textures look sound. With the hair, You might try overlapping your poly's more so that it looks like there is more thickness to it.
Heres the facial/ eye fix... I really need to speed this up..

nice i think its need now a better mounth textur
typhus22
10-10-2007, 12:55 PM
solid work mate! add some hair planes to thicken it out a bit and we are good! hey have u thought of making a bigger planes with the shiloutte alpha out to bulk out the shape of the hair?
Todays update... I think the hair is Ok for now so I will start working on the feet and hands now. They haven't got that much attention to be honest. I have used 4843 tris so far.
Todo list:
Feet, hands, (hair), spec map, rigg, final pose with a tree stub and rasengan in his hands.
YdoUwant2know
10-12-2007, 12:04 AM
Nice improvement with the hair.
The mouth though is looking kind of funny. Almost like he was hit in the lip. Maybe try giving the lips just a bit more color? Also, not sure if it is lighting or texture, but it looks like he has some dark splotches on his face.
Otherwise, looking good, keep it up
TryForce
10-12-2007, 12:39 AM
a suggestion for the rasengan: on sphere, inside a smaller on, both transparents and with a addtional rendered texture ;)
yeh ,hair looks great now! go go go
YoUWantToKnow:
Thanks, the mouth and face needs a cleanup. However I wasn't happy at all with my current workflow and technuiqes for normalmapping so I have been looking for ways to use Zbrush and Blender together. However I finally gave up and now I have a nice workflow between blender sculpt and XNormal to create tangent space normal maps.
Basicly, the mouth and everything will be fixed when I have my new workflow in place.
TryForce:
Thank you, that would be cool and since I have a few polys left it might even be possible to make spheres. :-) I am going away for a while but hopefully I will make it during the end of this weekend.

I know you might not have the time, but it would be awesome if his stand was just the top of the frog's head. Just an idea. The new hair looks sooo much better then the last attempts. The models and texture do the job pretty well and with a good pose and render setup he will look pretty cool. Looking forward to it.
Give him a great pose now :D
Heyo all.
Finally I got his clothes the way I wanted after doing some tutorials on normal mapping. It actually look like clothes now and not a clay mass.
The face is also updated and I have minimised the bruised lip that was a result from bad normal maps.
The only part that I am not entierly ok with is his feet, they look terrible tbh and therefore it will be my next update.
Yes. The pose might not be the most action based pose you have seen but I you rarely see Jiraiya in action and when he is it allmost never result in close combat fightning as he often rely on his scroll, intellect and enchantments. The pose I am aiming for is an experienced traveler pose. The tree stub is not finished either, but you can atleast get the picture for the podium.
I might actually do a full enviroment scene later on for this guy since I worked so hard on him and learned so much new stuff about low poly modeling.
Edit: I might change the grass and tree stub into Gamabunta's head. Depends if I manage to do a good one.

100% improvement with the mouth. You are right, the feet could use some work, but if you improve them as much as you did everything else, then they should be fine.
TryForce
10-14-2007, 03:00 AM
yeh it keeps getting better heh, though did you rig this model or just posed via moving points?
because if you rigged, then use the rig and do some greater pose for now you can't tell when he wants to do.
wanna see you finishing it ;D good work

wow hooo....nice pose...hmm i think u must add little bit more..details in cloth texture...it's kinda flat...in my opinion...but i like the overall...just tweek the texture owkey...there ar 1 week to go... niceeee....cheers.....
YdoUwant2know:
Thanks. I will do my best with the feet tonite.
TryForce:
It is rigged but I haven't thought about any good poses yet. And there is the fact that Jiraiya allmost never use ninjutsu. But sure, maybe I can think of something more interesting while it will not be a fightning pose.
ALW-DaSilva:
Do you mean flat as the folds in the big robe or do you think the small details need to get some more bump?
Btw, I am experimenting with gamabunta a bit but I have nothing to show off yet.

whoo whoo whoo, hold on, you cant think of a pose ;D ???
look up at General Discussion on the second page the Refrence thread, go there and look up for Jairya pics. Take one of his posses then = easy!
Though i would usggest you the pose he does when he announces his name. I tohught about it because the last Manga reshowed it hehe.
this one:

good luck :D
TryForce:
Hehe... that one is funny :) But I don't think it will fit his smile-less face though.. perhaps I should model his smile since he is a funny character.
But then again I wanted him to be intelligent and wise, his adult persona. I played around with the idea of having our beloved sannin teaching Naruto about the rasengan skill. Maybe it is booring aswell. If that one doesn't break it I may consider doing something with more action.
Here's the teaching pose but the rasengan ain't finished as you can see.
Ok. I finished my promised update... toes and rasengan. I also finished his hair and add some volume to it. My last polies will be for the rope that keep the scroll in place. Nothing that will show much in the entry perhaps, but it would be wrong to leave it out.
I am working on Gamabuntas head aswell as an alternative pose.
BuroKun
10-15-2007, 01:18 AM
the face seems flat...or to far back....and the neck makes me feel weird.
BuroKun:
Wow.. you just sunk my ship all the way to the abyss. :-) I will try and see what I can do about the neck, I think I need to tamper with the lightning to get less a flat face.
BuroKun
10-15-2007, 02:08 PM
Wow.. you just sunk my ship all the way to the abyss.
sorry....but ya.....
BuroKun:
You are right, but I am not sure what to do about it. But don't be sorry :-) this is just something I do for fun and I was joking about my ero-sannin sinking to the bottomless pit. It's not like I was expecting to win the very first contest I participated in.
Here is a running pose with some more action to it. I haven't done much rigging before so be patient. Hopefully I will manage to refine this one into something that deserves to be called a final pose.
Arghh... I don't wan't to realise that action posing reveals every flaw possible in my pity construction. Everything looks so wierd.
Cheers!
Edit: His shoulders were very wrong.

