Thanks guys!
Hito, never fear! Tully will post her full WIP concept over in her thread (http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/showthread.php?t=895) soon!
As for me, I'm planning on doing this in ZBrush for the most part, need some practise on that. Plus, I haven't done a full character since the last Dominance War so I generally need to get back in the swing of things :P
So, here's a ZSphere rough-out and the resulting adaptive skin mesh. Sexy, eh?
http://www.greveson.co.uk/tenten/wip01.jpg
A bit of quick tweaking on that for proportion blocking out...

I want to stand up and applaud just for getting the hands to look so dainty. Are you going to match her up with the proportions in Tully's concept?
wow thats some elite zsphere skills ! I cant get hands to work ever, so annoying!

Hi Mop and Tully,
Nice to see you both participating with the same character in this contest. However, I wonder if you are aware of the new rules for joint entries? They are different from what was allowed for the Dominance War II. Just my 2 cents of caution....
Snowfly
09-18-2007, 06:03 PM
EH? Me wonders which rules amethyst is referring to that mop and tully have broken.
Amethyst, are you referring to this line in the Concept Art entry requirements? "Joint entries for concept art challenge are prohibited."
I think that just means that only one person can submit an entry for the Concept Art challenge, no teams doing concepts alone.
Note that the 3D challenge entry allows teams providing that the concept artist only does the concept and no models/textures etc. This is what we are doing. I believe it's set up this way so that a 2-person team can enter their concept and 3D model in each category.
In this case, my model will be the 3D category, and Tully's concept will be in the Concepts category.
FredH seems to say the same thing here: http://www.gameartisans.org/forums/showpost.php?p=7787&postcount=56 - the concept from the 3D contest can be entered separately into the Concept contest as well.
FredH, if I'm interpreting this incorrectly, please let me know, but it seems to make sense this way.
Regardless of that, update:
Quick roughing to try and match the concept better, proportions are still fairly out of whack, as are the facial features. Waist is weird and arms are too skinny:
http://www.greveson.co.uk/tenten/wip03.jpg
Different angle with closer-ups of hands, which I'm fairly happy with at the moment.
http://www.greveson.co.uk/tenten/wip04.jpg
More to come tomorrow! I'll finalize proportions then start extracting meshes for her clothes.
FredH
09-19-2007, 12:04 AM
ah, I can see why the rules were confusing. For concept art, teams are prohibited, but for 3d art, teams of two are allowed. To clear this up, yup, you guys are fine:) As long as two concept artists don't work on the same entry for the concept art section, then everything is good. For the 3d category, as long as a concept artist only does the concept art and nothing else, this is fine. Later, or in this case now, the concept artist (tully) can also use the same concept for the concept art category. Hope this made sense:)
Glad to see the M&T team in on this one. Both entries are already shaping up really nicely. This is going to be a real hot entry!

sheesh! Better keep track of this thread. This stuff is looking really good!
I'm surprised you chose starting your mesh using z-sphere. In my brief testing with them, they seem so unwieldy.
Well, your results speak for themselves so far. Keep it up!!

I am not sure about the proportions. the chest looks a bit too small and the breasts a little bit too high.
Woop never thought MoP and Tully would be joining this one. Will definitely be keeping an eye on this.
Yep, proportions were definitely weird. Fixed them up a bit now to better match the orthos in Tully's concept thread:
http://www.greveson.co.uk/tenten/wip06.jpg
Also did a highpoly sculpt for her weapon-summoning scrolls, she'll have a few of these dangling around so I figured it'd be good to make it detailed, also it was fun, I love ZBrush's radial symmetry tools :)

Those scrolls looks great!
Ah! Those are bloody good! Please do share your techniques from time to time. Us newbies could use some tips :D. Anyway, those are very good !
Thanks guys!
Yung: The detailing on the scroll was all created much faster than you might think, using ZBrush's "radial symmetry" options - basically I can just set it to do 16 or 32 (or more!) radial symmetry strokes for every 1 stroke I make, so the detail adds up really quickly.
Threw a quick low-poly model and normal maps together for the scroll, also a base of flat colour and ambient occlusion for now.

Pass on textures for the scrolls (she's gonna have 5 of these as per the concept).
Textures are shown at true res, they're in the top corner of the allotted 1024x1024 map. Clockwise from top right: diffuse, specular, local.

Totally dig it, MoP!
I think the arms could use more love before you go too far, though. The arms overall look a bit long - especially the upperarm->forearm ratio.
Hmm, I think the overall length is ok (her hands hang midway down her thighs when relaxed, which is natural) but you're probably right about the ratio between upper and forearm. I always tend to make forearms longer, no idea why!
Either way, the arms are definitely the part I've worked on the least (heh now that I think about it I've only vaguely pushed them around for 5 minutes) compared with the rest, so they'll definitely be getting some more work before I go all normal-mappy on this.
Thanks! :)

Slow progress...

Still in ZBrush at this stage, just gotta finish up the face/hair and do a bit more work on the arms, then I can do the lowpoly and render normals. Textures shouldn't take too long, a lot of it should just be flat colour with a bit of detail/overlays anyway.

I was actually looking forward to an update and.. You didn't disapoint:) Nice stuff as always mop. At the moment, her face seems a little too angular for an asian girl, but maybe the textures will fix this. If not, maybe if you just puffed up the cheeks some more, this will fix it. Maybe, maybe not:) Looking forward to the next update!

