I've had this problem a couple of times now and originally put it down to the tri count in the scenes. Basically what happens is that I will switch to High Quality mode and Maya will flood the RAM and then crash, turning my system into sludge in the process. I have a program that monitors how much RAM is available and when I turn HQ mode on it drops to single digits of available RAM. I can bring up the task manager and it tells me that Maya isn't actually using anymore memory than it usually does. As I said I thought this was a just a polygon count issue but today I am getting the same issue in 1 of 2 scenes I am using. One has easily 5 times the amount of tris and I can enable HQ with no problems but the other just causes the above to occur. Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I missing something obvious? It's Maya 2008 if that makes any difference.
