Brand new, need help.

I am brand new to digital art, I have barely begun learning digital painting. I would like to improve but do not know where to go. I would also like to get into 3D modeling but the only program I have any real experience with is SketchUp.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Well there's a thread just like this on the boards right now in the technical talk section. It's more focused on which software would be good to pick up but I think it will help you out. Once you decide on a software you can start looking at the hundreds of tutorials online to help you get started.