I didnt liked the rendering befor, but now i do. Its looking sexy where it is man. I really hope for awesome texturing now :D :D :D
What can I say other than that I really need to learn the high-poly / low-poly workflow. The details are very clean and everything flows like a charm.
Woah very nice and clean transition. Though the leg seems to suffer a little. Still, I am looking forward to your textures.
Oh heh, I just realised that there's been an extension until the 22nd.
So basically I had my highpoly done last week, and did the lowpoly/UV-maps in the past couple of days thinking I'd have to work through the weekend to finish!
So now I've modelled her knives in highpoly, baked normals, started texturing, nearly finished rigging too... still some kinks to iron out, which I'll do tomorrow.
If I finish the rig tomorrow, that'll give me a week to mess around with nice poses and camera angles, and also finish up the textures, which shouldn't take too long but now I can probably put some extra polish in!
Will post more screengrabs tomorrow, since I want to play some ETQW and Portal for a bit now :)

I would personally like to see you break up the pink abit with maybe some red/browns in the leg pack and maybe some brown on the scrolls instead of the pink would be nice? Right now i'm seeing alot of PINK baby.

This is looking great, the normals came out really nice!
Cheers tacit math, HntrLuc.
Wow amazing job. Just a question, why model the hipoly them the lowpoly? Is there a reason for it or is it just a diffrent way to do it?
Defeat: Well, I do it this way so that I don't really have any limitations when modelling the character, and I find that it's much quicker to create a lowpoly model afterwards since you can use low subdivisions of your highpoly mesh to get a start, knowing that all the proportions are correct and match up.
Also I think that personally I get better results from this method, as opposed to making the final lowpoly model first then having to work within that for the highpoly before I bake normals.
Both methods have pros and cons, I partly did this because I wanted to experiment with ZBrush3 too.
I would personally like to see you break up the pink abit with maybe some red/browns in the leg pack and maybe some brown on the scrolls instead of the pink would be nice? Right now i'm seeing alot of PINK baby.
ThatDon: Hehe, I love the pink. It's all very WIP at the moment though, the packs and purses are just a flat colour fill with an AO bake thrown on top, so they're dead easy to change. I'll mess around with some stuff while I work more on it but for now I quite like the overall scheme, although there will be more variance in trim colours later, and a bit more texture here and there which will probably break it up some more.
Cheers!

Hey MoP, I like what you're doing here. I had a question though.
I still got a lot to learn about modeling, so this may seem like an amateur question... I was just wondering how you go about modeling a Low Poly Model from a High Poly Mesh. I can see how lo to hi works; adding more subdivisions and detail--but how do you subtract detail and polys to create a low poly mesh? I kind of like the idea of going all out on something, and then simplifying it after. Also, did you import your high poly to another App to do the low poly?
K, as some general cc, I really like the model. I have wanted to try out making a model from Zspheres but I just cant find the time right now... But i especially like how you got her hands to look so feminine even from the rough blocking. I agree with FredH that her face looks too angular for an asian girl, but to your credit, Tully's concept definately depicts Tenten as having an Anglo background, so I think you're still doing what you're suppose to do. Textures seem to leave something to be desired, but i know youre not done with that yet... I know you like the pink and thats cool:) but i might suggest applying some varying tones of a more desaturated pink just to break up the colors a bit.
wanderingmonk: it's easy enough to take any control meshes you have made for subdivided high-res models, and just remove edge loops or collapse verts to get the main forms of the low-poly mesh, then work from there.
OK, bit of an update, it's still not quite done (I'm not very happy with several aspects of the texture but I don't know if I'll have time to sort it all out in time).
Here's a 4mb turnaround MOV of where the model/rig/texture stands at the moment. Some tweaks to the rig needed and the lighting/pose is not final, but I reckon it's looking alright. Click here or on the image for the MOV! (http://www.greveson.co.uk/tenten/tenten_01.mov)

FredH
10-21-2007, 07:06 PM
I really agree with the above two. Everything except the face and toes look awesome! For the face, and toes, I think these areas need to be softened a little. Their colors are too strong and their shading colors are too dark. This darkness kind of gives her a scary goth feeling. Really exceptional work otherwise. You really outdid youself with this one:thumb:
Love the entry :)
Perhaps the lighting color not to be that extreme/colorful?

Really awesome work dude. It almost looks painterly :D
I agree with the face comments though. Its really killing it
Woah everything what they said and I think the face's a little too sharp. Her cheekbone especially with the lighting and textured combined. But great work man.
wow, excellent match to Tully's art!
I'll agree with the toe comments but I don't really see any issues with the face except that the makeup might not fit the character.
One issue that no one else mentioned, maybe because it's not visible in the screenshot, is the big dark rings under her armpits!! is this a stretched UV issue? the color wouldn't be out of place right in the small shadows.
Well, I'm calling this done... still a lot of stuff I'd change but this will have to do.

Hi there this model is so breathtaking i adore it and cant stop watching that 360 spin. I was wondering what the inverted colours where on the textures u showed and what slot in max they go in. Is that how you get so many colours shinning all over her ?
Hey Neffy, its Mops specular colour map. Wherever the light is hitting the character the specular colour map will become more visible. They go in the "specular colour" slot in max :P. Then just play with the specular settings till it looks good. There are reasons that the colours appear inverted, though they arent necessarily just inverted, these colours are chosen/painted by the artist to bring out the correct colour in the highlights.

Very nice. I'd say that everything is money... except for the face :(. I think she'll need a little more work to nail tully's concept. I'm seeing that the eyes are too big and the chin is a bit to small. Perhaps her face, from forhead to chin is a bit too squished. It'd also be cool to see the hair fall to a point like shown in the concept. Good work though.