10-15-2007, 07:05 PM
Hey, good work so far. I really think you should try a pose that TryForce suggested. But that's just my oppinion.
Sorry for bumping, but the previous picture was terrible. Todays hint, don't use IK-chains if you are not good at rigging to start with.
Thunder Bunny:
I experimented further on the running pose, I am not sure what pose he does when he announce his name though, I have looked through all the animes where he is with naruto but couldn't find it.
BuroKun:
Hopefully the neck anomalities are gone now and that his face is not flat anymore.
Edit: I missunderstood TryForce, I know what pose he meant now. But it brings alot of attention to his feet which is the part I am really really terrible with.
Hey all again. I took TryForce's suggestion and did my own version so that I could keep the rasengan. There are some minor tuning that I need to do but I think everything looks ok now. I am ready to go on with Gamabuntas head and the overall podium. I will probably change his wrist guards too. They look a bit wierd now when I think about it.

10-16-2007, 11:15 PM
good and tough pose!
but i can't sense the jiraiya character here. he always funny, hilarious, passionate, and full of spirit.... :D
anyway, since your character is far done then mine, you got much time to explore it!!! :thumb:
3dsquid:
Thanks. I will try that.
Dudidam:
Thank you. My initial idea was to create a less humoristic Jiraiya, but since I have modeled him like the original I might shape a smile for the beauty pose. I only need four tris to make the teeth and my mouth is allready open and ready fpr shaping.
TryForce
10-17-2007, 02:58 AM
hmmm Well I can sense some Jiraiya here. Mostly when he is fighting he is more inhimself. I like that pose. Though maybe work some more on Dynamic Pose. Like streched legs . wide arms and and and.
THis is a great improvment!
Ok. Since I have never been in a contest before I don't understand whats a small amount of photoshop and whats a big amount. For the winning pose, is something like this acceptable or should I drop the sky background? I noticed the 200k file size limit :-/
I don't have time to model a better "top" of Gamabuntas head than this. It would take to long and I have loads of exams approaching.
I am still doing some tweaks here and there.. so I will do another update before it's final.
http://82.182.188.70/filer/winning_red.jpg
Here is a simplified version.

i think its quite decent and good. Me likes! gj!
TryForce: Thank you man. I have adjusted the old pose a bit to make him slouch the head a bit. Credits to Typhus22 for that.
But then I began thinking that it would be cool to use a more detailed toad anyway. I will probably use the toad image for the beauty shot and have two other Jiraiyas standing on either side of the sitting one. I need to tweak some gravity into the hair and ofcourse finish the toad. But that will be for tomorrow.

Lol, the frog makes for a great pedestal:p I have seen several poses from you, and each one is getting better and better. Looks like you are having fun with him heheh niice. If you have time, just for fun, you should try and find an exact pose somewhere that you can copy exactly. This might look better because all balance issues and camera angles would be locked in already with your reference. Besides this, things are looking good man. Keep up the good work... only 4 days left:)
FredH:
So what you are saying is that I should, for example; do one more pose, copy that around and rotating it so that I can see the same pose from 2-3 different camera angles? Would it work to have two Jiraiyas on either side of the toad, same pose but oposite 3/4's view?
FredH
10-18-2007, 10:15 PM
nope, just find a single ref shot and use this pose and camera angle for your winning pose shot. So only a single figure is needed. No rotation or anything. You can keep all the renders you have already for your beauty renders sheet.
However, it's up to you. Which shot were you thinking of using for your winning pose shot? The one where he is on the a mountain with a patterned sky?
FredH:
Thank you for your answer. My idea was to use the mountain thing as the winning pose and then use the toad scenario with two more Jiraiyas in it for the beauty sheet.
Looking good tef! You really improved alot from your last model. Congrats!

Wow you’ve clearly made a jump in this comp tef, the model looks worlds better from when I last saw it which admittedly was a while ago:inocent:. The poses you worked up are pretty awesome, especially the one with him sitting down, hehe that’s so Jiraiya:D! Nice going.
Marcus Dublin:
Thank you! You can't imagine how much this forum and contest has influenced me. In other forums that I actively post, low poly isn't popular at all and most people doesn't understand how difficult it is. Another reason for my progress is that this is my third low poly model ever.

Personally I would say looks the Rasengan and just spread out his fingers instead, but thats just me. I love how it turned out, came soooo far since you started it. I agree with Tryforce though about changing the skin color of the frog, it would just fit more and be more recognizable as a frog and not camo colored rock or something.
I submitted it now... but I didn't had time to make those last minute changes, sorry. I am not really satisfied but what the heck... there will be more competitions and I need to learn that high poly / low poly workflow too.
Thanks for everything and see you later on these forums. I can allready see my next low poly character in front of me.

Tef, if you already submitted your finals, you had better send me a revised thumbnail to my email address along with your changed winning pose too. Because right now, you still have the thumbnail from what.. the first week of this comp showing?;)
Lol.. thanks. Didn't think about that at all.
ps. I choosed the standing pose after all since it is much more dynamic and show off the hair alot more.
Woh tef u really pushed ur entry to a new level, good job man :thumb:

10-21-2007, 10:27 PM
so wheres the updated orange frog? looking sweet man! and to be honest jiraya is probably one of the hardest characters to do under the poly count since his hair is such a big part of him so in other words great job brother! im guessing u will compete in the next comp no? cya man!
Zann:
Thank you. I love a challenge and low poly modeling is, according to me, one of the greatest challenges in 3D.
Typhus22:
Haha.. I might continue with the frog seperatly and put on a real SSS shader and make it realistic. Didn't had the time for it though since I have an exam in Radio Communication tomorrow.
